(modern) Narwhal Nautilus Cumberland LE

When a few years ago these pens released on Cultpens as Nautilus Rosewood design, I really wanted to buy them, but I was disturbed by the pink sheen, which I didn’t really like, but the pens still sold out very quickly. For some time I was sad that I didn’t dare to buy it when I can, because I didn’t like the later shades Pelagia which appeared after. Last year, I accidentally saw an ebonite model with a wood texture and immediately realized that this is exactly what I was waiting for. Unfortunately, the experience of communicating and buying from the seller who presented these pens was not pleasant, but I really wanted to try this pen after Schuylkill, so I passed all the ways, and now I am ready to share it to you.

Коли кілька років тому з’явились ці ручки Nautilus Rosewood на Cultpens я дуже хотів їх придбати, але мене тоді бентежив рожевий відблиск який мені не дуже подобався, але ручки все одно дуже швидко були розпродані. Деякий час я сумував що не наважився придбати, тому що відтінки яки з’явились пізніше Pelagia мені взагалі не подобались. Торік я випадково побачив ебоніт з текстурою дерева та одразу зрозумів що я чекав саме на це. На жаль досвід спілкування та покупки з продавцем у якого були представлені ці ручки не був приємним, але спробувати після Schuylkill дуже хотілось, тому я пройшов всі випробування і зараз готовий поділитись з вами.

Narwhal Nautilus Cumberland Limited Edition for Korea (made in China) 03050141

Форма даної ручки пряма, сигароподібна зі скругленими закінченнями, розмір доволі великий як Montblanc 149 чи Pelikan M1000. Матеріал корпусу – ебоніт текстури Woodgrain названий компанією Cumberland. Система заправки – поршнева. Ковпачок на різбленні з двома нитками, закриття/відкриття за 2 оберти. Ця модель лімітована у кількості 58 штук, але кошна ручка не має особистого номеру.

The shape of this pen is straight, cigar-like with rounded ends, the size is quite large like Montblanc 149 or Pelikan M1000. The body material is ebonite with a Woodgrain texture named company by the Cumberland. The filling system is real piston-filler. Cap on thread with two threads, close/open in 2 turns. This model is limited to 58 pieces, but not numbered for each pen.

Ковпачок прикрашений золотистим медальйоном на наверші як і Schuylkill, кліпом та широким кільцем на якому розташований складний візерунок морських хвиль з назвою бренду Narwhal, двічи по колу. Всередині ковпачка ще є другий пластиковий ковпачок. Була мною помічена цікава особливість: коли торкаєшся кільця бавовняними рукавичками то візерунок чіпляється за всі волокна, гадаю що золотисте покриття було додано останнім після механічної обробки кільця, але без проміжного полірування.

The cap is decorated by metal medallion on the top like on the Schuylkill, a clip and wide ring which have an intricate pattern of sea waves with the brand name Narwhal, twice by a circle. There is a second plastic cap inside the main cap. I noticed an interesting feature: when I touch the ring by cotton gloves, the pattern clings to all the fibers, I think that the yellow-gold coating was added last, after the ring was machined, but without intermediate polishing.

Корпус прикрашений оглядовим чорнильним віконцем у формі ілюмінатора(три по колу) завдяки якому модель і має назву Nautilus. Втулка поршневого механізму зроблена з металу на відміну від того ж Schuylkill. В ебонітову ручку поршня вклеєна пластикова втулка з різбленням.

The body is decorated by ink window in the form of a porthole (three on a circle), thanks to which the model has the name Nautilus. The bushing of the piston mechanism is made of metal, unlike the same in Schuylkill. On piston ebonite knob placed plastic sleeve with thread.

Перо: звичайне сталеве перо жовтого кольору та 6го розміру, жорстке та гладке. На поверхню пера з двох боків та над дихальним отвором нанесено ажурний візерунок та логотип компанії у вигляді морського єдинорога Нарвала пірнаючого у хвилі. З лівого боку розташувалась позначка розміру кінчика – F. Виробник заявляє що використовує пера власного виробництва, але за характером мені здалось це звичайне китайське перо яке дуже схоже на пера від PenBBS. Більш того мені здається що для нанесення інформації використано метод лазерного гравіювання, але після цього виконано покриття пера позолотою за рахунок чого перо виглядає більш привабливіше ніж коли лазерне гравіювання наноситься наприкінці процесу.

The nib: usual, yellow color stainless steel nib by 6 size, hard and smooth. On the surface of the nib by two sides and above breathing hole, an openwork pattern and on center the company logo in the form of sea unicorn Narwhal diving into the waves are applied. On the left side placed mark F is a tip size. The manufacturer claims that he uses in-house nib, but in terms of PROPERTIES, it seemed to me to be an ordinary Chinese modern nib, which is very similar to PenBBS nibs. Moreover, it seems to me that the laser engraving method was used to apply the info on surface, but before yellow coating, which makes the nib look more attractive than when the laser engraving is applied on final stage.

The overall tool dimensions: folded length – 150mm, without cap – 132,6mm, body diameter – 14mm, at the grip – 11.11mm. The full weight is 31,5g, and without cap – 17,7g.

Загальні розміри інструменту: повна довжина у складеному стані 150 мм, при знятому ковпачку – 132,6 мм, діаметр корпусу – 14 мм, в районі хвату – 11.11мм. Вага всього інструменту – 31,5 г, а без ковпачка – 17,7 г.

Хвилинки історії:
Не можу пригадати коли з’явилась модель Nautilus, але можна припустити з великою часткою вірогідності що дизайнери надихнулись підводним човном Наутілус відомого капітана Немо з романів Жюля Верна.
Жуль Габріель Верн(Jules Gabriel Verne) — французький письменник, автор пригодницьких романів. Разом із Гербертом Уеллсом вважається засновником жанру наукової фантастики. Розпочинав з написання театральних п’єс, що не користувалися особливим успіхом до 1863 року, коли видавець П’єр-Жуль Етцель опублікував його перший роман «П’ять тижнів на повітряній кулі». Цей твір, разом з наступним — «Подорожі і пригоди капітана Геттераса», започаткував серію Незвичайних подорожей, що включає загалом 62 романи та 18 оповідань і повістей.
Капітан Немо (лат. Nemo — «Ніхто») — вигаданий персонаж романів Жуля Верна. Інженер, винахідник, конструктор, вчений-океанолог, борець проти британського колоніалізму. Творець і капітан фантастичного підводного корабля «Наутилус». Персонаж зустрічається в романах «20 000 льє під водою» і «Таємничий острів», які разом з романом «Діти капітана Гранта», складають трилогію, об’єднану спільними героями.
«Наутилус» (Nautilus) — вигаданий підводний човен капітана Немо. Невибагливий і надійний, маючи неймовірні як для свого часу, так і, частково, для теперішнього, технічні характеристики. Так, за сім місяців він здолав відстань 20 000 льє (близько 90 000 км), що більше ніж удвічі перевищує довжину екватора, опустився на дно океану, а потім зумів вибратися з сильного виру. Він був знаряддям помсти і водночас дослідною лабораторією, потопив кілька кораблів і допоміг знайти Атлантиду. «Наутілус» став втіленням технічного прогресу, а його ім’я стало найбільш популярним серед субмарин. Завдяки йому Жуля Верна стали називати «батьком підводних човнів».

Moments of history:
I can’t remember when the Nautilus model is released, but I can assume with a high degree of probability that the designers were inspired by the Nautilus submarine of the famous Captain Nemo from Jules Verne’s novels.
Jules Gabriel Verne is a French writer, author of adventure novels. Together with Herbert Wells, he is considered the founder of the science fiction genre. He began by writing theatrical plays, which were not particularly successful until 1863, when the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel published his first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon. This work, together with the next one – “The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Getteras”, began the series of Extraordinary Voyages, which includes a total of 62 novels and 18 short stories and novellas.
Captain Nemo (lat. Nemo – “Nobody”) is a fictional character in the novels of Jules Verne. Engineer, inventor, designer, oceanographer, fighter against British colonialism. The creator and captain of the fantastic submarine Nautilus. The character appears in the novels “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “Mysterious Island”, which, together with the novel “Captain Grant’s Children”, make up a trilogy united by the same characters.
“Nautilus” is the fictional submarine of Captain Nemo. Unpretentious and reliable, having incredible technical characteristics both for its time and, in part, for the present. So, in seven months, he covered a distance of 20,000 leagues (about 90,000 km), which is more than twice the length of the equator, sank to the bottom of the ocean, and then managed to get out of a strong vortex. He was an instrument of revenge and at the same time a research laboratory, sank several ships and helped to find Atlantis. “Nautilus” became the embodiment of technical progress, and its name became the most popular among submarines. Thanks to him, Jules Verne was called the “father of submarines”.

Я не став навіть розбирати ручку для огляду, а заправив його із коробки для перевірки, а вже після тесту розібрав для фотографування.

I did not disassemble the pen at the start for review, want tested pen from the box, but after the test, disassembled pen for photos.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить – 0.4 мм. Зворотний бік дає тонкішу лінію 0.3 мм завширшки. Перо навіть не пружне тож тиск лише посилює потік чорнила і лінія стає більш вологою та насиченою(~ 0,6 мм). 100% ці пера дополіровують додатково, тож гладко пише навіть зворотний бік, але на мій смак ця гладкість надмірно неприємна, як і у PenBBS.

The width of the ordinary line by the right side is – 0.4 mm. The reverse side gives a thinner line 0.3 mm wide. This nib is not even elastic, so the pressure only increases the flow of ink and makes the line wet and saturated (~ 0.6 mm). 100% of these nibs are additionally polished, so even the reverse side writes smoothly, but for my taste this smoothness is excessively unpleasant, as on PenBBS nibs.

В решті решт: дуже привабливий колір та текстура матеріалу як і загальна обробка, також незвичний цікавий дизайн який не нагадує ручки інших виробників, але деякі деталі зменшують враження та видають китайське походження. Ручка поршня зроблена з суттєвим люфтом та при русі поршня вона неприємно бовтається та деренчить. Чи можна таке собі уявити у Peliakan чи Montblanc? Перо як я і писав вище мені не сподобалось. Цікаво що поршневий механізм був без змащення натомість коли я розібрав перовий вузол то всередині були якісь соплі. До речі перо з фідером мають дуже маленьке тертя, витягнув не докладаючи зусиль. Натомість на відміну від Narwahl Schuylkill 365 Ebonite – запах ебоніту цієї ручки набагато менший і не такий різкий. З урахуванням того що я планую замінити перо вважаю себе задоволенням цим придбанням.

At the end: very attractive color and wood texture of the material as well as the general finish work, as well as an unusual and interesting design that does not resemble the pens of other manufacturers, but some details reduce the impression and give away the Chinese origin. The piston knob is made with a significant backlash, and when rotates knob, it dangles unpleasantly and rattles. Is it possible to imagine such a thing in Peliakan or Montblanc? As I wrote above, I did not like this oversmooth nib. It is interesting that this piston mechanism was without lubrication, but when I disassembled the nib unit, there were some gel inside. By the way, nib with feed has very little friction, I pulled it out without much effort. However, unlike Narwahl Schuylkill 365 Ebonite – the smell of ebonite in this pen is much smaller and not so sharp. Considering the fact that I plan to replace nib, I consider myself satisfied with this purchase.

ps: А, я ж обіцяв розповіси ще про перешкоди. Так ось коли я випадково потрапив на цю модель в цьому кольорі, я одразу вирішив написати до магазину з уточнюючими питаннями, включаючи чи в змозі компанія надіслати ручку до України. На жаль мені ніхто не відповів протягом тижня. Тоді я знайшов instagram компанії та написав їм у дірект. Я почекав ще тиждень, але знову жодної відповіді. Тодді я просто придбав ручку через Paypal. Через 5 днів мені прийшло повідомлення з PayPal, що моє замовлення скасовано без жодних пояснень та вибачень. І в решті решт я замовив ручку на адресу в США. Ось таки пригоди.

ps: Ah, I promised to says about obstacles. So when I accidentally saw in internet this model in this color, I immediately decided to write to the store with clarifying questions, including ability shipping to Ukraine. Unfortunately, no one answered me during the week. Then I found the company’s Instagram page and wrote to them in direct. I waited another week, but again no response. Then I just purchased this pen through PayPal. 5 days later I received a message from PayPal that my order was canceled with no explanation or apology. And at the end, I ordered pen to US address. Here are the adventures.

А ось так виглядають мої Narwhal разом:)). Пам’ятаю що мені важко було сфотографувати рожево-фіолетовий відтінок у Schuylkill, але коли на фотографії дві разом, мені здається це краще зрозуміти.

And this is how my Narwhal look like together:)). I remember having a problem for photographing the pinkish-purple hue in the Schuylkill for understanding, but when the two pens are in the picture together, I think I understand it better.
