Hello! Today I want to show you one of the most iconic and probably the most ageless (54 years of production without constructive changes) instrument, but still with a modern design, which still remains almost the flagship of its brand.

Lamy 2000 Black w|14K M nib (made in Germany) L01M

Важко визначити дизайн загальної форми одним словом, але скажу що він мабуть схожий на профіль стрімкого птаха (без ковпачка) і трохи схожий на Pilot Myu або Parker Falcon, але трохи пузатіший. It is difficult to define the overall shape design in one word, but I will say that it is perhaps similar to the profile of a swift bird (without a cap) and a little similar to the Pilot Myu or Parker Falcon, but a little more bellied. In fact, the material of the grip is a mixed, two-piece, where the base is made of stainless steel with a Makrolon overlay before connecting to the barrel. From what considerations it was made two-part is unclear, it would be technologically more convenient to make this part a single whole, while the design would hardly suffer. On the barrel there is a small transparent window consisting of 4 sections to control the ink level. The cap is snapped into place by means of steel “ears” that are installed between the grip and barrel. On the piston knob at the top, there is a small steel medallion, once the model’s logo was located on it – L.

The cap is decorated only with a steel clip made in the style of the general design. On the clip side there is an inscription of the Lamy brand, and on the bottom, the country of origin – Germany 1.

The nib: gold, 14k, size M, platinum plated. The nib is very small, not typical for Lamy, but pleasantly resilient with a very smooth glide. The first thing that comes to mind when looking at the nib is a comparison with another very small nib in the Parker 100. The nib, as with other Lamy models, is attached to feed by slides. On nib imprints only 585 (gold sample) and the brand name is LAMY.

Minutes of history:
Joseph C. Lamy was Parker’s Export Director until the 1920s. In 1927 he returned to Heidelberg as general manager of Parker Germany, which had invested a large sum in the famous German company Osmia with plans to manufacture Duofold in Germany. However, the tandem of the two companies was not destined to cooperate for a long time, because in 1929, due to low demand, Parker withdrew its investment, thereby putting Osmia on the brink of bankruptcy. Joseph Lamy resigns and moves to Berlin to start his own celluloid pen company under the Orthos Fullhalterfabrik CJ Lamy brand. Overall, the pens were very similar to the Parker Duofold, but with a wide range of colors and were produced in two sizes, and in 1933 Lamy received the first patent for a combined pencil-pen and launched a large pen that was supposed to compete with the Duofold. All pens from this period were sold under the Orthos brand.
Joseph Lamy’s good business sense of the market prompted the potential of plastic and therefore acquires the plastic development company Artus Fullaltergesellschaft Kaufmann und Co.. With the acquisition of a new technology, the production of new, plastic handles with a new (patented) piston filling system begins, under the new brand “Artus”. However, it is unclear whether the production of these plastic pens began with the acquisition of “Artus Fullaltergesellschaft Kaufmann und Co.” (around 1939) or only after the war. It is also unclear when the company stopped using the Orthos trademark, but at least until 1941 the brands existed in parallel, even after the production was transferred in 1940.

In subsequent years, the range was replenished with new models, such as Artus Rekord, Perfect, Favorit, Ballit, Schulüller, Prinz, Junior. Artus has focused on the production of economical and functional pens with a focus on the student / school market. In 1949, Artus was renamed C. Josef Lamy GMBH, and Joseph Lamy set up mail-order sales of his instruments bypassing the stationery dealer network. In this form, the brand existed until 1972. However, in 1952, the company launched the first pen under the Lamy brand – the Lamy 27 with piston filler and semi-closed nib reminiscent of the Parker 51 design. Despite a similar design, the Lamy 27 was a pen with its own personality and know-how, the feed named as Tintomatic used to this day – this is the same form of feed we know, where the ink channel is hidden under a special tab, which ensures a constant flow of ink regardless of temperature changes and pressure.

And now we come to the most relevant – in 1966 the company created what is considered its masterpiece to this day – Lamy 2000. To realize this pen, Lamy turned to Gerd A. Müller, a famous industrial designer, a follower of the movement Bauhaus – “form follows function”. A new innovative product was chosen as the material – Makrolon, a glass fiber reinforced polycarbonate plastic. Equipped with a piston filling mechanism, this pen is considered one of the best examples of modern design to this day for its simplicity of form and functionality of the solution. In the following years, Lamy always followed the trends in design and created functional and non-standard pens without paying attention to the luxulry accessories, but also not producing cheap disposable items (like as BIC), with minimal necessary costs. Lamy has managed to stay in the writing market thanks to its ability to create modern and unique designs as well as the direct purpose of writing tools.

Some FPNers conducted a small (large) study on minor iterations of the model design and this is what at results:

• The first generation has the L logo on the disc located at the end of the piston knob. The clip lacks the Lamy imprint on the side. “Lamy 2000 W. Germany” is printed on the lower edge of the cap. The clamping part of the clip is made in the form of a ball bearing. The nib size is marked on the bottom of the section just below the “ears”.
• The second generation also has an L on the piston knob disc. The brand name Lamy appeared on the side of the clip, and W. Germany on the underside of the clamp. The clamp is solid-cast with machining.
• The third generation has no L logo on the knob top. The brand name is located on the clip side and on the underside surface “Germany 1” or “Germany 2”. The clip is solid, slightly larger with machining.
• The fourth generation is almost identical to the third, but the section is solid in the area of ​​the breathing hole (in earlier versions it was a plastic insert).

In addition, there are also several special editions dedicated to the Millennium (2000), the 50th anniversary of model (2016) and the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus (2019).

Usually, before each review or test, I completely(or partial) disassemble the pen and do full or partial service(clear), but in this case I decided to check how the tool works from “out of the box”, because this is almost the company’s flagship.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,55-0,6 мм, невеликий натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 1,0 мм. Зворотний бік пише дуже сухо і дає лінію близько 0.15мм.

The width of an ordinary line by right side is 0.55-0.6mm, a slight pressure allows you to increase the line to 1.0mm. The reverse side writes very dry and has a line of about 0.15mm.

Зрештою: для мене дуже неоднозначний інструмент. Я довго думав що мені про нього написати? З одного боку цікавий, красивий, історичний та сучасний вигляд з дуже незвичайним матеріалом, з іншого боку, поки я малював тестовий ескіз я разів 20 хотів кинути його об стіну. Ручка то пише, то не пише, при цьому перо завжди вологе і з чорнилом – дуже часто вона відмовлялася писати по написаному, а для малюнка це важливо. Чим гладше папір, тим більше проблем. Загалом я був засмучений та здивований і злий за своє рішення купити цю ручку. Але коли я готував поста та шукав інформацію по модель я випадково потрапив на Амазон і прочитав кілька коментарів – так один настільки точно відображає мої відчуття що я дозволю собі його просто скопіювати сюди – автор ніби стояв у мене за спиною або сидів у мені 🙂 – дякую Rennysoncemann.

“Купуючи даний інструмент, як флагмана компанії я намагався ігнорувати рекламні гасла типу “Ви можете витратити більше (набагато більше), але кращого письменника ви не знайдете”, але зовнішній вигляд мене приваблював своєю незвичністю та нестандартністю. Що ж, мій Pilot Capless був дешевшим і працює краще, ніж цей Lamy Не те щоб Lamy був поганий, але проблема є в сумно відомій “солодкий плямі” (sweetspot) Lamy 2000. Однак я не робитиму цього, оскільки для мене це не проблема, а дизайн інструментів компанії завжди відрізняється індивідуальністю. Поки що я переконую себе, що мені не щастить:).

At the end: for me, a very controversial tool. I thought for a long time what should I write about it? On the one hand, this is an interesting, beautiful, historical and modern tool with very unusual material, on the other hand, while I was drawing a test sketch, I wanted to throw it against the wall 20 times. The nib sometimes writes, sometimes does not write, while the feed and nib is always wet with ink – very often it refused to write onthe already written place, but this is important for a drawing. When smoother the paper, then more problems. In general, I was upset, bewildered and angry about my decision to buy this pen. But when I was preparing a post and looking for information by this model, I accidentally got to Amazon and read several comments – and so one of them reflects my feelings so accurately that I will allow myself to just copy it here – the author seemed to be standing behind me or sitting in me 🙂 – thanks to Rennysoncemann.

“When buying this tool, as the flagship of the company, I tried to ignore advertising slogans like” You can spend more (much more), but you will not find a better writer “, but the appearance attracted me with its uniqueness and non-standard. Well, my Pilot Capless was cheaper and it works better than this Lamy. Not that the Lamy is bad – the problem is that infamous Lamy 2000 “sweet spot”. If you cannot hold the pen at a certain (exact) angle, it will skip and that very unpleasantly annoying, and quite quickly. And it is very difficult to hold the pen in the correct position, because the nib is difficult to see and there’s no well defined grip section, which might have helped a little (from me: how it all reminds me of the Parker 100, but this one even wrote without problems :)). Of course it is not the end of the world, but it makes the pen more difficult to use than any other. Is it worth the hassle? Maybe for some people, but not for me. If you hold the pen correctly, this pen writes very smoothly, but I’m not interested in focusing so much on how to hold the pen rather than what to writes with pen. There are many other nibs out there that write as well as the L2K without requiring an ideal position.
Much has been said on the Internet about the Lamy 2000 sweet spot – Goulet Pens even has a video on this issue (Google “Lamy 2000 Sweet Spot Video”), which is a sign that L2K has already acquired this reputation with flaw. These posts contain many statements, which basically boil down to the following: the pen is temperamental; you have to hold it right in order for pen to be “happy”; if you don’t make nib “happy,” pen will “be mad at you”. The Goulet video goes on to say that the grind of the nib is responsible for this narrow sweet spot, although (unlike me) they don’t consider it a defect. Still, they never cite any advantages to this “funny” grind – it doesn’t make the pen write any better – just that it can cause you grief. And in the end, a small, hard-to-see nib only exacerbates the problem.
There are items in this world that are difficult to use, but do have superior performance when used well – Ferraris and racehorses come to mind – but the Lamy 2000 nib doesn’t perform any better than any quality gold nib, in spite of its temperamental nature. So what’s the “point”?
Although I’m disappointed with the pen, I’ve decided to keep it – it looks kind of cool, and works pretty well when I’m focused enough to keep it “happy”. However if I’m tired or feeling grumpy I use a different pen that isn’t as demanding.
In spite of my problems with the Lamy 2000, it’s nevertheless the best Lamy I’ve ever had, by far! I’ve bought several cheap Lamy pens in the past – Safari, Vista, Al-Star, Joy, plus several extra (steel) nibs – and without exception they all suck, dry and skippy, sometimes hard to get to work at all, basically junk. By comparison the L2K is a jewel, it’s actually usable … “

I, like the author of the review, had no luck with the Lamy that I had, and if I didn’t know how to fix it, then I would probably also “give up” on this brand, especially after such problems with the flagship. However, I will not do this, since this is not a problem for me, and the design of the company’s tools is always different from other. While I convince myself that I am just no luck with Lamy pens yet:).

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4мм, ймовірно це пояснюється чорнилом Noodlers Ottoman Azure, що більш текучи. Подача рясна, лінія волога. The ordinary line width by the right side is 0.4mm, probably due to the more flowing Noodlers Ottoman Azure ink. The flow is abundant, the line is wet. Pressing allows this line to be increased to 0.6mm due to an even more flow ink. The slide is smooth. The reverse side is traditionally extremely sharp, after additional polishing it gives out a more moderate line with a width of 0.3mm.

В решті: як мені сказав власник це не орігінальне перо, що було замінено в офіційному сервісі. З одного боку це перо без описаної вище хвороби “солодкої плями” і пише без проблем у будь-яких напрямках, але з іншого боку воно втратило всю красу м’якого пера і перетворилося на сумне ординарне. У мене немає ніякої інформації про те чи регулярні ці властивості сучасних пер або це випадкові (виключні), хоча безперечно жорстке перо мені подобається менше м’якого, що було раніше.

At the end: as the say me owner, this is not a original nib, which was replaced in the official service. On the one hand, this nib does not have famous “sweet spot” disease described above and writes without any problems, but on the other hand it has lost all the charm of the soft nib and turned into a sadenly ordinary one. I don’t have any information about whether this is a regular feature of last modern nibs or if it is random (exceptional), but definitely a hard nib I like much less than what was before, soft.

Steven Vincent Buscemi is an American actor and filmmaker. Один з моїх клієнтів звернувся до мене з проханням знайти та придбати йому Lamy 2000  з пером EF та перевірити, щоб він міг заправити та користуватись без жодних проблем. Так в моїх руках з’явився ще один  L2K для доповнення бази знань.

One of my clients asked me to find and buy him Lamy 2000 with EF nib and check that he could fill and use pen without any problems. So, in my hands another L2K for update knowledge base.

Із цікавого те що перо так саме жорстке як і в попередньому EF, тож я не знаю чи пов’язано це з розмірністю пера або з роком випуску, бо інші пера яки я зустрічав на L2K були приємно м’якими, але жодне з них не було розмірністю EF.

From the interesting thing that this nib is as hard as in the previous EF, so I do not know whether it is related to the tip dimension or by year of production, because the other nibs I tested on L2k were pleasantly soft but none of them was an EF dimension.

Ручка була придбана як б/у, тому повністю обслугована та після цього протестована. Тестове чорнило: Diamine Pumpkin.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,6 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією в 0.25 мм. Прямою стороною лінія вологіша за нормальну.

На останок тестовий ескіз.
Під Бахмутом загинула волонтер, військовослужбовець та бойова медикиня 93 бригади “Холодний Яр” Яна (“Яра”) Рихлицька. Це сталося під час евакуації поранених у п’ятницю, 3 березня. Яна рівно місяць не дожила свого 30-річчя.

Finally, a test sketch.
Yana (“Yara”) Rykhlytska, a volunteer, solder and combat medic of the 93rd “Kholodny Yar” brigade, died near Bakhmut. It happened during the evacuation of the wounded on Friday, March 3. Yana’s 30th birthday was exactly one month away.

Яна Рихлицька народилася 2 квітня 1993 року у Вінниці. До повномасштабного вторгнення Росії в Україну вона працювала в IT-компанії. З 24 лютого 2022 року почала активно волонтерити, а у травні пішла служити парамедиком до Збройних сил, де врятувала чимало життів.

Yana Rykhlytska was born on April 2, 1993 in Vinnytsia. Before russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, she worked in an IT company. From February 24, 2022, she started actively volunteering, and in May she went to army as a paramedic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where she saved many lives.

Lamy 2000 Black w|14K EF nib (made in Germany) L01EF

Зовнішній вигляд повністю ідентичний до описаних вище. Звичайною стороною перо писало доволі гладко без проблем, зворотний бік шкрябав та зовсім не писав. Пісоя налаштування протестував чорнилом Monteverge Amethyst з серії Gemstone.

The exterior is completely identical to the above. The normal side of the nib wrote quite smoothly without problems, the reverse side scratched and did not write at all. After adjusting, tested by Monteverde Amethyst from Gemstone series.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,6 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією в 0.2 мм. Прямою стороною лінія вологіша за нормальну.

В решті: я вже не пам’ятаю яка за рахунком ця ручка, але кожна модель з пером EF має значно жорсткіше перо ніж ті що мені зустрічались з М та B, і це дивно, бо я розумію що матеріал однаковий. Другий момент те що в котрий раз поспіль перо з розміром EF пише як європейська F з доволі вологою подачею. Але в решті ручка непогана, хоча для моєї руки занадто легка. Я би бажав, щоб її вага була десь по середині між макролоновою та з нержавіючої сталі.

At the end: I don’t remember how much these nibs I tested yet, but every model with EF nib has a much harder nib than the ones I’ve seen with M or B nib, and it’s strange, because I understand that the material is the same. The second point is that once again, a nib with EF size writes like a western F with a rather wet flow. But at the rest, this pen is not bad, although it is too light for my hand. I would like it weight to be somewhere in the middle between macrolon and stainless steel versions.

За мирного життя Артур був співробітником Ukrainian Film Division. Про загибель захисника 9 квітня  повідомив український кінорежисер та продюсер Любомир Левицький.
Артур у своєму останньому інтерв’ю розповів, що виріс у сім’ї військовослужбовців. З 15 років він навчався у військовому ліцеї. Боєць розповідає, що у 2015 році отримав тяжку контузію, коли у складі добровольчої групи воював в зоні АТО. “Святий” зізнався, що його батько живе у тимчасово окупованому Донецьку та активно підтримує “ДНР”. Крім того, з 2017 року чоловік працює у там у штабі.
Ще у своїй розповіді Артур наполягав, що потрібно жити тут і зараз. Саме тому, коли у жовтні він отримав відпустку, то миттю одружився зі своєю коханою.

During his peaceful life, Artur was an employee of the Ukrainian Film Division. The Ukrainian film director and producer Lyubomyr Levytskyi reported on this death on April 9 of the defender.
In his last interview, Artur said that he grew up in a family of military personnel. From the age of 15, he studied at the military lyceum. The fighter says that in 2015 he received a severe concussion while fighting in the ATO zone as part of a volunteer group. “Svyatiy” admitted that his father lives in temporarily occupied Donetsk and actively supports the “DNR”. In addition, since 2017, the man has been working there in the headquarters.
Also in his interview, Arthur insisted that it is necessary to live here and now. That is why, when he received a leave in October, he immediately married his beloved.
