(ground to UEF modern) Conklin All American Omniflex (new)

У меня уже были в обзорах несколько моделей этого возрожденного бренда, но сейчас я хочу познакомить вас, как я понимаю, cо второй по старшинству моделей из современного ряда.

I have already reviewed several models of this reborn brand, but now I want to introduce, as I understand it, to the second after prime model in modern range.

Conklin All American Southwest Turquoise w| Omniflex nib (made in USA) CK71696

Форма данного инструмента крупная, сигарообразная, с полностью скругленными окончаниями. Ручка изготовлена из полупрозрачного акрила нескольких цветов (голубой, коричневый, песочный) под названием “Бирюза юго-запада” и по всей видимости лейтмотивом послужила солнечная калифорния с ее побережьями, пляжами и океаном. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерная, формата интернешенел(international). Колпачок на резьбе, открытие за 2 оборота.

The shape of this tool is large, cigar-shaped, with completely rounded ends. The pen is made of translucent acrylic of mixed several colors (turquoise, brown, sand) named “Southwest Turquoise” and, most likely, the leitmotif was sunny California with its coasts, beaches and ocean. Filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on thread, 2 turns to open/close.

Конструкция максимально проста и от этого надежна. В комплекте поставки идет конвертер с резьбой что повышает надежность соединения и исключает случайное отсоединение во время случайной тряски. Стенки корпуса очень массивные и составляют примерно 3-4мм.

The design is as simple as possible and therefore reliable. The retail set includes converter with thread that increases the reliability of the connection and excludes accidental disconnection during accidental shaking. The walls of the body are very massive and are approximately 3-4mm.

На корпус нанесена гравировка trade Conklin mark, Toledo, Ohio, USA как на винтажных моделях и название модели All American. Так=же колпакчок обладает фирменным и узнаваемым клипом с брендированием Conklin, который вам уже знаком по ранее описанным, старшим моделям – Conklin Mark Twain Crescent.

The body is engraved: trade Conklin mark, Toledo, Ohio, USA as on vintage models and the model name All American. Also, the cap has a branded by recognizable clip form with Conklin branding, which you are already familiar with from the earlier described high models – Conklin Mark Twain Crescent.

Перьевой узел, как и в других современных моделях стандарта JoWo, поэтому перьевые узлы легко заменяемы что добавляет удобства со стороны пользователей. Вы можете пользоваться любимой моделью перьевой ручки и только менять перья по своему усмотрению, при чем это можно сделать дома без дополнительных навыков. Так-же стакан имеет специальные ключи для правильного позиционирования как пера, так и фидера, поэтому неправильно собрать перьевой узел при желании очень трудно:)

The nib unit, as in other modern models of the JoWo format, is therefore easily replaceable, which adds convenience to the user. You can use your favorite fountain pen model and only change the nibs as you like, and this can be done at home without additional skills. Also, in collar has special keys for the correct positioning of both nib and feed, so it is very difficult to assemble nib unit is wrong:)

Перо: собственно вот и подошли к самому главному, а именно перу нового образца Omniflex от JoWo. Перо крупного 6го размера, изготовлено из нержавеющий стали, по бокам имеет специальные вырезы для увеличения своих гибких(эластичных) свойств. Однако, забегая вперед, хочу сказать что термин Flex в данном случае больше условность, чем факт, я бы скорее назвал это перо Soft, хотя даже по мягкости оно уступает тому же Pelikan M1000 или Montegrappa Miya. На перо нанесен флористический орнамент огибающий вырезы и под воздушным отверстием расположилась надпись Omniflex, информация о бренде и размерности отсутствует.

The nib: actually, we have come to the most important thing, namely the Omniflex nib in new design. Large size 6 nib, made of stainless steel, has special cutouts on the shoulders for increase its flexible (elastic) properties. However, running ahead, I want to say that term Flex in this case is more convention than fact, I would rather call this nib is Soft, although even in terms of softness it is inferior to the ordinary Pelikan M1000 or Montegrappa Miya. The nib has a floral ornament enveloping the cutouts and the Omniflex vertical inscription is located under breather hole, there is no information about the brand and dimensions.

Общие размеры инструмента: длина в сложенном виде – 143.5мм, со снятым колпачком – 127мм. Диаметр корпуса – 15.3мм, в месте хвата – 11.5мм. Общий вес инструмента(без картриджа и конвертера) – 29.15г и со снятым колпачком – 16г.

Overall dimensions of tool: folded length – 143.5mm, without cap – 127mm. Body diameter – 15.3mm, at the grip – 11.5mm. The total weight (without cartridge and converter) is 29.15 g and without cap – 16 g.

Подробно историю компании я описывал в обзоре Conklin Mark Twain Crescent Filler, поэтому не буду повторятся. Те кто желают ознакомится с ней могут это сделать по ссылке выше. Что же касается именно All American, то о ней известно не много. Впервые эта модель появилась в каталоге Conklin в 1930году, во время мирового экономического кризиса названного в США “Великой депрессией”. Модель была рассчитана на широкую аудиторию с доступной ценой. Изначально выпускалась в форме на основе Conklin Endura с плоскими окончаниями, но достаточно быстро, под влиянием мейнстрима в лице Sheaffer Balance дизайн был изменен на обтекаемые формы Nozac Symetric. All Fmerican производилась в разных размерах и разных расцветках, зачастую очень ярких так как в качестве материала использовался целлулоид. Комплектовалась самой популярной и простой (на тот момент) рычажной системой заправки.

Minutes of history:
I described the history of this brand in detail in the Conklin Mark Twain Crescent Filler review, so I will not repeat. Those who wish to familiarize themselves with it can do so at the link above. As for All American, not much is known about it. This model first appeared in Conklin sale catalog in 1930, during the global economic crisis, called the “Great Depression” in the US. The model was designed for a wide audience with an affordable price. Initially produced on a Conklin Endura-based shape with flat tops, but rather quickly, under the influence of the mainstream design(Sheaffer Balance) was changed to the streamlined shape of the Nozac Symetric. All American was produced in a variety of sizes and colors, often very bright as celluloid was used as the material. It was used with the most popular and simplest (at that time) lever-filling system.

Размерность у пера Omniflex отсутствует как и у перьев Falcon (FA), поэтому выясним это в реальной работе.

The Omniflex nib is absent dimension like the Falcon (FA) nib, so let’s test it in real work.

Ширина линии прямой стороной составляет – 0.5мм, при этом нажим позволяет увеличить линию до скромных 0.8мм. Обратная сторона дает линию в 0.4мм, но “из коробки” она царапала, так что я еще до теста ее заполировал. Подача чуть больше нормы, линия влажная, но комфортная.

The line width by the right side is – 0.5mm, while the pressure allows to increase the line to modest 0.8mm. The reverse side gives line of 0.4mm, but it scratched “out from the box”, so I polished it before the test. The flow is a little over the norm, the line is wet, but comfortable.

В итоге: Увы, перо меня разочаровало в очередной раз. В прошлые разы я был разочарован Omniflex старого образца, в этот раз есть претензии и к новому дизайну. У меня создалось впечатление что это обычное, ординарное перо JoWo, в котором сделали вырезы и назвали его Omniflex, потому что оно определенно жестче даже старого варианта. Возможно этой гибкости было бы достаточно для Спенсериан (как в варианте Pilot Elabo/Falcon) если бы размерность пера была EF или UEF, но разница между M(0.5мм) и B(0.8мм) настолько незначительна, что вариативность линии на воспринимается. Еще в процессе рисования у меня часто случались хардстарты, которые меня начали раздражать к концу эскиза. Вообщем определенно я буду работать над этим пером, но пока не решил в каком направлении. В остальном мне очень понравилась эргономика самой ручки – она толстенькая (как упитанная сосиска:)), крупная, при этом корпус выглядит (и ощущается) как прочный и целостный, все детали сделаны аккуратно. Я не люблю полупрозрачные корпуса, но это смотрится приятно, даже стальная втулка в полупрозрачном пластике иногда выглядит как золотые вкрапления. Возможно голубой с коричневым не совсем обычное сочетание, но в данном случае оно выглядит органично и мне нравится. И еще определенно стоит отметить что это не дорогая перьевая ручка.

At the end: Alas, this nib disappointed me once again. Last time I was disappointed with the old-style Omniflex, this time there are complaints about the new design. I got the impression that this is a regular JoWo nib that has been cut out and named Omniflex because it is definitely hardest than even the old version. Perhaps this flexibility would be enough for Spencerian (as in the Pilot Elabo/Falcon models) if this nib was EF or UEF size, but the difference between M (0.5mm) and B (0.8mm) is so insignificant that line variation is not perceived. Even in the process of drawing, I often had hard starts, which began to annoy me towards the end of the sketch. In general, I will definitely work with this nib, but have not yet decided in which direction. Otherwise, I really liked the ergonomics and owerall design of this pen – it is plump (like a well-fed sausage :)), large, while the body looks (and feels) like solid and well done, all details are neatly done. Usualy I don’t like translucent body, but it looks nice, even a steel bushing into translucent plastic sometimes looks like gold blotches. Perhaps blue and brown are not quite the usual combination, but in this case it looks organic and I like it. And it’s definitely worth noting that this is not an expensive fountain pen.

Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal is an American actor. ps: в конце хочу отдельно отметить чернила Private Reserve American Blue и собственно саму компанию Private Reserve, за предоставленную возможно протестировать некоторые из их огромной палитры чернил. Мне очень нравится это цвет который имеет очень красивую растяжку от нежно голубого до темно-синего или даже ультрамаринового.

ps: at the end, I would like to separately mention the Private Reserve American Blue ink and the Private Reserve company itself, which is provided me for test some inks from their huge palette. I really like this color, which has a very beautiful shade from subtle cyan to dark blue or even ultramarine.

Update 25.11.2021:

Как я и обещал, возвращаюсь к этому перу:) Изначально я решил сделать мое специальное перо “drawing nib” – я его так назвал, когда нормальной стороной перо пишет максимально тонко, а обратной наоборот максимально толсто из общих размеров кончика. Мне не очень понравился результат потому что плотное сведение верха и сухая подача делала письмо широкой площадкой некомфортным даже при гладкости поверхности. Поэтому я решил его просто переточить ультра тонкое.

As I promised, I’m back to this pen 🙂 Initially, I decided to make my special grind “drawing nib” – I called it that when the normal side of the pen writes as thin as possible, and reverse side writes is as thick as possible of total tip size. I didn’t really like the result because the tight convergence and dry flow made writing by wide area of reverse side uncomfortable even with a smooth surface. So I decided to just regrind it to ultra extra fine.

К сожалению мне не хватило чернил для полного тестирования(у меня был всего один картридж), но хорошо что чернил хватило на основной элемент:) – главное не терять голову:)

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough ink for full sketch (I had only one cartridge), but it’s good that there was enough ink for the main element 🙂 – the main thing is not to lose head 🙂

Ширина линии прямой стороной теперь составляет – 0.15-0.2мм, при этом нажим позволяет увеличить линию до скромных 0.5мм. Обратная сторона дает линию в 0.15-0.2мм, но более прозрачную. Сейчас это перо пишет безо всяких проблем и хардстартов, тонко и гладко.

The line width by the right side is – 0.15-0.2mm now, while the pressure allows to increase the line to modest 0.5mm. The reverse side gives line of 0.15-0.2mm, but more transparency. Now this nib writes thinny, without gaps and problems. I will test this nib with other inks later.
