Hey! A rather typical, made in Germany, but at the same time interesting writing tool from the 50s came to me for repair. I suggest you take a closer look.

Dolf Knopff Hotelbedart Werbeartikel Bad Nenndorf w| 14K semi-flexible EF nib (made in Germany) ~1952

Форма і конструкція цієї ручки доволі типова для німецької промисловості 30-40 років. Відомі та потужні підприємства до 50-х років вже перейшли на інші матеріали, але невеликі артілі залишились ще на попередній сходинці технологій. Фідер у даній моделі ебонітовий, але тримається з пером на терті безпосередньо у секції. Попри сталеву втулку та алюмінієвий шток, поршень у ручки зроблений із пробки, але на відміну від великої кількості пластикових корпусів цих часів, цей зроблений із целулоїду. Система заправки поршнева із типовою ручкою поршня схованою за ковпачком, конструкція нагадую ручки Osmia та Faber-Castell. Оглядове віконце помаранчевого кольору та його об’єм це і є весь об’єм чорнил. Ковпачок на різбленні, закриття/відкриття за 1.5 обертів, різблення двозаходне.

The shape and design of this pen is quite typical for German industry of the 30-40 years. By the 1950s, well-known and powerful brand had already switched to other trended materials, but small manufacturer remained at the previous level of technology. The feed in this model is ebonite, and holds with nib in section on friction. Despite the steel piston bushing and aluminum rod, the piston is made of cork, but unlike so many plastic bodies these days, this one is made of celluloid. The filling system is a piston-filler with typical piston knob hidden behind blind cap, the design is reminiscent of famous Osmia and Faber-Castell pens. The ink window is orange color, and this volume is the full ink volume of this pen. Cap on thread, closing/opening in 1.5 turns by two-start threading.

З прикрас, ручка має позолочений кліп і середнє кільце на ковпачку. Також на барелі присутній чіткий імпринт Dolf Knopff Hotelbedart Werbeartikel Bad Nenndorf, який колись був також покрити золотистою фарбою. Ковпачок поршня відмаркований розміром пера EF.

From the decorations, this pen has a gold-plated clip and middle-sized ring on the cap. Also on the barrel there is a clear crispy imprint of Dolf Knopff Hotelbedart Werbeartikel Bad Nenndorf, which was also once filled by golden paint. The blind cap is marked with EF nib size.

Перо: золоте, 585 проби, невеличке, за сучасними розмірами приблизно 4го розміру, приємне та напів-флексове. На перо нанесено Warranted, 585 в овалі, 14Ct та 52 у кружочку що нагадує сонце.  Клейма мені не нагадують жодного відомого бренда, але я припускаю що 52 у сонці це рік виробництва – 1952.

The nib: solid gold, 585 proof, small, about size 4 by modern classification, nice and semi-flex. The nib is stamped Warranted, 585 in an oval, 14Ct and 52 in a “sun circle”. The style of imprind does not remind me of any famous brand, but I assume that 52 in the sun is the year of manufacture – 1952.

Загальні розміри інструменту: повна довжина – 127.5 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 112.5 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 11.75 мм, у місці хвату – 8.8 мм. Вага – 18 г, а зі знятим ковпачком – 10.4 г.

Overall dimensions of the tool: full length – 127.5 mm, without cap – 112.5 mm. Body diameter – 11.75 mm, at the grip – 8.8 mm. Full weight is 18 g, and without cap – 10.4 g. 

Хвилинки історії:
Жодних цікавих фактів про цю ручку я надати, на жаль, не можу, єдине що можу зазначити що Dolf Knopff – це готель із рестораном який знаходився у містечку Bad Nenndorf поблизу Hannover, можна сказати німецького центру перової промисловості, майже як Бірмінгем у Британії)).

Minutes of history:
Unfortunately, I cannot find any interesting facts about this pen, the only thing I can note is that Dolf Knopff is a hotel with restaurant located in the town of Bad Nenndorf near Hannover, one can say the German center of the pen industry, almost like Birmingham in Britain)).

Ручку мені надіслали на обслуговування, після того, як вона була у іншого майстра, який повернув її із вердиктом “ручка не може писати краще, тому що із за її віку капіляри всередині застаріли та деградували”:)). Вік живи, вік вчись, і я багато чого чув, але такого крінжу ще не чув)). Насправді дійсно, пробковий поршень деградував і не тримав герметичність, фідер був забитий застарілим чорнилом і ще розколовся шток поршня на дві частини. Спочатку я думав виготовити новий, але врешті вирішив спробувати відреставрувати оригінальний шток та виготовити новий поршень. Після ремонту ручка була протестована.

The pen was sent to me for service, after it was with another master, who returned it with the verdict “the pen cannot work better, because due to its age, the capillaries inside have become old and degraded”:)). So. never old to learn, and I have heard a lot, but I have not yet heard of such a foolish apology)). In fact, the piston cork is really degraded and did not keep the seal, the feed was partially clogged by old ink and piston rod split into two parts. At first I thought about making a new one, but in the end I decided to try to fixing original rod and make new piston cork. After the repair, the pen was tested and works good.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,25 мм з відносно мокрою лінією, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,9 мм. Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії близько 0.2 мм трохи прозоріше.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.25 mm with a relatively wet line, while the pressure allows to increase this line to 0.9 mm. The reverse side writes a line thickness of about 0.25 mm a little transparency.

В решті: самий великий недолік вінтажних ручок це те що вони переважно маленького розміру, другий недолік це те що як правило вони потребують відновлення і більш частого сервісу, все інше це переваги)). Радити шукати цю ручку нема сенсу, бо це штучне рекламне замовлення, але перо дійсно дуже приємне, як для звичайного письма, так і для файного.

At the end: the biggest disadvantage of vintage pens is that they are mostly small in size, the second cons is that, as a rule, they often need restoration and more frequent service, everything else is a pros)). It makes no sense to advise looking for this pen, because it is an artificial advertising specimen, but this nib is really very pleasant, both for ordinary everyday writing and for penmanship.

Update 1:

Трохи додатково про розбирання, пошкодження і стан внутрішніх частин. Червоне чорнило, на мій погляд, було занадто токсичним, бо присутнє майже на всіх частинах корпусу, навіть там де його не повинно було бути))

A little more about disassembly, damage and condition of internal parts. Red ink, in my opinion, was too toxic, because it is present on almost all parts of this pen, even where it should not have been))

Єдину згадку на яку я натрапив шукаючи інформацію о Dolf Knopff це був інвойс від 1955 року, тож додам його для історичної довідки про існування цього міста)). Як що хтось володіє більш детальною інформацією, як то кажуть велкам ту поділитись)).

The only reference I came across when looking for information about Dolf Knopff was an invoice from 1955, so I’ll add it for historical reference about the existence of this place)). If you someone have additional info are welcome to comment, message or etc.

Я не люблю надягнутий на торець ковпачок, але в цьому випадку, коли корпус занадто малий це може бути виправдано для тривалого письма. На вигляд майже Pelikan))

I don’t like/use the posted cap, but in this case, when the body is too small/short, it can be justified for long-time writing. Almost Pelikan in appearance))
