Hello! For a long time I wanted to try this model and compare it with the Custom 742, and now I finally have this opportunity. Unlike Sailor with their clear distinction between cigar-shaped 1911s and cylindrical flat-top ProGears, Pilot didn’t take the easy way to customers and decided to little confuse users with Custom and Custom Heritage lines.

Доброго дня! Давно хотів спробувати цю модель та порівняти її із 742 і ось нарешті маю таку нагоду. На відміну від Sailor з їх чітким розмежуванням сігароподібних 1911 та циліндричних ProGear, компанія Pilot не шукала легких шляхів та вирішила трохи заплутати користувачів із розведенням лінійок Custom та Custom Heritage.

Pilot Custom Heritage 912 w|Falcon nib (made in Japan) FKVH-2MR-B-FA

Heritage то є спадщина в перекладі, тож форма корпуса подібна до перших перових ручок – циліндрична с плоскими закінченнями. В цілому вона дуже схожа на моделі 91 та 92, але  також і на 845 та старшої Urushi. Корпус виповнено із смоли чорного кольору з хромованою фурнітурою. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерна, свого пропрієтарного формату Pilot. Ковпачок на різьблені, різблення 2х західне, відкриття/закриття за 1 1/4 обертів.

Heritage is a legacy, so the shape of the body is similar to the early fountain pens – cylindrical with flat ends. In general, it is very similar to the 91 and 92 models, but also to the 845 and top Urushi. The body is made of black resin with chromium-plated fittings. Filling system – cartridge-converter, its proprietary Pilot format. Cap on thread, 2-way threads, opening/ losing in 1 1/4 turns.

Елементи брендування присутні лише на ковпачку. На широке кільце нанесено Pilot Japan та CUSTOM HERITAGE 912.

Форма закінчень аналогічна до моделів 91, 92, 845/Urushi, а також схожа на Pilot Falcon/Elabo.

The shape of tops is similar to the 91, 92, 845/Urushi models, and also similar to the Pilot Falcon/Elabo.

Перо: золоте, 14 каратне, покрито родієм, середнього 10го розміру Pilot, таке саме як використовується у моделі Custom 742 FA. Поверхня пера без візерунків і має лише текст, им’я бренду Pilot, якість золота 14K585, розмір 10 та розмірність кінчика <FA>, тобто перо Falcon. Під текстом ліворуч розташована дата виробництва пера 923 – вересень 2023 року. Також у хвостовій частині перо має невеличкі вушки яки призначені для правільного розтошування пера на фідері. Це перо є гнучким, мабуть найгнучкішим серед сучасних золотих пер до авторучок.

The nib: solid gold, 14 carat, rhodium plated, middle 10th size Pilot, the same as used in Custom 742 FA model. The nib cover is clear and have just text, Pilot brand name, 14K585 gold quality, size 10 and tip dimension <FA>, ie Falcon nib. Below on the left is placed datecode of production 923 – September 2023. Also in the tail part of nib has small ears which are designed for correct mounting the nib on feed. This nib is flexible, perhaps the most flexible of modern solid gold fountain pen’s nibs.

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина у складеному вигляді – 140 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 12.9 мм, у місці хвату – 11 мм. Повна вага ручки – 20 г, а без ковпачка – 11 г.

Overall dimensions of the tool: folded length – 140 mm, without cap – 125 mm. Body diameter – 12.9 mm, at the grip – 11 mm. The total weight of pen is 20 g, and without cap it is 11 g.

Хвилинки історії:
Чесно кажучи я не знаю що написати що до історії цієї моделі, бо це достатньо сучасна розробка що підтверджує слово Heritage. Найраніший огляд що я бачив в інтернеті з пером FA датований 2016 роком, а загалом 912 моделі датований 2013 роком, то будемо вважати що це і є рік релізу. Хоча Амазон каже дату першого релізу як 24 вересня 2012 року.  До лінійки Heritage входить  на диво лише 3 моделі – Pilot Custom Heritage 91, Pilot Custom Heritage 92 та Pilot Custom Heritage 912. Перші дві моделі однакові за розміром як пера, так і корпуса, та відрізняються лише системою заправки: 91 модель має картриджно-конвертерну систему, а 92 – поршневу. Цікаво що чорна версія 91 може комплектуватися більшою кількістю пер – EF・F・SF・FM・SFM・M・SM・B・BB, у відмінності від 92 яка комплектується лише перами F・FM・M・B.  912 модель трохи більша, майже як 742 в порівнянні з 74,  та має пера 10 розміру і  окрім розмірностей до 91, має в своєму активі ще PO・FA・WA・SU・C・MS та конвертер CON-70. Трохи не зрозуміло чому до складу лінійки Heritage не входять дві найстарші моделі Custom 845 та Custom Urushi, бо мають такий самий дизайн крім фурнітури яка позолочена, а не хромована. Може “спадщина” це не про форму, а про колір? :))

Minutes of history:
Honestly, I do not know what to write about the history of this model, because it is quite a modern development and that confirms the word Heritage. The earliest review that I saw on the Internet with the FA nib was dated 2016, and in general, the 912 model review is dated 2013, so we will assume that this is the year of release. Although Amazon says the release date of first sale as September 24, 2012. The Heritage line includes 3 models – Pilot Custom Heritage 91, Pilot Custom Heritage 92 and Pilot Custom Heritage 912. The first two models are the same size as the nib and body, and differ only in filling system: 91 models have a cartridge-converter system and 92 – piston-filler. Interestingly, the black version 91 can be complect with more nibs – EF ・ F ・ SF ・ FM ・ SFM ・ M ・ SM ・ B ・ BB, unlike 92 which is complects only with F ・ FM ・ M ・ B. The 912 model is slightly larger, almost as 742 compared to 74, and has a nib size 10 and in addition to dimensions up to 91, it also can complects by PO ・ FA ・ WA ・ SU ・ C ・ MS and a CON-70 converter. It is not clear for me why the Heritage line does not include the two flagship models, the Custom 845 and Custom Urushi, because they have the same design except for accessories that are gold-plated and not rhodium-plated. Maybe “heritage” is not about shape, but about color? :))

Ця ручка потрапила до мене на налаштування оскільки мала хардстарти, внаслідок розюстування кінчиків та надмірної щілини. Після корекції була протестована.

This pen came to me for adjustment because it had hardstarts, due to an unaligned tip with gap between tines. After adjusting, it was tested.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить  – 0.4 мм(я не перевіряв яка лінія була спочатку).  Додавання помірного тиску дозволяє збільшити лінію до 0.9 мм. Зворотний бік має лінію – 0.3 мм. Подача волога обидвома сторонами, але попри вологу лінію флекс інколи утворює рейки, тож бажано замінити фідер на ебонітовий.

The width of ordinary line by the right side is – 0.4 mm I didn’t check how line is wide was before). Adding pressure allows to increase the line up to 0.9 mm. The reverse side is written by – 0.3 mm. Flow is wet by both sides, but despite the wet line, the flex sometimes did rails, so it is advisable to change feed on ebonite one.

Що в підсумках: на відміну від здібностей великих пер бути більш м’якими, у лінійці пер Falcon <10> розмір є більш м’яким ніж <15>. Що стосується різниці між 912 та 742, то її просто нема – це однакові ручки, відмінність лише у кольорах фурнітури та обрізаних кінчиках до пласких навершій. Але оскільки я віддаю перевагу натуральному кольору матеріалу я вибрав для себе 742 модель, хоча дизайн із пласкими навершями мені подобається більше ніж сигара. Тож тим хто хоче опанувати сучасну каліграфію цілком раджу обидві ці моделі, хоча мій досвід показує що пера Falcon часто мають проблеми поганого зведення із заводу.

At the end: unlike the big nibs’ ability to be softer, the Falcon <10> size is softer than the <15>. As for the difference between the 912 and 742, there is simply none – they are the same pens, the only difference is in the colors of the metal elements and cut ends to the flat top. But because I prefer the natural material’s color, I chose the 742 model for myself, although I like the flat top design much more than the cigar-shapes. So for those who want to learn modern calligraphy, I fully recommend both of these models, although my experience shows that these Falcon nibs often have problems of poor alignment from the factory.
