(modern) Conklin Omniflex nib unit

Приветствую вас любители пера! Сегодня я хотел бы рассказать об очередной покупке, очередном опыте, но не об самой ручке. Саму ручку я очень подробно описал в посте Conklin Crescent “Mark Twain” Carbon-fiber Stealth DeLuxe, где и упомянул что хочу поменять перо и вот пришло время:). Я долго выбирал где купить и какое перо, а итоге купил перо у SpeerBob.

Hello, pen lovers! Today I would like to show you another purchase, another experience, but not a fountain pen. I detailed reviewed the pen itself in other post Conklin Crescent “Mark Twain” Carbon-fiber Stealth DeLuxe, where I mentioned that I want to change the nib and now the time has come :). I spent a long time choosing where to buy and which nib, and in the end I bought this nib from SpeerBob on EBay.

Conklin Omniflex #6 nib unit

Этот перьевой узел, как сообщает производитель, подходит ко многим моделям Conklin, включая All American, Duragraph, Empire, Herringbone и Nozac, и даже к некоторым моделям Monteverde (Invincia, Mountains of the World, Regatta Sport и Rodeo Drive). Модели “Марка Твена” нет в списке видимо потому что выше назвваные модели имеют вкручивающийся collar для быстрой и удобной смены пишущего узла(nib unit), а в модели “Mark Twain” Crescent он вклеен в грип. В целом же и перья и фидеры абсолютно идентичны.

This nib unit to fit many Conklin models, including All American, Duragraph, Empire, Herringbone and Nozac, and even some Monteverde models (Invincia, Mountains of the World, Regatta Sport and Rodeo Drive). Models “Mark Twain” are not in the list, apparently because the above named models have a screwing collar for quick and simply change of the nib unit, and in the “Mark Twain” Crescent model this collar is glued into the grip. In general, both nib and feed are absolutely identical.

Перо: собственно само перо, как и стандартное, выполнено из стали. Я не уверен по поводу нержавеющей стали, потому что оригинальное перо на этой ручке частично было подвержено коррозии(см фото в теме Conklin Crescent). На перо нанесены: FLEX, Conklin в овале – имя брэнда, и Toledo USA – как и на других перьях этой компании. Помимо всего прочего перо имеет характерные вырезы по бокам “крыльев” которые должны придавать гибкости кончикам, но фактически перо жесткое и слово “флекс” для него неуместно. Это не флекс прям ни капельки!!! Размерность пера не указана, но она для данной модели бывает только одной и судя по тесту ниже она соответствует размерности FM.

The nib: the nib itself, as well as the standard Conklin nib, is made of steel. I’m not sure about stainless steel because the original nib on this pen was partially corroded (see photo in Conklin Crescent post). On the nib embossed: FLEX, Conklin in an oval (brand name), and Toledo USA – as well as other nibs of this company. Among other things, the nib has characteristic cutouts on the sides of the shoulders which should give flexibility to the tines, but in fact the nib is rigid and the word “Flex” is inappropriate for it. This is NOT FLEX!!!! The tip size is not indicated, but it is only one have for this model nib unit and judging by the test below it can be F-M.

Скажу честно я ожидал намного большего (прям намного с учетом того что получил) от этого пера и был в небольшом предвкушении, но то что я получил – это лишь разочарование и грусть:(. Когда я получил перо, естественно я попробовал его пальцами на бумаге прям в составе перьевого узла “по сухому” без чернил: перо писало прямой стороной очень гладко (прям очень), обратная же сторона откровенно царапала. Взглянув под увеличением я понял по чему: сведением половинок никто не занимался после монтажа, а протестировав и обнаружив проблему, просто взял и заполировал твердосплавное окончание (я так думаю). Потому что одна половинка(правая) в верхней точке была чуть выше другой(левой) при этом правильной стороной перо чувствовалось очень гладким.

To be honest, I expected a lot more (just a lot taking into account what I got) from this nib but what I got was just disappointment and sadness :(. When I received the pen, naturally I tried it with my fingers on paper by “dry writing”(without ink): the nib wrote by the right side very smoothly, while the reverse side was frankly scratching. Looking under the magnification, I understood why: no one was aligned tines and tip after mounting, but after testing and finding the problem, someone on factory simply polished the tip on right side(I think so). Because one half (right) at the top was slightly higher than the other (left), but the right(lower) side of the tip was aligned and felt very smooth.

Для фотографий данного поста, как и для всех остальных, я первым делом разобрал пишущий узел для фотографий элементов, потом естественно промыл все и собрал уже в инструмент. Более того я даже убрал царапанье обратной стороной ибо планировал ее использовать в тесте. Я использовал именно этот фидер что был с пером, а после заправил ручку и вот тут меня случился шок – это самое отвратительное перо что у меня было до данного момента – это не просто хард старт, а прям хард-хард-хард регулярные не старты. Ниже пример работы этого пера. Для тех кто не может прочесть с первого раза продублирую: “Very smooth write by right side with very hard starts and scratchy by reverse side. This nib can’t normal write:(”

For the photos of this post, as well as for all the others, I first of all disassembled the nib unit for photographs of the pars, then naturally I cleaned everything and assembled it into a tool. Moreover, I even removed the scratching for the reverse side because I planned to use it in the test. I used this particular feed that was with this nib unit, and then filled the pen and here I was shocked – this is the most disgusting nib that I had up to this moment – it’s not just a hard start, but hard-hard-hard non-starts. Below is sample of how this nib is write. For those who can’t read from first try I duplicate: “Very smooth write by right side with very hard starts and scratchy by reverse side. This nib can’t normal write :(“

Заодно попробовал и как перо флексирует – и оказалось что никак. Иногда мне даже кажется что его флекс даже меньше чем на ординарном пере Conklin установленном на том же Duragraph и кастомизированное перо Noodlers Flex по сравнению с ним, как Hunt 101 Imperial по сравнению с почтовым пером.

At the same time, I tried how the nib is flexes – and it turned out that it didn’t. Sometimes it even seems to me that flex is even less than on a regular Conklin nib mounted on the Duragraph models and a customized Noodlers Flex nib compared to it, as the Hunt 101 Imperial compared to a postal nib:).

Естественно я слил чернила и снова разобрал перьевой узел с целью устранения baby bottom с возможной пережатостью пера.

Naturally I drained the ink and disassembled the nib to remove the baby bottom effect with possible pinching of the tines.

После обслуживания и настройки перо начало писать, вероятно, как должно было писать с самого начала.

After service and adjust, the nib began writing, probably as it should have written from the beginning.

Я не уверен в точности соответствия задуманной лощине линии, поскольку для устранения baby bottom я снял необходимое количества материала с твердосплавной напайки вдоль разреза. Ширина линии на “проблемном” тесте чернилами Diamine Ancient Cooper составляла 0.5мм прямой стороной и 0.3мм обратной стороной. После исправления проблем, ширина линии прямой стороной составляет 0.45мм, а обратной стороной 0.35мм. Старт стабильный, подача ровная, скольжение гладкое. Нажим условно увеличивает линию до 0.6мм (иногда до 0.7мм) в основном за счет увеличения подачи чернил.

I am not sure if the line is exactly as intended as I removed the required some of tip material along the slit of tip to eliminate the baby bottom. The line width on the “problem” test with Diamine Ancient Cooper ink was 0.5mm by the right side and 0.3mm on the reverse. After fixing the problems, the line width by the right side has 0.45mm and the reverse side has 0.35mm width. Stable start, normel flow ink and smooth sliding. The pressure conditionally increases the line to 0.6mm (sometimes up to 0.7mm) mainly due to the increase the ink flow.

В итоге: сказать что я разочарован это ничего не сказать. С другой стороны отрицательный опыт это тоже нужный опыт, так что в конечном итоге я крайне не рекомендую это перо к покупке, особенно если вы не умете исправлять проблемы с перьями. Но даже опытный пользователь будет на мой взгляд расстроен. В оправдании можно лишь учесть невысокую стоимость этого перьевого узла, хотя тот-же Noodler Flex стоит почти в 3 раза меньше. За себя я могу сказать что я категорически настроен дальше кастомизировать это перо, но результатах сообщу немного позже:).

At the end: to say that I’m disappointed is to say nothing. On the other hand, a negative experience is also a necessary experience, so in the end it’s good experience. I highly discourage this nib for purchase, especially if you do not know how to fix problems with nibs. But even an experienced user will be upset in my opinion. In justification, one can only take into account the low cost of this nib unit, although the same Noodler Flex costs almost 3 times less. For myself, I can say that I am categorically determined to further customize this nib, but I will report the results a little later :).

Update 1:

В качестве первого апдейта обнаружил вот такую необычность связанную не с пером, а с ручкой для которой предназначалось перо. Металлические части, за 4 месяца нерегулярного использования, покрылись патиной больше характерной для серебряных элементов. Я не знаю какой металл использует Conklin для фурнитуры, так что если кто может подсказать просьба оставить сообщение для общего кругозора.

As the first addon, I discovered this kind of unusualness associated not with the nib, but with the fountain pen for which the nib was intended. The metal parts, after 4 months of irregular use, have become covered with a patina more characteristic of silver elements. I don’t know what kind of metal Conklin uses for its fittings, so if anyone can know it, please leave a message for the share.

Патина достаточно легко убирается мягкой салфеткой с небольшим количеством зубного порошка:). Спасибо коллегам Алексею(readytotalk), Юрию(ЮрийЮВ) и Сергею(SVN) за информацию о материале: оказывается Conklin серебрит фурнитуру покрывая ей мельхиор(сплав медь-никель) или нейзильбер(сплав медь-никель-цинк).

Patina can be easily removed with a soft napkin with a small amount of tooth powder :). Thanks to colleagues Alexey (readytotalk), Yuri (ЮрийЮВ) and Sergey (SVN) for information about the material: it turns out that Conklin silver fittings by covering cupronickel (copper-nickel alloy) or nickel silver (copper-nickel-zinc alloy).

Erich Maria Remarque (born Erich Paul Remark) was a 20th-century German novelist. His landmark novel All Quiet on the Western Front (1928), about the German military experience of World War I, was an international best-seller which created a new literary genre, and was subsequently made into the film All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). A year after the publication of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the film of the same name was shot, which won two Oscars. The royalties from the film and the book allowed Remarque to earn a large fortune, a significant part of which he spent on the purchase of paintings by Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Renoir. One of the first acquisitions – the landscape by Van Gogh “Railway bridge over the Avenue Montmajour”. Remarque approached the issue of collecting with all the pedantry – he independently studied a huge number of books on art history and became an expert in painting.
