Parker “75” Cisele Sterling Silver (made in U.S.A.)

The writing tools has, perhaps, a classic (for this brand of the late period), cylindrical shape, slightly tapered towards the ends and flat top. The main material of the body and cap is Sterling Silver decorated with the Cisele (sometimes also called Cicele) pattern – deep longitudinal-transverse engraving, which defines the pattern as “protruding cubes” (crosshatch grid pattern). The grip is made of black plastic, the cap on friction, with click when closed.

The body is made of sterling silver (925 assay value) and decorated by gilded fittings of tops and clip made in the form of a branded arrow. The plastic grip is made in the form of a triangular shape with rounded corners – now this shape is called ergonomic(anathomic) grip. At the same time, 2 faces have transverse notches for a better grip (grip with fingers) – they are designed for the thumb and forefinger, and the third (lower) edge for the middle finger is made smooth. The end of section is crowned with a special chrome-plated ring with graduated markings – this know-how was invented for convenient adjustment of the nib angles to the paper to the individual setting of each owner’s hand.

The formal ring of the cap have the inscriptions: PARKER, Sterling silver and Made in U.S.A. The tops (sometimes called Tassies) deserve a special mention – in this model they are absolutely flat. These tops correspond to early models and are the most desirable among collectors, in 1970 the design of these flat tops was changed to a “dish-style” design with a small hole in the center of the top, which was conceived as a variant of personalization, like a branding for other companies. The absence of the lacquer filling of the engraving (which was originally present in the early models) suggests that this instrument was produced already in the second half of the 60s, 1968-1970?

The nib: gold, 14 carat (585 samples of gold), small size, which is attached to a plastic feeder on small skids (like modern Pilot Capless or Lamy). The nib, due to its size and mounting structure, can be said to be rigid, although it has some elasticity, i.e. it cannot be called a nail. The nib contains a minimum of information, only the name of brand – PARKER, the fineness of gold – 14K and the country of production – U.S.A. The size of the nib(tip) is indicated on the feed, on the bottom side – 65, which, according to the company’s classification, corresponds to – Fine-Excellent for general writing and note taking, in simple words, the dimension F for everyday writing.

The grip design of this model was a further development of the not very common Parker “VP” model (1962-1964), which in turn became a continuation of the Parker “51” model, but this innovation was “lost” against the background because model was not popular. The innovation consisted of a ring with notches at the end of section with freely rotating nib unit (feed with nibs inside section). This invention was proposed by Kenneth Parker, son of founder George Parker, as a way to make life easier for left-handers, who, unlike right-handers, had a different and often very different grip angle to the paper when writing. So that they could adjust (rotate) the nib to their individual characteristics and this solution was proposed.

Паркер “75” був дітищем Кеннета Паркер у співпраці з дизайнером Доном Доманом (Dom Doman), який на той момент був автором дизайнів Parker “45”, Parker “61”, Parker “T1”, Jotter та Liquid lead. Ця модель вироблялася ще наступні 30 років із незначною зміною дизайну. А лише через кілька місяців, після старту продажів, коли стало зрозуміло, що Parker “75” не був “холостим” пострілом на світ з’явилася і “золота” версія – Insignia.

Про що ще варто згадати? Напевно, про невеликі зміни дизайну. Як я вже згадав, у 1970 році у наверші з’явилося заглиблення (dish-style top), яке призначалося для логотипу компанії при брендуванні. Широке градуйоване кільце (section ring) на секції також пройшло кілька ітерацій зміни: спочатку з нього зник “0”, потім і вимірювальна шкала, а пізніше воно стало трохи вужче, а вже французьке виробництво зробило його пластиковим із позолоченням (але ця позолота мала схильність з часом “сходити” від агресивності сучасного чорнила) і в кінцевому підсумку його зробили зовсім вузьким тільки для утримання ковпачка і відсунули максимально далеко від пера (1991р). Кліп теж зазнав змін. Більш ранні кліпи відрізнялися довгастою і витонченішою формою з малим наконечником і більшим оперенням, але з часом кліп укоротився, став ширшим і масивнішим, наконечник відповідно збільшився, а оперення, навпаки, зменшилося. Також ще можна згадати про самі секції: найперші секції мали навіть сталеву втулку з різьбленням для з’єднання з корпусом і мали більш виражену трикутну анатомічну форму. Для економічності секція спочатку втратила сталеве різьблення і була замінена на цільно-пластикову, а пізніше обриси грипу стали все більш округлятися. Одна з неприємних особливостей цієї пластикової секції полягала в тому, що вона вкрай негативно ставилася до “замочування”, тобто. мити\сушити ніяк не заборонялося, але тривале відмочування від чорнила у воді призводило до знебарвлення (колір ставав сірим) з розтріскуванням самого пластику. Як колекційні особливості можна ще згадати про ручки випущені спеціально для італійського ринку – а примітні вони тим, що всі вони мали унікальний серійний номер нанесений на секцію – зараз цей момент теж є одним із предметів колекціонування. Ще варто згадати що 1970 можна позначити як початок розширення модифікацій в лінійці, і на додаток до вже впізнаваних Cicele та Insignia з дорогоцінних металів, спочатку додалися Fighter DeLuxe з нержавіючої сталі і Insignia Rainbow, а трохи пізніше з’явилися і варіанти з лакуванням.

Саме виробництво моделей Parker “75” було розпочато у США і тривало аж до 1981 року, після чого було перенесено до Франції (Меру), де й здійснювалося до 1994 року. Однак існують моделі, марковані як вироблені в Австралії. Це пов’язано з тим, щоб уникнути австралійського ввізного мита, сервісний центр Паркер в Австралії завозив напівфабрикати елементів ручок як запчастини, потім на місці їх гравіював у візерунок Cisele і відповідно продавав як зроблений кінцевий продукт на території країни. Minutes of history:
Parker “75” was the brainchild of Kenneth Parker in collaboration with designer Dom Doman, who at that time was the author of designs for Parker “45”, Parker “61”, Parker “T1”, Jotter and Liquid lead. Although at the moment Don Doman already had his own design agency (since 1957), he was still the main design consultant for Parker until his retirement in 1986. After the great success with the Parker “51,” the era of fountain pen decline came, and even with the success of the Jotter ballpoint model, Parker did not stop trying to expand his reach into wider markets with introduce of cheaper models such as the Parker “21”, Parker “41” and Parker “45” (high hopes were pinned to this model). However, Kenneth Parker was not satisfied, his desire was to do something next, meaningful and similar to the Parker “51” – to consolidate his mark in history. So despite the relatively high sales of Parker “45” and Jotter, Kenneth has set himself the goal of making a successful and prestigious (expensive and elegant) fountain pen with good everyday writing capabilities, but with a “fresh” modern design. Taking as a basis his previous unpopular development Parker “VP” and the Parker “45” cartridge-converter system (as a legacy of the Eversharp company acquired in 1957), borrowing the drawing of his cigarette case made by a London jeweler, another legend was born – the Parker “75” model. … The model number was supposed to symbolize the anniversary of the founding of the company from 1888. Initially, Kenneth wanted to celebrate the anniversary by making a pen made of gold, but the high cost of the material and competent calculation move aside this idea for some time. Instead it was decided to take high-standard silver (925 sterling silver – 92.5% silver, 7.5 % copper), which, due to its physical characteristics (the ability to be covered with patina and self-polishing in frequently touching parts), over time, would give an additional charm to the item. At the time of release, in 1964, the model had a cost of $ 25 and once again proved that Parker is still capable of creating expensive, but nevertheless popular and demanded things. This model produced for the next 30 years with minor design changes. And just a few months later, after the start of sales, when it became clear that the Parker “75” was not a “blank” shot, the “golden” version, the Insignia, was born.

What else is worth mentioning? Probably about small design changes. As I already mentioned, in 1970 a dish-style top appeared, which was intended for the company logo when branding. A wide graduated ring (on section) also went through several iterations of change: first, the “0” disappeared from it, then the measuring scale, and later it became a little narrower, and already the French production made it plastic with gold-plated (but this gilding had a tendency over time to “come off” from the aggressiveness of modern ink) and eventually it was made very narrow only to hold the cap and moved as far as possible from the pen (1991). The clip has also undergone changes. Earlier clips were distinguished by an elongated and more graceful shape with a small tip and larger plumage, but over time, the clip became shorter, became wider and more massive, the tip increased accordingly, and the plumage, on the contrary, decreased. It can also mention the sections themselves: the very first sections(prototypes?) even had a metal threaded sleeve for connection to the body and had a more pronounced triangular-shaped, anatomical shape. For the sake of economy, the section first lost its steel thread and was changed to plastic one, and later the outlines of the mushroom became more and more rounded. One of the unpleasant things about this plastic section was that it had an extremely negative attitude towards “soaking”, i.e. washing / drying was not prohibited in any way, but prolonged soaking from ink in water led to discoloration (the color became gray-like) and cracking of the plastic itself. As collectible features, I can also mention the pens produced specifically for the Italian market – and they are notable for the fact that they all had a unique serial number printed on the section – now this moment is also one of the collectibles. It is also worth mentioning that 1970 can be designated as the beginning of the expansion of modifications in the line, and in addition to the already recognizable Cicele and Insignia in precious metals, the Fighter DeLuxe in stainless steel and Insignia Rainbow were first added, and a little later, options with entirely lacquered cases appeared.

The production of the Parker “75” models was started in the USA and continued until 1981, after which it was moved to France (Meru) where it was carried out until 1994. However, there are models labeled as made in Australia. This is due to the fact that in order to avoid Australian import duties, the Parker service center in Australia imported fountain pen parts as spare parts, then engraved them in the Cisele pattern on the spot and, accordingly, sold them as a finished as product made in inside the country. The very corporate pattern in the form of cross-hatching, borrowed by Kenneth from his cigarette case and officially patented on September 27, 1966, received the name Cisele only in 1981 after the transfer of production to France, because Cisele is nothing more than a translation of the English word engrave into French , which is sometimes also called erroneously guilloche. The shading grid is made up of 3330 tiny squares. Interestingly, early versions were filled with black walnut charcoal enamel, while later versions no longer had enamel fill, instead allowing the natural oxidation (patina) to darken and accentuate the mesh pattern.

У 1972 році було випущено ще 5 спеціальних екземплярів Apollo XV Moon “75”, які були створені з використанням місячного пилу, привезеного 4-ою експедицією з Місяця «Аполлона-15», що відбулася 26 липня 1971 року. Місячна пилюка була використана при створенні навершій, решта була виконана зі Стерлінгового срібла. Interesting facts about the model “75”:

The first interesting point is this: in the early 60s, the famous treasure hunter Mel Fisher found the wrecks of the Spanish ships Vera Cruz and Cartagena off the coast of Florida in 1715. So, at the suggestion of Don Doman, and with the consent of the directorate, the company bought most of the silver from these treasures and in 1966 a limited edition of the Parker “75” Spanish Treasure Limited Edition was presented, made of this very silver in the amount of 4821 pieces. However, literally in the very next 1968, their production was discontinued, as a result of which the number of these models was so negligible that many collectors do not even know about their existence :). It is known that one of them was carried by Kenneth Parker himself in his pocket, and another of the owners was former Secretary of State William Rogers, who signed the Vietnam Peace Agreement in 1973 with just such a copy.

Another interesting moment in history: US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush used the Parker “75” Cisele models to sign some of the most important nuclear disarmament treaties (INF, Test Ban and START) with Soviet Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin.

The bicentennial of the declaration of independence of the United States in 1976 was marked by the release of a special model made of Pewter (Pewter is an alloy of tin, the content of which can be from 85 to 99% with other metals such as copper, antimony, bismuth) with a smooth surface produced in an amount of 10,000 pieces with price $350 of each.

The special edition Parker “75” Queen Elizabeth was made in 1977 from brass recovered from the luxury liner of the same name, caught on fire and sunk moored in Hong Kong harbor. At that time 5,000 fountain pens were made and sold for $225. As you know, brass is oxidized to a green color, which also gives a certain touch of sophistication to lovers of vintage and antiques.

In 1968, a special Parker Classic “Space Pen” ballpoint pen was made from parts of the NASA Atlas launch vehicle that propelled American astronaut John Glen on his first orbiting space flight. Parts of the accelerator landed and were found in Africa. None of the 250 produced copies of the remains of the transport were available for general sale, but can be identified by their unique engravings – “SA INTO SPACE 20 II 1962 and they were presented as gifts to heads of state and dignitaries. These ballpoint pens were made of Sterling silver and only the top was made from the material of the remains Atlas. Not widely known, but in addition to 250 copies of ballpoint pens, 4 more fountain pens were made, the bodies of which completely consisted of the remains of the carrier rocket. One of these 4x was donated by Parker to John Glenn, the second to President Lyndon B. Johnson, the other two remained with the company. However, one of these copies was later sold at Bonham auction for $ 3,500. Unlike ballpoint, 6 lines of text were engraved on the body of the pen:

In 1972, 5 more special copies of the Apollo XV Moon “75” were released, which were created using the lunar dust brought by the 4th expedition from the Moon “Apollo 15” on July 26, 1971. Moon dust was used to create the tops, the rest was made of Sterling Silver. President Nixon gifted them to various Chinese dignitaries, forging relations with the PRC in 1972. And probably one of those copies was sold for $ 26,500 at Bonham in 2001.

This is how the history of the Parker “75” ends in 1994, when the model was discontinued in favor of the now not unknown Parker Sonnet model that replaced it. But we can say that Parker “75” has become one of the most successful projects in the history of the company. According to Parker, 11 million copies of these models were produced between 1965 and 1981, generating $ 111 million in revenue for the company.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною зараз становить 0.4мм, що цілком відповідає заявленій розмірності F. Ковзання гладке, лінія соковита. Невеликий тиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 0.6мм, але назвати це напівфлексом неможливо. Зворотний бік дає лінію дещо тонше – близько 0.25мм.

The width of the line by the right side is 0.4mm, which is quite consistent with the declared dimension F. The sliding is smooth, the line is juicy. A little pressure allows you to increase the line up to 0.6mm, but it is not possible to call it a semi-flex, since there is no control over the line width. The reverse side gives a slightly thinner line – about 0.25mm.

Врешті: відмінний історичний представник однієї зі знакових моделей компанії при цьому реально підходить для повсякденного використання. На відміну від свого послідовника Parker Sonnet модель не має “хвороби вентиляції” і перо не сохне, дозволяючи без проблем використовувати інструмент і наступного, і через день, починаючи писати з перших дотиків. Чисто візуально Cisele з лаковим заповненням мені подобається більше, але й у такому варіанті інструмент виглядає дуже елегантно. Якщо не шукати вінтажний інструмент з можливостями гнучкого пера, то цю модель сміливо можу рекомендувати до пошуку та покупки, хоча на відомому parkerpens.net говориться навіть про існування напівгнучкого пера до даної моделі.

At the end: an excellent historical model of one of the company’s iconic, while really suitable for everyday use. Unlike its successor Parker Sonnet, the model does not have a “ventilation disease” and the nib does not dry out, allowing you to use the tool on the next day and every other day without any problems with starts to write from the first touches. Purely visually, I like Cisele with varnish filling more, but even in this version, the tool looks very elegant. If you do not look for a very vintage tool with flexible nib, then I can safely recommend this model for search/purchase, although the well-known parkerpens.net even talks about the existence of semi-flexible nibs for this model.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a 2020 American superhero film based on the DC Comics team the Birds of Prey. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the eighth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and a spin-off/sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, and it stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. The film follows Harley Quinn, who after breaking up with the Joker, is threatened by Gotham City crime lord Roman Sionis, and joins forces with Helena Bertinelli, Dinah Lance, and Renee Montoya (who go on to form the Birds of Prey) to save Cassandra Cain.

Update 07.03.2023:

До мене прийшов перовий вузол від Parker 75 якоїсь Gold fill моделі, але був надісланий в корпусі Ciselle з огляду вище, тож я вирішив просто додати до старого посту оновлення, хоча модель трохи молодша.

I received a Parker 75 nib unit from some Gold fill model, but it was sent in Ciselle body from the review above, so I thought I’d just add an update to the old post, even though the model is a bit younger..

Перо: таке саме як з огляду вище тільки біля проби золота додано слово Point.

Nib: same as the review above, only near gold sample mark added the word Point.

За попередніми симптомами перо було перетиснуто та шкрябало. В принципі все так і було, але при детальному огляді мені здалось що перо було трохи деформовано(сам кінчик) в наслідок падіння, але з невеликої висоти. Після виправлення та налаштування, ручка була перевірена чорнилом vtg. Parker Quick Black.

According to previous symptoms, the nib was pinched and scratched. In principle, everything was like that, but upon closer view, it seemed to me that the nib was slightly deformed (the tip itself and near) as a result of fall, but from small height. After correction and adjustment, the nib was tested by vtg. Parker Quick Black ink.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.35-0.4 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,6 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією в 0.3мм, сухо та прозоро.

 The line width by right side is 0.35-0.4 mm, and pressure allows to increase this line to 0.6mm. The reverse side is written with a line of 0.3 mm, dry and transparent.
