(ground to Italic modern) Kilk Epigram

Today, this won’t be a long read, but rather a quick intro. This is a modern brand of Istanbul craftsmen who are passionate fountain pen creating.

Сьогодні це не буде довгий огляд, а швидше легке знайомство. Це сучасний бренд майстрів Стамбула які захоплюються створенням ручок.

Kilk Epigram Orion w|JoWo #6 BB nib (made in Turkey)

Форма ручки являє собою сигару із загостреними кінцями та складає із 3х частин: ковпачка, корпуса та секції. Я не знаю як називається цей колір, але швидше за все він не має назви, бо це штучне виробництво і відтворити такий самий просто неможливо. В складі текстури присутній синій, блакитний та золотистий пігменти. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерна, формату інтернешнл, ручка комплектується конвертером Шмідт К6 на різбленні. Ковпачок також на різбленні, закриття/відкриття за 1.5 обертів, різьба із 4-ма нитками.

The shape of this pen is a cigar with tapered ends and consists of 3 parts: cap, body and section. I don’t know what this color is called, but most likely it has no name, because it is artificial production and it is simply impossible to reproduce the same one. The texture contains blue, cyan and yellow/gold pigments. The filling system is cartridge-converter of international format, the pen is equipped with Schmidt K6 converter on thread. The cap is also threaded, closing/opening in 1.5 turns, thread with 4 starts.

Я не впевнений в матеріалі з якого виготовлена втулка секції, але сірий колір нагадує мені титан, хоча я можу і помилятись і логічно було припустити що це сплав нержавіючої сталі із таким кольором. Згідно з опису на сайті, корпус прикрашений кільцем із стерлінгового срібла, хоча тавра на ньому відсутні. На ковпачку є дивна сходинка в основі, яка натякає що початково там планувалось кільце, а потім з якихось причин від нього відмовились.

I’m not sure what the section sleeve is made of, but the gray color reminds me of titanium, although I could be wrong, and it rather and logical to assume that it is a stainless steel alloy with that color. According to the description on offsite, the decorated ring made of sterling silver, although there are no marks on it. The cap has a strange step at the base, which hints that a ring was originally planned there, but then for some reason it was abandoned.

Перо: це типовий, сучасний, перовий вузол JoWo #6 із чистим пером. Перо має маркування на правій стороні розмірності кінчика ВВ, та вигравійований лазером логотип бренду Kilk.

The nib: This is a typical, modern, JoWo #6 nib unit with clean nib. The nib has mark BB on the right side of tip dimension, and laser engraved brand logo Kilk.

Хоча ці ручки представлені в кількох онлайн магазинах письмових приладів, бренд має власний сайт на якому описані їх цілі, кредо, і актуальні моделі.

Although these pens are available in several online stationery stores, the brand has its own website that describes their goals, direction, and actual models.

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина у складеному вигляді – 141 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 126 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 15,25 мм, у місці хвату – 12.6 мм. Повна вага ручки – 23.9 г (без картриджа чи конвертера), а без ковпачка – 17.2 г.

Overall dimensions of the tool: folded length – 141 mm, without cap – 126 mm. Body diameter – 15,25 mm, at the grip – 12.6 mm. The total weight of pen is 23.9 g (exclude cartridge or converter), and without cap it is 17.2 g.

Ручку мені надали для переточування пера на м’який, курсивний Італік. Після виконання завдання я не планував тестувати ручку малюнком, думав протестувати лише текстом, але в решті зробив ескіз, і навіть не одним кольором)).

I was given this pen to grinding nib into Soft Cursive Italic. After completing the task, I didn’t plan to test nib by drawing, I thought I would test nib just writing, but in the end I made a sketch, and not even with one color)).

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає – 0,3 мм при горизонтальному ведені та 1.0 мм при вертикальному ведені. Зворотна сторона пише трохи прозоро із шириною лінії 0.65 х 1.0 мм.

The width of the line by right side has 0.3 mm in horizontal direction and 1.0 mm in vertical direction. The reverse side has little transparency line with 0.65 x 1.0 mm line width.

Що в решті: мені не дуже подобаються акрилові корпуси, але цей виглядає привабливо. Як що не приглядатись то я би назвав цей корпус Van Gogh “The starry night”, але золотий пил (блискавки) у жовтому робить його більш сучасно-попсовим. Механічно корпус зроблений дуже якісно, різблення всі акуратні, тож до якості жодних претензій. Візерунок кільця, на мій погляд, більше дотичний піратам, хоча може це я початково помилково почав асоціювати колір із Ван Гогом, а автори закладали зовсім іншу ідею, наприклад Карибське узбережжя.

ps 24.05.2025: Власник надав точну назву моделі, тож можу доповнити що колір навіяний сузір’ям Оріон. Ручка створена у співпраці із @pensandturquoisebrown та виготовлена із матеріалу створеного Джонатаном Бруксом з Carolina Pen Company та будується на дизайні Epigram від Kilk.

Візерунок натхненний туманністю Оріона, відображає суть приголомшливої небесної хмари з газу та пилу. Він світиться глибокими індиго та опівнічними синіми кольорами, де розсіяне зоряне світло та іонізований кисень створюють містичне сяйво. М’яка зелень від викидів кисню органічно зливається з космічним простором, а блискучі білі відтінки з кластера Трапеції висвітлюють закручений газ у його серці. Ледь помітні жовті відтінки, що відбиваються від далекого пилу, завершують цю композицію.

What at the end: I don’t really like modern acrylic bodies, but this one looks attractive. If it didn’t look closely, I would call this texture as Van Gogh “The starry night”)), but the gold dust (shimmer particles) in the yellow makes it more modern-pop. Mechanically, all parts are made very high-quality, the all threads are neat, so no complaints about quality. The ring pattern, in my opinion, is more related to “pirates”, although maybe I initially mistakenly began to associate this color texture with Van Gogh, and the authors had a completely different idea, for example Caribbean beach and sea.

ps 24.05.2025: The owner provided the exact name of this model, so I can add that the color is inspired by the constellation Orion. This pen making in coloboration with @pensandturquoisebrown in a blank created by Jonathon Brooks of Carolina Pen Company and based on the Epigram from Kilk.

The texture pattern, inspired by the Orion Nebula, captures the essence of a stunning celestial cloud of gas and dust. It glows with deep indigos and midnight blues, where scattered starlight and ionized oxygen create a mystical radiance. Soft greens from oxygen emissions blend seamlessly into the cosmic expanse, while brilliant whites from the Trapezium Cluster illuminate the swirling gas at its heart. Faint yellows, reflecting off distant dust, complete these composition.
