Pelikan 120

Hello everybody who are interested in fountain pen! Today, I want to add another vintage instrument from the middle of the last century to the common treasury of community knowledge. No super-duper, just a regular, school, inexpensive pen from a now world-famous brand.

Вітаю всіх, хто цікавиться пером! Сьогодні хочу поповнити спільну скарбничку знань черговим вінтажним інструментом із середини минулого століття. Жодного супер-пупер, це просто звичайна, шкільна, недорога ручка від нині всесвітньо відомого бренду.

Pelikan 120 (made in Germany) 1955-1965

This pen is a cigar-shaped made from plastic in 2 colors: black for the cap, knob and grip and “branded” green for the barrel. The filling system is traditional for this brand – piston filler. The barrel has a ink window for monitoring ink level, which is located between the barrel and grip and is light green color. In general, the shape of the 120 model almost completely repeats the higher 140 model, described on the site earlier here or here, although it has some differences. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, 3/4 turn for closure.

Дана ручка являє собою сигароподібну форму виконану з пластику 2х кольорів: чорний для ковпачка, ручки та грипу і “фірмовий” зелений для основного корпусу. Система заправки традиційно-основна для цього бренду – поршнева (piston filler). Корпус має оглядове віконце для контролю рівня чорнила, яке знаходиться в місці з’єднання бареля з грипом і воно світло-зеленого кольору. Взагалі формою 120 модель практично повністю повторює собою більш дорослу 140 модель, описану на сайті раніше тут чи тут, хоча і має ряд відмінностей. Ковпачок на різьбленні, різьблення 2-х західне, закриття за 3/4 обороту.

As decoration, the cap has a gold-plated clip in the form of “pelican beak”, and gold-plated ring at the base on which is applied: +PELIKAN 120 and on the opposite side GERMANY. There is also an engraving of the model on the cap: Pelikan 120 is written cursive font. The traditional logo in the form of a pelican nest with two chicks crowns the top. I still forgot the moment (to take a picture) .. on the back side of the clip, O and 120 are applied in two lines above the ebb.

В якості прикрас, ковпачок має позолочений кліп у вигляді фірмового “дзьоба пелікану”, і позолочене кільце біля основи на яке нанесено: +PELIKAN 120 і з протилежного боку GERMANY. Також на ковпачку є гравіювання моделі: Pelikan 120 написана курсивом. Навершя вінчає традиційний логотип у вигляді гнізда пелікану з двома пташенятами. Ще забув момент (сфотографувати) .. на внутрішній стороні кліпу, над відливом нанесено в два рядки О і 120.

The nib: steel, gold-plated fairly hard nib of medium size. The nib has the company name Pelikan (by cursive), the logo is a pelican nest with two chicks, and the nib size is EF.

Перо: сталеве, позолочене досить жорстке перо середніх розмірів. На перо нанесено ім’я компанії – Pelikan (курсивом), фірмовий логотип – гніздо пелікану з двома пташенятами та розмірність наконечника – EF.

Moments of history:
The Pelikan 120 model was introduced to the market on May 23, 1955 and became the company’s first school pen. Of course, Pelikan is not the first company to look on the school segment, so it had to strain to come up with its own moves to conquer the market. Since a school pen should be economically inexpensive, this model, unlike the higher 140 celluloid model, was made from plastic and was complete by the simplest steel nib, even if it was gold-plated. There was only one fasion style of this model: “white top, black bottom” (just kidding), green body and black grip, knob with cap. And so that schoolchildren don’t get confused, the company decided to number all the tools with their unique numbers, which were applied to the body in the tail part (hello to Geha:)), right before the piston knob. Early models had a rather short number consisting of two numbers and two letters, but later, after the beginning of the targeted advertising company, the numbering changed to a letter and five numbers. The advertising campaign began in 1958, in which all schoolchildren and students, owners of this Pelikan pens, were invited to register with the company by sending their identification number of the pen with the owner’s name and as a thanks they received a badge with Pelikan logo. It is noteworthy that the Pelikan 120 became the first and last piston-filler school pen of the company and served as the beginning of the school brand – Pelikano, which was released in 1960, as a result of collecting experience, feedback and impressions from using the 120 model. The 120 model was produced until 1965, although it was still on store shelves in 1967.
Later, along with the reincarnated 400NN, Merz & Krell produced this slightly modified model from 1973 to 1977 under the Pelikan brand. Unlike the original version, new model has become a little thinner, but at the same time longer; the piston knob lost the “step” and began to look straight to body; the grip also lost its step in front before nib and became more straight, narrowing a little; the clip became with a more massive beak, and the gold ring became chamfered. It is noteworthy that Merz&Krell, in addition to the branded black and green version, also produced a full-black model.
In 2016, the company released a retro version based on the 120 model, calling it Special Edition M120N, and in 2018, a new model was released in blue.

Модель Pelikan 120 була представлена ринку 23 травня 1955 і стала першою шкільною ручкою компанії. Звичайно Пелікан не перша компанія, яка почала дивитися у бік шкільного сегменту, тому їй довелося піднапрягтися, щоб придумати свої ходи для завоювання ринку. Оскільки шкільна ручка повинна бути економічно недорогою, то дана модель на відміну від старшої моделі з целулоїду була виготовлена цілком з пластику і комплектувалася найпростішим сталевим пером, нехай навіть і позолоченим. Фасон даної моделі був тільки одна: “білий верх, чорний низ” (жартую), зелений корпус та чорний грип, ручка поршня з ковпачком. А щоб школярі не плутали де чия ручка, компанія вирішила пронумерувати всі інструменти своїми унікальними номерами, які наносилися на корпус у хвостовій частині(привіт до Гехи:)), прямо перед ручкою поршня. Ранні моделі мали досить короткий номер, що складається з двох цифр і двох букв, а пізніші, після початку спрямованої рекламної компанії, нумерація змінилася на букву і п’ять цифр. Рекламна кампанія почалася в 1958 році в якій пропонувалося всім школярам і студентам, власників ручок пелікан, зареєструватися в компанії відправивши свій ідентифікаційний номер ручки та прізвище ім’я власника, а натомість компанія, на підтвердження, дарувала власнику синьо-золотий значок з зображенням логотипа компанії. Примітно, що Pelikan 120 стала першою та останньою поршневою шкільною ручкою компанії і послужила початком шкільної гілки – модельного ряду Pelikano, яка вийшла у світ у 1960 році, як результат збору досвіду, відгуків та вражень від використання 120 моделі. Сама 120-я модель випускалася ще аж до 1965 року, хоча на прилавках магазинів зустрічалася ще й у 1967 році.
Пізніше, разом з реінкарнованою моделлю 400NN, компанія Merz & Krell випускала цю, трохи видозмінену, модель з 1973 по 1977 під брендом Pelikan. На відміну від оригінальної версії ця модель стала трохи тоншою, але водночас і довшою; ручка поршня позбулася “сходинки” і стала виглядати врівень з корпусом; грип втратив свою сходинку перед пером і став лінійним, трохи звужуючись; кліп став з більш масивним дзьобом, а золоте кільце набуло фаски. Примітно, що Merz & Krell, крім фірмового чорно-зеленого виконання, випускала ще й цілком чорну модель.
У 2016 році компанія випустила ретро версію за мотивами 120 моделі, назвавши її Special Edition M120N, а в 2018 вийшла нова модель у блакитному виконанні.

Overall dimensions of tool: folded length – 124mm, without cap – 113mm. The diameter of the body is 11.8 mm, at the middle of grip – 9.5 mm. The full weight is – 14g, and without cap – 9g.

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина у складеному стані – 124мм, при знятому ковпачку – 113мм. Діаметр корпусу – 11.8мм, у середині грипу – 9.5мм. Повна вага складає – 14гр, а без ковпачка – 9гр.

Інструмент до мене потрапив на відновлення з заклинившим поршнем та луснувшим корпусом, а також сколом на ручці поршня. Після лікування інструмент був перевірений “як належить”:).

The tool came to me for restoration with stuck piston and cracked barrel, as well as a chip on the piston knob. After repairs, the tool was checked “as usual”:).

The width of ordinary line by right side is 0.3 mm. The pressure can be slightly increased due to a small divergence of the tines and flow increase up to 0.7 mm. The reverse side gives a line of 0.2 mm. The glide is smooth, the flow is moderate. At first, the tip was pinched and gave a too transparent line due to an extremely dry feed.

Ширина простої лінії прямою стороною становить 0.3мм. Натиск дозволяє трохи збільшити за рахунок невеликої розбіжності кінчиків та збільшення подачі до 0.7мм. Зворотний бік дає лінію в 0.2мм. Ковзання гладке, подача помірна. Спочатку перо було перетиснуте і давало надто прозору лінію через вкрай суху подачу.

В решті решт: виходячи з розмірів це повний аналог 140 моделі, але цілком пластиковий однотонний корпус, на відміну від звичного смугастого, вносить невеликий хаос і дискомфорт у свідомість:). Єдине, зустрічав таку інформацію в інтернеті, що дані шкільні ручки мали суто жорстке пір’я, вже не знаю чому, бо німецькі шкільні ручки якраз і славляться своїм напівгнучким перами при загальній ціновій доступності. Тож любителям напів-флексів та недорогих інструментів треба бути уважними:). Можливо це тільки чутки, у мене немає такої статистики поки що, і ймовірно Merz&Krell відійшов від цієї парадигми, але це безперечно варто тримати в по думках заради перевірки:). В іншому, попри шкільність, все зроблено якісно і добротно і ці ручки залишаються, як і раніше, надійними компаньйонами в письмі.

At the end: based on the dimensions, it is a full analogue to the 140 model, but the plastic one-tone body, unlike the usual celluloid striped on 140, brings a little chaos and discomfort to the mind :). The only thing is, I came across such information on the Internet that these school pens had hard nibs, I don’t know why, because German school pens are well known for their semi-flexible nibs at a generally affordable price. So lovers of semi-flexes and inexpensive tools should be careful :). Maybe it’s just a rumor, I don’t have such statistics yet, and probably Merz&Krell has moved away from this paradigm, but it’s definitely worth keeping in mind for verification :). Otherwise, despite the schooliness, everything is done qualitatively and solid build, and these pens remain, as before, reliable companions in writing.

Update 1:

Як перший апдейт поділюся експериментом з відновлення втраченого фрагмента ручки поршня. Як матеріал використовував епоксидну смолу. У чому полягав експеримент? У тому що епоксидна смола – прозора, а як барвник я вирішив спробувати дуже чорну туш Dr. Ph. Martins Bombay Black India Ink. Все було чудово, проте я вирішив прискорити процес затвердіння методом підігріву і трохи перестарався. Фрагмент вийшов трохи пористим, і його не врятувало навіть полірування, але саму частину видно лише при пильному розгляді.

As the first addon, I will share an experiment on restoring a lost fragment of a piston handle. Epoxy was used as a material. What was the experiment? Because the epoxy is transparent, and as a dye I decided to try a very black india ink Dr. Ph. Martins Bombay Black India Ink. Everything was great, but I decided to speed up the curing process with heating and overdid it a bit. The fragment turned out to be a little porous, and even polishing did not change it, but the part itself is visible only under close examination.
