Привет всем! После ознакомления с современными моделями данного бренда меня никак не покидало желание ознакомится с историческими моделями. Давайте это сделаем вместе.

Hi everybody! After getting acquainted with the modern models of this brand, the desire to get acquainted with the historical models never left me. Let’s do it together.

Esterbrook SJ (made in USA) 1948-1957

Форма данной ручки представлена цилиндром со слегка сужающимся концами из пластика красного цвета с перламутровыми переливами(Dubonnet Red). Оба окончания закрыты заглушками из черного пластика именуемыми “jewel”. Интересно что секция выполнена из эбонита, хотя во многих описаниях данной модели фигурирует пластик. Система заправки – рычажная. Колпачок на резьбе, резьба 4х заходная, закрытие/открытие за 1 и 3/4 оборотов.

The shape of this pen is cylindrical, slightly tapering towards the ends, made of red plastic with pearlescent tints(Dubonnet Red). Both ends are closed with black plastic top called “jewel“. It is interesting that the section is made of ebonite, although plastic appears in many descriptions of this model. The filling system is a lever-filler. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, closing/opening in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Общий дизайн очень простой, на корпусе имеется гравировка – Esterbrook ® и Made in U.S.A., рычаг заправки стальной.

The overall design is very simple, on the body is engraved – Esterbrook® and Made in U.S.A., the lever is steel.

Клип выполнен из того же материала как и рычаг, скорее всего из нержавеющей стали, имеет два фигурных желобка и тиснение бренда Esteerbrook. Навершие в торце, так-же отделено от корпуса стальным кольцом.

The clip is made of the same material as the lever, most likely stainless steel, has two curly grooves and an embossed brand name – Esteerbrook. The top in the end is also separated from the body by a steel ring.

Перо: Данная модель, как и подавляющее большинство моделей данного бренда обладает системой сменных перьевых узлов именуемых Re-New-Points. Я не стал разбирать данный перьевой узел представляющий из себя пластиковый стакан с резьбой, стального пера и эбонитового фидера. Фидер в стакане фиксируется специальной деформирующей насечкой после сборки. Данное перо – стальное, жесткое и является самым младшим пером 1ххх сери, без твердосплавной напайки. На перо нанесены имя бренда – Esterbrook, модель пера – 1550 и страна изготовления – Made in U.S.A.

The nib: this model, like the vast majority of models of this brand, has a system of interchangeable nib unit system called Re-New-Points. I did not disassemble this nib unit, which is a plastic collar with thread, stainless steel nib and ebony feed. The feed in collar is fixed with a special deforming notch after assembly. This nib is steel, rigid and the youngest nib of the 1xxx series, without tip. On the nib has brand name – Esterbrook, nibs type – 1550 and country of manufacture – Made in U.S.A.

Общие размеры инструмента: длинна в сложенном состоянии – 121мм, при снятом колпачке – 106мм, при одетом на торец – 147мм. Диаметр корпуса – 10.7мм, а в месте хвата – 9.2мм. Общий вес – 12гр, без колпачка – 7.7гр.

The overall dimensions: folded length – 121mm, without cap – 106mm, when posted – 147mm. The body diameter is 10.7mm, and at the grip – 9.2mm. Total weight – 12g, without cap – 7.7g.

Минутки истории:
Я уже описывал историю данной модели в посте о современном JR Pocket Pen, но немного повторюсь. Данная модель появилась впервые в каталоге 1941 года как часть очень недолговечной серии под названием Visumasters (со смотровым окошком между корпусом и секцией несмотря на рычажную систему заправки). Эти ручки отличались от других ручек Esterbrook по особому рисунку в виде продольного чередования тонких и широких полосок из пластика мраморного узора. Металлическое навершие было подобно более ранней модели “Dollar Pen”. Эти первые ручки поставлялись с новыми уникальными перьями 9xxx серии(топовыми) с твердосплавным окончанием из «осмиридия». Следующая модификация модели выпускалась с 1944 по 1948 года и носит название “J Transitional”. Обладает уже пластиковым навершием колпачка, но корпус имеет по прежнему плоское окончание как у модели “Dollar Pen”, смотрового окошка у данной версии уже не было. К моменту прекращения выпуска на клипе появилась надпись “Esterbrook”, которой до этого не было. Третья и окончательная версия “J Double Jewel” появилась в 1948 году, собственно в этой версии и появились эти черные навершия – двухуровненвые черные камни(double round black jewels). Так же импринт “Esterbrook” был заменен на “Esterbrook ®”. Модель выпускалась в трех размерах: J (full sized – 5″), LJ (slender – 5″), and SJ (demi – 4 3/4″). Одной из интересных особенностей этих ручек серии J являются разные оттенки используемого пластика, однако не обманывайтесь, что это были эксклюзивные или «редкие» варианты – это просто очень массовое производство и невозможность точного дозирования красителей. Так же “Esterbrook” произвел серию ручек размера LJ, которые теперь называют «сосульками» из-за полосатого рисунка пластика с рычагом более позднего варианта (ложка), которые были сделаны на заводе в Мексике.

Minutes of history:
I have already described the history of this model in the review of the modern reborn JR Pocket Pen model, but I will repeat a little. This model first appeared in the 1941 catalog as part of a very short-lived series called the Visumasters (with a viewing window between the body and section despite the lever-filler system). These pens differed from other Esterbrook pens in their special design in the form of stripe patttern body with thin and wide strips of marbled plastic. The metal top was similar to the earlier “Dollar Pen”. These first pens were supplied with the new unique 9xxx series nib units (top end) with a tip from “osmiridium”. The next modification of the model was produced from 1944 to 1948 and is called “J Transitional”. It already has a plastic cap top, but the body still has a flat end like the “Dollar Pen” model and classical marbled colors; this version no had a viewing window. By the time the release was discontinued, on the body had the inscription “Esterbrook”, which had not been there before. The third and final version of the “J Double Jewel” appeared in 1948, and in this version, these black tops appeared – double round black jewels. Also the “Esterbrook” imprint has been changed to “Esterbrook ®”. The model came in three sizes: J (full sized – 5 “), LJ (slender – 5”), and SJ (demi – 4 3/4 “). One of the interesting features of these J series pens is the different shades of plastic used, however do not be fooled that these were exclusive or “rare” options – this is just a very mass production and the impossibility of accurate dosing of dyes. Also “Esterbrook” produced a series of LJ size pens, which are now called “icicles” due to the special striped plastic pattern with a late version of lever( as spoon), which were made in a factory in Mexico.

У данной ручки было немного стертое перо с видимой площадкой и абсолютно не рабочий от времени резиновый мешок. После профилактики и коррекции пера, ручка была проверена тестом.

This pen had a slightly worn nib with a visible pad and sac that was absolutely not working from time. After services and adjusting with some grinding, the pen was tested.

Я не знаю каким было перо изначально, но согласно классификации “Esterbrook” №1550 это Firm Extra Fine Accounting and Bookeeping, т.е. жесткое экстра-тонкое перо для счетоводов и бухгалтеров. Сейчас ширина линии прямой стороной составляет – 0.2мм. Перо абсолютно жесткое которое можно назвать “гвоздь” с нормальной подачей. Обратная сторона пишет только по очень хорошей и гладкой бумаге и дает линию – 0.1мм.

I don’t know what this nib was originally, but according to Esterbrook’s classification #1550 it is Firm Extra Fine for Accounting and Bookeeping. Now the line width by the right side is – 0.2mm. The nib is absolutely rigid and can be called a “nail” but with a normal flow. The reverse side writes only on very good and smooth paper and gives a line of 0.1mm.

В итоге: не смотря на обычный пластик ручка обладает очень красивой и интересной расцветкой. Следы времени видны, но не явно выражены, видимо пластик достаточно твердый, либо ручкой пользовались аккуратно. С одной стороны перо самое простое и без напайки, но с другой стороны именно такое перо может приблизится по своим характеристикам к остроконечному макательному перу, и к слову сказать мое перо пишет весьма гладко для своего размера. К сожалению мне досталась самая маленькая ручка из модельного ряда, для моей руки это не совсем комфортно, в будущем нужно будет обязательно попробовать полноразмерный J.

At the end: despite the usual plastic, this pen has a very beautiful and interesting color. Traces of time are little visible, but not clearly expressed, apparently the plastic is hard enough, or the fountain pen was used carefully. On the one hand, the nib is the simplest and without tip, but on the other hand, just such a nib can approach in its characteristics to a dipping nib, and by the way, my nib writes quite smoothly for its size. Unfortunately, I got the smallest pen (SJ) from the range, it’s not entirely comfortable for my hand, in the future I will definitely have to try the full-size J.

Traditionally, as a second addition – a test sketch – this time Ron Perlman, famous as a Hellboy with the silent phrase “well, now let’s check out what kind of pen this is” :).

He played the roles of Vincent on the CBS series Beauty and the Beast (1987–90), for which he won a Golden Globe Award, Angel de la Guardia in Cronos (1993), the title character in Hellboy (2004) and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Clay Morrow on the FX series Sons of Anarchy (2008–13), Nino in Drive (2011) and Hannibal Chau in Pacific Rim (2013).
Perlman is also known for his voice-work as Clayface in the DC Animated Universe, the narrator of the Fallout series (1997–present), Slade on Teen Titans (2003–06), the Stabbington brothers in Tangled (2010), the Lich on Adventure Time (2011–17) and Xibalba in the film The Book of Life (2014).
