Hello to all! I have several brands on my site with their references to the historical past, such as Montegrappa, Conklin, Kaweco etc, and now it’s time to get acquainted with a similar reverence for its history from the famous Montblanc company.

Montblanc Heritage Collection 1912 (made in Germany) 109049

Данная ручка своим дизайном напоминает ручки из начала 20 века под названием “Safety pen”. Основная отличительная деталь этих ручек заключалась у скрывающемся в корпусе пере и данная модель не исключение. Сейчас данная конструкция называется “Retractable”, потому что перо убирается, но заправка уже не является “Eyedropper”. Материал изготовления корпуса это латунь покрытая черным лаком, а вот колпачок выполнен из фирменной драгоценной смолы. Окончания немного скруглены, но корпус классический цилиндрический почти прямой формы. Систему заправки производитель заявляет как поршневую, но на самом деле это встроенный конвертер (captive converter). Колпачок на резьбе, резьба однозаходная, открытие/закрытие за 1 и 3/4 оборотов.

The design of this pen is reminiscent of the pens from the early 20th century model known as “Safety pen”. The main distinguishing feature of these pens was the retractive nib hidden in the body and this model is no exception. Now this type of pen called “Retractable” because the nib is retractable, but the refillin system is not “Eyedropper”. The body is made of black lacquered brass, while the cap is made of branded precious resin. The ends are slightly rounded, but the body is classic cylindrical and almost straight. The manufacturer claims the filling system as piston, but in fact it is built-in converter (captive converter). Cap on thread, single-start thread, opening/closing in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Навершие колпачка украшает объёмный логотип компании в виде заснеженной вершины спрятанный под прозрачным лаком. Клип и кольцо сделаны в подобном историческому дизайне только стилизованный под современные тренды. С противоположной от клипа стороне, на кольце так-же нанесен логотип компании, а между ними уникальный серийный номер. Клип и кольцо крепления покрыты платиной.

The top of cap is decorated by voluminous company logo in the form of a snow-capped top, hidden under transparent resin. The clip and the ring are made in similar to historical design, only stylized to modern trends. On the side opposite to the clip, on the ring, the company logo is also applied, and between them a unique serial number. Clip and mounting ring are platinum plated.

С технической точки зрения очень интересен механизм выдвижения пера совмещенный с заправочной системой(движения поршня). Когда blind cap находится в положении окончания корпуса – ручка приводит в движение механизм выдвижения пера, а когда ручка выдвинута – то она приводит в движение поршень. В колпачке расположен специальный стержень который препятствует закрытию колпачка с выдвинутым пером.

From a technical point of view, the nib retractable mechanism combined with the filling system (piston movement) is very interesting. When the blind cap is at the end position of body, the knob drives the nib retractable mechanism, and when the knob is extended, it drives the piston. There is a special rod in the cap that prevents cap from closing when nib is out from the body.

В латунном корпусе имеются 2 желоба по которым движется перьевой узел.

The brass body has 2 grooves along which the nib unit moves.

Перо: собственно изюминка этой модели и вообще большинства современных ручек бренда Montblanc – это мягкое, 14 каратное золотое перо полностью покрытое родием. По размерам это перо идентично перу 144/145 модели ибо имеет идентичный фидер, но отличается немного агрессивным угловатым дизайном включая воздушное отверстие в виде треугольника. На перо нанесены: 4810, логотип в виде заснеженной вершины, 14K Au 585, ювелирный штамп StOD и имя компании Montnblanc.

The nib: the real highlight of this model from most modern Montblanc pens in general is the soft 14 karat gold nib completely plated by rhodium. This nib is identical in size to the 144/145 model nib as it has an identical feed, but differences a slightly aggressive angular design including a triangle-shaped breather hole. The nib bears the 4810, the snow-capped logo, 14K Au 585, the StOD jewelery stamp and the Montnblanc brandname.

В одном из своих ранних постов я уже описывал истории компании Montblanc, сейчас же хочу коснутся только этого самого раннего периода в память о котором сделана эта модель. Не смотря на то что информация о работе August Eberstein датирована 1906 годом и даже раннее когда он работал в компании Moore на территории США, компания Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH была основана в 1908 году вместе с Alfred Nehemias и Claus-Johannes Voss а Гамбурге. Первой моделью новой компании стала модель Rouge et Noir, названная так из за цветового решения: черного эбонитового корпуса и красного навершия колпачка. Буквально чуть позже были выпущены еще 2 модели: еще одна Safety pen – Diplomat и Eyedropper под брендом Simplo. Уже в 1909 году модель Rouge et Noir завоевала всеобщие симпатии и в 1910 появилась аналогичная модель но уже с белым навершием под названием Montblanc. Известная нам “снежинка” или заснеженная вершина появилась в период между 1913 и 1914 годами, на Rouge et Noir выпускавшейся до 1921 года, так-же навершие заменили с красного на красный логотип. Этот первый и ранний период развития компании принято считать до 1924 года, когда появилась известная нам по сегодняшний день модельный ряд Meisterstück.

Minutes of history:
In one of my early posts, I have already described the history of Montblanc, but now I want to touch only on this very early period in memory of which this model was made. Despite the fact that information about August Eberstein’s work dates back to 1906 and even earlier when he worked for Moore in the United States, Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH was founded in 1908 together with Alfred Nehemias and Claus-Johannes Voss in Hamburg. The first model of the new company was the Rouge et Noir model, so named because of the color scheme: black hard rubber body and red cap top. Just a little later, 2 more models were released: another Safety pen – Diplomat and Eyedropper under the Simplo brand. Already in 1909, the Rouge et Noir model won everyone’s sympathy, and in 1910 a similar model appeared, but with a white top called Montblanc. The well-known “snowflake” or snow-capped peak appeared between 1913 and 1914, on Rouge et Noir, which was produced until 1921, and the top was changed from red to red logo. This first and early period of the company’s development is considered to be until 1924, when the Meisterstück model range known to us to this day appeared.

Ручки раннего периода в техническом плане были достаточно простыми и представляли на тот момент самые распространенные типы Safety Pen и Eyedroper и напрямую связаны с полученным опытом Eberstein в компании Moore. Первое изобретение компании (патент № FR-379615 от 1907 г.) относился к игле расположенной в колпачке, которая не позволяла надеть колпачок на ручку с выдвинутым пером, что защищало перо от случайного повреждения надетым колпачком. Первая модель Rouge et Noir выпускалась в двух размерах (коротком и длинном) с 4я размерами перьев 2, 4, 6 и 7, а Diplomat с 3я – 2, 4 и 6. Позже к ним добавились сверх маленькие размеры 0 и 00, а так-же гигантская 12. Изначально модели изготавливались только из черного эбонита, но позже были сделаны модели еще двух расцветок “кораллового красного”(coral red) и “деревянной текстуры”(woodgrain), которые сейчас очень редки и высоко ценятся коллекционерами.

The early pens were technically quite simple and represented the most common Safety Pen and Eyedroper types at the time and are directly related to Eberstein’s experience at Moore. The first invention of the company (patent No. FR-379615 from 1907) related to a needle located in a cap, which did not allow putting the cap on the pen wihen the nib is out, which protected the nib from accidental damage when the cap was put on. The first model Rouge et Noir was produced in two sizes (short and long) with 4 nib sizes 2, 4, 6 and 7, and the Diplomat with 3 nib sizes – 2, 4 and 6. Later, ultra-small sizes 0 and 00 were added to them, as well as the same gigantic 12. Initially, the models were made only of black hard rubber, but later models were made in two more colors “Corral Red” and “Woodgrain”, which are now very rare and are highly valued by collectors.

Общие размеры инструмента: длина в сложенном виде – 121мм, со снятым колпачком и выдвинутым пером -126мм . Диаметр корпуса – 12.8мм, а в месте хвата – 11.6мм. Полный вес не заправленной ручки – 48.9г, а без колпачка – 37.3г.

Overall dimensions of the tool: folded length – 121mm, without cap and retracted nib -126mm. The body diameter is 12.8mm, and at the grip – 11.6mm. The total weight of unfilled pen is 48.9g, and without cap – 37.3g.

Ручка ко мне попала с неработающим механизмом заправки и неприятным звуком выдвижения пера, как будто в механизме был песок или сахар. После ремонта, профилактики и полной замены смазки, ручка была проверена в работе.

The pen came to me with non working filling mechanism and an unpleasant sound of the retract nib, as if there were sand or sugar in the mechanism. After repair, service and replacement of grease, the pen was tested in work.

Наклейки на корпусе уже не сохранилась, но судя по замеренным параметрам из под пера это стандартное перо размерности М. Ширина линии прямой стороной – 0.5мм, при этом нажим позволяет увеличить линию до 0.8мм. Обратная сторона стандартно царапала, но после дополнительной полировки стала давать гладкую прозрачную линию шириной 0.4мм.

The stickers on the body are no longer preserved, but judging by the measured parameters from the nib, this is a most used nib of M dimension. The width of the line by the right side is 0.5mm, while the pressure allows to increase the line to 0.8mm. The reverse side was scratching as standard, but after additional polishing it began to give a smooth transparent line with a width of 0.4 mm.

В итоге: модель конечно немного спорная и со своими недостатками, но из-за невероятно приятного пера определенно заслуживает пристального внимания и я готов прощать этой ручке все остальные недостатки. До знакомства(в руках) больше всего меня отталкивало непропорционально корпусе маленькое перо, но когда начинаешь пользоваться ручкой, то эта непропорциональность становится незаметной и несущественной. Сейчас я вижу самый большой недостаток этой модели это маленький резервуар стандартного конвертера, но я понимаю что места внутри этой ручки для большего объема просто нет. Еще один недостаток это трущаяся часть корпуса из-за уплотнительного кольца в колпачке, которая рано или поздно сотрет лаковое покрытие. Достоинства же данной модели очевидны: во первых это невероятно приятное мягкое(не флексовое) перо; во вторых – это компактные размеры в сложенном виде превращающиеся в полноразмерную ручку в рабочем состоянии; в третьих – это просто очень красивая ручка; и в четвертых – от логотипа на навершии просто невозможно оторвать взгляд, а оно красивее многих более лимитированных и специальных изданий:).

At the end: the model is certainly a little controversial and with its own shortcomings, but because of the incredibly pleasant nib it definitely deserves close attention and I am ready to forgive this pen for all other shortcomings. Before I met (in my hands), what repulsed me most of all was the small nib disproportionate to the body, but when I start using this pen, this disproportion becomes imperceptible and insignificant to me. Now I see the biggest drawback of this model is the small reservoir of the standard captive converter, but I understand that there is simply no free space inside for more volume. Another drawback is the rubbing part of the body due to the ring in cap, which sooner or later will wear off the lacquer coating. The pros of this model are obvious: firstly, it is an incredibly pleasant soft nib(not flexible); secondly, these are compact folded sizes that turn into a full-size pen in working position; thirdly, it’s just a very beautiful pen; and fourthly, it is simply impossible to take your eyes off from the logo on the cap:), and this top it is more beautiful than many more limited and special editions pens :).

В первом дополнении хочу показать как выглядела заводская смазки и какой пришлось выточить ключ из подсобных средств чтобы выкрутить блокирующую втулку перьевого узда.

In the first addon I want to show what the factory lubricant looked like and what kind of key I had to make from the auxiliary means in order to unscrew the blocking sleeve of the nib unit.

Вторым дополнением хочу показать внутреннее герметизирующее кольцо колпачка и след, который от него со временем остается на корпусе ручки.

As a second addon, I want to show the inner sealing ring of the cap and the trace from it eventually remains on the body.
