Parker Duofold Senior

I did not plan to do a personal review of this pen, because 8 years ago I already did a review on similar one, but at the end I decided to do it.

Не планував робити окремий огляд на цю ручку, бо 8 років тому вже робив огляд на схожу, але врешті решт вирішив зробити.

Parker DUOFOLD Senior (made in Canada) ~1930

Дизайн ручки виглядає як перехідний від перших моделей Duofold до Streamlined Duofold. Інструмент виконаний у класичному дизайні із чорного целлулоїду із ебонітовою секціє. Судячи за все ручка була трохи втомленою та була продана не реставратором ручок, а просто антікваром який додатково відполірував корпус для привабливості. Система заправки — кнопкова — button filler, класична для Parker того часу, сама кнопка виконана з латуні. Ковпачок на різьблені в 3 нитки, закриття/відкриття за 1 та 1/5 обертів.

The pen design looks like a transitional between early first Duofold to Streamlined Duofold. The pen is made from black celluloid with hard rubber section, in oversize design. Apparently the pen was a bit tired and was sold not by a pen restorer, but simply by an antique dealer who additionally polished the body for attractiveness. The filling system is button filler – classic for Parkers of that era, with the button made of brass. The cap on thread in 3-starts, closing/opening in 1 and 1/5 turns.

Я трохи реставрував press-bar иа імпринт щоб його було легче читати: Geo S Perker PARKER DUOFOLD Made in Canada — це версія імпринту яка з’явилась після 1930 року, на що вказують і ворма наверший і більш зглажена секція. Цікави ще виглядає той факт що на відміну від ранніх версій, в цьому секція на терті а не різбленні, і відповідно у корпусі зроблено кільце в яке впираєтся press-bar щоб запобігти виштовхування секції із корпусу. На press-bar зазначено що він саме для такого типу секцій: for slip section pen.

I slightly restored the press-bar and body imprint to make it easier to read: Geo S Perker PARKER DUOFOLD Made in Canada. This a version of the imprint that appeared after 1930, as Streamlined design of tops and the more smoothed section. Also interesting is the fact that, unlike the earlier versions on threads, this section is mounted on friction and accordingly, a additional ring is made in the body against which the press-bar rests to prevent the section from being pushed out of the body. On the press-bar it is indicated that it is for this type of section: for slip section pen.

Перо: золоте, величезне перо (приблизно 7 розміру), на яке нанесено: PARKER DUOFOLD Manifold Pen Canada. Позначки каратності нема але відомо що це були 14К пера. Так само як зараз сучасні виробники не вміють робити гнучкі пера, в ті часи виробники не вміли робити золотий сплав більш жорстким, тому вони робили товщину матеріала більшою. Це перо має неймовірну товщину пера 0.86мм та відповідну вагу в 1.12 г.

The nib: a solid gold, huge nib (approximately #7 size) imprinted as: PARKER DUOFOLD Manifold Pen Canada. There is no karat marking but it is known that these were 14K nibs. Same as modern manufacturers are not know how to make good flexible nibs, in those days manufacturers don’t knew how to make gold alloy more rigid, so they made the material thicker. This nib has an incredible nib thickness of 0.86 mm and a corresponding weight of 1.12g.

Overall pen dimensions: folded length is – 130.6 mm, without cap – 125 mm. The diameter of the body is – 13.3 mm, at the grip – 10.7 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 21 g, without cap – 13,6 g .

Найповнішу інформацію про розвиток компанії та цього модельного ряду можна прочитати на сайті parkerpens.net. Я лише стисло перенесу опис зі свого раннього посту. Серія Дуофолд з’явилася на світ в 1921 році, як подальше продовження дуже якісної лінійки Lucky Curve (нова фідерна концепція) з Jack Knife (нова концепція ковпачка у ковпачку, як ножни). Ці ручки досить швидко здобули популярність на ринку і стали чи не найдорожчими представниками масового виробництва ручок. У 1922 році на світ з’явилися зменшені копії перших Дуофолдів Lady та Junior. На той момент Паркер продавав близько 150 різних варіантів ручок. Невеликий редизайн відбувся у 1923-1924 рр. і відрізнявся зменшеним кільцем на ковпачку, а також зміненим написом на барелі: логотип Дуофолд був зменшений нарівні з Лакі Керв, який, як і раніше, залишався на своєму місці. Наступна зміна напису відбулася в 1926 році, коли напис Duofold був знову зменшений (small imprints) і став програвати напису Lucky Curve. Пізніше в 1929 році дизайн ще раз зазнав змін і це стосувалося золотих смужок ковпачка, які були замінені на кілька тонших (2 та 3) + деякі модифікації довжин (+-). А ще пізніше в 1930 р. з логотипу було прибрано знаменитий банер “Lucky Curve” і залишився лише напис: geo.s parker PARKER DUOFOLD made in ….

A minute of history:
The most complete information about the history of the brand and this model line can be read on the website parkerpens.net. I’ll just recap the short info from my earlier post. The Duofold series was born in 1921 as a continuation of the very high quality Lucky Curve line (new feeder concept) with the Jack Knife (new un-leacked cap concept). These pens quickly gained popularity in the market and became almost the most expensive representatives of mass production of pens. In 1922, smaller models of the first Lady and Junior Duofolds were born. At the moment, Parker was selling about 150 (!!!) different pens. A small redesign took place in 1923-1924 and featured a smaller ring on the cap, as well as a modified inscription on the barrel: the Duofold logo was reduced to the level of Lucky Curve, which still remained in place. The next change in the inscription occurred in 1926, when the Duofold inscription was again reduced (small imprints) and has smaller then Lucky Curve inscription. Later in 1929, the design underwent further changes and this concerned the gold stripes of the cap, which were replaced by slightly thinner ones (2 and 3) + some length modifications (+ -). And later, in 1930, the famous banner “Lucky Curve” was removed from the logo and only the inscription remained: geo.s parker PARKER DUOFOLD made in ….

Ця ручка була мною повністю обслугована, перо налаштовано та відполіровано, після повністю протестована.

This pen was fully serviced by me, the nib was adjusted and polished, then fully tested.

Товщина лінії прямою стороною становить 0,5 мм, натиск збільшує цю лінію лише до 0,7 мм. Зворотний бік пише шириною 0,4 мм. Після корекції це перо пише дуже гладко обома сторонами.

Ordinary line width by right side is 0.5 mm; pressure increases this line only to 0.7 mm. The reverse side writes with width about 0.4 mm. After adjusting this nib writes very smooth by both sides.

В решті: для прихільників історічних та іконічних моделей із великими та гладкими перами. Але мені більше довподоби більш ранній(початковий) варіант дизайну:)) І ще мені не сподобалася ця конструкція заправочного механізму.

At the end: for fans of historical and iconic models with huge and smooth nibs in oversized body. But I like the earlier (started) version of Duofold design more :)) And I didn’t like this design of the filling mechanism.

Parker DUOFOLD Senior (made in USA) ~1930

Зовнішній вигляд, дизайн, габаріти, матеріали такі ж самі, відмінність скдаддає лише імпринт на корпусі та кліпі і, власне, перо.

The appearance, design, dimensions, and materials are the same, the only difference is the inscription on the body, earlier clip imprint and the nib.

Я теж трохи реставрував імпринт щоб його було легче читати: Geo S Perker PARKER DUOFOLD Made in USA. Фідер вже не Lacky Curve, але все ще у формі ялинки.

I slightly restored the body imprint also to make it easier to read: Geo S Perker PARKER DUOFOLD Made in USA. The feed is no longer a Lucky Curve, but is still in the shape of a pine tree.

Перо: золоте, величезне перо (приблизно 7 розміру), на яке нанесено: PARKER DUOFOLD Pen B. Не заміряв ні товшину, ні вагу цього пера, як того що зверху, але воно виглядає доволі типово, хоча за відчуттям воно теж жорстке, але трохи пружне. Стосовно літер на пері, є ось така інформація:

P = standart for USA Parker-made nibs
C = the Canadian factory in Toronto
N = Newhaven, England
D = Denmark
B = a nibmaker such as Barrett, or Beyer & Hayes

The nib: a solid gold, huge nib (approximately #7 size) imprinted as: PARKER DUOFOLD Pen B. I didn’t measure the thickness and weight of this nib, like the Manifold one, but it looks enough typical, although it also feels hard, but a bit springy. Regarding the letters on the imprint I saw information above.

After restored and adjusting this pen was fully tested.

Товщина лінії прямою стороною становить 0,7 мм, натиск збільшує цю лінію лише до 1,0 мм. Зворотний бік пише шириною 0,4 мм. Після корекції це перо пише дуже гладко обома сторонами.
