Summit Cadet S100

Hello everyone after the holidays! First review this year, and it’s a review on vintage pen from the 50’s. The review is not quite typical, because I always completely disassemble my pens for review, but this one I bought not for myself, by request from other fp fan, and it is from a high-experience seller and already after service, so I did not disassemble “not mine and works” pen, but I think it will at some points will be interested for fp community.

Привіт всім після свят! Перший у цьому році огляд і це огляд на вінтажну ручку 50-х років. Огляд не зовсім типовий, оскільки я завжди повністю розбираю ручки, а цю я купував не для себе а на прохання, вона від відомого продавця і вже після обслуговування, тому я не став розбирати те що не моє і працює, але подивитись на деякі моменти думаю буде усім цікаво.

Summit Cadet S100 w| 14K OM nib (made in England) ~1950s

Форма і конструкція цієї ручки типова і не типова в одночас. Форма ковпачка типова для ручок 20-30х років, а форма корпуса більше типова для ручок 30-40х років стилю стрімлайн. Поєднання цих двох стилів для мене не типове:)). Наверщя ковпачка має пласке, навіть увігнуте навершя, а форма корпуса має заокруглене наверщя. Основний матеріал корпуса – целулоїд зеленого кольору, а-ля Jade Green, секція та наверщя виконані з ебоніту, як власно і фідер. Система заправки ричажна (Lever-filler) із маленьким ричажком, типовим для недорогих моделей. Ковпачок на різбленні, закриття/відкриття за 1 ¼ обертів:).

The shape and design of this pen is typical and not typical at the same time. The shape of the cap is typical for pens from 20-30s, but the shape of the body is more typical to the Streamlined pens from 30-40s. The combination of these two styles is not typical for me:)). The top of the cap has a flat, even concave top, while the body shape has a rounded end. The main body material is green celluloid, a la Jade Green, the section and tops are made of ebonite, just like the feed itself.The filling system is a lever-filler with small lever, typical for inexpensive models. Cap on thread, open/close by 1 ¼ turns :).

З прикрас, ручка має нікельований кліп із імпринтом Summit та тонке кільце на ковпачку. Також на барелі, над різбленням, присутній дрібний імпринт Cadet S100 Made in England. Дивно що завершення корпусу не просто заокруглене, а має заокруглене наверщя із ебоніту. Ковпачок досі має магазинну наліпку із зазначенням моделі – M Cadet M (але я не знаю M від значення Модель чи від роміру кінчика М).

From the decorations, this pen has a nickel trim with Summit imprint and thin ring on the cap. Also on the barrel, above the carving, there is a small imprint Cadet S100 Made in England. It is surprising that the end of body is not just rounded, but has a rounded top made of ebonite. The cap still has the store sticker indicating the model – M Cadet M (but I don’t know the M from the Model word or M sized tip).

Перо: золоте, невелике, за сучасними розмірами приблизно 4го розміру, напів-м’яке. На перо нанесено Summit, 14Ct, gold. Оскільки перо я не виймав то не знаю чи існуть там додаткові тавра.

The nib: solid gold, small, about size 4 by modern classification, semi-soft. The nib is stamped Summit, 14Ct and Gold. Because I did not remove this nib, I do not know if there are additional marks.

Загальні розміри інструменту: повна довжина – 126.7 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 120 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 12.25 мм, у місці хвату – 9 мм. Вага – 15.5 г, а зі знятим ковпачком – 10.2 г. Об’єм чорнильного мішка у мене вийшов 1.2 мл.

Overall dimensions of the tool: full length – 126.7 mm, without cap – 120 mm. Body diameter – 12.25 mm, at the grip – 9 mm. Full weight is 15.5 g, and without cap – 10.2 g. The volume of inks sac turned out about 1.2 ml.

Здається модель S100 існували завжди, в будь який час існування компанії, на фоні того як інші моделі з’являлись та зникали. Напевно не відомо коли з’явилась модель S100, але є припущення що це сталось наприкінці 20х чи початку 30х років під назвою Curzon S100 яка змінили попередню модель H100. Як що H100 більш нагадував ранні Waterman із накладним кліпом на закльопках, то S100 більше нагадував формою сучасний Cross Tawnsend із завуженими кінцями. В середині 30х форма під впливом тренду Streamline також набула заокругленості форма та зменшилась у розмірах із початкових 130мм до 121мм. В ці роки S100 також продавалась як Stephens 106. Також за деякий час до появи більш коштовної моделі S175 Mark 2 (Double Jevel) цей дизайн був протестований на Curzon S100 DJ, їх було виготовлено не так багато, але вони є. Під час другої світової війни всі приміщення були переоснащені для виробництва снарядів, а після закінчення знову повернулись до виробництва ручок, і назва із Curzon S100 перетворилась на Summit S100. Ці перші моделі отримали гравіювання назви Summit на корпусі на нікельований кліп із маркуванням Summit. Коли виробництво після другої світової війни повернулось до довоєнних обсягів, то модель S100 було вирішено перевести в сектор учнівських.студентських ручок після чого вона отримала додаткову назву Cadet та формою стала подібна до моделі S125 Mark 2 (цей огляд саме на цю модель). Піздніше з’явилась модель Summit S100 Cadet Mark 2 і не зважаючи на те що ручка стала цілком шкільного сегменту та отримала пластиковий корпус, перо і досі залишилось із 14каратного золота.

Початково компанія Summit буда заснована у 1895 році як Kay & Co – Liscard у ліверпулі, яка виготовила першу власну ручку BCHR eye-dropper під назвою The Queen. У 1899 році була створена компанія Lang Co Ltd із дочірнею компанією Curzon, Lloyd & MacGregor Ltd, адреса яких займала тиж самі приміщення у Ліверпулі. У 1920 році компанія змінили назву на Curzons Ltd. В 1928 році була створеня нова дочірня компанія L.Wilson & Co Ltd яка базувалась на South Hunter Street у Ліверпулі де пізніше розташувалось виробництво Summit Pens Ltd. Здаєтся, що зміна назви була простою хитрістю, щоб скористатися назвою «Summit», яка набула назви моделі для попередніх ручок Curzon Ltd з 1930-х років. Summit Pens Ltd припинило виробництво ручок у 1955 році, приблизно як і більшисть британських брендів того часу під вливом наступу кулькових ручок.

Minutes of history:
There is no doubt that the S 100 is the barometer for what Summit were doing at any point in time. Whilst other model numbers came and went, the 100 seems to have been ever-present!. It is probably not known when the S100 model appeared, but there is an assumption that it happened in the late 20s or early 30s under the name Curzon S100, which replaced the previous model H100. Just as the H100 was more like an early Waterman with a riveted overlay clip, the S100 was more like a modern Cross Tawnsend in shape with tapered ends. In the mid-30s, under the trended Streamline flow, the shape also became rounded and decreased in size from the original 130mm to 121mm. During these years the S100 was also sold as the Stephens 106. Also some time before the more expensive S175 Mark 2 (Double Jewel) model this design was tested on the Curzon S100 DJ, not many were made, but they do exist. During the WW2 all facilities were converted to projectile production, and after the end reverted back to pen production, and the name changed from Curzon S100 to Summit S100. These first models were engraved with the Summit name on the body and on nickel trim. When production returned to pre-war volumes after the WW2, they was decided to move S100 model to the school/student segment with add Cadet to model name. Later, the Summit S100 Cadet Mark 2 model appeared, and despite the fact that the pen became a school segment and received a plastic body, the nib still remained made of 14K solid gold.

The historical roots of the Summit stretch back to 1895 which founded Kay & Co – Liscard in Liverpool, who produced the first in-house BCHR eye-dropper called The Queen. In 1899, Lang Co Ltd was formed with a subsidiary, Curzon, Lloyd & MacGregor Ltd, which placed at the same factory address in Liverpool. In 1920, the company changed its name to Curzons Ltd. In 1928, a new subsidiary company, L.Wilson & Co Ltd, was established, which was based on South Hunter Street in Liverpool, where the production of Summit Pens Ltd was later located. Later, change name to Summit Pens Ltd have been a simple ploy to take advantage of the ‘Summit’ name which had been the model name for earlier Curzon Ltd pens from the 1930s. Summit Pens Ltd stopped making pens in 1955, around the same time as most British brands at the time, due to the onslaught of ballpoint pens.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,5 мм з відносно мокрою лінією, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 1,0 мм. Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії близько 0.3 мм трохи гостро.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.5 mm with a relatively wet line, while the pressure allows to increase this line to 1.0 mm. The reverse side writes a line thickness of about 0.3 mm a little crispy.

В решті: Мабуть, в будь-який мові є вираз “таке собі”, це коли реальність нижче ніж очікування, навіть без надочикувань. І ще занадто багато залежить від суб’єктивної думки когось, коли значення не залежать від точних вимірювань. От саме така сітуація склалась із цією ручкою, вона прям ну “така собі”, дуже звичайна як для вінтажнох не зважаючи на целулоїдний корпус. Не то що би флексу небуло зовсім, але він дуже слабкий, на мою оцінку знаходится десь між м’яким перо та напів-гнучким, тобто гнучкість меньше ніж у сучасного Pilot FA #10, що власно і підтверджуєтся деякими лістінгами з еБєю “Low flexible, 14K Medium nib, Flexes under med to hight pressure”.

At the end: Apparently, in any language there is an expression “so-so”, this is when reality is lower than expectations, even without overexpectations. And too much depends on someone’s subjective opinion, when the values do not depend on exact measurements. This is exactly the situation with this pen, it is just “so-so”, very ordinary as for vintage ones, despite the celluloid body. Not that there is no flex at all, but it is very low, in my estimation it is somewhere between soft nib and semi-flexible, that is, the flexibility is less than that on modern Pilot FA #10, which is actually confirmed by some eBay listings “Low flexible, 14K Medium nib, Flexes under med to hight pressure”.

Update 1:

На перше доповнення ось опис від продавця за яким була придбана ручка. Хотілось би сподіватись що відмінності від реальності були зроблені несвідомо, хоча продавець мав дуже значний рейтинг із великим досвідом продажу вінтажних ручок.

For the first addon, here is the description from the seller from whom the pen was purchased. I would like to hope that the differences from reality were made unconsciously, although the seller had a very high rating with huge experience in selling vintage pens.

Для тих хто потребує пояснень: замість F було отримано ОМ із невеличким бебіботомом, замість флексу до 1.7 було отримано напів-флекс до 1.0, замість обіцяної ручки із 30х отримано ручку із 50х. Згоден останнє ніяк не вплавиє на писменицкі здібності, але не відповідає досвідченності продавця..

For those who need clarification: instead of F, received OM with light babybottom, instead of flex to 1.7 mm, received hard-semi-flex to 1.0 mm,instead of the promised pen from 30s, received pen of 50s. I agree, the latter will not affect to the nib properties, but it does not correspond to the expirience seller.

Ліворуч згаданий вище облік із легким бебіботомом, праворуч виправлене мною перо. А може я помиляюсь і все зовсім не так?

At the left is mentioned above oblique with light babybottom, at the right is nib after correcting. Or maybe I’m wrong and everything is completely not that is?

Під час першого тесту перо інколи скіпало, після корекції я перевірив на тексті, але не перевіряв малюнком, скипів не було, хоча написав я не багато. Ручку не заправляв, лише макав у чорнило.

During the first test, nib sometimes skipped, after the correction, I checked it just on the text, but I did not check it by drawing, there were no skips, although I did not write much. I did not filling pen, only dipped it in ink.
