(modern) Kaweco Liliput Silver

Привіт всім читачам та практикам. Сьогодні у мене дві прем’єри. По-перше, це мій перший огляд цього німецького бренду, а по-друге — це, мабуть, одна з найменших сучасних серійних моделей.

Hello to all readers and pen lovers. Today I have the 2nd premiere. Firstly, this is my first review of this brand, and secondly, this is probably one of the smallest, modern, serial models of fountain pens.

Kaweco Liliput Silver (made in Germany) 10000453

Форма цієї ручки циліндрична з округлими закінченнями і, швидше за все, нагадує подовжену пігулку (або маленьку сосиску :)), а в діаметрі не товща за мізинець мого молодшого сина :). Незважаючи на назву Silver, ця ручка виготовлена з шліфованого алюмінію і складається з мінімальної кількості елементів: перовий вузол у пластиковій оправі; секція; корпус; ковпачок. Система заправки картриджно-конвертерна стандарту інтернешнл (international). Ковпачок, до речі, на різьблені, різьбленя однозаходове, закриття/відкритя за 3 і 3/4 оберти.

The shape of this pen is cylindrical with rounded ends and most likely looks like an elongated pill (or mini sausage :)), and its diameter is no thicker than my youngest son’s little finger :). Despite the name Silver, this pen is made of brushed aluminum and construct of the minimum elements: nib unit in collar, section, body and cap. Filling system is cartridge/converter by international format. The cap, by the way, on thread, the thread is single-start, closing/opening in 3 and 3/4 turns.

Через невеликий розмір ручки при знятому ковпачку, на торці корпусу є різьба, на яку можна накрутити ковпачок, щоб збільшити загальні розміри ручки до прийнятних для використання. Без ковпачка ручка, швидше за все, нагадує залишок (огризок) від креслярського чи художнього олівця :). А самі елементи настільки легкі й невагомі, що нагадують просто скручену в трубку фольгу від шоколаду (пам’ятаю, в дитинстві ми такі накручували на гладкі ручки, щоб розрівняти для подальшого використання :)).

Due to the small size of the pen when the cap is removed, there is a thread on the end of body that can be screwed onto the cap to increase the overall length pen to be acceptable for use. Without a cap, the pen most likely resembles the remainder (stub) of drawing/art pencil :). And the elements themselves are so weightless that they just resemble a chocolate foil rolled into a tube (I remember in my childhood we twisted these on smooth ballpoint to smooth it out for later use :)).

З елементів брендування на ковпачку присутній напис фарбою Kaweco Liliput Germany, а на торці корпусу та на зворотному боці фідера нанесений логотип компанії KA WE CO в колі.

Of the branding elements, the cap has a Kaweco Liliput Germany paint inscription, and the KA WE CO logo in a circle is applied on the end of body and on the back side of the feed.

Перо: маленьке (#2), але не найменших розмірів, сталеве, лише трохи пружне, але під час письма відчувається як жорстке. Перевий вузол відповідає розміру Bock 060 і підходить до моделей: Kaweco Sport, Kaweco Liliput, Kaweco Special, Kaweco Elegance, Kaweco Dia2, Kaweco Student, Kaweco Fantasie, причому для моделей AL-Sport та Liliput він зібраний як окремий вузол, а для інших моделей перо вилучається і монтується з рідним фідером у секцію на терті. На перо нанесено орнаментальний (флористика?) візерунок, трохи нижче напис Germany (ліворуч) та Since 1883 (рік заснування компанії праворуч), нижче вже знайомий логотип компанії KA WE CO, під яким розташоване EF — розмір пера. У хвостовій частині, праворуч, стоїть номер 1 (я не знайшов, що це означає).

The nib: small (# 2), but not the smallest, stainless steel, only slightly springly, but feels hard when writing. The company’s nib unit is numbered 060 and fits the following models: Kaweco Sport, Kaweco Liliput, Kaweco Special, Kaweco Elegance, Kaweco Dia2, Kaweco Student, Kaweco Fantasie, while for AL-Sport and Liliput models as a completed nib units, and for other models the nib is removed from NU and mounted with original feed in the section on friction. The nib has an ornamental (floristic?) pattern, below Germany (on left side) and Since 1883 (the date of the company’s foundation on the right side), below the whell known KA WE CO logo and under which is EF – the dimension of the tip. In the tail section on the right side of the nib there have number 1 (I did not find what this means).

Загальні розміри: довжина у складеному стані – 97 мм, без ковпачка – 87 мм, з ковпачком, накрученим на торець – 125 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 9,3 мм, а в місці хвату – 7,7 мм. Повна вага незаправленої ручки – 8,4 г, а без ковпачка – 5,6 г.

Overall dimensions: folded length – 9.7mm, without cap – 8.7mm, posted – 12.5mm. The body diameter is 9.3mm, and at the grip – 7.7mm. The total weight (w/o cartridge or converter) of empty pen is 8.4g, and without cap is 5.6g.

Оскільки це перший пост про ручки цього бренду, варто зазначити, що Kaweco — це німецький бренд письмових приладів, який спочатку називався Heidelberg Pen Company і займався випуском макальних пер та тримачів для них. У наш час, у 1994 році, косметична компанія Gutberlet GmbH з Нюрнберга придбала права на бренд Kaweco та відродила виробництво письмових приладів. Сучасні продукти під брендом Kaweco включають у свою лінійку перові ручки, ролери, цифрові ручки та механічні олівці.

Since this is my first post about the pens of this brand, it makes sense to say that Kaweco is a German brand of writing tools, originally referred to as the Heidelberg Pen Company, which was engaged in the production of dip nib pens and holders. Nowadays, in 1994, the cosmetic company Gutberlet GmbH from Nuremberg acquired the rights to the Kaweco brand and rebirth this brand of writing tools. Current products under the Kaweco brand include fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoint, digital pens and mechanical pencils.

Minutes of history:
Kaweco began in 1883 as the Heidelberger Federhalter Fabrik (Heidelberg Fountain Pen Factory), founded by the gentlemen Luce and Enßlen of Heidelberg. They were engaged in the production of wooden holders and dip steel nibs for them. In 1889, salesmen Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber bought the factory and renamed it “Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik Koch, Weber & Compagnie” (later KaWeCo at the first letters). In 1903, the company had 25 workers producing black ebonite safety pens (BCHR – BlaCk Hard Rubber) with the names Perkeo, Omega and Kaweco with HF imprint – Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik (fountain pen factory in Heidelberg). The company purchased nibs for these pens in the USA from A. Morton & Co (New York). The company registered its first patent for a fountain pen in 1909 under the number 224101 D.R.G.M. The popularity of the brand grew very quickly and in 1913 the company had offices in Europe (Berlin, Paris, Zurich, Vienna), South America and Russia. In the same year, the company presented probably its most famous model – the Kaweco-Sport – a very compact hard rubber fountain pen originally intended for officers and sportsmen.
Due to the growing demand and popularity, in 1914 the management decided to buy the equipment and the rights to the production of nibs from the oldest company in New York and its partner – A. Morton & Co. and move all producing machines to Heidelberg. Along with the producing machines, American nibmakers are coming to Germany to train local staff – the first Germany nibmakers Hermann Böhler (later together with his brother Georg founded the Osmia company) and Peter Rupp (later also founded his company Georg Peter Rupp with the imprint “lion’s head”). From that moment on, the company performs the full production cycle from the bodies to the nibs themselves. In 1921 Kaweco was reorganized into a limited company. Kaweco had an annual production of 130,000 fountain pens and had 600 employees, which will increase to 1,200 by 1925. It is not known for certain what happened later and why the company began to suffer losses (the global crisis began later), but this was probably due to the fact that a number of leading engineers left the company and started their own business. In 1929 the company was declared bankrupt as the result of which another company, Badische Federhalterfabrik Knust, Grube & Woringen (KWG), acquired part of the equipment with patents and rights to the KAWECO brand, later reorganize to Kaweco Badische Füllhalterfabrik, Worringen & Grube. Friedrich Grube owner and main manager takes over at the helm of Kaweco for the next 30 years. It was
in 1930 the new KA WE CO logo was developed, divided into three parts, which we know to this day.

У 1994 році косметична компанія Gutberlet GmbH з Нюрнберга викуповує права на назву та торгову марку Kaweco та перезапускає виробництво з новою моделлю Sport, натхненною дизайном 1935 року. Асортимент включає: пір’яні ручки, ролери, кулькові ручки, механічні та цангові олівці. Як партнера було обрано не менш відому компанію Diplomat. Однак у 1999 році Diplomat була придбана іншою німецькою компанією Herlitz, що призвело до припинення партнерства. During World War II, a shortage of raw materials and manpower almost led to a complete halt in production, but nevertheless, on October 30, 1945, a few months after the end of the WWII, Kaweco was able to resume production. On May 5, 1960, Friedrich Grube (Sr.) died at the age of 63 and the company was headed by his son Wilhelm. Under his leadership, the design of the assortment was modernized and made thinner and more streamlined according to thrend of this time, but this did not allow the company to survive with the onset of the “ballpoint era” and in 1970 the company was forced to stop production. The members of the Grube family manage to keep the brand, machine tools and patents in their possession, and together with a few employees, they resume production in 1971 with announce a new Sport model with special Olympic coin to the XX Olympic Games in Munich(1972). The latest model of Sport was a cartridge filling system, is supplied for advertising purposes at the Deutsche Bundespost, but in 1981 Kaweco finally ceased operations.

In 1994, the cosmetics company Gutberlet GmbH from Nuremberg buys out the rights to the Kaweco name and trademark and relaunches production with a new Sport model inspired by the 1935 design. The assortment includes: fountain pens, rollers, ballpoint pens, mechanical and clutch pencils. The well-known company Diplomat was chosen as a partner. However, in 1999, Diplomat was acquired by another German company, Herlitz, which resulted in the termination of the partnership. Since that time, Kaweco has independently developed its business, representing it in more than 50 countries.

ps: A. Morton & Co. is a company for the production of gold pens and gold/silver pencils with cases founded in 1848, and registered at 25 Maiden Lane, New York since 1859. Founder – Alexander Morton. From 1890, the company was managed by James Morton, who after his death in 1910 left everything to his wife Victorine C. Morton, who sold the production rights to KaWeCo in 1913-15, and completely liquidated the brand around 1920.

Роблячи огляд місяць тому, я дозволив собі сумніватися в твердженні компанії про те, що «ця модель заснована на історичній і була вперше представлена в 1910 році», оскільки я не знайшов жодного згадування і фотографії подібної моделі. Однак, завдяки відповідальним співробітникам компанії KaWeCo та їх архівам, я представляю вам ці дві історичні моделі, на основі яких створено сучасний Liliput. Більш того, ці моделі також носили таку ж назву. Ці ручки випускалися з 1911 по 1929 рік і представляли собою найпростіші системи «наливайок». Модель №685 в складеному вигляді мала довжину 9 см, а з надягнутим на торець ковпачком — 14 см. Модель №690К в складеному вигляді була 8 см, а з надягнутим на торець ковпачком — 10.5 см.

While reviewing a month ago, I allowed myself to doubt the company’s phrase that “this model is based on a historical and was first introduced in 1910”, because I did not find any mention or photos of such a model. However, thanks to the responsible employees of KaWeCo and their archives, I present to you these 2 historical models which based to modern Liliput was created, moreover, these models had the same name. These pens were produced from 1911 to 1929 and represented the simplest “eyedropper” system. Model no. 685 had folded length of 9 cm, and posted – 14 cm, model no. 690K – folded was 8 cm, and posted – 10.5 cm.

Власник цієї ручки звернувся з проханням усунути нестабільну подачу пера (ручка нова). Після обслуговування ручка була протестована.

The owner of this pen made a request to fix the unstable ink flow and line under nib ( this is a new pen). The pen was tested after service.

На фотографії нижче (зліва) видно нестабільну подачу на ручці, незважаючи на те що вона була заправлена текучими чорнилами Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts, особливо з огляду на вже наступившу літню спеку. Справа – тест вже налаштованого пера з використанням вінтажних чорнил JIF Waterman’s Luminouse Bleu. Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною складає – 0.3 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє трохи збільшити подачу, і лінія стає 0.5 мм. Зворотна сторона дає таку ж лінію 0.3 мм, але більш прозору через меншу подачу, при цьому на швидкому штриху вона стає – 0.15 мм. Спочатку зворотна сторона трохи дряпала, але тепер пише так само гладко, як і пряма сторона.

The photo below (at left) shows an unstable line from the nib despite fills by Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts flowing ink, especially given the already summer heat. On the right is a test of adjusted nib using JIF Waterman’s Luminouse Bleu vintage ink. The width of the ordinary line by the right side is – 0.3mm, while the pressure allows to slightly increase the flow and the line becomes 0.5mm. The reverse side gives the same line as a right – 0.3 mm, but more transparent due to less flow supply, while on a fast stroke it becomes – 0.15 mm. Initially, the reverse side a little scratch, but now writes smoothly as the right side.

В підсумку: Я б сказав, що це трохи смішна ручка. Я не знаю, кому може знадобитися така мініатюрна ручка розміром з сигарету, але писати нею без ковпачка зовсім незручно. До речі, я не завжди попадаю з першого разу, щоб накрутити кришку на зворотну сторону, ймовірно, через заокруглений край. В описі до ручки на багатьох сайтах зазначено, що вона використовує лише картриджі, але в асортименті Kaweco є як короткий конвертер, так і спеціальний піпетковий (squeeze). Загалом, я сприймаю цю ручку більше як “антистресовий аксесуар”, який весело вертіти у руках, ніж як повноцінний письмовий інструмент, але можливо, вона підійде саме вам:).

At the end: I would say that this is a little funny pen. I don’t know why anyone needs such a miniature pen the size of a cigarette, but it’s impossible to write comfortably without a posted cap. By the way, I don’t always get it the first time to screw the cap on the back side, probably because of the smoothed ending. In the descriptions of this model on many sites it is indicated that it uses only cartridges, but the Kaweco make both short converter and special squeeze converter. In general, I perceive this pen more as an “anti-stress accessory”, which is fun to twirl in hands, rather than a real writing tool, but may be you is likes more:).

В якості першого доповнення, хочу показати задирки у щілині, які залишилися після пропилу і які заважали нормальній подачі чорнил, так само як і надмірна стисливість пера.

As a first addon, I want to show the burrs into slot left after the cut, which interfered with the normal flow of ink, as well as the excessive pinching of the tines.

Приклади того, як перо писало до налаштування (Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts) і після (JIF Waterman’s Luminouse Bleu). Нагадую, що Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts — це досить рідке чорнило, що добре видно в місцях скупчення чорнил, на нижніх поворотах у буквах.

Examples of how the nib wrote before tuning (Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts) and after (JIF Waterman’s Luminouse Bleu). Let me remind you that Noodler’s 54th Massachusetts is a fairly liquid ink, which is well visible in places where ink accumulates, at the lower corners of the letters.
