Because I really like this modern tool both in terms of design and ergonomics, I bought another pen(a some time ago) to one of my main working tools, the Pilot Capless VP w|custom UEF nib. I purchased this pen as used with damaged clip because I liked the texture on the photo and was hoping to fix it. But in addition to the damaged clip, it turned out that there was also a bent nib and lost pressure spring, I think as a result of a fall. The previous owner tried to hide the fall and failed to fix the nib. I restored this nib almost immediately, but the rest waited for its time. Everything is working now, so I’m ready to share it for you.

З того що мені дуже подобається цей сучасний інструмент і з точки зору дизайну, і з точки зору ергономіки, я колись давно придбав ще одну ручку до мого одного з основних робочих інструментів Pilot Caples VP w|custom UEF nib. Я придбав цю ручку б/у з пошкодженим кліпом, тому що мені подобалась ця текстура на фото, і я сподівався його полагодити. Але окрім пошкодженого кліпу з’ясувалась що ще було погнуте перо і втрачена притискна пружина клапана, гадаю що внаслідок падіння. Попередній власник намагався приховати падіння та невдало виправив перо. Перо я відновив майже одразу, а решта чекала свого часу. Зараз все працює тому я готовий поділитись цим з вами.

Pilot Vanishing Point – Pilot Capless VP Black Carbonesque (made in Japan) 60246

Інструмент являє собою не типову для чорнильних ручок конструкцію, так звану систему capless, тобто без ковпачка, та на вигляд, більше нагадує кулькову автоматичну ручку:). Корпус має сталеву основу вкриту чорним лаком з цяточками а зверху прозорим, що нагадує текстуру карбон, металеви елементи покрити родієм. Усередині корпусу є вкладка-патрон, в якому власне кріпиться перо з одного боку та картридж чи конвертер з іншого боку. Механізм висування здійснюється кнопкою, що знаходиться в торці. Кліп вмонтований у корпус та знаходиться в області грипу.

This tool is not a typical design for fountain pens, the so-called cap less (capless) system, i.e. without a cap and resembles an automatic ballpoint pen :). The body has a steel base covered by black lacquer with specks and transparent lacquer on top that resembles the texture of carbon, metal elements are rhodium-plated. Inside the body there is an insert-cartridge(nib unit), in which the nib is actually attached on one side and a cartridge / converter on the other side. The extension mechanism is carried out by a button located in the end. The clip attachet to body near the nib in the grip place. 

З’єднувальні частини корпуса мають гумове ущільнювальне кільце. Написи на корпусі мінімальні та тільки повідомляють про ім’я компанії та країну виробництва Pilot Japan.

The connecting parts of the body have a rubber O-ring. The text on body is minimal and only show the name of the company and the country of production: Pilot Japan.

Перо: перо маленьке і тоненьке, золоте, 18 каратне, м’яке та трохи пружне. На перо нанесено тиснення у вигляді напису: PILOT 18K750 <M>, а у хвостовій частині  A802 та досить брендове ювелірне тавро Pilot-Namiki. (A802 це дата виробництва – серпень 2002 на  фабриці Hiratsuka на лінії А)

The nib: small and thin, 18K gold, soft and slightly springy. On the nib embossed PILOT 18K750 <M> and in tail part A802 and branded jewelery Pilot-Namiki stamp (where A802 production date is August 2002 at Hiratsuka plant on line A)

Ручка за відсутності знімного ковпачка та металевого корпусу має дуже відчутну вагу, з іншого боку лак не дає відчувати інструмент холодним, як деякі суцільнометалеві інструменти.

Загальні розміри: у закритому стані довжина ручки 140мм, при “висунутому” пері – 137мм, що цілком претендує на термін “в міру великий”. Діаметр корпусу: 13мм, у місці хвату – 11мм без урахування впливу кліпу при різному положенні пера. Вага інструменту з картриджем – 30гр.

The pen, in the absence of a removable cap and metal body, is feels weighty, but lacquer does not make the instrument feel cold, like some all full metal instruments.

Overal dimensions: closed pen is 140mm long, with “extended” nib – 137mm. Body diameter: 13mm, at the grip – 11mm without taking into account the effect of the clip at different pen positions. Tool weight with nib unit – 30g.

Що ж до історії конструкції Capless, то вона почалася в далекому 1963 році, коли компанія Pilot розробила унікальну безковпачкову систему до проведення XVIII літніх Олімпійських ігор, запланованих у Токіо, з 10 по 24 жовтня 1964 року. Це були перші Олімпійські ігри в Азії. У перших моделях виготовлених наприкінці 1963 року висування пера здійснювалося поворотним механізмом і лише наступного року було створено систему з кнопкою, як недорога версія для студентів із нержавіючої сталі та пластику. Спочатку ручки називалися Pilot Capless, але в 1973 компанія змінила назву моделі на Vanishing Point, а ось звичний і знайомий нам дизайн Vanishing Point з’явився тільки в 1998 році. У 2005 році компанія вирішила доповнити до моделі Vanishing Point більш легку і тонку версію, як данина поваги раннім моделям і назвала її Decimo. А в 2006 році з’явилася модель Fermo як данина поваги першим моделям з висуванням пера методом повороту. Модель безумовно красива з погляду естетики, але мала некомфортний баланс через важкий поворотний механізм у торці ручки, чому ручка в руці прагнула перекинутися і відірвати перо від паперу. А у 2020 році була анонсована нова модель Pilot Capless LS (luxurly silent?), з гібридним кнопково-поворотним механізмом, коли перо висувається швидким натисканням кнопки, а забирається м’яким поворотом. На жаль я ще не пробував цю ручку так що нічого не можу сказати про баланс у порівнянні з Vanishing Point та Fermo.

As for the history of the Capless design, it began back in 1963, when Pilot developed a unique capless system for the XVIII Summer Olympic Games planned in Tokyo, from October 10 to 24, 1964. These were the first Olympic Games to be held in Asia. In the first models made at the end of 1963, the nib retraction was carried out by a twisting mechanism, and only the following year was the system with button created as an inexpensive version for students from stainless steel with plastic. Initially, the pens design called Pilot Capless, but in 1973 the company changed this name to Vanishing Point, but the modern well-known design Vanishing Point appeared only in 1998. In 2005, the company decided to add a lighter and thinner version to its Vanishing Point model, in homage to the earlier models, and named it Decimo. And in 2006, the Fermo was introduced as a tribute to the first models with a twist retractable mechanism. The Fermo is certainly beautiful from the point of view of aesthetics, but in hand have uncomfortable balance due to the heavy twist mechanism at the end of the pen, which made the pen in hand tended to tip over and tear the nib off the paper. In the 2020, a new model Pilot Capless LS (luxurly silent?) was announced, with a hybrid push-button-twist mechanism, when the nib is retracted by quick press and close by soft ring rotate. Unfortunately I haven’t tried this knob yet so I can’t say anything about balance compared to Vanishing Point or Fermo.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4 мм, натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,8 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією в 0.15-0.2мм. Дуже класне поєднання для повсякденного письма та малювання.

 The line width by right side is 0.4 mm, and pressure allows to increase this line to 0.8 mm. The reverse side is written with a line of 0.15-0.2 mm. A very cool combination for everyday writing and drawing.

В решті: Черговий раз впевнився що Caples VP це одна із самих класних сучасних ручок у всіх аспектах. Якісний корпус, незвичний дизайн, ергономічно комфортний – коротше, на мій погляд, це ручка як то кажуть “must have” у будь-якого шанувальника перового письма. Моя версія не зважаючи на родієвий корпус має жовте перо, мабуть, попередній власник замінив його, але мені жовте навіть більше подобається. До речі, я правив кілька пер на Каплесах і можу сказати що вони мають дуже ніжне та тонке родієве покриття на пері, я би навіть сказав що воно більше схоже на платинове.

At the end: Once again, I was convinced that Capless VP is one of the coolest modern fountain pens in all aspects. High-quality body, unusual design, ergonomically comfortable – in short, in my opinion, this pen is, as they say, a “must have” for any fan of fountain pen writing. My version despite the rhodium body has a yellow colored nib, probably the previous owner replaced it, but I like the yellow even better. By the way, I have tuned and adjusted several Capless nibs and I can say that they have a very delicate and thin rhodium plating, I would even say that it is more like platinum plating.

Я давно вже обіцяв розібрати та показати конструкцію перового вузла для всіх моделей Capless (до речі він однаковий). І нарешті я зробив персонального ключа, щоб це здійснити)). Уважний читач може зауважити мені що на фото не оригінальний фідер Pilot, бо оригінальний зроблено з  напівпрозорого фірмового пластику блакитного кольору. Так, це не оригінальний вузол, але його точна копія від самі знаєте кого, але це не заважає показати конструкцію.

I promised a long time ago to disassemble and show the design of the Nib Unit for all Capless models (by the way, it is the same for all models). And finally I made a personal wrench to make it)). An attentive reader can tell me that on the photo is not the original Pilot feed, because the original is made of branded standard translucent blue plastic. Yes, this is not an original nib unit, because it is a clone from you know who, but that does not prevent the construction from being shown. 

Ось такий ключ я зробив для розбирання перового вузла. Дехто робить накатку для кращого хвату, але я вирішив додати простіше рішення що збільшує плече для оберту. До речі в моєму випадку муфта була вклеєна, тож зусиль з використанням накатки не вистачило би. З точки зору інженера-технолога для привабливості рішення можна було зробити ще один отвір в торці ключа та нарізати різблення, щоб ховати гвинт в корпус ключа, але я вирішив що мені це не потрібно)).

This is my wrench which I made for disassembling this nib unit. Some people do knurling for a better grip, but I decided to add a simpler solution that increases the shoulder for rotation. By the way, in my case, the metal collar was glued, so efforts using a knurling tool would not be enough. From the point of view of a technological engineer, for the attractiveness of the solution, it was possible to make another hole at the end of the wrench and cut a thread to hide the screw in the body of the wrench, but I decided that I did not need it)).

Update 2:

А ось цікавий момент, ще хочу показати як відрізняється ущільнювальний механізм зачинення пера. Механізм старого дизайну має звичайну пружину(в моєму випадку вона більша за розміром, бо я не знайшов меншу), а у сучасному стоїть пружина на розгинання.

And one more is an interesting moment, I still want to show how the sealing closing nib mechanism is differs. The mechanism of old design has an ordinary spring (in my case it is larger in size, because I could not find a smaller one), while the modern one has a spring for expansion.

Well, in the end, a sketch of Valery Markus is a writer, blogger and chief sergeant of the 47th separate mechanized brigade “Magura”.

Валерій Маркус народився 14 липня 1993 року у Первомайську Миколаївської області. Щойно Валерію виповнилося 18 років він вступив до лав повітрянодесантних військ. 2014 року, коли почалася анексія Криму та війна на Донбасі, Маркус потрапив на фронт під Слов’янськ. Через два роки на передовій у Валерія закінчився контракт, але він вирішив продовжити боротьбу з окупантами. Довго залишатися на фронті Маркус не зміг – у 2016 році бо він отримав серйозне поранення та був госпіталізований. Проходив тривале лікування і незабаром був звільнений із ЗСУ через непридатність до служби. Повернутись письменника на фронт змусило російське вторгнення 24 лютого 2022 року. Попри поранення, Маркус взяв у руки зброю і став на захист України. Усі подробиці служби в армії Маркус розповідає у своєму блозі.

А ще у 2017 році Валерій вирушив у незвичайну подорож, він пройшов з Парижа до мису Фіністерре, через Францію та Іспанію давнім паломницьким шляхом святого Якова – Ель Камін де Сантьяго, пішки. Все, що було у мандрівника – військовий рюкзак за спиною та мінімальна кількість грошей. Подолавши загалом 1811 км пішки, Маркус встановив на краю мису Фіністерре прапор України, підписаний українцями у Києві. Маркус також пройшов одиничний шлях через усю Скандинавію.

Після служби в армії Валерій почав займатися письменством. Нариси першої книги “Сліди на дорозі” з’явилися ще у 2015 році, коли Маркус був на фронті. Подорож 2017 року дала можливість письменникові набратися більше натхнення, аби закінчити книгу. Валерій самостійно взявся за виготовлення книги і вже у 2018 році вийшов перший тираж “Слідів на дорозі”. За дуже короткий час твір став бестселером в Україні.

Valeriy Markus was born on July 14, 1993 in Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv region. As soon as Valery turned 18, he joined the ranks of the airborne troops. In 2014, when the annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas began, Markus got to the front near Slovyansk. After two years on the frontline, Valery’s contract expired, but he decided to continue the fight against the occupiers. Markus could not stay at the front for a long time – in 2016, he was seriously injured and hospitalized. He underwent long-term treatment and was soon discharged from the Armed Forces due to unfitness for service. The russian invasion on February 24, 2022 forced the writer to return to the front. Despite being wounded, Marcus took up a weapon and stood up to defend Ukraine. Markus tells all the details of his service in the army in his blog.

And in 2017, Valeriy went on an unusual journey, he walked from Paris to Cape Finistère, through France and Spain on the ancient pilgrimage route of St. James – El Camino de Santiago. All the traveler had been a military backpack on his back and a minimal amount of money. Having covered a total of 1,811 km on foot, Markus installed a flag of Ukraine, signed by Ukrainians in Kyiv, on the edge of Cape Finistère. Marcus also made a solo journey through all of Scandinavia.

After serving in the army, Valery began writing. Essays for the first book “Footprints on the Road” appeared back in 2015, when Marcus was at the front. The 2017 trip gave the writer the opportunity to gain more inspiration to finish the book. Valery independently undertook the production of the book and already in 2018 the first edition of “Footprints on the Road” was published. In a very short time, the work became a bestseller in Ukraine.

Valery Markus runs his Instagram and Facebook pages, and regularly shoots videos for his vlog on YouTube.

Юрій Саманюк — воїн Збройних сил України, позивний «Тринадцятий»; фріфайтер, музикант, віськовий 78-го полку спеціального призначення “Герць”, учасник російсько-української війни. Кавалер ордена «За мужність» III ступеня (2022) та ордена Богдана Хмельницького III ступеня (посмертно).

Yuriy Samanyuk was a warrior of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, call sign “Thirteenth”; free fighter, musician, solder of the 78th special purpose regiment “Herts”, a participant in the russian-Ukrainian war. Knight of the Order “For Courage” III degree (2022) and the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree (posthumously).

Юрій Саманюк родом із Ворохти, що на Франківщині. Займався фрі-файтом, рукопашем гопак, спортивним туризмом. Кілька останніх років жив у Мотижині на Київщині, мав свою майстерню з виготовлення меблів. У перші дні великої війни добровільно став на захист України. У 2022 році був нагороджений орденом “За мужність” III ступеня та у 2023 році — орденом Богдана Хмельницького III ступеня (посмертно). Життя Героя обірвалось поблизу села Мала Токмачка на Запорізькому напрямку.

Волонтерка Оля Піліщук каже, що Юрко дуже цінував людей. “Ви б бачили, з яким трепетом він зустрічав кожну передачу! Хоч як важко було, хай в якій гарячій точці вони з хлопцями перебували, Юрко знаходив час для фото чи відео.”

“Буду дякувати усім, хто нам допомагає, скільки житиму”,

— казав він.

“Дуже важко зберігати світло у собі, коли навколо — суцільна темрява,” — розповідає Ольга  — ” Юрко був унікальною людиною, з якої це світло просто фонтанувало! Від нього завжди йшло так багато добра та щирості, що хотілося доторкнутись до нього, аби зарядитися хоч трішечки вірою в щастя і перемогу”.

Yuriy Samanyuk comes from Vorokhta, in the Frankiv region. Engaged in free-fight, hand-to-hand wrestling, sports tourism. For the past few years, he lived in Motyzhyn, Kyiv region, and had his own workshop for making furniture. In the first days of the Great War, he voluntarily stood up for the defense of Ukraine. In 2022, he was awarded the Order “For Courage” III degree and in 2023 – the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree (posthumously). The Hero’s life ended near the village of Mala Tokmachka in the Zaporozhye region.

Volunteer Olya Pilishchuk says that Yurko valued people very much. “You could see with what trepidation he greeted each transfer! No matter how difficult it was, no matter what hot spot he and the boys were in, Yurko found time for a photo or video.”

“I will thank everyone who helps us as long as I live,”

he said.

“It is very difficult to keep the light in yourself when there is complete darkness around you”, says Olya – “Yurko was a unique person, from whom this light simply gushed! There was always so much goodness and sincerity coming from him that I wanted to touch him, to be charged with even a little faith in happiness and victory.“
