Hello to all! Today I want to do a short post about the paper which I use for my fountain pen tests and draft sketches. Of course, Tamoe River or Clairefontein are much better for these purposes, but buying a pack of 500 sheets of such paper becomes inexpensive but good for draft sketches and notes.

Привіт всім! Сьогодні хочу зробити невеликий пост про папір, який я використовую для своїх тестів пір’яних ручок і чорнових замальовок. Звичайно Тамоє Рівер або Клерфонтейн набагато краще для цих цілей, але купуючи пачку в 500 аркушів такий папір стає відносно недорогим, проте добрим для замальовок та записів.

I have been using this paper for 3 or 4 years and in the ink fade test 2020 I already gave a description of it, but now my purchased batch is coming to an end and I decided to buy proven brand again. During this time, the cost of paper has grown 2.5 (!!!) times, but nevertheless, I consider it one of the best among inexpensive ones for fountain pens. Before “discovering” this paper, I used Xerox Colotech + and Datacopy. Datacopy was very good, but when one pack ran out quickly, and when I bought a new one of the same type it turned out to be just disgusting, after this disappointment I started looking for a new paper and found this Double A Premium model. First, I will give a description that I published last year, and below I will give a small comparison with a new batch purchased 2 weeks ago.

Цей папір я використовую вже 3 або 4 роки і в тесті чорнила на вицвітання я вже наводив його опис, але зараз моя минула партія добігає кінця і я вирішив ще раз купити перевірений бренд. За цей час вартість паперу зросла в 2.5 (!!!) рази, але я її вважаю однією з найкращих серед недорогих саме для пір’яних ручок. Перед тим як “відкрити для себе” цей папір, я користувався Xerox Colotech+ та Datacopy. Datacopy була дуже гарною, але одна пачка швидко закінчилася, а коли я купив нову того ж типу вона виявилася просто огидною, після цього розчарування я і почав шукати новий папір і знайшов Double A Premium. Спочатку я наведу опис, який я публікував минулого року, а нижче я наведу невелике порівняння з новою партією купленої 2 тижні тому.

Спочатку я клюнув на неї через виробництво Франції, але копнувши глибше з’ясувалося що це Таїланд. На американських сайтах зустрічав інформацію, що папір класу А+ і безкислотний. Також з’ясував що папір на основі евкаліптових дерев, які на відміну від звичайних (13 млн волокон на 1гр) мають 25млн волокон на 1гр. Швидше за все це все рекламні трюки, щоб вигідніше продати, але папір мені сподобався.

Initially, I decided to buy this one due to the production of France, but after reading the specification (after purchase:)) I found out that the production is Thailand. On US sites I found information that paper is class A + and acid-free. I also learned that paper based on eucalyptus trees which, unlike ordinary ones (13 million fibers per gram) have 25 million fibers per gram. Most likely these are all advertising slogans in order to sell better, but nevertheless I like paper in terms of price/quality ratio.

У мене варіант Преміум, але на Амазоні бачив ще версію Everyday, мабуть, вона простіше.

I have a Premium version, but on Amazon I saw another version of Everyday, apparently more cheaper.

Актуально можу порівняти лише з останніми аркушами Data Copy Everyday (невдалою партією) та Xerox Colotech+. За щільністю така ж як Датакопі, на просвіт волокна схожі (неозброєним оком:)), по тону трохи тепліше, ближче до натурального білого, не така “синюшна” як Датакопі та Ксерокс, але в порівнянні з білою акварельною холодний блакитний тон є.

Actually, I can compare only with the last sheets (modern bad, unlucky batch) of Datacopy Everyday and discontinued Xerox Colotech +. The density is the same as the Datacopy, similar to the fiber’s lumen (visualy), the tone is slightly warmer, closer to the natural white, not as “cyanotic” as the Datacopy and Xerox, but there is a little cold tone in comparison with watercolor white paper.

Та й власне перевірка в дії:). На відміну від сучасної невдалої Датакопі – туш тримає чудово, як і більшість нормальних чорнил – це ви можете побачити за моїми тестовими ескізами для авторучок. Лінія тонка, не розпливається, на зворотний бік при помірній подачі нічого не протікає, гарну туш тримає навіть при гострому напівгнучкому пері. Прозорість звичайно паперу є, тобто. вона трохи просвічується в порівнянні з тієї ж Ксерокс 120гр, але в порівнянні з іншими офісними паперами з 80гр мені здається цілком звичайна та не викликає додаткових питань.

Tests that I do with paper after purchase. Unlike the modern unsuccessful Datacopy, india inks works just fine, like most normally inks. This can also be seen on my fountain pen tests, which I regularly publish. The line is thin, does not thicken, does not leak to the reverse side with moderate ink flow, good india inks works fine even with a hard and semi-flexible sharp dip nib. There is some transparency of paper, more than Xerox 120gr, but it is typical for office 80gsm papers.

Тримає навіть брашпен заправлений чорнилом, щоправда забув сфотографувати зворотний бік, але повірте практично нічим не відрізняється від наведеного вище після макального пера.

Works well even with brashpen filled with fountain ink.

Не знаю як якість змінюється від партії до партії, але ту, що в мене є, сміливо можу рекомендувати для письма чорнильними ручками, а також вправ каліграфії, друкування уроків та письма безпосередньо по надрукованому.

I don’t know how the quality changes from batch to batch, but I can safely recommend the one I have for writing with fountain pens, as well as calligraphy exercises, printing lessons and writing on it.

21.12.2021: new paper info:

Нова партія дещо відрізняється дизайном оформлення. На цей раз я вирішив ризикнути та відразу купив кілька без купівлі тестової пачки.

The new batch is slightly different in design. This time I decided to take a chance and immediately bought a box package without buying test pack.

Але не тільки дизайном відрізняється папір, але ще й структурою теж. Ліворуч фотографія текстури “на просвіт” паперу з нової партії, праворуч текстури аркуш зі старої партії. Fountain pen: Lamy Imporium EF, Ink: Pelikan Edelstein Garnet.

Старий папір добре тримав більшість поєднань чорнил та ручок, але найбільш критичними були тести чорнила макальними перами. Ліворуч тест паперу з нової партії, праворуч тест паперу зі старої партії. Макальне перо – вінтажний J.B. Mallat Extra Rapide №22 EF, чорнила – Pelikan 4001 Blue-black.

The old paper handled most ink and fountain pen combinations well, but the most critical ink tests was with pointed dip nib. У підсумках: безперечно папір змінився і в цьому є як плюси, так і мінуси. Новий папір став трохи тоншим і спресованим, так що з одного боку він втратив в приємній тактильності, але з іншого боку придбав у гладкості. Технічно мені здалося що нова партія стала ще краще тримати чорнило, але я постараюся найближчим часом протестувати його більш важким чорнилом типу Noodlers, de Atramentis або J.Herbin. Однак через більшу тонкість, мені здалося вона сильніше просвічує чорнило. Але що мені найменше сподобалося, так це те, що вона набула ще більшого синюватого відтінку. Стара партія була синювата в порівнянні з нормально білим папером, це зрозуміло, тому що це все ж таки офісний папір і такий відтінок дає візуально сильніше контраст з чорним тонером і створює ефект білого паперу. Але новий папір навіть синюватий у порівнянні зі старим, я вже не кажу який він синій у порівнянні з нейтрально білим:). Але в цілому я задоволений і залишаюся при своїй думці, що це один з найкращих недорогих паперів для чернеток чорнильними авторучками.

At the end: the paper has definitely changed and there are both pros and cons to this. The new paper has become a little thinner and more compressed, so on the one hand it has a loss in pleasant tactility, but on the other hand it has gained in smoothness. Technically, it seemed to me that the new batch has become even better to holding the ink, but I will try to test with more difficult(hard) inks such as Noodlers, de Atramentis or J.Herbin. However, due to the greater subtlety, it seemed to me that ink more ghosts on reverse side. But what I liked least of all was that it took on an even greater bluish tint. The old batch was bluish compared to normal white paper, which is understandable because it is still office paper and this tint gives a visually stronger contrast with black toner and creates the effect of snow-white paper. But the new paper is even bluish in comparison to the old one, not to mention how blue it is in comparison with neutral white :). But on the whole I am satisfied and can recomended that this is one of the best inexpensive paper for drafts notes or sketches by fountain pens.
