Hello, fp lovers and ink writing! This is my third tool of this model, but if the first two had an ultra-thin nib, this one is the complete opposite. It is equipped with, so could say, an ultra-thick nib 🙂 and it is definitely worth a look:

Вітаю вас, любителі чорнильного письма! Це вже мій третій інструмент цієї моделі, але якщо перші два мали ультратонке перо, то цей — повна протилежність. Він оснащений, можна сказати, ультра-товстим пером 🙂 і на нього, безумовно, варто подивитися:

Platinum #3776 Century with Music nib (made in Japan) PNB-10000 #1-9

Інструмент має сигароподібну форму із закругленими кінцями. Виготовлений із чорної смоли, ймовірно такої ж (або подібної), яку використовують Sailor або Montblanc, оскільки при яскравому світлі вона має такий самий темно-червоний відтінок. Система заправки — картриджно-конвертерна, власного формату Platinum. Ковпачок оснащений фірмовою системою Slip’n’Seal із внутрішнім ковпачком, що запобігає висиханню чорнила під час тривалого зберігання, і це дійсно працює. Перевірено особисто: якось у мене попередня модель 3776 пролежала більше ніж пів року із сейлорівськими нано-чорнилами і почала нормально писати буквально після 4-5 штрихів. Ковпачок на різьбі, із двозахідною різьбою, і повністю закривається за 1,5 оберта.

The tool has a cigar-shape form with rounded ends. Made of black resin, probably the same (or similar) used by Sailor and Montblanc, as it has the same dark red shade in bright backlight. The filling system is cartridge-converter, by own Platinum format. The cap features the branded Slip’n’Seal system with an inner cap to prevent ink drying out during long-term storage, and it really works. Tested personally: once I had the previous model 3776 lying for more than half a year with Sailor nano-inks and started to write normally after literally 4-5 strokes. The cap on thread, with two-starts thread, and open/close by 1.5 turns.

На ковпачку присутнє широке позолочене кільце, на яке нанесено звичний текст: фірмовий логотип компанії — P, Platinum, made in Japan “#3776”. В іншому все майже ідентично раніше представленим моделям, про які можна прочитати за посиланнями: Platinum #3776 Century Bourgogne та Platinum #3776 Century Chartres Blue.

On the cap there is a wide golden ring, on which is written the usual text: the company logo – P, Platinum, made in Japan “#3776”. Otherwise, everything is almost identical to the previously reviewed models, which you can read by the links: Platinum #3776 Century Bourgogne and Platinum #3776 Century Chartres Blue.

Єдина конструктивно суттєва відмінність від стандартної моделі — це фідер: у цьому варіанті він, хоч і виготовлений із пластику, аде має дещо іншу конструкцію, як у прихованій частині, так і в видимій. Ба більше, цей варіант має два чорнильних канали замість одного, як у стандартних моделях.

The only structurally significant difference from the standard model is the feed: in this version, although it is made of plastic, it has a slightly different design, both in the hidden and visible parts. What’s more, this feed has two ink channels instead of one, as in standard model versions.

Перо: доволі велике, золоте, 14-каратне, класично жорстке, як для Platinum, майже як “цвях”, але завдяки широкому наконечнику перо дуже гладко ковзає, що іноді створює ілюзію м’якості. На перо, по периметру, нанесено лінійний візерунок та текст: #3776, логотип компанії P, 14K.MUSIC, 585 і 20 у хвостовій частині. На правій боковій грані є відбиток країни виробництва — Japan. Число “20”, ймовірно, означає тип (форму) пера, яке характерне для пер Platinum #3776 Century третього покоління, тоді як сучасні стандартні пера з двома “хвостиками” і вирізом посередині належать до четвертого покоління і мають код “26”.

The nib: Quite large, 14K solid gold, classically hard as for Platinum, almost like a “nail”, but thanks to the wide tip, the nib glides very smoothly, which sometimes gives the illusion of softness. The nib has a linear outline pattern and text: #3776, P (company logo), 14K.MUSIC, 585 and 20 at the tail. On the right side there is an imprint of the country of manufacture — Japan. The number “20” probably refers to the type (shape) of the nib, which likes to third generation Platinum #3776 Century nibs, while the modern standard nibs with two “tails” and cutout between to the fourth generation and have the code “26”.

Оригінальна #3776 була розроблена Харумо Умедою (Haruo Umeda), відомим як «Mr.Fountain Pen», разом із командою дизайнерів у Platinum Pen Company. Перші варіанти моделі #3776 мали досить незвичайний дизайн, схожий на гумову піпетку «акордеон», також називану Gathered (ribbed) — ребристі, і випускалися в двох кольорах: чорному та червоному.

Minutes of history:
The original #3776 was designed by Haruo Umeda, aka “Mr.Fountain Pen”, along with the design team at Platinum Pen Company. Their goal was extremely simple: to create the perfect fountain pen. And so in 1978 (the 53rd year of Showa’s reign according to the previously used Japanese calendar) the Japanese Mont Blanc was born :). Why Montblanc? Because 3776 is the height of the highest peak in Japan – Mt.Fujiyama or Fuji, as by analogy to 4810. The first variants of model #3776 had a rather unusual design, similar to a rubber “accordion” filler, also called Gathered (ribbed) – ribbed, and were produced in two colors: black and red.

За короткий час, а саме за перший рік випуску, вони зазнали кількох модифікацій і змінили одразу 3 покоління. Зміни стосувалися матеріалу фідера та форми пера. Фідер першого і другого поколінь був ебонітовим і відрізнявся кількістю ребер, у першої версії видима частина була повністю гладкою. Перо перших двох поколінь було ідентичним, відкритим і мало класичну, сферичну форму. Перо третього покоління виглядало як перо Music, представлене в темі, вже трохи приплюснуте з “широкими крилами”, а фідер було замінено на пластиковий. Наступне, 4-те покоління, отримало сучасну форму пера видимої частини, як у Platinum #3776 Century з пером UEF, на які я давав посилання трохи вище, і сучасний пластиковий списовидний фідер.

In a short time, namely during the first year of production, they underwent several modifications and through 3 generations at once. Changes related to the material of the feed and shape of the pen. The feed of the first and second generations was ebonite and differed in the number of ribs(lamels), in the first version the visible part was completely smooth. The nib of the first two generations was identical, open and had a classic, spherical shape. The nib of the third generation looked like the Music nib presented in this post, already a little flattened with “wide shoulders”, and the feed was changed on plastic one. The next(last) generation, the 4th generation, got a modern visible part nib shape like the Platinum #3776 Century UEF nib which I linked a little above, and modern plastic arrow like feeder.

До недавнього часу в модельному ряду #3776 було представлено 2 моделі: Century (PNB-10000) як старша з золотим 14К пером та Balance (PTB-5000) як молодша зі сталевим пером. Проте кілька років тому компанія вирішила прибрати з виробництва молодшу модель, одночасно почавши активно розширювати лінійку Century різноманітними кольоровими рішеннями, і до стандартних Black, Bourgogne і Chartres Blue додалися Chanonseau White, Laurel Green, Oshono і Black Diamond, а потім і Nice, Nice Lavender і Nice Lilas.

Until recently, the #3776 line present 2 models: Century (PNB-10000) as the higher one with 14K gold nib and Balance (PTB-5000) as the younger one with steel nib. However, a few years ago, the company decided to discontinue the younger model from production, at the same time began to actively expand the Century line with various color solutions, and to the standard Black, Bourgogne and Chartres Blue, Chanonseau White, Laurel Green, Oshono and Black Diamond were added, and then Nice, Nice Lavender and Nice Lilas.

Загальні розміри інструмента: довжина в складеному стані – 140мм, зі знятою кришкою – 120мм. Діаметр корпусу – 13.2мм, а в місці хвата – 10.3мм. Вага інструмента з установленим картриджем – 22.6гр, а при знятій кришці – 12гр.

Overall dimensions of the tool: full length – 140 mm, without cap – 120 mm. Body diameter – 13.2 mm, at the grip – 10,3 mm. Full weight is 22.6 g (include converter), and without cap – 12 g. 

Спочатку я планував придбати це перо з метою переробки його на Crisp Italic для отримання максимального контрасту, але перед модифікацією вирішив випробувати в варіанті “з коробки” з заводськими налаштуваннями, так би мовити :).

Firstly I planned to purchase this pen for grind it to Crisp Italic for maximum contrast, but before modifying I decided to try it “out from the box” with factory settings, so to speak :).

Що може бути логічнішим, ніж протестувати японський інструмент на японському ж сюжеті :)? Так, перо специфічне, але і йому можна знайти застосування :).

What could be more logical than testing a Japanese tool byJapanese theme :)? Yes, the pen is specific, but it can also be used in drawing :).

Варто, напевно, згадати, що японські розміри перій, хоч і позначаються аналогічно європейським — літерами: EF, F, M, B — тим не менше відрізняються від них за розміром (в меншу сторону). Так, японська M, як правило, відповідає європейській F. Що ж робити, коли є шанувальником японських інструментів, але потрібно перо великого розміру? Одним із виходів може стати перо, так зване Music. Так, це не B в повному сенсі цього слова, це скоріше за характером STUB європейської розміру BВ, але тим не менше воно дозволяє писати широко і розмашисто :), а зменшити, за бажанням, завжди можливо. Тож, ширина лінії прямою стороною при вертикальному веденні отримується 1.0мм, а при горизонтальному веденні – 0.4мм. Скольження достатньо гладке, натиск, в плані лінії, нічого не дає і дозволяє лише, як не дивно, збільшити ефект зворотного зв’язку. Зворотна сторона пише контрастніше, при цьому вертикальна лінія має розмір – 0.9мм, а горизонтальна – 0.2мм.

It is probably worth mentioning that the Japanese sizes of nibs, although they are indicated similarly to the Western/European onesby the letters: EF, F, M, B – nevertheless differ from them in size (to the smaller side). So, the Japanese M usually corresponds to the Western/European F. So, if you’re a fan of Japanese tools but need a wider line, one of the ways is purchase a nib called Music. Yes, it is not B in the full sense of the word, it is more like STUB of Westerm/European BВ, size, but nevertheless it allows you to write widely and sweepingly :), and it is always possible to reduce it if desired. So, the width of the line by the right side in vertical direction is 1.0mm, and horizontal direction is – 0.4mm. The sliding is quite smooth, the pressure, in terms of the line, does not give anything and allows only, strangely enough, to increase the effect of feedback. The reverse side is written in a more contrasting line, while the vertical line has a size of 0.9mm, and horizontal line has a size of 0.2mm.

В результаті: поки що моє перше враження дуже позитивне :). По-перше, чорний колір все ж виглядає набагато вигідніше в порівнянні з напівпрозорим синім або червоним, ніби то по-класичному. По-друге, як я писав вище, я давно хотів (прямо мріяв) отримати хоч одне з Music пер, одного з трьох японських грандiв з метою переробити його в італік, адже, як мені здається, це страшенно правильна думка:). Так от, на відміну від раніше протестованих UEF пер, в даному екземплярі дуже багато матеріалу на кінчику пера, з якого можна творити все що завгодно, і це несказанно радує :). Єдине, що я дійсно ніяк не можу зрозуміти – звідки з’явилася назва “Music”, адже по суті, для написання нот (музичних партитур) набагато логічніше користуватися пером Architect? 🙂 А інших асоціацій я просто не бачу.

At the end: so, my first impression is very positive :). First, the black color still looks much more advantageous compared to the translucent blue or red, as if in a classic way. Secondly, as I wrote above, for a long time I wanted (actually dreamed) to get at least one of the Music nibs, one of the three Japanese grands, with the aim to grinding it to Italic, because, as it seems to me, this is a terribly right idea :). So, unlike the previously tested UEF nibs, in this instance there is a lot of material at the tip of the nib, from which we can create anything, and this is incredibly gratifying :). The only thing that I really can’t understand is where the name “Music” came from, because in fact, it is much more logical to use the Architect nib for writing notes (musical scores)? 🙂 And I just do not see other associations with the word “Music”.

Platinum #3776 Century with Music nib (made in Japan) PNB-10000 #1-9

Нема сенсу знову описувати цей інструмент бо він на 100% ідентичний описаному вище.

There is no point in describing this tool again, because it is 100% identical to the one described above.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає – 0,4 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 1.0 мм при вертикальному ведені, при нормальній подачі. Натиск  на цьому пері не працює від слова “геть”. Зворотна сторона дає лінію 0,25 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 0.9 мм при вертикальному ведені.

The width of the line by right side has 0.4 mm in horizontal direction and 1.0 mm in vertical direction, with normal ink flow. Pressure on this nib does not work from the word “at all”. The reverse side writes by 0.25 mm in horizontal direction and 0.9 mm in vertical direction.

В підсумку 2: відновив свої відчуття стосовно цього пера і вони мені подобаються. І, до речи, я відчув ще один аспект стосовно назви пера “Мьюзік” – це перо музичне не за формою, а за вмістом, тобто звуком який воно відтворює при письмі, і мені це подобається! Мені навіть подобається яскраво виражений фідбек від цього пера. Тож, на цей час, це найкраще із широких пер що я пробував загалом.

At the end 2: Regained my feelings about this nib and I like them. And, by the way, I felt another aspect regarding to the name of this nib “Music” – this nib is musical not in form of tip, but in content, that is, the sound it makes when writing, and I like it! I even like the bright feedback from this nib. So, for now, this is the best wide nib I’ve tried overall.

Виробникам, доволі часто, дуже важко при масспродакшн вирівняти 2 кінчики пера, то що ж казати як що їх 3. Але попре таке становище перо добре працює.

Quite often, it is very difficult for manufacturers to align 2 tines of nib during mass production, so, what says if there are 3 of them. But despite this, this nib writes well.

На останок, вже традиційно місто ескізу і сьогодні це ескіз у японському стилі – “Дух воїна”.

Ще трохи додам про чорнило – Montblanc Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson. Чорнило мені не сподобалось – блякле та сухе, навіть на такому широкому пері не відчувається змащення кінчика. Насиченість лінії не прогнозована, інколи вона світла, інколи трохи темніше, але повторне проведення по тому ж місту не додає насиченості, а лише розмочує папір. Можливо для малювання старовинних карт зі скарбами воно гарно підійде, але собі я таке не бажаю)).

I will add a little more about the ink – Montblanc Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson. I didn’t like this ink – faded and dry, even on such a wide/wet nib, I don’t feel the lubrication of the tip. The saturation of the line is not predictable, sometimes it is light, sometimes it is a little darker, but repeated drawing over the same line(place) does not add saturation, just only wets the paper. Maybe it will be good for drawing like ancient maps with treasures, but I don’t want that for myself)).

 Не зважаючи на те що запиту від власника на будь-які роботи з цією ручкою не було, совість мені не дозволила віддати перо у тому стані в якому я його сфотографував для огляду. Тобто ручку я отримав вже  заправленою і спочатку протестував, а потім вже промив для фотосесії і помітив невирівняні кінчики коли готував пост.

Despite the fact that there was no request from the owner for any work with this pen/nib, my conscience did not allow me to give this nib in the condition in which I photographed it for review. That is, I received this pen already filled and first tested it, and then I cleaned it for the photo session and noticed the unaligned tines when I was preparing the post.
