Hello everybody! Today I have an unusual review. In general, I did not plan to buy and test this model, because it is quite expensive, and the size is too large for my hand, but it so happened that I ended up with body without nib and feed. Thanks to the responsiveness of Oliver_X on Reddit, who was the only person to respond to the community’s request for help with dimensions. I try to make a custom ebonite feed for this pen, which I want to share with you. Although the lack of an original nib does not harm the general overview and impressions.

Всім привіт! Сьогодні у мене незвичайний огляд. Взагалі я не планував купувати та тестувати цю модель, бо вона доволі коштовна, а розмір для моєї руки занадто великий, але так сталось що у мене опинився корпус без пера та фідера. Завдяки чуйності Oliver_X з Reddit, який єдиний хто відгукнувся на запит допомоги у суспільства з розмірами, я зробив експеримент зі створення індивідуального ебонітового фідера до цієї моделі, чим хочу поділитись з вами. Хоча відсутність оригінального пера ніяк не зашкодить і загальному огляду та враженням.

Sailor Profit 1911 King of Pen ST Black w|custom FPR nib and ebonite feed (made in Japan) 11-6001-x20

Власно, за формою, ручка(KOP) нічим не відрізняється від своїх сестер Sailor 1911 Large і Sailor 1911 Standard, та має сигароподібну форму з гостро закругленими кінцями, але має більш значний розмір. Матеріал корпусу  це смола чорного кольору яка світится червоним на просвіт. Система заправки – картріджно-конвертерна, свого пропрієтарного формату Sailor. Ковпачок на різбленні, різблення 2-х західне, закриття\відкриття за 1 та 3/4 обертів.

Actually, in terms of shape, this pen(KOP) is no different from its sisters, the Sailor 1911 Large and  Sailor 1911 Standard, and has a cigar-shaped form with taper rounded ends, but has the biggest size. The material of the body is a black resin that glows red in the backlight. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Sailor format. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closing/opening in 1 with 3/4 turns.

З прикрас ручка має позолочену фурнітуру та стандартний для Sailor кліп притаманний моделям Sailor Profit. Широке кільце має надпис SAILOR THE KING OF PEN 1911, що відзначає дату створення компанії. Я не знаю навіщо, але на відміну від стандартних моделей, King of Pen має подовжену втулку, мабуть, для кращого утримання картриджів або конвертерів, у який зроблені прорізи, щоб можна було бачити кількість чорнила що залишилось. Така конструкція не додає жодних переваг, але дуже незручна при промивці пера за допомогою гумової груші. Як і у молодших моделей на секції є гумове кільце для кращого утримання корпусу.

Of the decorations, the pen has gold-plated accents and standard Sailor clip typical lake in all Sailor Profit line. The wide ring has the inscription SAILOR THE KING OF PEN 1911, marking the company’s founding date. I don’t know why, but unlike the standard models, the King of Pen has an elongated sleeve, presumably to better hold the cartridges or converters, which has cutouts, so you can see how much ink is left. This design does not add any advantages, but it is very inconvenient when washing the pen with a rubber bulb. Like as younger models, there is also have rubber O-ring on the section for better body holding.

Ковпачок має внутрішній прихований ковпачок що запобігає висиханню пера. Секція всередині рівна, без жодних додаткових ключів, тож перо з фідером може розташовуватись у будь-якому положені.

The cap has an internal hidden cap that prevents the nib drying. The section inside is straight, without any additional keys, so the nib with feed can be mounted in any position.

Перо: в данному випадку перо немає значення тому що воно не орігінальне. Я ніколи не планував придбати цю модель але так сталось що вона у мене є, але без орігінального пера, тому я вирішив встановити перше перо яке потрапило на мої очи та відповідного розміру. Самі пера я оглядав в окремому пості, але до нього прийшлось зробити відповідний фідер, про що я напишу нижче.

The nib: in this case, the nib is not important because it is not original. I never planned to buy this model, but it so happened that I have it, but without the original nib, so I decided to install the first nib that caught my eye and was the right size. I reviewed these nibs in a separate post, but I had to make a suitable feed for it, which I described in addon.

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина у складеному стані – 147,8 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 128,3 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 15.3мм, в місці хвату – 12,7мм. Повна вага незаправленої ручки – 31,75гр(без  картріджу чи конвертера), а зі знятим ковпачком – 18,9гр.

Overall dimensions of tool: folded length – 147,8 mm, without cap – 128,3 mm. Body diameter – 15,3 mm, at the grip – 12,7 mm. The weight of pen is 31.75g (without installed cartridge or converter), and without cap – 18,9 g .

Хвилинки історії:
Чесно кажучи важко щось написати про історію цієї моделі яка має, можна сказати вже класичну форму. Про історію лінійки Profit/1911 я писав у пості Sailor Profit 21K (earlier version), але нагадаю що у 1981 році був створений 1911/Profit з використанням накопичених технологій і «ноу-хау» попередніх 70 років. Завдяки технології загартування металу наконечник пера мав делікатну гнучкість, забезпечуючи плавне письмо. Корпус ручки 1911/Profit мав чудовий баланс із пером і ідеально лягав на руку.

Стосовно моделей King of Pen, я не знайшов дати першого релізу, але припускаю що це сталось близько 2012-2013 року, не затримуючись після зміни дизайну до 100 річчю компанії. King of Pen це сама крупна ручка виробника, але цікаво що зараз випускається 2 окремих лінійки моделі: та що представлена у огляді зі смоли та більш коштовна версія з ебоніту. Модель зі смоли має позолочені кільця, а ебонітова модель виготовляється вручну по твердженню компанії, але я припускаю що так само як і у випадку з Pilot Custom 845, секція універсальна та зроблена зі смоли в обох варіантах.

Версія зі смоли має коди 11-6001 (золота фурнітура) and 11-9639 (срібляста фурнітура) та комплектується лише 21 Каратними перами розміру М (-4хх) та В (-6хх).  Ебонітові версії мають коди 11-7001(2) та 11-9704 відповідно до золотого чи срібного оформлення. Також випускаються ще більш коштовні версії з ебоніту с покриттям Уруші в кольорах Ivory(-х17), Black(-х20), Crimson Red(х30), Vermillion Orange, Blue(-х40), Lilac, Green(-х60) та Yellow.

Moments of history:
To be honest, it is difficult to write something about the history of this model, which has, one might say, a classic form. I wrote about the history of the Profit/1911 line in the post about Sailor Profit 21K (earlier version), but let me remind you that in 1981 the 1911/Profit was created using the accumulated technology and “know how“ of the previous 70 years. With the metal-tempering technology, the pen nib had delicate flexibility providing smooth writing performance. The 1911/Profit pen body had a great balance with the nib, and perfectly fitted the hand.

Regarding the King of Pen models, I couldn’t find the date of the first release, but I’m guessing it was around 2012-2013, not long after the company’s 100th design change. King of Pen is the largest pen of the manufacturer, but it is interesting that 2 separate lines of this model are now being produced: the one presented in this review made of resin and other is more expensive version made of ebonite. The resin model has gold(silver)-plated rings, while the ebonite model is hand-made body and cap, according to the company info, but I’m guessing that just like the Pilot Custom 845, the section is universal and made of resin in both versions.

The resin version has the codes 11-6001 (gold accents) and 11-9639 (silver accents) and comes with only 21K nibs in sizes M (-4xx) and B (-6xx). The ebonite versions are coded 11-7001(2) and 11-9704 respectively in gold or silver finishes. There are also even more expensive versions made of ebonite with Urushi coating in the colors Ivory(-x17), Black(-x20), Crimson Red(x30), Vermillion Orange, Blue(-x40), Lilac, Green(-x60), and Yellow.

Як я писав вище я ніколи не планував пробувати цю версію, тому що я знайомий з перами Sailor, а корпус за розмірами дуже схожий на Montblanc Meisterstuck 149, що для моєї руки не дуже комфортний.  Але за ради любові до перових ручок я не зміг встояти, щоб не спробувати цей експеримент.

As I wrote above, I never planned to try this model, because I am familiar with Sailor pens/nibs, and body size is very similar in size to Montblanc Meisterstuck 149, which is not very comfortable for my hand. But for the love to fountain pens, I couldn’t resist trying this experiment.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 1,1 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією в 0.3мм. Прямою стороною лінія волога та насичена, та завдяки єбонітовому фідеру не має рейок у будь-якому випадку.

 The line width by right side is 0.4 mm, and pressure allows to increase this line to 1.1 mm. The reverse side is written with a line of 0.3 mm. On the right side, the line is wet and juicy, and thanks to the ebonite feed, it has no rails in any case.

Що в підсумках: по перше мені хотілось би зауважити що вартість нової ручки занадто висока, на мій погляд, але як що вам подобаються великі розміри, фірмовий фідбек пер Salor та вартість не обтяжує ваш гаманець –  ви залишитесь задоволені. Якість виконання висока. Єдиний момент що мені не подобається/не зрозумілий, так це незручна подовжена втулка для картриджа, і відсутність “великого” конвертера для “великої” ручки, як це зроблено у Pilot з їхніми Con-70. Правда ви можете придбати поршневу версію цієї моделі у вигляді Montblanc Meisterstuck 149, яка вартує не набагато дорожче:)).

At the end: first of all, I would like to note that the cost of a new pen is too high, in my opinion, but if you like the oversized pens, the branded feedback Sailor nibs and the cost does not weigh on your wallet – you will be satisfied. The quality of execution is high. The only thing I don’t like/don’t understand is the awkward(for clean) elongated sleeve for the cartridge, and the lack of “big” converter for “big” pen like Pilot makes Con-70. However, you can buy a piston-filler version of this model in the form of Montblanc Meisterstuck 149, which is not much more expensive then KOP:)).

Як перше доповнення – фабричний продажний варіант. Коробка зовні виглядає як софттач, а всередині як текстиль.

As the first addon – a retail set. The outside of the box looks like a soft touch, and inside like a textile.

Цікаво що на цьому фото перо на 149 моделі виглядає непропорційно великим що до секції)).

It is interesting that in this photo the nib on 149 model looks disproportionately large compared to the section)).

У останньому доповнені традиційно ескіз, та сьогодні це Філіп Віннер — український актор «Чесного театру» який загинув на війни захищаючи Україну від російських окупантів. Малюнок з відео де він сидячи в окопі читає вірша Тараса Шевченка “Доля”.

In the last addon, is a traditional sketch, and today it is Philip Winner, was a Ukrainian actor of the “Honest Theater” who died during the war defending Ukraine from the russian invaders. A sketch from video where he is sitting in a trench and recites Taras Shevchenko’s poem “Fate”.

“Наш актор, Філіп Віннер назавжди в строю. З перших днів вторгнення Філіп захищав нашу землю в найгарячиших точках…. Та продовжував жити театром, на його сторінці побачите вірші з окопів, він привіз театр з собою на війну. Його вбила росія. Не пробачимо”,

Акторові мало б 9 липня виповнитися 32 роки. Філіп Віннер ще на початку повномасштабної війни вступив в лави ЗСУ та став на захист України від російських окупантів. Від грудня 2022 року захисник служив на передових позиціях Донецької області. Актор відомий тим, що під час служби записував емоційні відео, на яких читав поезію українських поетів.

The actor would have turned 32 on July 9. Even at the beginning of the full-scale war, Philip Winner joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and stood up to protect Ukraine from the russian invaders. From December 2022, the defender served in advanced positions in the Donetsk region. The actor is known for the fact that during his service he recorded emotional videos in which he read the poetry of Ukrainian poets.

Оскільки перо що я встановив в Sailor спочатку я кастомізовав для JoWo collar, то суто теоретично будь-яке перо розміру #6 (JoWo або Bock) повинно було працювати з моїм фідером. Тож я отримав запитання на перевірку від любителів пера. Сьогодні зранку я вирішив перевірити. Оскільки звичайного JoWo пера у мене немає я взяв перо з ручки Esterbrook яки ідуть без змін від JoWo. Все дуже легко встало на свої місця.

Because the nib I installed in this Sailor was originally customized for JoWo collar, theoretically any size #6 nib (JoWo or Bock) should work with this my feed. So I received a request for test this from FP lovers. This morning I decided to check. Because I don’t have standard JoWo nib, I use Esterbrook nib that comes unchanged from JoWo. Everything fell into place very easily.

Але мені не давали спокою деякі моменти з естетичної точки зору, тому я вирішив створити більш привабливу версію 2.0 мого фідера, трохи змінивши технологію виготовлення.

But I was troubled by some points from an aesthetic point of view, so I decided to create a more attractive version 2.0 of my feed, slightly changing the technology.

По закінченні я зібрав все до купи і перевірив заправивши ручку.

After finishing, I assembled everything and checked by filling the pen.

На відміну від попереднього фідера на цьому подача вже не волога, а нормально, хоча я не перевіряв її з флексовим пером. Але зважаючи на чорнила між ламелями фідеру можна припустити що і з флексовим пером теж не буде питань. Стартує миттєво, пропуски не робить.

Unlike the previous version, this one have normal flow, although I did not test it with flex nib. But considering tto he ink between lamellas of feed, I can assume that there will be no problems with flex nib either. No hardstarts, no skips.

Порівняння фідерів разом. У другої версії я зробив хвостову частину трохи більшою, щоб він далі заходив у конвертер\картридж. Кінчик доволі товстий тому не має бути проблем з пробиттям картриджів.

Comparison of feeds together. In the second version, I made the tail part a little longer so that it goes further into the converter\cartridge. The tail is quite thick, so there should be no problems with the cartridges inserts.

Update 29.07.2023:

Ще вирішив продовжити експеримент та зробити ще одного фідера із залишків вінтажного, до речі, ебоніту. Спочатку хотів зафільмувати процес, але потім так захопився що забув сфотографувати проміжні етапи. На жаль в процесі пошкодив один із збудованих інструментів для нарізання ламелів, тож подальші експерименти доведеться відкласти на деякий час, поки не збудую новий прилад.

I decided to continue my experiment and make another feed from the remains of vintage, by the way, ebonite. At start I wanted to film the process, but then I got so excited that I forgot to take pictures of the middle stages. Unfortunately, in the process I damaged one of the constructed my tools for cutting lamellas, so next experiments will have to be postponed for a while until I build a new tool.

Тож, цього разу версія нового фідеру Ver. 2.1, яка тільки зовнішньо формою зріза відрізняється від Ver. 2.0, але я вирішив використати модифіковане перо FPR dualtone Flex з доданим ефектом м’якості з попереднього посту.

So, this time the version of the new feed is Ver. 2.1, which differs only externally in the shape of exterior from Ver. 2.0, but I decided to use the modified FPR dualtone Flex nib with added softness from the earlier post.

Нажаль, я зробив не кращій вибір чорнила(Private Reserve Avocado) для тестування флексу, тож на вологій лініі з натиском отримав ялинку, але в цілому тест пройшов добре. Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.2 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 1,5 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією також в 0.2мм, але трохи сухіше.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make the best ink choice(Private Reserve Avocado) for the flex test, so I got a fur(feather) on the wet line with pressure, but overall the test went well. The line width by right side is 0.2 mm, and pressure allows to increase this line to 1.5 mm. The reverse side is written with a line of 0.2 mm, but little dryer.
