Cross Century II Precious Metals 10KT Gold Filled/Rolled w|18K nib (made in Ireland) 4509-FD

Форма корпусу пряма, циліндрична з конічним закінченням, ідентична моделі Cross Townsend, але в дещо зменшеному варіанті, приблизно як порівняння моделей Standard та Demi/Lady/Junior. Ця модель є одним із старших у своєму модельному ряду. Корпус виконаний також із латуні і покритий 10 каратним золотом, та не звичайним гальванічним покриттям, а методом накатки. Система заправки картриджно-конвертерна, свого пропрієтарного формату Cross, при цьому конвертер типу 8756 з різьбленням. Ковпачок на терті.

The shape of the body is straight, cylindrical with a conical end, identical to the Cross Townsend model, but in a slightly smaller version, similar to the comparison of the Standard and Demi / Lady / Junior models. This model is one of the higher in its lineup. The body is also made of brass and rolled\filled with 10 carat gold, this is not the usual galvanic coating, this is knurling method. The filling system is cartridge-converter by proprietary Cross format, while the converter type 8756 is on thread. Cap on friction.

Unlike the Cross Townsend model, the section sleeve does not have a model serial number, but is coded 608, probably August 1996. But I had a section numbered 509 – which calls into question this format, as the Century II model was launched in 1996.

Цікаво що на даній моделі, на відміну від раніше показаного Townsend`а на ковпачку нанесена інформація про те, що ручка “покрита 10каратним золотом методом накатки, за винятком фурнітури” під ім’ям бренду – CROSS – 10Kt rolled gold except appointment – Ireland –. Але так само добре відомо, що компанія Cross дуже часто не маркувала свої вироби як позолочені, так і зі стерлінговим сріблом, точніше маркувала дуже вибірково та непередбачувано. Пробу позолоти можна визначити лише формою навершия про яку я писав у першому пості чи власне за номером моделі. Ще одна цікава особливість, що ім’я бренду CROSS на кліпі на відміну від Townsend завдано не курсивом, а друкованим шрифтом.

It is interesting that on this model, in contrast to the previously shown Townsend, the cap contains the information about gold – CROSS – 10Kt rolled gold except appointment – Ireland –. But it is also well known that the Cross company very often did not mark its products as gold-rolled\filled\plated or with sterling silver, more precisely, it marked very selectively and unpredictably. The gilding carats can only be determined by the shape of the top, which I wrote about in the first post, or by the actual model number. Another interesting feature is that the name of the brand – CROSS on the clip, unlike Townsend, is a printed font and not cursive.

На перо нанесений візерунок, який особисто мені нагадує про римських легіонерів часів римської імперії, під повітряним отвором розташувалася розмірність пера в колі – F, ім’я бренду – CROSS, 18К, 750 та ювелірне тавро Ste/A/T/C в овалі. Перо з пластиковим фідером розташоване у секції на терті, ключі відсутні.

The nib: not big 18K solid gold nib, size 5 (4.9mm), very smooth and pleasantly soft nib. The nib has a pattern that reminds me personally of Roman legionaries during the Roman Empire. Under the breath hole placed info about dimension of the nib – F in circle, the brand name – CROSS, 18K, 750 and jewelry stamp – Ste/A/T/C  in an oval. The nib and feed in the section mount on friction without keys.

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина у складеному вигляді – 136.6мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 123.6мм. Діаметр корпусу – 9.5мм, у місці хвату – 8.7мм. Повна вага ручки – 22.15гр (з конвертером 25гр), а без ковпачка – 14.4гр (з конвертером – 17.25гр).

Overall dimensions of the tool: folded length – 136.6mm, without cap – 123.6mm. Body diameter – 9.5mm, at the grip – 8.7mm. The total weight of pen is 22.15g (with converter 25g), and without cap it is 14.4g (with converter 17.25g).

Через таке рясне (це вже 4-ий пост поспіль) тестування ручок даного бренду, довелося копнути історії трохи глибше і трохи доповнити або швидше систематизувати раніше викладену інформацію.
Як і писав раніше, компанію The Cross Pen Company було засновано в 1846 Richard Cross та Edward W. Bradbury. Сімейство Cross тільки покинуло Англію, перебравшись до Нового Світу, відкрила свій бізнес з виробництва золотих та срібних тримачів для дерев’яних олівців. У 1973 році, старший син, Alonzo Townsend Cross зареєстрував свій перший патент у США для корпусів та тримачів. Minutes of history:
Due to such a many (this is the 4th post in a row) review of the pens of this brand, I had to dig a little deeper into the stories and supplement or rather systematize the previously information.
As previously I wrote, The Cross Pen Company was founded in 1846 by Richard Cross and Edward W. Bradbury. The Cross family had just left England for the New World and started their own business of producing gold and silver overlays and holders for wooden pencil. In 1973, the eldest son, Alonzo Townsend Cross, filed his first US patent for cases and holders. In the 1880s, Alonzo filed a patent for a “telescopic pencil” that could be easily extended and folded (like a telescope). He also invented the forerunner of modern ballpoint pens called the “stylographic pen”, and the prototype of the modern mechanical pencil which named “crayon holder”. He has registered 26 patents in the US and 7 patents in the UK.
And in 1889, the first Cross fountain pen was released under the name “Peerless”.

“Peerless” дослівно звучить як peer less – не має аналогів. Тільки в 90-х роках, коли пір’яні ручки перейшли з розряду повсякденних інструментів, що пишуть, в розряд статусних аксесуарів ділової людини, компанія знову повернулася до виробництва пір’яних ручок. У 1993 році компанія представила модель Cross Townsend, названу на честь Alonzo Townsend Cross – винахідника та старшого сина засновника компанії. Ручка перейняла всі риси історичної моделі ” Signet ” , але у значно збільшеному розмірі відповідаючи статусу ручки ” Американських президентів ” ( ” Pen of U. S. Presidents ” ). “Peerless” literally sounds like peer less – it has no analogues. I have not found an exact confirmation, but my understanding is that the filling system later became known as the eyedropper. Peerless was highly acclaimed in the United States, at a time when fountain pens were not yet widely used, and became a classic of fountain pen instruments. In 1910, a 12 year old boy came to work at the Cross factory, helping where he could, working after school and delving into the wisdom of production. The boy’s name was Ellery Boss and he subsequently led the development of ballpoint pens. The next Boss which join to Cross was Walter R. Boss, who was so into the process that he bought out the entire company in 1916. From those moment until to September 2013, the Boss family was inextricably linked with Cross.
In 1918 the company introduced a whole series of telescopic and mechanical pencils in the “Alwrite” series, and in 1935 the “Signet” model appeared, which became the predecessor of the famous “Century” model. In 1946, Cross first released the Century Pencil to commemorate the company’s 100th anniversary, and this line became the most popular with a “signature design” image. Only 7 years later, in 1953, the Century Ballpoint Pen was released, which became an icon of American ballpoint pens, which was influenced in part by the “Lifetime Mechanical Warranty” on all writing instruments, introduced in 1949, as and the quality of these instruments. This model is produced practically unchanged to this day. Over the past 70 years, about 100 million units of the Century series have been sold, and are said to be the most popular writing instruments chosen as gifts around the world.
Interestingly, from the 1930s to the 1980s, the company practically ignored the produce of fountain pens. It was only in the 90s, when fountain pens moved from the category of everyday writing tools to the category of the status accessories of a businessman, that the company returned to the production of fountain pens. In 1993, the company introduced the Cross Townsend model, named after Alonzo Townsend Cross, the inventor and eldest son of the company’s founder. The pen has adopted all the features of the historical “Signet” model, but in a significantly increased size corresponding to the status of the pen of “American Presidents” (“Pen of U. S. Presidents”). And in 1996, as the next successor to the tradition, the Cross Century II model was released, which slightly increased in diameter compared to the firstly original “Century”, because the latter, in turn, was the size of a traditional classic wooden pencil. And in 2014, the higher model “Peerless 125” appeared now, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the release of the company’s first fountain pen – the “Peerless” model.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить – 0.4мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0.7мм. Зворотний бік пише тонко із шириною лінії – 0.2мм. Подача стабільна, рівна та помірна.

The width of an ordinary line by the right side is – 0.4mm, pressure allows to increase this line to 0.7mm. The reverse side writes thin with a line width of 0.2mm. The flow is stable, even and moderate.

У підсумку: спочатку про плюси – зовсім несподівано мені ця невелика ручка виявилася дуже зручною та комфортною, і я не відчув незручності як з іншими тонкими ручками. Не знаю чи це через рифлений грип, чи це через металевий корпус, але моя рука не помічає що це тонка ручка. Другий і ще суттєвіший плюс це м’яке перо – ні, це звичайно не флекс, але воно реально м’яке і це приносить певне задоволення при письмі. Третій плюс – це, звичайно, конвертер на різьбленні – це і зручно, і надійно, і ефективно. Четвертий плюс, суто суб’єктивний, це зовнішня простота і в той же час краса форми. Тепер про мінуси: попри те, що перо м’яке і гладке, і ручка записала відразу після заправки дуже приємно, через деякий час я помітив, що на гладкому папері відбуваються неприємні хардстарти. У малюнку коли у вас багато швидких і коротких рухів, після яких лінія залишається через раз це дуже дратує. Фактично у мене пішов весь день щоб позбавитися цього ефекту (бебіботома). Я щоразу промивав, потім підшліфовував, встановлював конвертер і перевіряв, пробуючи та пробуючи знову і знову, повторюючи процедуру, бо не хотів знімати зайвий матеріал. За цей час я намалював 3 ескізи та виписав 2 повні конвертери. Але зараз я задоволений, бо ручка тепер пише просто чудово. Цікаво що в інтернеті набагато більше позитивних відгуків, хоча іноді трапляються і негативні про пір’я “з коробки”, при цьому після звернення або в сервіс, або до нібмайстра, всі власники дуже задоволені своїми ручками і більшість вважають їх ідеалами не бажаючи розлучатися з ними. Також відгуки користувачів діляться і про характеристики пер: одні пишуть про жорсткі пір’я, як цвяхи, а інші що пір’я м’які саме на моделях “Century II”. Я не люблю тверде перо і мені прям невимовно пощастило, тому що мій екземпляр має саме м’яке перо, проте я не знаю чийого виробництва це перо(хоча вірогідно Mutschler). Фідер трохи схожий на фідер від сучасних Kaweco Liliput, але їм пір’я постачає Bock, а я не зустрічав інформації, щоб Cross замовляв пір’я у Bock. Що ж до мого досвіду з Cross, то я плануватиму спробувати ще найстаршу модель “Peerless 125” з Сейлорівським пером бо ручки мені все-таки сподобалися:).

At the end: first, about the pros – quite unexpectedly for me this small pen turned out to be very convenient and comfortable and I did not feel the inconvenience like with other thin fountain pens. I don’t know if this is due to the grooved grip, or if it is due to the metal body, but my hand does not feel that this is a thin pen. The second and even more significant plus is this soft nib – no, it is certainly not a flex, but it is really soft and it gives a certain pleasure when writing. The third plus is, of course, a threaded converter – it is convenient, reliable and efficient. The fourth plus, purely subjective, is the exterior simplicity and at the same time the beauty of the shape. Now about the cons: despite the fact that the nib is soft and smooth, and this nib wrote very nicely right after filling “out of the box”, I noticed that unpleasant hardstarts occur on smooth paper. In drawing, when you have a lot of quick and short strokes, after which the line remains every other time, it is terribly annoying. In fact, it took me all day to get rid of this effect (babybottom). Every time I washed, then grinded, installed the converter and checked, trying and trying again and again, repeating the procedure because I did not want to cut more material. During this time, I drew 3 sketches and full filled 2 converters. But now I’m happy, because the pen and nib now writes just fine. It is interesting that there are much more positive reviews on the Internet, although sometimes there are negative ones about the pen/nib “out of the box”, while after contacting either the service or nibmeister, all the owners are very happy with their pens and most consider them to be ideals, not wanting to part with them. Also, user reviews are shared about the different characteristics of nibs: some write about hard/rigid nibs, like nails, while others say that the nibs are soft on the “Century II” models. I do not like hard nibs and I was really incredibly lucky, because my copy has exactly a soft nib, but I do not know whose production this nib is. The feed is a bit like a feed from modern Kaweco Liliput(Bock made nibs) but I have not seen any information that Cross ordered nibs from the Bock. As for my experience with the Cross – I plan to try the higher top-model “Peerless 125” with a Sailor nib, because I liked these pens :).

As a first addon, a photo of a retail set: an outer cardboard box, a plastic box with a leather-like texture with a locking button, a green velvet insert, a warranty card in different languages and 2 original blue ink cartridges. The elements of decoration are made in traditional Irish and very beautiful green tones.

Напевно логічно порівняти візуально Cross Century II з Cross Townsend, оскільки обидва мають схожий дизайн та я би сказав що це проміжна модель (за габаритами) між тонкою Cross Century та великою Cross Townsend.

It would probably be logical to visually compare Cross Century II with Cross Townsend, since both have a similar design and I would say that this is an intermediate model (in size) between the thin Cross Century and large Cross Townsend.

Billy Kidd was born in 1980 in Panama City, Florida. He traveled the country many times before settling in Arizona where he grew up. Update 25.06.2021:

Несподівано і випадково перевірив герметичність ковпачка цієї пір’яної ручки. Після 2-х місяців лежання – миттєвий старт, при цьому як залишалося 1/3 картриджа з чорнилом після тесту, так вони і залишилися. Вважаю це дуже добрим результатом.

Unexpectedly and quite by accident, I checked the drying of this fountain pen. After 2 months not use – an instant start, while 1/3 of the fill converter when remained after the test, so they remained to this day. I think this is a very good result.

Jeffrey Leon Bridges is an American actor, singer, and producer.
