Minutes of history:
Walter Sheaffer was born in Bloomfield, Iowa, on July 27, 1867, into the family of jeweler Jacob Sheaffer, a successful gold prospector during the 1848–1855 Gold Rush. Walter Sheaffer had an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age; by the age of 12, he was already looking for work while continuing his education. After graduating from high school, Walter continued his training as a jeweler and then returned to his father to carry on the family business. However, it was becoming increasingly difficult for a private jeweler to compete with chain stores, and Walter persuaded his father to change the business from jewelry to watchmaking. After Walter married, one business could no longer support two families, so he also became involved in selling musical instruments: pianos and organs. His persistence and determination allowed him to accumulate enough capital to purchase his own jewelry store in 1906, and the following year he designed his own self-filling fountain pen. By that time, there were already quite successful fountain pen manufacturers, such as Waterman and Conklin, with their patented filling systems, but Walter felt that something of his own could be invented. And in August 1908, he patented… what do you think? — yes, indeed, the most famous, most effective, and simplest filling method of all — the lever-filler system. Success and popularity gave further impetus to the development of the business and allowed Sheaffer, in 1912, to devote himself entirely to the fountain pen business. The filling system became so popular that many other manufacturers adopted and used it, taking advantage of technical loopholes in the U.S. patent covering Sheaffer’s original design.

In 1913, joining forces with George Kraker and Ben Coulson, Walter founded the W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company (ʃeɪfɜː) with a capital of $35,000, and in its very first year the company made a net profit of $17,000. The rapid development of the business allowed the company, four years later, to purchase a large building from the Fort Madison Plow Company in order to establish a full-cycle pen manufacturing facility, including nibs, which until then had to be purchased from various suppliers. By 1917, the company’s production volume had reached 100,000 pens per year.

In 1920, Sheaffer introduced the “Pen for Life,” backed by a lifetime guarantee and priced at $8.75. It appeared a year before its ideological competitor, the Parker Duofold, which offered a 25-year guarantee and appeared the following year at a price of $7. Despite costing one-third more than the well-established brand, Walter believed that buyers would always choose a more reliable product even if it cost more, and he was proven right. The popularity of the Lifetime pen grew rapidly, to the point that it became the best-selling fountain pen in the United States. In 1922, in order to consolidate this dizzying success, Sheaffer introduced a “Writing Fluid” called Skrip. At the time, many fountain pen users did not particularly like the word “ink,” because this chemical substance could be quite aggressive toward fountain pens. The new ink was presented as safer and gentler because it was based on aniline dyes intended for coloring fabrics and wood (perhaps this is where today’s recommendations for the safest inks for vintage pens originated). Moreover, the bottle itself had a unique design: it featured a “pocket” inside the glass container that allowed the pen to be filled with less chance of getting ink on oneself.

Most fountain pens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries looked very similar because their production relied on the same material — hard rubber, or ebonite. Of course, manufacturers tried to diversify their designs by adding engraving and jewelry overlays, but the material itself remained rather monotonous — either black or red with streaks. Then, in 1924, Sheaffer introduced a pen made from Radite, which was essentially cellulose nitrate and was later simply called “celluloid.” The first colors adopted by the company were jade green and solid black, and within two years the company had completely abandoned ebonite. Thanks to the abundance and variety of colors, these pens immediately became popular with buyers. The only unpleasant issue became apparent over time: some dyes faded considerably. Thus ended (almost) the era of ebonite and began the era of celluloid. That same year, a new design feature appeared — the “White Dot,” which I described in other review.

The year 1929 was marked by another significant achievement: the introduction of the Sheaffer Balance, which was distinguished primarily by its torpedo shape from most of the pen models on the market, which had the cylindrical shape customary at the time. The second significant feature of this model, as its name suggests, was “balance.” Most pens developed before the Balance had their center of gravity shifted toward the tail end, which tended to lift the nib away from the paper while writing. The weight of the Balance pen was centered, making it more comfortable to write with, and this became the basis of the marketing campaign — “an ergonomic and comfortable pen for the writer with an attractive appearance.”

In 1949, another innovation, this time in the field of filling systems, gained popularity among consumers — the Touchdown system. It was a highly successful and reliable vacuum (pneumatic) filling mechanism that compressed the ink sac using air pressure from a plunger tube. Small openings allowed the pressure to be released, after which the sac expanded again to absorb ink. This filling system remained the primary one in use until 1963, although it was occasionally used even into the 1990s.

Another milestone in Sheaffer’s development came with the introduction of the Snorkel filling system in 1952. The Snorkel resembled the needle of a medical syringe, which extended from beneath the nib when the end cap was rotated. This made it possible to avoid getting ink on the nib while filling, keeping it perfectly clean and shiny. Its development was shrouded in secrecy and was preceded by Sheaffer’s largest marketing campaign in the company’s history. The Snorkel was actively used until the 1960s.

Sound business management, foresight, and the development of progressive innovations allowed Sheaffer to enter the top four companies in the industry by the beginning of 1929, alongside Parker, Waterman, and Wahl-Eversharp, while outpacing them in terms of growth. This also allowed the company not only to stay “afloat” during the Great Depression but to remain profitable. The company operated under two seemingly contradictory slogans: “if a buyer could afford a pen costing only one dollar, it should be the best among all those on the market,” even possibly at the expense of company profits, and “it is better to sell one pen for ten dollars than ten pens for one dollar” — this was how the company’s image was built, and it paid off. Shortly before the beginning of World War II, Walter Sheaffer was succeeded as company president by his son Craig. In 1951, Craig managed to consolidate the company’s three factories into a single facility headquartered in Fort Madison and increase sales to $25 million. That same year, the 50-millionth Sheaffer fountain pen was manufactured.

The company’s decline began in 1966, when the Sheaffer family business was sold to Textron Inc. Over time, without achieving the expected returns, Textron merged the company in 1976 with another stationery company, Eaton, and then in 1987 resold it to the financial and banking company Gefinor. New investment went toward creating a new line of luxury fountain pens that would be better suited to the European market than the American one. After ten years within the Gefinor group, Sheaffer was sold in 1997 to Bic, which had already acquired Waterman by that time, although the transaction was not without complications. The acquisition was accompanied by a major scandal and even legal proceedings. Soon after the acquisition, the process of moving production overseas began. The Fort Madison factory was finally closed only in 2008, although the original plan had been to close it in 2006; difficulties in finding facilities capable of producing the company’s distinctive inlaid nibs delayed the process by two years. All of the companies in the “Big Four” had long since lost their founders: Parker was sold to Gillette in 1993, Waterman was acquired by Bic in the 1950s, while Wahl Eversharp was acquired by Parker in 1957 and ceased production in the 1960s. The closure of the Sheaffer factory in Iowa marked the end of the era of the founders of the “golden” age of the fountain pen.

At the end: I have never seen such a thin factory nib (not from a nibmeister). Most likely, the previous owner tried to restore the color of this pen, because almost all Jade Green celluloid pens suffer from discoloration, but didn’t finish this because I bought it completely disassembled. So, despite the small overall size for my hand, I really liked this pen for its ability to write/drawing very thinly? sometime almost like thinny shaded pencil.
