Hello to all fountain pen fans! In 2019, this brand shook the world pen community with its appearance. Of course, it would be more interesting to try the Nautilus model, which from the point of view of design is much more attractive, but the only one Korean store where I found an attractive color completely ignored me. That is, when you are refused, it is of course an unpleasant thing but sometimes understand, but when you are completely ignored, it is much more unpleasant, especially since I asked to purchase for the full price, I was only interested in the possibility of delivery with any variants. So a few days before my latest purchase – Pilot Custom 845 , I happened to see this model for sale and decided to take a chance.

Вітаю всіх прихильників перового письма! В 2019 році цей бренд сколихнув міжнародний ринок перових ручок своєю появою. Звісно цікавіше було б спробувати модель Nautilus яка с точки зору дизайну значно привабливіша, але єдиний магазин у якому я знайшов привабливий колір був корейським та він цілком мене проігнорував. Тобто коли тобі відмовляють це звісно неприємна річ, але коли тебе повністю ігнорують це набагато неприємніше, тим паче що я питав придбати за повну вартість, мене цікавила лише можливість доставки. Тож за декілька днів до мого останнього придбання Pilot Custom 845, я випадково побачив у продажу цю модель та вирішив ризикнути.

Narwhal Schuylkill 365 Limited Edition Ebonite (made in USA?)

Ручка має за формою прямий циліндр з майже плоским навершям та вироблена з ебоніту текстури woodgrain червоно-фіолетового кольору. В деяких джерелах пишуть що це червоний чи темно-червоний ебоніт, але насправді червоно-фіолетовий. Корпус та ковпачок повністю виточені, а не відлиті. Система заправки – поршнева. Ковпачок на різбленні, різблення двох-західне, відкриття\закриття за 1 та 1/3 обертів.

This pen has a straight cylindrical shape with an almost flat tops and made of red-purple woodgrain ebonite. Some sources say that it is red or dark red ebonite, but it is actually red-purple. The body and cap are fully turning on a lathe, not injection molding. Filling system is real piston-filler. Cap on thread, 2 starts thread, opening/closing in 1 and 1/3 turns.

Конструкція доволі проста і ручка майже повністю розбирається, але варто зазначити що різблення поранкового механізму ліва, як у більшості ручок виробництва радянського союзу. Фідер пластиковий та 100% китайський, який використовується у більшості китайських ручок з 6м розміром пера, але стакан схоже власного дизайну та комплектується двома ущільнювальними силіконовими кільцями.

The design is quite simple and pen can be completely disassembled, but it is worth noting that the thread of piston mechanism is left-handed, as in most pens produced in the Soviet Union. The feed is plastic and 100% Chinese, which is used in most Chinese pens with 6 sized nibs, but the collar by own design and complete with two silicone sealing o-rings.

Ковпачок прикрашен масивним кліпом жовтого кольору та медальйоном у наверші. Та оскільки це лімітоване видання, на ручці поршня вигравійован персональний номер 118/365.

The cap is decorated by massive clip yellow coated and medallion at the top. And since this is a limited edition, the piston knob has engraving the personal number 118/365.

Матеріал 100% відчувається ебонітом і це один із факторів заради чого я купив цю ручку та бажав перевірити власноруч.  Тобто як що не брати до уваги характерний запах, до речі, який не вивітрився з 2020 року, то всі різблення  говорять про те що це ебоніт (на відміну від нещодавно огляданого Pilot Custom 845). В баррель вклеєна пластикова (акрилова, бо прозора) муфта з різблення під поранковий механізм.

The material feels 100% as ebonite and this is one of the factors why I bought this pen and wanted to test it myself. That is, if we do not take into account the characteristic smell, which, by the way, has not weathered since 2020, then all the threads say this is ebonite (unlike the recently reviewed Pilot Custom 845). A plastic (maybe acrylic, because it is transparent) bushing is glued inside to the barrel for piston mechanism connect.

Ще виглядає цікавою конструкція поршня, тобто не стільки цікава як просте та дешеве рішення. Навіщо замовляти окремо силіконову головку поршня складної форми, коли можна відлити пластикову форму поршня та натягнути два сантехнічні ущільнювальні гумові кільця:)).

The design of the piston also looks interesting, that is not interesting as engineer construction but a simple and cheap solution. Why order a silicone piston head with a complicated shape when can inject molding of piston and use two plumbing rubber o-rings:)).

Перо: власно другий цікавий для мене фактор. У всіх джерелах написано що перо власного виробництва. Навіть деякі форумчани мене запевнювали що компанія виграла якийсь позив з цього приводу. По-перше я не розумію кому треба було позиватись, по друге форма пера, форма фідера, та лазерне гравіювання наштовхує на думку що це аутсорсинг і скоріше за все китайський. Звісно це тільки мої без доказані враження. Тож перо 6 розміру, сталеве, покрито жовтим кольором, ординарно жорстке та дуже гладке.  На перо нанесено візерунок, який мені щось нагадує але я не можу пригадати який бренд. Під дихаючим отвором нанесено логотип компанії та назва бренду Narwhal. Згідно опису на оффсайті пера можуть бути лише двох розмірів F та M.

The nib: this is actually the second interesting factor for me. In all sources it is written that this nib is in-house production. Even some members of fp-group assured me that the company had won a lawsuit on this matter. First of all, I don’t understand who should have been sued, secondly, the shape of this nib, the shape of this feed, and the laser engraving suggest that it is outsourced and most likely made in China. Of course, these are just my unproven impressions. So, nib is 6 size, stainless steel, yellow coated, ordinarily hard and very smooth. The nib has ornamental pattern on perimeter that reminds me of something, but I can’t remember which brand. The company logo and brand name Narwhal are placed below the breather hole. According to the description on the offsite, there can only be two nib sizes: F and M.

Narwhal Pens а з недавнього часу Nahvalur (мені нагадує щось індійське, хоча цей термін начебто давньоісландський) є молодим брендом у світі пір’яних ручок. Компанія дебютувала на DC Supershow 1 серпня 2019 року з серією великих ручок з яскравого акрилу: Poseidon blue, Angelfish yellow, Merman green та Hippocampus purple. Згідно з відкритих джерел веб-сайт запрацював 7 серпня 2019 року як narwhalpens.com.
Модель Schuylkill була представлена на Philly(Philadelphia) Pen Show з 17 по 19 січня 2020 року. Назва Шуйлкілл начебто походить від назви річки в Пенсільванії та вимовляється як “skool-kl”. Річка була названа голландськими поселенцями та означає «прихована річка», а нарвал – це вид китів, з характерним єдиним бивнем.
На відзнаку першого річного ювілею компанії, було створено спеціальну лімітовану серію Schuylkill, яка була виготовлена з ебоніту в обмеженої кількості 365 штук, яка почала продаватись з 22 вересня 2020 року.

Moments of history:
Narwhal Pens and more recently Nahvalur (reminds me of something Indian, although this term seems to be ancient Icelandic) is a young brand in the world of fountain pens. The company debuted at the DC Supershow on August 1, 2019 with a series of large pens made of bright acrylic: Poseidon blue, Angelfish yellow, Merman green and Hippocampus purple. According to open sources, the website went live on August 7, 2019 as narwhalpens.com.
The Schuylkill model was presented at the Philly(Philadelphia) Pen Show from January 17 to 19, 2020. The name Schuylkill seems to come from the name of the river in Pennsylvania and is pronounced “skool-kl”. The river was named by Dutch settlers and means “hidden river”, and the narwhal is a species of whale with a distinctive single tusk.
In honor of the company’s first year anniversary, a special limited edition Schuylkill was created in ebonite in a limited number of 365 pieces, which went on sale on September 22, 2020.

Тому що я не придбав ручку новою, то не було сенсу тестувати як є, тому я спочатку розібрав, промив, змастив(доречи поршень та шток були сухі), зібрав, а вже потім протестував.

Because I didn’t buy this pen as new, it didn’t make sense to test it as it is, so I first disassembled, cleaned, lubricated (piston and rod was dry), assembled and only then tested it.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0,4мм, тобто це європейська F, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,6мм. Зворотний бік  пише лінією в 0.35мм. Подача я би сказав волога обидвома сторонами зовсім без фідбеку.

The width of the line by the right side is 0.4 mm, that is, it is European F, pressure allows to increase this line to 0.6 mm. The reverse side writes with line of 0.35 mm. I would say the flow is wet by both sides without any feedback at all.

В решті решт: Почнемо з плюсів: по-перше це доволі крупна ручка, що для мене добре. По друге це цікава ручка, але як що купувати в версії ебоніт, бо акрилові мене зовсім не приваблюють. Але як що вам не подобаються запахи, то це точно не ваш варіант, бо як що за 2 роки запах залишився різким, то навряд чи від кудись пропаде)). Ручка легко розбирається та обслуговується, як що ви маєте відповідний ключ. Це поршнева ручка – для багатьох це теж перевага. Тепер про мінуси: в моєї версії перо з фідером тримається дуже слабо. За рахунок того що у ручці використовується типовий для картриджної системи перовий вузол, конструкція поршня виглядає китайською та має невикористовуваний об’єм дорівнюючий розміру оглядового віконця. Таж сама конструкція не дозволяє повністю промити ручку як що її не розбирати. Гладке перо без будь-якого фідбеку нагадую мені пера PenBBS що мені не подобаються., тож 100% я заміню це перо на інше. В цілому як корпус ручка мені подобається, а для вас купувати чи не купувати рішення приймайте самі.

ps: доречи, у минулому чи позаминулому році я писав єлектронного листа у компанію з деякими питаннями, яке теж залишилось без відповіді)). І це ніяк не вплинуло на мої висновки!

At the end: let’s start with the pros: firstly, it’s a rather large pen, which is good for my hand. Secondly, this is an interesting pen, if we says about ebonite version, because acrylic ones do not appeal to me at all. But if you don’t like smells, then this is definitely not your choise, because after 2 years the smell has remained sharp, it is unlikely to disappear from anywhere)). The pen is easy to disassemble and serviced if you have special service key. This is a piston-filler pen – for many, this is also an advantage. Now about the cons: in my version, the nib with feed holds very weakly. Due to the fact that this pen uses a typical for cartridge system nib unit, the design of the barrel looks Chinese and has an unused volume equal to the size of ink viewing window. Also this design does not allow you to completely clean this pen, as if it is not disassembled. The smooth nib without any feedback reminds me PenBBS nibs experiences which I don’t like, so I will 100% replace this nib to another one. But finally, in general, I like the pen as a body, but for you, whether to buy or not to buy is up to you.

ps: by the way, last year or the year before last, I wrote an email to the company with some questions, which also remained unanswered)). But it did not affect my conclusions in any way!

Мені не пощастило придбати повний набір в який входить дерев’яний футляр та шкіряний слівер, тож доповнення я почну с просто крупного фото пера.

I wasn’t lucky enough to purchase the full retail set that includes the wooden case and leather sliver, so in first addon just a magnify photo of the nib.

Ось з таким зміщенням до мене потрапило перо, але як я писав вище тертя дуже слабке, то-ж перо можна було поправити дуже легко пальцями.

With such an offset, the pen got to me, but as I wrote above, the friction is very weak, so the nib could be adjusted very easily by fingers.

А ось таке перо присутнє в огляді Rupert Arzeian від 06.03.2021, та яке значно ближче виглядає до in-house.

Доволі важко сфотографувати цей дизайн щоб він передавав одночасно і текстуру і справжній колір. Але здається мені це вдалось. На фотографіях вище могло здаватись що колір цієї ручки темно червоно-теракотовий, але насправді він червоно-фіолетовий.

It is quite difficult to photograph this design so that it conveys both the texture and the true color at the same time. But I think I succeeded. In the photos above, it might appear that the color of this pen is dark red-terracotta, but it is actually red-purple or red-violet.
