If you expect or long for something good long enough, sooner or later you will get it, but perhaps unfortunately, the requirements and expectations for this object are formed, subconsciously, much higher than for something else that you will receive by chance. So one of my dreams in the world of fountain pens was to have a traditional Urushi pen, especially after holding the Nakaya Cigar Kikyo, moreover, I even dreamed in the Aka Tamenuri color.

Як що очікуєш чи прагнеш чогось доброго достатньо довго, то рано чи пізно це отримаєш, але, можливо на жаль, вимоги та сподівання до предмета формуються, підсвідомо, значно більші, аніж до іншого що отримаєш випадково. Тож одна із моїх мрій у світі ручок – це була ручка з традиційним Уруші, особливо після того, як я тримав у руках Nakaya Cigar Kikyo, більш того я навіть мріяв саме у кольорі Ака Таменурі.

Wancher DreamPen True Urushi Aka-Tamenuri w|14K JoWo nib B size (handmade in Japan? -> last update) true craftsmanship

Розповсюдженню називати цю форму “Торпедо” чи “Сигара” як і у моделі Montblanc Meisterstuk 149, чи Sailor Large 1911, але у цьому випадку це відповідає дійсності на 100%, бо ковпачок за контуром збігається до корпусу. Матеріал виготовлення – справжній японський ебоніт, вкритий справжнім лаком Уруші, складного багатошарового кольору від червоного до темно-червоного/коричневого яке має назву Aka-Tamenuri, що в перекладі з японського і означає “червоний лак”. Система заправки – картріджно-конвертрена формату International. Ковпачок на різбленні, різблення однозахідне, закриття/відкриття за повний один оберт. Кліпа немає.

It is common to call this shape “Torpedo” or “Cigar” as in the Montblanc Meisterstuk 149 or Sailor Large 1911 models, but in this case it is 100% true, because the edges of cap coincides to the body. The material is real Japanesse ebonite, laquered by real Urushi with complex multi-layer color from red to dark red/brown, which is called Aka-Tamenuri, which means “red laquer” in Japanese. The filling system is a cartridge/converter by International standard. Cap on thread with one-way threading, closes/opens in one full turn. Body without clip.

Єдина не ебонітова, металева частина, це сталева втулка для розташування перового вузла з одного боку, та з’єднання с корпусом з іншого. Оскільки це розширена версія відносно до базової моделі, то сам фідер, та стакан перового вузла виконано з червоного ебоніту.

The only non-ebonite part is steel sleeve for connect nib unit from one side, and connection to the body on the other. Since this is an extended version relative to the basic model, the feed and collar of nib unit are made of red ebonite.

Ще цікава особливість даної моделі – це внутрішній ковпачок з пружиною що додатково ізолює перо від висихання.

Another interesting feature of this model is the inner cap with spring that additionally isolates the nib from drying out.

Перо: золоте, 14 каратне, великого 6-го розміру, двох тонове. На диво перо доволі м’яке та приємне, але звісно це зовсім не флексове перо. На перо нанесено логотип бренду у вигляді квітки та назва бренду Wancher методом лазерного гравіювання, та технічні параметри золота 14K-585 і розмірність пера – B. Вага пера – 0.79г.

The nib: gold, 14 carat, large size 6, two-tone. Surprisingly, the nib is quite spribgly, soft and pleasant, but of course it is not a flexible nib at all. The nib has the brand logo in the form of flower and name company Wancher by laser engraving, below placed technical parameters of material 14K-585 gold samples and dimension of tip is B. Weight of nib is 0.79g.

The overall tool dimensions: folded length – 152mm, without cap – 132,8mm, body diameter – 15.8mm, at the grip – 11.5mm. The full weight is 31g(include converter Schmidt K5), and without cap – 22g.

Загальні розміри інструменту: повна довжина у складеному стані 152мм, при знятому ковпачку – 132,8мм, діаметр корпусу – 15.8мм, в районі хвату – 11.5мм. Вага всього інструменту – 31г(включаючи конвертер Schmidt K5), а без ковпачка – 22г.

Хвилинки історії:
Модель дуже молода та навіть я пам’ятаю як все починалось, приблизно:). Тобто с початку, Taizo Okagaki, засновник та CEO Wancher проводив опит серед спільноти користувачів перових ручок які у кого побажання і як хто бачить ту саму свою ручку мрії. Потім все це обміркувавши та зробивши деякі висновки, спільноті  був запропонований проєкт на kickstarter, і це було приблизно наприкінці січня 2018 року. Старт стався успішним, то ми зараз маємо ці привабливі витвори японського мистецтва.

Moments of history:
The model is very young and even I remember how it all started, roughly :). That is, from the beginning, Taizo Okagaki, the founder and CEO of Wancher conducted a survey among the community of users of fountain pens, what their wishes are and how they see their dream pen. Then after thinking about all this and coming to some conclusions, the community was offered a project on kickstarter and this was around the end of January 2018. The launch was successful, so we now have these fine fountain pens of Japanese art.

Перші моделі були запропоновані з ебоніту, друга хвиля повинна була бути представлена з додатковим покриттям лаком Уруші, та третя з класичним японським мистецтвом Maki-E. Колір ебоніту був чорним, а ось перші кольори Уруші були: чорний, червоний, синій та Ака-Таменурі. Трохи пізніше до них додалися зелений, пурпурний та жовтий. Кожна ручка True Urushi виготовлена вручну з 天然漆 (Теннен Уруші) або Natural Urushi від найкращих майстрів Уруші у Ваджіма. Щоб зробити таку ручку, потрібно від 4 до 6 місяців з процесом декількох складних кроків. Тільки майстри з багаторічним досвідом здатні створити такий корпус справжньої якості.

The first models were offered in ebonite, the second wave was to be presented with an additional cover by Urushi lacquer, and the third with the classic Japanese art of Maki-E. The color of ebonite was black, but the first colors of Urushi were: black, red, blue and Aka-Tamenuri. A little later, green, purple and yellow were added to them. Each True Urushi pen is handcrafted from 天然漆 (Tennen Urushi) or Natural Urushi by the finest Urushi craftsmen in Wajima. It takes 4 to 6 months to make fountain pen with a process of several complex steps. Only craftsmen with many years of experience are able to create this perfect body of real quality.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить  – 0.6-0.65мм, а тиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до – 1.0мм. Зворотний бік дає тонкішу лінію  0.35-0.4мм завширшки. Лінія прямою стороною волога та насичена.

The width of ordinary line by the right side is – 0.6-0.65mm, and the pressure allows to increase this line to – 1.0 mm. The reverse side gives a line 0.35-0.4mm wide. The line by the right side is wet and juicy.

То що наприкінці: Попри те що це якнайдоступніша модель в кольорах Уруші Ака Таменурі – це дуже приваблива модель, але як і люба інша ручка має низку нюансів.
Мінуси: по-перше, це класичний японський дизайн який притаманний багатьом сучасним та вінтажним моделям топ класу. З того що у складеному вигляді це гладка форма, у руці ми маємо значно тонкіший гріп та більш товстий корпус і до цього треба звикнути, як що у вас немає такого досвіда. Другий момент, це в переважної більшості відсутність кліпу, що теж є особливістю до якого треба пристосовуватись. Для мене це не є актуально, але я вирішив це відмітити окремо. Форма та розмір фідера – мені здалось  занадто малим до такого інструменту і розміру пера, та виглядає як щось що не з цього дизайну. Хоча у мене і самий крутий варіант – з червоного ебоніту, але все одно. Доречи коли я розібрав фідер то з’ясував що чорнильний канат ніяк не перетинаються за ламелами фідеру, тобто ламелі не несуть ніякого навантаження і це суто декоративна річ на відмінність від тих функцій що до них закладав ще той самий Вотерман. То мені здається що як в цьому вигляді то краще фабричний пластиковий, ніж такий ебонітовий. Ще мені не дуже сподобався перовий вузол, я розумію що це базова конструкція JoWo, але в моєму випадку перо тримається не достатньо щільно, як на мій погляд, та при використанні видає неприємний звук скрипу, нібито ви сидите на стільці який постійно скрипить від кожного руху.
Плюси: безперечно це той самий дизайн, той що міг потрапити в мінуси, але-ж це класика, традиційна форма, можна сказати навіть концептуальна, як катана тільки для письма, бо відомо що слово теж може бути зброєю. Рівна гладка форма яка в себе ховає спроможність відображати міць думок. По друге це неймовірний колір та матеріал: коли вам здається( по фото) що Уруши це дуже привабливо, ви помиляєтесь – це фантастично дивовижно, особливо в таких складних кольорах як різновиди Таменурі. За такий колір та відчуття можна пробачити будь-які недоліки)). Так що у підсумках хотів би сказати: що я дуже поважаю прагнення Тайзо що до розповсюдження його (японських) національних традицій, корінь та культури, і ще більше поважаю роботу майстрів які попри наш техногенний вік, намагаються зберегти це і створювати вироби мистецтва.
Тобто я рекомендую до замовлення коли це знову буде доступно, бо наразі всі Таменурі розпродані.

At the end: Despite the fact that this is the most affordable model in the colors of Urushi Aka Tamenuri – it is a very attractive model, but like any other pen it has a number of nuances.
Cons: First, it’s a classic Japanese design common to many modern and vintage top-end Japanesse models. Since it is a smooth shape when folded, in the hand we have a much thinner grip to the thicker body, and you have to get used to it, if you do not have such experience. The second point is the overwhelming majority is there no clip, which is also a feature to which one must adapt. This is not relevant for me, but I decided to mark it separately. The shape and size of the feed – I thought it was too small for this tool and the size of the nib, and it looks like something that is not of this design. Although I have the coolest option – feed made from red ebonite, but still. By the way, when I disassembled the nib unit, I found out that the ink channel not connected to the lamellas of the feed, that is, the lamellas do not carry any load and this is a purely decorative thing in contrast to the functions that the wellknown Waterman laid for them. It seems to me that in this form, factory plastic feed is better than ebonite. I also didn’t really like the nib unit construction, I understand that this is a basic standard JoWo design, but in my case, the nib does not hold tightly enough, in my opinion, and when using it makes an unpleasant creaking sound, as if you are sitting on a chair that constantly creaks with every movement .
Pros: it’s definitely the same design:)), the one that could get into the cons, but it’s a classic, traditional form, you can even say conceptual, like a katana only for writing, because it is known that words can also be weapons. Stright, smooth form that do the ability to reflect the power of thoughts. Secondly, it is an incredible color and material: when you think (from the photo) that Urushi is very attractive, you are wrong – it is fantastically amazing, especially in this complex colors as the Tamenuri varieties. For this color and feeling, any flaws can be forgiven)). So, in conclusion, I would like to say: that I greatly respect Taizo’s desire to spread his (Japanese) national traditions, roots and culture, and even more respect for masters work, despite our technological age, trying to preserve their culture and create works of art.
That is, I recommend to order when it is available again, because currently all Tamenuri are sold out.

With 63-year hands-on experience in lacquerware technique, Master Taya is one of the top Masters in Japanese lacquerware creation.
Believing that “Once the traditional technique disappears, we cannot revive such valuable art”, Master Taya has spent his whole life to master the lacquerware techniques and pass it to the next generations. His son, Mr. Akihiro Taya is current vice-president of the Association and owner of Taya Shikkiten.

Маючи 63-річний практичний досвід у техніці лакового посуду, Майстер Тая є одним із найкращих майстрів у створенні японського лаку.
Вважаючи, що «Як тільки традиційна техніка зникне, ми не зможемо відродити таке цінне мистецтво», Майстер Тая все життя витратив на те, щоб освоїти техніки лакування і передати їх наступним поколінням. Його син, пан Акіхіро Тая, є нинішнім віце-президентом Асоціації та власником Тая Шиккітена.

Колегії по перовому ком’юніті, після публікації цього огляду дали мені посилання на таку детективну статтю стосовно бренду Wancher – “та чи дійсно це зроблено у Японії?”. Чесно кажучи доводи дуже вагомі, але й прямих доказів немає, то я зараз у серйозних сумнівах. З іншого боку, на мій не професійний погляд покриття цієї ручки нічим не відрізняється від покриття на той же Nakaya яку я теж тримав у руках і згадав на початку поста. Тож навіть якщо це покриття зроблене у В’єтнамі воно мені все одно дуже подобається візуально, хоча неприємний присмак залишився. Як воно буде тримати час згодом з’ясуємо.

Colleagues by fountain pen community, after publishing this review, gave me a link to such a detective article about the Wancher brand – “is it really made in Japan?”. To be honest, the arguments are very strong, but there is no direct evidence either, so I am now in serious doubt. On the other hand, in my non-professional opinion, the coating of this pen is no different from the coating of the same Nakaya, which I also held in my hands and mentioned at the beginning of the post. So even if this coating is made in Vietnam, I still really like it visually, although the unpleasant aftertaste remained. We will find out later how it will keep time.

Update 12.11.2002:

Після 5-6 місячного не регулярного використання, у мене частково стерлася анодування на латунній втулці різблення ковпачка. Все інше мене цілком влаштовує та після заміни пера це одна із моїх найулюбленіших ручок.

After 5-6 months of non-regular use, the anodization on the caps thread brass bushing has partially worn off. Everything else suits me perfectly and after changing and customizing nib it is one of my favorite pens.
