This is my first review of a vintage Kaweco. Although it is not a model from the beginning of history, it is still an interesting specimen of the 50s period.

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK  (made in Germany) ~1950

The pen design has features of designs of its time, although it vaguely resembles pens of an little earlier period. This model has a vase section and a celluloid body, although some parts are cast molded from plastic (the piston bushing has a characteristic seam). The filling system is piston-filler with a knob as extension of the body like the Pelikan and Montblanc models. The cap on thread with 2-start thread, closing/opening in 2 turns.

The body has the imprint COLLEG and Kaweco-Fabricat, and on the back is the number 112 (I don’t know what this is), the piston bushing has the model number 55 and the nib size mark MK (Mittelfein Kugel). The cap has a ring and clip with the KaWeCo brand logo.

Minutes of history:
Kaweco began in 1883 as the Heidelberger Federhalter Fabrik (Heidelberg Fountain Pen Factory), founded by the gentlemen Luce and Enßlen of Heidelberg. They were engaged in the production of wooden holders and dip steel nibs for them. In 1889, salesmen Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber bought the factory and renamed it “Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik Koch, Weber & Compagnie” (later KaWeCo at the first letters). In 1903, the company had 25 workers producing black ebonite safety pens (BCHR – BlaCk Hard Rubber) with the names Perkeo, Omega and Kaweco with HF imprint – Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik (fountain pen factory in Heidelberg). The company purchased nibs for these pens in the USA from A. Morton & Co (New York). The company registered its first patent for a fountain pen in 1909 under the number 224101 D.R.G.M. The popularity of the brand grew very quickly and in 1913 the company had offices in Europe (Berlin, Paris, Zurich, Vienna), South America and Russia. In the same year, the company presented probably its most famous model – the Kaweco-Sport – a very compact hard rubber fountain pen originally intended for officers and sportsmen.
Due to the growing demand and popularity, in 1914 the management decided to buy the equipment and the rights to the production of nibs from the oldest company in New York and its partner – A. Morton & Co. and move all producing machines to Heidelberg. Along with the producing machines, American nibmakers are coming to Germany to train local staff – the first Germany nibmakers Hermann Böhler (later together with his brother Georg founded the Osmia company) and Peter Rupp (later also founded his company Georg Peter Rupp with the imprint “lion’s head”). From that moment on, the company performs the full production cycle from the bodies to the nibs themselves. In 1921 Kaweco was reorganized into a limited company. Kaweco had an annual production of 130,000 fountain pens and had 600 employees, which will increase to 1,200 by 1925. It is not known for certain what happened later and why the company began to suffer losses (the global crisis began later), but this was probably due to the fact that a number of leading engineers left the company and started their own business. In 1929 the company was declared bankrupt as the result of which another company, Badische Federhalterfabrik Knust, Grube & Woringen (KWG), acquired part of the equipment with patents and rights to the KAWECO brand, later reorganize to Kaweco Badische Füllhalterfabrik, Worringen & Grube. Friedrich Grube owner and main manager takes over at the helm of Kaweco for the next 30 years. It was
in 1930 the new KA WE CO logo was developed, divided into three parts, which we know to this day.

During World War II, a shortage of raw materials and manpower almost led to a complete halt in production, but nevertheless, on October 30, 1945, a few months after the end of the WWII, Kaweco was able to resume production. On May 5, 1960, Friedrich Grube (Sr.) died at the age of 63 and the company was headed by his son Wilhelm. Under his leadership, the design of the assortment was modernized and made thinner and more streamlined according to thrend of this time, but this did not allow the company to survive with the onset of the “ballpoint era” and in 1970 the company was forced to stop production. The members of the Grube family manage to keep the brand, machine tools and patents in their possession, and together with a few employees, they resume production in 1971 with announce a new Sport model with special Olympic coin to the XX Olympic Games in Munich(1972). The latest model of Sport was a cartridge filling system, is supplied for advertising purposes at the Deutsche Bundespost, but in 1981 Kaweco finally ceased operations.

In 1994, the cosmetics company Gutberlet GmbH from Nuremberg buys out the rights to the Kaweco name and trademark and relaunches production with a new Sport model inspired by the 1935 design. The assortment includes: fountain pens, rollers, ballpoint pens, mechanical and clutch pencils. The well-known company Diplomat was chosen as a partner. However, in 1999, Diplomat was acquired by another German company, Herlitz, which resulted in the termination of the partnership. Since that time, Kaweco has independently developed its business, representing it in more than 50 countries.

This pen was sent to me for servise and replacement of the old piston cork head because it did not hold ink. In the end, I decided not to make new cork piston head but remake piston mechanism to new O-ring which I made specifically for the appropriate size. When everything was done, it turned out that the body had a crack, so I had to repair the body too. But after all my works, this pen works without any problems.

Ordinary line width by right side is 0.5 mm; pressure increases this line only to 0.9 mm. The reverse side writes with width about 0.4 mm.

At the end: At first I was impressed by how smooth and soft this little nib writes, but during testing I realized that this pen is not for me. I don’t like oversmooth nibs without feedback, when don’t feel friction and don’t feeling if you’ve touched the paper or not yet. But otherwise it’s a very nice historical model despite the small size.

Update 08.09.2026:

It’s a kind of experience of ingratitude.

Not wanting to thank me for the repairer job the pen, the owner, instead, decided to humiliate me and accuse me of destroying his unsurpassed instrument, which was in “perfect condition” before, although it was not able to write. Despite the fact that before sending him pen, I warned that old pens are unpredictable, the materials are fragile, especially vintage celluloid, and anything from cracks to other defects can happen, to which the owner replied that it doesn’t bother him much, the main thing is that the pen writes, and this is his main goal.

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK. Lenskiy.org

Translate:
Owner: yes, this is an inexpensive pen, but sometimes it happens that inexpensive things cost a lot to their owners. it was a beautifully preserved piece of history, for me it was of great importance. this pen came to me in perfect condition, even with instructions, I loved it very much. what you did is simply a desecration of something beautiful. not only did you break the body like that, but you also assembled it with dirt, some wool inside. you have a wonderful portfolio on many resources. how could you treat this work like that.
Me: I didn’t put any wool inside. There’s grease and ink residue inside because I was testing it before sending back. The pen wasn’t in perfect condition and I didn’t break the body, but made a really good working tool for you. If you wanted to have an object to admire, you had to leave it in the condition it was in and admire it. Tomorrow I’ll send you all your things, but you, please, return mine to me.
Owner: I see dirt and hair inside, I attached a photo. I don’t quite understand what your things are you talking about. I sent you a whole pen with a request to restore the piston. I paid you the specified amount, you confirmed that not everything is included. But you didn’t warn me that you would take my original rod to your collection, but simply put it before the fact.
If there was a crack there, I’m sure you would have warned me in advance.
That’s not how it’s done.
I’ve had a medal signed by Valery Fedorovich since I was 22, for participating in the Superhumans project, at 23 I stopped doing it because I was disappointed in people. So now I’m even more disappointed in you.
I would have paid many times more if I could have returned everything.
If I could have gotten it myself, I would have returned it to you.
Give me back my piston, I’ll find someone to fix it for me.
Me: First of all, you yourself say me by phone that I should do everything necessary for the restoration, so I did not consider it necessary to coordinate every action. Secondly, I do not need your piston for my collection, it does not have any significant value, I left it only for reasons of someone else needing help with the old model like your as a reference, because you are of no use to it, but it could help someone. But it no then no it is, either way, your own “I” is always more important. Regarding the amount, if you wish, you can ask how much it costs to develop a complex mechanism from several parts and did prototype and compare it with the cost of making the cork head, or at least buying it on eBay, not to mention everything else jobs.

Some explanation 1: for those who don’t know, the lubricant is 100% silicone, which is not a water-soluble substance and has a jelly-like consistency. When It’s not as easy and quick to clean piston-filler pens as converter pens, so there’s always a bit of ink that can remain in the silicone and create weird shapes. But if you don’t know this, it’s better to blame master right away :))

!!!

I am adding this information because I have also received threats of blackmail with the publication of this information on all resources related to fountain pens with the threat of spoiling my experience and image. But I have nothing to hide, so I decided to publish it myself. I am adding it as an assessment of a person, so you know when a restored Kaweco Colleg 55 will appear on sale, know what kind of person you will be dealing with, no matter how nicely he communicated with you before. The pen, one might say, is already unique considering the repair performed, which the owner got for free. But any experience is experience, so I want to make this case a reference and in the future, before making a decision to help someone with vintage pens, I will first of all refer to this experience and ask if they really want it.

Explanation 2:

Fortunately, I took a few photos by microscope before work, which show the crack and show that it is not new, because the edges have already rounded over time and there are dents on the crack way.

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK. Lenskiy.org

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK. Lenskiy.org

And this is a nib that I corrected on my own initiative because I wanted to please the owner before I found out what he was like.

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK. Lenskiy.org

And these are web cracks on the piston body, which sooner or later will crack anyway, and partly because of this I decided to create a new mechanism rather than restore the cork head.

Kaweco Colleg 55 MK. Lenskiy.org

ps: I didn’t think or imagine that all my works about/with fountain pens for fp community are just a “portfolio” :))
