Hello everybody! I have been asked several times if I can find any interesting vintage Ukrainian pens for sale. I found and restored some interesting pens from the 50s. The advantage of these pens in comparison to the Kharkiv’s Pelikan is the ebonite body and the big ink volume, which holds more than 2 ml of ink.

Вітаннячко! Мене кілька разів питали чи можу я знайти якийсь цікаві вінтажні ручки на продаж українського виробництва. Я знайшов і відреставрував кілька цікавих ручок із 50х.  Перевакою цих ручок в порівнянні із відомим Харківським Пеліканом є ебонітовий корпус, та великий об’єм резервуара для чорнил який вміщує більше ніж 2мл.

1. Kharkiv’s “Avtoruchka” AR #1900 1959 (Minpribor, SoyuzOrgTechnika, Made in USSR) 7-59

Форма ручки циліндрична із заокругленими закінченнями, та силуетом трохи нагадує  Pelikan 100N. Система заправки аерометрична з піпеткою прямої дії, схованою під ковпачком у торцевій частині. Ковпачок, секція, барель та ковпачок заправної системи виконані з ебоніту. Ковпачок на різьбі, різьба 2-західна, закриття/відкриття за 1.5 оберта.

The shape of this fountain pen is cylindrical with smooth tops, and the silhouette is a bit reminiscent of Pelikan 100N The fillig-system is aerometric with direct-acting pipette hidden under the blind cap an the end. The cap, section, barrel and blind cap are made of ebonite. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closing/opening in 1.5 turns.

Ковпачок має імпринт належності до заводу “Авторучка” — АР і дату виробництва 7-59 — липень 1959 року. Фідер повторює форму вінтажних ручок Pelikan моделів 100 та 100N.

The cap has an imprint of belonging to the Avtoruchka dfactory – AP(cyrillic) and production date 7-59 – Luly 1959.  The feed repeats the shape of vintage famous Pelikan fountain pen 100 and 100N models.

Перо: типове, для тих часів і моделей харківських авторучок, сталеве перо 5.5 розміру з закінченням типу “ложечка”. На перо нанесено логотип заводу АР і розмір пера 5.5. Перо можна назвати м’яким і трохи гнучким, хоча це навряд чи напів-флекс.

The nib: is typical, for those times and models of Kharkov’s fountain pens, a 5.5 size, steel with a spoon type of ending. The logo of the AP factory and the size of the nib is 5.5. The nib can be said to be soft and a little flexible, although it is hardly a semi-flex.

Загальні розміри: довжина в складеному вигляді — 123.7 мм, без ковпачка — 115.3 мм. Діаметр корпусу — 12 мм, а в місці хвату 9 мм. Повна вага ручки — 11 г, а без ковпачка — 7.5 г.

Overall dimensions: folded length – 123.7 mm, without cap – 115.3 mm. The diameter of  barrel is 12 mm, and at the grip it is 9 mm. The total weight of pen is 11 g, and without cap it is 7.5 g.

На жаль, цього разу, не можу нікого порадувати “хвилинками історії“, адже в інтернеті я абсолютно не знайшов ніякої інформації щодо заводу “Авторучка”. Єдине, що можу сказати, це що завод було запущено в період з 1931 по 1941 рр. і підпорядковувався Міністерству приладобудування, засобів автоматизації та систем управління (Мінприлад СРСР). На 1 січня 1966 року він був записаний у реєстрі під номером 193 як “Завод автоматичних ручок, м. Харків”.

Unfortunately, this time, I cannot tell interesting “moments of history” because on the Internet I absolutely did not find any information about the Avtoruchka factory. The only thing I can say is that the factory was launched in the period from 1931 to 1941 and was subordinate to the Ministry of Instrument Engineering, Automation and Control Systems (USSR Ministry of Pribor). On January 1, 1966, it was recorded in the register under number 193 as “Automatic Pen Factory, Kharkov”.

Ще цікаву статтю знайшов в інтернеті від 19.06.2020 без авторства про те, що в Харкові відзначили 50-річчя випуску символу престижу СРСР — ручки з напівзакритим золотим пером — моделі 8500 ГОСТ 14131-69 (пізніше більш відомої як АР-95 або “Акулий хвіст”). Щоправда, незрозуміло, хто відзначав це свято і з яким розмахом, тому що зараз ми з упевненістю можемо сказати, що прообразом цієї популярної моделі стала відома серія ручок Montblanc 12/22 з пером Wing, якя була розроблена ще в 1958 році (ось тут описав докладніше). Але повернемося до статті, в якій була наведена цитата з замітки “3,5 мільйона авторучок щомісяця” газети “Соціалістична Харківщина” у номері 116 від 17 червня 1970 року:

“На харківському заводі «Авторучка» затверджено три типи нових виробів, які будуть випускатися у другій половині 1970 року. Це настільні письмові приладдя «Елегант», кулькова авторучка «Велетень» і авторучка з напівзакритим золотим пером. Цей тип освоєно в країні вперше. Конструктори та інженери підприємства постійно дбають про вдосконалення виробничих процесів. Нещодавно тут вступив у дію новий конвеєр, на якому налагоджено серійне виробництво кулькових пишучих вузлів. У цеху № 3 встановлено кілька автоматичних верстатів, де в 3 різні бункери закладають окремі деталі, а машина сама складає авторучки. Її продуктивність 10-12 тисяч виробів на зміну. Тут виготовляють 10 видів кулькових авторучок і 8 видів ручок з пером. За місяць ця продукція становить значні цифри — відповідно 2 мільйони 660 тис. і 738 тис. Щомісяця майже 3,5 мільйона ручок харків’яни відправляють у різні міста і села країни”.

Я розумію, що це стаття відповідна до загальної тенденції тих часів “наздоженемо і переженемо”, але з огляду на дуже мізерну інформацію про завод “Авторучка”, залишу цю замітку для історії.

But I found interesting post on the Internet dated 06/19/2020 without authorship that Kharkov celebrated the 50th anniversary of the release of the USSR prestige symbol – pens with a half-hooded solid gold nib – model 8500 GOST 14131-69 (later better known as AR-95 or “Shark tail “). It is not clear who celebrated this event and on what were, because now we can confidently say that the well-known series of Montblanc 12/22 pens with Wing nibs, developed back in 1958, served as the prototype of this popular model (described here in more detail). But let us return to the article in which there was a quote from the header “3.5 million pens monthly” of the newspaper “Socialist Kharkivschina” in issue 116 of June 17, 1970:

“At the Kharkov factory “Avtoruchka” approved three types of new products, which will be produced in the second half of 1970. These are desk writing set “Elegant”, a new ballpoint pen “Giant” and fountain pen with half-hooded solid gold nib. This type has been mastered in the country for the first time and the company’s engineers are constantly concerned with improving production processes. Recently, a new conveyor was put into operation here, on which the serial production of ballpoint pen assemblies has been established. In workshop No.3, several automatic machines are installed where individual parts are placed in 3 different bunkers, and the machine itself makes fountain pens. Its productivity is 10-12 thousand items per shift. 10 types of ballpoint pens and 8 types of fountain pens are produced here. For a month these products are impressive figures – respectively 2 million 660 thousand and 738 thousand. Every month, almost 3.5 million pens are sent by Kharkiv factory to different cities and villages of the country “.

I understand that this article corresponds to the general trend of those times “catch up and overtake”, but taking into account the very scant information about the Avtoruchka factory, I will leave this note for history of Soviet fountain pens.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить 0.4 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 1.0 мм. Зворотний бік через особливу форму закінчення пише тонко, і навіть із невеликим стабовістю 0.15 х 0.3 мм.

Original “spoon” type nib: the width of ordinary line by right side is 0.4 mm, while the pressure allows to increase line up to 1.0mm. The reverse side, due to the special shape of the ending, writes thinly, and even with a slight stubish effects – 0.15 x 0.3mm.

В решті: Цієї ручці вже 65 років, а вона і досі виглядає дуже привабливо:, до того ж має повністю ебонітовий корпус, великий резервуар на ~2мл, та ебонітовий фідер який дозволяє забезпечувати будь-яке перо від жорсткого до вологого флекса.

At the end: This pen is already 65 years old, but it still looks very attractive: in addition, it has a completely ebonite body, a large (~2ml) ink reservoir, and ebonite feed that allows you to use any nib from hard to wet-noodle flex.

Ця ручка на відміну від попередньої має довший ковпачок та перо розміру 5.0. На жаль у цих обох ручок не збереглись оригінальні кліпи.

This pen, unlike the previous one, has a longer cap and nib size 5.0. Unfortunately, these two pens do not have their original clips.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить 0.5 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 1.0 мм. Зворотний бік через особливу форму закінчення пише тонко, і навіть із невеликим стабовістю 0.15 х 0.25 мм.

3. Kharkiv’s “Avtoruchka” AR #1900 1956 (Minpribor, SoyuzOrgTechnika, Made in USSR) 4-56

Форма ручки циліндрична із заокругленими закінченнями, та силуетом трохи нагадує  Pelikan 100N. Система заправки аерометрична з піпеткою прямої дії, схованою під ковпачком у торцевій частині. Ковпачок, секція та ковпачок заправної системи виконані з ебоніту, а центральна частина — резервуар для чорнил з прозорого плексигласу. Ковпачок на різьбі, різьба 2-західна, закриття/відкриття за 1.5 оберта.

The cap has an imprint of belonging to the Avtoruchka dfactory – AP(cyrillic) and production date 4-56 – April 1956.  The clip has a shining star of the CPSU as decoration)). The feed repeats the shape of vintage famous Pelikan fountain pen 100 and 100N models.

Ця ручка на відміну від двох попередніх має прозорий корпус по типу демонстратора що дозволяє спостерігати за наповненням та кількістю чорнил.

This pen, unlike the two previous ones, has a transparent body like a demonstrator, which allows you to observe the filling and current volume of ink.

Ширина ординарної лінії прямою стороною становить 0.5 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 1.0 мм. Зворотний бік через особливу форму закінчення пише тонко, і навіть із невеликим стабовістю 0.15 х 0.3 мм.

Update 1:

На диво, але перша та третя ручки мають ще оригінальну піпетку, яка не розсохлась та працює добре. На відміну від всіх відомих аналогів, де піпетку треба приклеювати на шелак, у даних ручках піпетку можна закріплювати вощеною ниткою, для чого пиптик має відповідну канавку.

Surprisingly, the first and third pen still have the original sac, which has not stoned and works well now. Unlike all known analogues, where the sac must be glued to shellac, in these pens the sac can be fixed by waxed thread, for which the nipples have a suitable groove.

Кому не подобаються аутентичні пера “ложечка”, я можу замінити на вінтажне перо Wing-Flow виробництва USA, яке добре підходить за розміром, так само як вінтажні пера Pelikan, Geha або навіть Waterman Ideal.

For those who don’t like the authentic “spoon” tip nibs, I can exchange on vintage USA made Wing-Flow nib, which is a good suitable for these section with feed, as well as vintage Pelikan, Geha, or even a Waterman Ideal.

Ось так ручка виглядає в моїй руці. Оскільки всі ручки одного розміру то я зробив лише одне фото.

Update 5:

Всі тести я робив шляхом занурювання у чорнило і фідери доволі багато всмоктують в себе чорнил. Але я перевірив об’єм ручок водою, для цього достатньо зробити 14-16 натискань на піпетку зануривши ручку у рідину для повного заповнювання. Я зробив відео але сьогодні вже не встигаю завантажити його на Ютьюб.

All test I did by dipping nib to ink and the feed fills quite a lot of ink. But I checked the volume and works pens by water, for this it is enough to make 14-16 sac squeezes when nib is dipping to bottle of ink to fill it completely. I shot a video, but today I don’t have time to upload it to YouTube.

Додаю обіцяне відео як працює аерометрик-наповнювач (14-16 натискань для наповнення приблизно ~2-2.1 мл).

Update 14.10.2024:

Не давало мені спокою те що у перший ручці ковпачок коротший за другу, хоча модель однакова. Скоріш за все якийсь із попередніх власників просто пошкодив ковпачок та відрізав зайві частини. Тож сьогодні я вирішив це полагодити.

I was troubled by the fact that the cap of the first pen is shorter than the second, although the model is the same. I think, one of the previous owners simply damaged the cap and cut off the excess parts. So today I decided to fix it.

Вирішив наростити недостаючу частину із майже такого-ж напіввінтажного ебоніту. Зробив заміри та почав працювати.

I decided to build up the missing part from almost the same half-vintage ebonite. Made measurements and started working.

Звісно можна було б і кільце додати, а після укоротити до початкового розміру, але воно того не варто. Довжину вирішив залишити нову, бо так мені навіть подобається більше, єдине що ще можна додати так це одну канавку на ковпачку, щоб дизайн був в унісон із заднім ковпачком))

Of course, it would be possible to add a brass ring, and then shorten it to the original size, but it is not worth it. I decided to keep the new length, because I even like me more, the only thing that can be added is additional groove on cap so that the design is in unison with the blind cap))

Так, зараз ручки виглядають поруч, 1 та 2.
