Hello everybody! Each more or less well-known modern brand of fountain pens has in its model line a model in honor of its nation or with national motifs. I have been thinking about something like this for a long time, but needed to find real identify of nation which good looks and harmoniously on the body surface. The answer to this question was somewhere in the around, but it didn’t catch in my head, and finally the most obvious thing was found by me – is our native Vyshyvanka (embroidery) ornaments. Then it took some more time to reproduce some of the patterns in a format suitable for put on cover. So let’s look at this first prototype)).

Я вже давно обміркував щось таке, але все гадав що гарно буде ідентифікувати нашу націю та гармонійно розташується на поверхні ручки. Відповідь вітала десь у повітрі, але не зупинялась у моїй голові та ось нарешті саме очевидне – це наша рідна вишиванка з її візерунками. Далі знадобився ще деякий час щоб відтворити деякі візерунки у придатному для нанесення форматі. Тож дивимось на перший млинець, сподіваюсь що не грудкою:))

Формою ручка являє собою циліндр із закругленими кінцями та виконана повністю з ебоніту SEM Classic Black який насправді темно-темно-коричневого кольору але після полірування виглядає чорним. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерна формату Інтернешнл (international) під конвертер Schmidt K6 з різбленням та має окремий ковпачок для ручки поршня. овпачок на різьблені, різблення двониткове, відкриття/закриття за 2.5 оберти.

The shape of this pen is a cylinder with rounded tops and is made entirely from SEM Classic Black ebonite which have dark dark brown color but when polished it looks like black. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of the international format to Schmidt K6 converter with thread and has a blind cap for piston knob.  Cap on thread, two-start thread, open/close in 2.5 turns.

На ковпачку використав два типу візерунка та розташував їх під кутом 90 градусів, але на корпусі використав лише один візерунок з протилежних боків оскільки корпус трохи тонкіший.

On the cap I used two ornaments types and placed them at 90-degree, but on the body I used only one ornament design from opposite sides because the body is a bit thinner.

Overall tool dimensions: folded length is – 138.5 mm, without cap – 125.5 mm, posted – 176 mm. The diameter of the body is – 13.5 mm, at the grip – 11.5 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 20.85 g (include Schmidt K6 converter), without cap – 12.5 g . 

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина складеного інструменту – 138.5 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125.5 мм, надягнутим на торець – 176 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 13.5 мм, у місці хвату – 11.5 мм. Вага складеного інструменту – 20.85 г(включно з конвертером Schmidt K6), зі знятим ковпачком – 12.5 г.

Особистої історії ні я, ні ручка ще не маємо. Єдине що можу сказати що захопився я перовими ручками у 2016 році, та майже одразу (після пів року досліджень та лагодження інших вінтажних ручок) я замріяв створити власну ручку. Час йшов, досвід з лагодження ручок зростав, а нагоди створення не формувалось. Але після російського вторгнення в Україну 2022 року, я вирішив що не варто більше відкладати мрію, бо в будь-який час може так статись що мрія стане недосяжною. Тож з літа 2023 року я почав докладати зусиль у цьому напрямку та набувати досвіду. Спочатку я зробив все необхідне до частини корпусу Delta який у мене залишився, потім я створив власний корпус до секції Pilot Falcon ураховуючи недоліки фабричного виконання, і ось нарешті придбавши перови вузли JoWo прийшла черга створити свою власну ручку “Tribute”)).

Neither I nor this pen have an own history yet. The only thing I can say is that I became interested in fountain pens in 2016, and almost immediately (after half a year of repairing and fixing other vintage pens) I dreamed of creating a pen by my own hands. Time passed, the experience in repairing pens grew, but the opportunity for creation did not arise. But after the russian invasion to Ukraine in 2022, I decided that I should not postpone my dream any longer, because at any time it can happen that the dream becomes unattainable. So, from the summer of 2023, I started to make efforts in this direction and gain experience. First, I made everything necessary to the Delta part body that I had left over from some pen, then I created my own body with cap to Pilot Falcon section, taking into account the shortcomings of the factory design, and finally, after purchasing JoWo nib units, it was time to create my own pen “Tribute”)).

На даний час я не акцентую увагу на пері та на його тестуванні(на відміну від моїх звичайних оглядів) бо це стандартне перо JoWo 6 розміру, але деякі приклади можна побачити у оглядах ручок “Tribute” або  “Tribute Visio”. Зараз акцентую увагу лише на дизайні.

I’m not focusing on the nib and testing it at this moment (unlike my usual reviews) because it’s a standard JoWo #6 nib unit, but some samples and testings you can see in the previous review of “Tribute”. or “Tribute Visio”. Now I’m just focusing on the fountain pen design.

Звісно що я ще розглядав класичний кольоровий варіант, але вирішив для прототипа зупинитись поки на монохромному візерунку, але буду радий вислухати вашу думку.

Of course, I still considered the native color version, but I decided use the monochrome version for the first prototype, but I will be glad to hear your opinion.

Дивно, але остання партія JoWo пер промаркованних як EF пишуть як розмір F з лінією в 0,4 мм прямою стороною та 0,3 мм ззоротною. Тож, для тих кому дійсно треба EF, доводится ще їх переналаштовувати/переточувати.

It is surprising, but the last batch of JoWo nib unit with EF nib writes as F size with 0.4 mm by right side and 0.3 mm by reverse side.

Ширина лінії прямої стороною складає – 0,9 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 0.3 мм при вертикальному ведені, лінія волога та соковита. Зворотна сторона дає лінію шириною 0,25 мм.

The width of the line by right side is 0.9 mm in horizontal direction and 0.25 mm in vertical direction, the line is quite wet. The reverse side gives a line with a width of 0.25 mm.

В решті: Я ортодоксальний правша, тому не розумію пер Архітект і не вмію їми користуватись, але це ніяк не заважає мені вміти іх робити)).

ps: Спочатку я зробив перо з параметрами 0.4х0.9х0.3(R), але потім вирішив ще зьілтшити контраст до параметрів 0.3×0.9×0.25(R), тому на  паперці вище є додаткова строка update.

At the end: I am orthodox right-handed writer, so I don’t understand Architect nib and I don’t know how to use them, but this does not prevent me from being able to do them)).

ps: At first I made a nib with properties 0.4×0.9×0.3(R), but then I decided to increase contrast and more ground this nib to properties 0.3×0.9×0.25(R), so there is an additional line update on the test’s paper above.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною складає – 0.15 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє трохи збільшити подачу, і лінія стає 0.4 мм. Зворотна сторона дає лінію 0.4 мм, і в цьому і полягає концепт Drawing nib. Тобто основна сторона дає можливість робити тонку лінію та штриховку, а зворотній бік дає можливість заповнювати простір, але не швидко.

The width of the ordinary line by the right side is – 0.15mm, while the pressure allows to slightly increase the flow and the line becomes 0.4mm. The reverse side gives the line a  – 0.4 mm,, and this is what the Drawing nib concept is all about. That is, the main(right) side makes thin line and shading hatching, and the reverse side makes it possible to fill the space, but not fast.

В решті: Цей грінд не є чимось особливим чи унікальним, але я його назвав Drawing nib, тому що їм зручно користуватись саме для малювання. Він дозволяє зручно малювати надтонкою лінією прямою стороною, і міг би називатись Needlepoint, але на відміну від Needlepoint має більш широкий зворотній бік. Але за рахунок того що зворотним боком перо притискаєтся до фідера, ця лінія не може бути вологою, тому заповнювати простір можна лише повільно, інакше чорнило не встигає подаватись до кінчика.

At the end: This nib isn’t something special or unique, but I’ve named it the Drawing nib because it’s comfortable same for drawing. It allows to draw a super thin line by right side, and could be called Needlepoint, but unlike Needlepoint, it has a wider reverse side. But due to the fact that the reverse side is pressed against the feed, this line cannot be wet, so can fill the space only slowly, otherwise the ink will not have time to filled the slit of the tip.

А ось так виглядає мій стан після чергового мого поста в очікуванні ваших фідбеків, але, зазвичай, очікування марне)). На справді це робота André Hemstedt під назвою “The Art of Waiting” яку він виконав для A. Lange & Söhne.

Коротке резюме: в тонкому пері чорнила виглядають трохи сухуватими і доволі швидку сохнуть на тонкому кінчику, то бажано довго не думати над наступними штрихами. Дивним чином, я поки не зрозумів цю хімію, але лінія із під пера, інколи, виходить темно-зеленого кольору, а інколи оливкового. Як що лінія щільна чи мокра вона має смарагдовий відблиск. Це мені нагадує Organics Studio Niitrogen, але без жахливих наслідків, бо звичайною рукою це чорнило начебто не мажеться. Хоча фідер і частку секції при заправці пофарбувало, але цей відблиск потім відмився водою, а на пальцях наслідків не було. Зазвичай я не люблю смарагдові кольори, але цей мені сподобався, бо смарагдовий лише відблиск, а саме чорнило приємного темно-зеленого теплого відтінку. Треба буде придбати при нагоді:))

A short summary: in a thin nib, the ink looks a little dry with fast drying on thin tip, so it is better not to think about the next strokes for a long time. Strangely, I haven’t got this chemistry yet, but the line under the nib sometimes comes out dark green and sometimes olive. No matter how thick or wet the line is, just sometimes green and sometimes olivine)), but wet line will have emerald sheen. It reminds me of Organics Studio Nitrogen, but without the terrible consequences, because by normal hand this ink does not seem to smear. Although the feed and part of the section were colored during filling from the sample, this reflection was then washed off by water, and there were no trails on the fingers. I usually don’t like emerald colors, but I liked this one because the emerald is just a shine, the ink itself is a nice dark green with warm shade. I think, I will be purchase this ink by occasion:))

Це майже однакові фото зроблені з різницею в секунду лише з нахилом в 5-15 градусів між собою, щоб спіймати відблиск.

These are almost identical photos taken at the same moment just with an inclination of 5-15 degrees between them.

Отримав замовленя на переточку пера Schmidt, але оскільки я не маю жодної ручки під цей перовий вузол, я вирішив зробити секцію під Tribute Vyshyvanka для тестування.

Received an order for regrind Schmidt nib, but because I don’t have any pen for this nib unit, I decided to make a section for my Tribute Vyshyvanka for comfortable testing.

Через те що перовий вузол має трохи інакшу конструкцію, посадка конвертера Schmidt стала на 1 мм довше через що утворилась щілина між секцією та корпусом ручки. Це легко виправити, але я не став цього робити, тому що це разовий проєкт, лише для перевірки роботи пера.

Due to the fact that this nib unit has a slightly different design, the fit of the Schmidt converter became 1 mm longer, which created a gap between section and main body. It’s an easy fix, but I didn’t do it because it’s a one-time project, just to comfort testing grounded nib.

Оригинальне перо писало дуже гладко і волого, прямою стороною 0.6 мм, а зворотною 0.4 мм.

The original nib wrote very smoothly and wet, by right side line of 0.6 mm, and reverse side of 0.4 mm.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає – 0,2 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 0.7 мм при вертикальному ведені, за нормальної подачі. Натиск дозволяє збільшити вертикальну лінію лише до 1.0 мм. Зворотна сторона пише лінією 0.4 мм на 0.7 мм, що дорівнює її до Stubbish B, але подача дуже мала тому лінія доволі прозора та стоньшуєтся з часом до повної відсутності. Ковзання гладке ободвома сторонами.

The reverse side writing the line is 0.4 mm on 0.7 mm, which equals it to Stubbish B, but the flow is very small, so the line is quite transparent and thins more overtime until it is completely absent. Glide is smooth by both sides.

At the end, it is traditional to test this nib, and today it is Christmas theme with “The Legend of the Candy Cane”.

The Legend of the Candy Cane

A Candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would help us remember who Christmas is really about. So he made a Christmas Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the virgin birth and sinless nature of Jesus. Hard candy to symbolize the solid rock, the foundation of the Church, and firmness of the promises of God. The candymaker made the candy in the form of a “J” to represent the name of Jesus. It also represented the staff of the “Good Shepherd”. The candymaker then included red stripes. He used three small stripes and a large red stripe to represent the suffering Christ endured at the end of his life. The candy became known as a Candy Cane a decoration seen at Christmas time. The meaning has faded, but still gives joy te children young and old, whom Jesus loves and treasures.

Кілька тижнів тому отримав персональне замовлення зробити Tribute Vyshyvanka із секцією під перо Sailor 1911 Standard/PGS. Щоб не переносити невиконані завдання на наступний рік, публікую тут і зараз.

A few weeks ago I received a personal request to make a Tribute Vyshyvanka to Sailor 1911 Standard/PGS nib. In order not to move unfinished tasks to next year, I am publishing this work here and now.

Секцію зробив використовуючи конвертер Schmidt K6 із невеликими модіфікаціями.

The section was made for Schmidt K6 converter with minor mod.

Тестувати чорнилом ручку не став, бо перо моє і не буде відправлено раом із ручкою, але протестував водою наповнювання конвертера – працює добре.

I did not test this pen by ink, because nib is mine and will not be sent together with body, but I tested filling this system (converter) with water – it works well.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає – 0,2 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 0.85 мм при вертикальному ведені, за нормальної подачі. Натиск дозволяє збільшити вертикальну лінію лише до 1.0 мм. Зворотна сторона пише лінією 0.5 мм на 0.85 мм, майже як Stubbish BB, але подача меньша тому лінія не така насичена, але надзвичайно гладка.

Отримав замовлення на переточку пера Esterbrook (JoWo) EF у Needlepoint, тож для тесту обрав саме власну ручку, але оскільки всі закінчились, взяв прототип:))

Received request to grinding the Esterbrook (JoWo) EF nib to Needlepoint, so I chose my pen for testing, but because all finished is sold out, I took the earlier prototype :)).

Початково перо писало розміром 0.35 мм прямою стороною та 0.3 мм зворотною, при чому прямою стороною перо писало волого та мало суттєвий фідбек, навіть більший ніж у Сейлор. На зворотній стороні фідбек був відсутній, але перо відчутно шкрябало.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною складає – 0.15 мм як що писати повільно та 0.1 мм при штриховці, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 0.5 мм. Зворотна сторона дає лінію 0.15 мм. У перший ітерації лінія була 0.1 мм навіть при повільному ведені, але мені здалось що лінія занадто суха тому я збільшив потік і в решті лінія стала 0.15 мм.

Initially, the nib wrote 0.35 mm by right side and 0.3 mm by reverse, but right side wrote wet and had significant feedback, even greater than Sailor. There was no feedback on the reverse side, but nib scratched noticeably.

The width of the ordinary line by the right side is – 0.15mm when write slowly and 0.1 mm for hatching/fast writing, while the pressure allows to increase this line to 0.5mm. The reverse side gives the line a  – 0.15 mm. In the first iteration, the line was 0.1 mm even by slow writing, but I thought the line was too dry, so I increased flow and the rest of the line was 0.15 mm.

Навіть невеличкий флекс починає “грати” на такий тонкій лінії, що може бути непогано для Спенсеріан практики на гарному папері.

Even a small flex will be noticeable on such a fine line, so that it can be not bad for Spencerian practice on good paper.

Зверху лінія оригінального пера, знизу переточеного. Як що використовувати високоякісний папір від Rhodia, Tomoe River, Clairefontaine або подібних то лінія буде ще тонша, тому що папір має значення.

Above is original nib line, below line after ground. If use high quality paper from Rhodia, Tomoe River, Clairefontaine or like, the line will be even thinner because the paper matters.

На завершення традиційно ескіз, давно хотів спробувати щось намалювати надтонкими лініями, так би мовити, попрактикуватись у тонуванні, але навіть мої тонкі пера для цього занадто товсті для А4 формату, а всі попередні Needlepoint’и що я робив були для мене неприємно гострі, то я повертав їх до UEF. Це перо вийшло настільки гарним що аж шкода його повертати власнику:)) Шуткую, але перо дійсно вийшло дуже добрим.

До речі: розхід чорнила настільки невеликий, що весь скетч я зробив лише за два занурювання пера на половину у чорнило, і там ще добряче так залишилось на пописати коли промивав:))

At the end, traditionally, a sketch. So, for a long time I wanted to try to draw something by ultra-thin lines, so to speak, for shading practice, but even my UEF nibs are too thick for thin shading on A4 format for this, and all my previous Needlepoints were unpleasantly crispy for me, so I returned them to UEF. This nib turned out so good that it’s a pity to return it to the owner:)) Just kidding, but this nib really turned out very very good and pleasant.

BTW: the consumption of ink is so small that I drew this sketch in just two dips on half of nib in ink and there was still something left to write more:))

Розумію що на такому масштабі не дуже помітна якість штриховці, але можете повірити мені “на слово” як досвідченому користувачеві що воно дуже файне:))

I understand that the quality of hatching/shading is not very noticeable on such a scale, but you can take my word for it as an experienced user that it is very nice:))
