Hi friends! Often in Pilot Falcon model reviews, it is mentioned that the basic plastic/resin model cannot install the biggest Con-70 converter, but metal version is too heavy. I remembered this remark and decided to create an ebonite body for mounting Con-70, which will not be heavy.

Привіт друзі! Часто в оглядах на модель Pilot Falcon згадується що у стандарту модель з пластику не можна встановити найбільший конвертер Con-70, а металева версія занадто важка. Я пригадав це зауваження та вирішив створити корпус з ебоніту в який можна встановити Con-70 і вона не буде важкою.

Andrew Lensky Pilot Namiki Falcon custom ebonite body –  (handmade in Ukraine)

Форма проста, класична, циліндрична, пряма зі злегка звужуючимся корпусом, пласкими закінченями та виконана з вінтажного ебоніту темно коричневого кольору. Секція залишилась незмінна, оригінальна с брендовою системою заправки, яка однакова що у пластикової версії, що у металевої. Ковпачок на різьблені, різблення має одну нитку, закриття/відкриття за 3 оберти.

The shape is simple, classic, cylindrical, straight with slightly tapering body, flat tops and made from vintage dark brown ebonite. The section is original and unchanged, with original proprietary filling system, which is the same in the plastic and metal versions. The cap on thread with one thread, close/open in 3 turns.

Звісно що корпус не такий глянсовий як виконаний з пластику\смоли, але відполірований до приємного вигляду. Ковпачок має доволі щільне різблення, але додатково має окремий об’єм для пера, який при закручуванні притискається секцією, що повинно додатково захищати перо від висихання.

Of course, the body is not as glossy as made of plastic/resin, but it is polished to pleasant view. The cap has a fairly tight thread, but additionally has a individual volume for nib, which, when twisted, is closed inside by section, which should additionally protect the nib from drying out.

Overall tool dimensions: folded length is – 138 mm, without cap – 125 mm. The diameter of the body is – 13.9 mm, at the grip – 10.5 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 20,5 g, without cap – 14g (include Con-70 converter).

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина складеного інструменту – 138мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125мм. Діаметр корпусу – 13.9 мм, у місці хвату – 10.5 мм. Вага складеного інструменту – 20,5 г, зі знятим ковпачком – 14 г(включно з конвертером Con-70).

Теоретично корпус можна додатково покрити лаком для більшої глянсовості і навіть Уруши, але по перше це збільшить собівартість, а по друге зменшить тактильну приємність від користування ебонітом.

Theoretically, the body can be additionally coated by varnish for greater gloss and even Urushi, but firstly, this will increase the cost, and secondly, it will reduce the tactile pleasure of using ebonite.

Протестував корпус у роботі та не відчув жодного дискомфорту, навіть приємно було тримати ебонітовий корпус у руках. На жаль, на зараз у мене не залишилось звичайної пластикової версії для порівняння відчуттів, але можу сказати напевно, що ебоніт значно приємніший за металевий корпус.

I tested pen in work and did not feel any discomfort, it was even pleasant to hold the ebonite body in the hands. Unfortunately, at the moment I don’t have the usual plastic version left to compare the sensations, but I can say for sure that the ebonite is much more pleasant than the metal bodies.

He was born on May 13, 1997 in the city of Novoyavorivsk, Yavoriv district, Lviv region. Since 2014 in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On March 7, 2019, Lieutenant Sloboda died from a bullet wound he received in the Donetsk region in the area of the joint forces operation.

Pilot Namiki Falcon Custom Ebonite Lacquered body by 5 layers glossy coating –  (made in Ukraine)

Hello everybody:)).
I would like to invite you to view at continuation of my custom body project for the Pilot Namiki Falcon. At the same time, I also experimented with the coating, so I decided to use these experiments into this project. I present to you the updated body:

На прохання глядачів з перового ком’юніті додав авторського розчерку та мою країну на проміжний шар.

At the request fom fountain pens viewers community, I added the author’s element and my Ukraine flag to the intermediate layer.

Цікаво ще, з того що використаний ебоніт має неоднорідну за кольором структуру, після покриття поверхня виглядає як Stardust текстура особливо у сонячному світлі. У нас зараз нема сонця, осінні дощі, тому не маю можливості це сфотографувати.

It is also interesting, because the used ebonite has a non-uniform color structure, after coating the surface looks like a Stardust design, especially in sunlight. We don’t have the sun right now, it’s autumn rains, so I can’t take a picture of it.

Загалом я поклав 5 шарів лаку, але здається покриття вийшло не марким, тобто достатньо тверде, щоб відбитки пальців було легко стерти та не пошкодити поверхню.

In total, I make 5 layers of varnish, and it seems enough solid, so that coating was not marque(non-smudgeable), that is, hard enough to easily erase fingerprints and not damage the surface.

Знову всіх вітаю, але сьогодні ще зі Святом чорнильної ручки яке заведено святкувати у першу п’ятницю листопада!
Вирішив зробити додатково ще кілька корпусів для Pilot Falcon Elabo з невеличкою модернізацією – додав ще одну нитку на різблення ковпачка та корпусу, зараз це двохниткове різблення.

Pilot Namiki Falcon Custom Ebonite body Ver 1.1 –  (made in Ukraine)

Again, I congratulate everyone, but today with Fountain Pen Day, which is traditionally celebrated on the first Friday of November!
I decided to make a few more bodies to Pilot Falcon Elabo with small modernization – I added one more step to thread now it’s a two-start thread between cap and body.

Зробив ще 3 додаткових корпуси, два з котрих напівглянсові (поліровані) а один матовий. Всі як і попередні мають в ковпачку окремий простір для пера за для захисту від висихання.

Made 3 additional bodies, two of which are semi-glossy (polished) and one matte. All, like the previous ones, have an individual volume for the nib in the cap to protect the nib from drying.

Всі ми знаємо що ебоніт (він же hard rubber) – це матеріал створений поєднанням звичайної гуми (каучуку) та сірки шляхом вулканізації. Матеріал з якого я зробив корпуси має деякі нюанси, а саме сірка, мабуть, використовувалась в каміннях, через що в матеріалі зустрічаються тверді піщинки сірки. Коли ці піщинки потрапляють на різець, він не всі їх зрізає, а деякі ще протягує через те що ебоніт м’якший за камінчики сірки. Тому після обробки утворюються такі радіальні канавки, інколи на 1/4 оберта, інколи на 1/3, а інколи на оберт, до моменту поки його не відірве з поверхні. На матовій поверхні це не так помітно, а от після полірування смужки становляться помітнішими. Хоча при звичайному огляді це не впадає в очі.

We all know that ebonite (or hard rubber) is a material created by combining ordinary rubber and sulfur by vulcanization. The material from which I made these bodies has some nuances, namely sulfur, apparently, the sulfur was use in stones, due to which there are solid grains of sulfur in the material. When these grains of sulfur fall on the cutter, it does not cut all of them, but also pulls through some of them due to the fact that ebonite is softer than grains of sulfur. Therefore, after processing, sometimes, such radial grooves are formed, sometimes for 1/4 of a circle, sometimes for 1/3, and sometimes for a full circle, until it is torn from the surface. It is not so noticeable on a matte surface, but after polishing, the stripes become more noticeable. Although it is almost imperceptible under normal sight. 

Колір матеріалу темно-темно-коричневий, але як що поруч немає чорного то він сприймається як чорний.

The color of the material is dark-dark brown, but since there is no black nearby, it is perceived as black.

Overall tool dimensions: folded length is – 143.5 mm, without cap – 125.8 mm. The diameter of the body is – 14.2 mm, at the grip – 10.5 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 23,2 g, without cap – 14.7 g (include Con-70 converter).

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина складеного інструменту – 143.5 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125.8 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 14.2 мм, у місці хвату – 10.5 мм. Вага складеного інструменту – 23,2 г, зі знятим ковпачком – 14.7 г(включно з конвертером Con-70).

Update 6:

Дехто у мене запитував щоб я зняв відео процесу створення, але на жаль поки не можу цього зробити, бо тут треба займатись однією справою, або знімати відео, або створювати корпус. Тому покажу лише декілька фотографій процесу.

Не приємно, але мене підвив постачальник ебоніту – Рівелта Трейд, який обіцяв надіслати вже оброблений, гладкий ебоніт, а надіслав мало того що необроблений тае ще із браком поверхні((

Custom ebonite body to vintage Pilot Falcon/Elabo (made in Ukraine)

Так склалось, що мені замовили зробити такий самий(або схожий) корпус до вінтажного Pilot Falcon/Elabo. Добре що у мене був такий, тож я з’ясував що розміри у нього геть інші, тому що у оригінального Pilot Falcon ковпачок на терті, тож відповідно секція довша, є додаткові металеви кільця для утримання ковпачку яки ширші за секцію та втулка поєднання з корпусом металева і має інший крок різблення та діаметр.

It so happened that I was ordered to make the same (or similar)body, but just for vintage Pilot Falcon/Elabo. It’s good that I had one, so I found out that it has completely different dimensions, because the original Pilot Falcon has cap on friction, so, the section is therefore longer, there are additional metal rings to hold the cap, them are some wider than section and the connection body bushing made from metal and has a different thread pitch and diameter.

I completely forgot to take a photo of this body to the post before shipping, so I’ll show the previous photos which I took for the customer, which without the final polishing.

Дизайн вийшов не ідеальний внаслідок довшої секції, але корпус для мене всеодно більш зручний за оригінальний.

The design was not perfect due to a longer section, but the body is still more convenient for me than the original.

Grief over the tragedy of 08.07.2024:

I wanted to make an other post today, but inhumane russia with its inhumane world did a massive missile attack on sick children. The photos is simply frightening with its horror. There are no normal words to express this yet another act of inhumanity. It is hard to even imagine what the children who were there felt and feel. (!!!!)

Мав наміри сьогодні зробити інший пост, але нелюдська росія зі своїм нелюдським світом завдала масованого ракетного удару по хворим діткам. Кадри просто лякають своїм жахіттям. Немає нормальних слів, щоб висловити цей черговий акт нелюдяності. Важко, навіть уявити що відчули та відчувають діти яки там знаходились. (!!!!)

Ink: Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo

Update 28.07.2024:

I was lucky enough to replenish the stock of source materials with small amount of semi-vintage dark brown ebonite, so I created one more body to order.

Пощастило поповнити запаси матеріалів невеликою кількістю напіввінтажного ебоніту темно-коричневого кольору, тому створив черговий корпус.

Матеріал має деякі нюанси: а саме має частки не розчиненої сірки яки при точінні, при зриві різцем з поверхні або створює радіальні смужки, або ритвинки, або залишаються в якості білих точок. На механічні властивості корпуса це не впливає. До того, на відміну від сучасного ебоніту, цей матеріал більш твердий, за твердістю відчувається як щось середнє між сучасним ебонітом та бакелітом.

The material has some nuances: namely, it has particles of undissolved sulfur, which during turning, when torn from the surface by a cutter, creates radial stripes or pits, or remains as light dots. It does not affect on the mechanical properties of the body. In addition, unlike modern ebonite, this material is harder, and its hardness feels like something between modern ebonite and bakelite.

Вже деякий час збирався протестувати нове, надіслане мені чорнило(Graf von Faber-Castell Deep Blue Sea), і зараз скористався цією нагодою.

I’ve been meaning to test the new ink sample(Graf von Faber-Castell Deep Blue Sea) received some time ago, and now I’ve jumped at the chance.

Ширина лінії звичайною стороною становила 0,2 мм, натиск збільшує цю лінію до 0,7 мм. Зворотною стороною перо пише прозоріше та сухіше з ширіною лінії так само 0.2 мм.

The width of the line by right side was 0.2 mm, and pressure increases this line to 0.7 mm. The reverse side writes more transparently and drier with same line width of 0.2 mm.

У решті: про ручку писати не буду, корпус зручний, сам користуюсь таким самим. Стосовно чорнил Graf von Faber-Castell Deep Blue Sea: чорнила для розміру пера від европейського F та більше з нормальною або вологою подачею, в моєму тонкому пері виглялають дуже блекло то світло. Чорнило доволі водянисте, 3 та 4 штрих по пареру вжее розочує його при цьому не збільшує насиченість. На мій смак здібності чорнила, окрім кольору, краще за більшичть чорнил лінійки Pelikan Edelstein, але програє більшості японських чорнил.

At the end: I will not write about the body or pen, the body is convenient, I use the same one myself. Regarding the inks Graf von Faber-Castell Deep Blue Sea: inks for nib sizes from Western F and wider with normal or wet flow, my UEF nib have very washed and light unsaturated line. The ink is quite watery, the 3rd and 4th strokes on the parer already get wet it, but without increasing saturation. To my taste, the ink’s properties, other than color, are better than most of the Pelikan Edelstein series inks, but poor of the most Japanese inks.

At the last is a test sketch – Roald Hoffmann – an American chemist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for the development of the theory of the flow of chemical reactions.”

87 років тому у Золочеві на Львівщині народився Роалд Хоффман -американський хімік, поет, драматург і філософ, лауреат Нобелівської премії.
Йому довелося пройти горнило Другої світової та нацистський «трудовий табій» для євреїв, з якого він з матір’ю зміг втекти, а батько залишився і був розстріляний. Потім – переховування, табори для переміщених осіб і зрештою в 1949 році – еміграція до США.
Там він закінчив Колумбійський університет та отримав ступінь доктора хімії у Гарвардському університеті, і невдовзі став відомим вченим-хіміком, професором Корнельського університету та членом низки наукових товариств і академій. Його ім’я позначає кілька наукових теорій, а в 1981 році він спільно з японським ученим Фукуі Кен’іті здобув Нобелівську премією з хімії.
При цьому Роалд Хоффман опублікував 5 поетичних збірок, 114 окремих поем і 3 театральних п’єс. Найвідомішим твором вченого є п’єса «Кисень» (2001), що розповідає про історію відкриття цього елементу. П’єса перекладена 16 мовами й поставлена на багатьох театральних сценах світу.

В англомовній вікіпедії написано що Роальд Хоффман польсько-американський хімік, тому що на час народження Роальда у 1937 році, місто Золочів був часткою Тернопільского воєводства що входило у склад тодішньої Польської республіки. Роалд Хоффман народився у польскому містечку Злочув (с 1939 року Золочів, Львівська область України) у єврейській родині інженера, випускника Львівського політехнічного інституту Гілеля Сафрана та вчительки Клари Розен. Своє ім’я отримав на честь Руаля Амундсена.

87 years ago in Zolochiv, Lviv District, Roald Hoffman was born – an American chemist, poet, playwright and philosopher, winner of the Nobel Prize.
He had to go through the crucible of the Second World War and the Nazi “labor camp” for Jews, from which he and his mother lucky to escape, while his father remained and was shot. Then – hiding, camps for displaced persons and finally in 1949 – emigration to the USA.
There he graduated from Columbia University and received a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University, and soon became a renowned chemical scientist, a professor at Cornell University, and a member of a number of scientific societies and academies. His name is associated with several scientific theories, and in 1981, together with the Japanese scientist Kenichi Fuku, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
At the same time, Roald Hoffman published 5 poetry collections, 114 individual poems and 3 theater plays. The most famous work of the scientist is the play “Oxygen” (2001), which tells the story of the discovery of this element. The play has been translated into 16 languages ​​and performed on many theater stages around the world.
It is noteworthy that Roald remembers his historical homeland, he even visited his hometown in the early 2000s. And also expressed support for democratic transformations in Ukraine and the social movement towards them, in particular during the events of the Euromaidan and the Revolution of Dignity.

In the English-language Wikipedia, it is written that Roald Hoffman is a Polish-American chemist, because at the time of Roald’s birth in 1937, the city of Zolochiv was part of the Ternopil Voivodeship, which was part of the then Polish Republic. Roald Hoffman was born in the Polish town of Zlochiv (since 1939 Zolochiv, Lviv region of Ukraine) in the Jewish family of engineer, graduate of the Lviv Polytechnic Institute Hillel Safran and teacher Klara Rosen. It got its name in honor of Roald Amundsen.

Last month, I was lucky enough to purchase several clips, and lately received request to create bodies to the Falcon section with clip and posted possibility so as cap doesnt scratch body.

Минулого  місяця пощастило придбати декілька клипів а тут з’явився запит на створення корпусу до Falcon із кліпом та ковпачком з можливістю розміщення на торці, щоб не царапався корпус.

З того що кліпи що я придбав мають малий зовнішний діаметр кільця я вирішив приховати його в корпусі.

Since the clips that I bought have a small outside ring diameter, I decided to hide it in the cap.

Тож в решті це виглядає ось так. Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина складеного інструменту – 142.5 мм, з одягнутим на торець – 185 мм. Вага складеного інструменту – 25 г(включно з конвертером Con-70).

So in the rest, it looks like this. Overall tool dimensions: folded length is – 142.5 mm, when posted – 185 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 25 g (include Con-70 converter).

Ну і на останок кілька фото на темному фоні)). Це напіввінтажний ебоніт, тож він не чорного кольору, а темно коричневого, місцями не рівномірного і має деякі вади, але створює відчуття як від шкіри “Crazy Horse”.

And finally, a few photos on a dark back)). It’s semi-vintage ebonite, so it’s not black, it’s dark brown, uneven color in places and has some flaws, but it feels like “Crazy Horse” leather.

Не зважаючи на черговий блекаут, закінчив ще один корпус для Фалькона із кліпом, але із  дуже цікавою текстурою схожою на шкіру “Crazy horse”.
