Today I want to show you one of the typical school pens from the 70s, a fairly well-known Germany brand, although not as widespread as Pelikan or Monblanc.

Сьогодні хочу показати  одну з типових шкільних ручок 70-х років, доволі відомого німецького бренду, хоча і не такого розповсюдженого як Pelikan чи Monblanc.

Senator 47(?) Krome with 14K Degussa nib (made in Germany) ~70s

Можливо, для багатьох, ця ручка здасться занадто простою і не цікавою, але з історичної точки зору і Merz & Krell, і тим паче Degussa варта уваги прихильників перового письма. Корпус ручки виконано із чорного пластику, а ковпачок із нержавійки із сатинованою поверхнею. Система заправки картриджно-конвертерна, формату international, але підходять лише картриджі із тонкою шийкою. Ковпачок на терті, просто на терті.

Perhaps, for many, this pen will seem too much simple and uninteresting, but from a historical point of view, both Merz & Krell, and especially Degussa, are worth the attention of fans of fountain pen writing. The body of the pen is made of black plastic, and the cap is made of stainless steel with a satin finish. The filling system is cartridge-converter, international format, but support only cartridges with thin neck. The cap is on the friction, just on friction.

Із елементів брендування ручка має лише гравіювання курсивом бренду Senator на корпусі. Пластиковий корпус закінчується нетипово металевим навершям.

Of the branding elements, the pen has only cursive engraving brand name Senator on the body. The plastic body ends with an atypical metal top.

Перо: мабуть, саме цікаве в цієї ручки це саме перо бренду Degussa. Degussa – це відомий у вузьких кругах колекціонерів та шанувальників німецьких ручок виробник пер середини минулого сторіччя. Як щоб це перо було більшого розміру його можна було вважати напів-флексом, а за наявних розмірів це лише м’яке перо. На перо нанесено логотип компаній виробника, 14K та 585. Перо монтується у секції на терті.

The тib: perhaps the most interesting thing in this pen is the Degussa nib. Degussa is a well-known in narrow circles of collectors and fans Germany fountain pe the nib manufacturer. If this nib were larger, it could be considered a semi-flex, but due to the available sizes, it is just a soft. The nib is marked by brand logo, 14K and 585 gold sample. The nib is mounted in section just on friction.

Overall dimensions: folded length is – 131.4 mm, without cap – 120.3 mm. The diameter of the body is – 10.4 mm, at the grip – 8.2 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 10 g (w/o cartridge), without cap – 4.1(!!!) g .  Volume of included cartridge is 1.5 ml.

Родоначальниця цієї німецької компанії була заснована в 1908 році Фрідріхом Мерцем, фармацевтом як Merz Pharma. Фрідріх Мерц винайшов кілька косметичніх кремів та інших засобів, які він запустив у виробництво в 1908 році на фабриці у Франкфурті. Виробництво же ручок почалося в 1920 році, коли брати Фрідріх і Георг Мерц об’єдналися з токарем Юстусом Креллом заснували Merz & Krell у Біберау. Спочатку бренд мал назву Melbi (як абревіатура Merz & Krell, Bieberau), але пізніше були створені ще торгові марки Senator та Diplomat. Початково вироблялись перови ручки, тримачі та механічні олівці з целулоіду.

Компанія мала скромний початок лише з десяток працівників. У 1929 році компанія переїхала у нову штаб-квартиру на Банхофштрассе з новою будівлю, яка була взмозі розмістити приблизно 150 робітників. У 1936 році вона була однією з перших німецьких компаній, яка почала експериментувати з литтям пластику під тиском, придбавши спеціальну машину для виробництва. Виробництво було закрито під час Другої світової війни, але після цього знову відкрилося та почало нарощувати темпи росту. Я наслідок трендових течій з настанням кулькової епохи, у 60-х роках почалося виробництво кулькових ручок. Minites of history:
The parent company of this German company was founded in 1908 from the activities of Friedrich Merz, a pharmacist as Merz Pharma. Friedrich Merz invented several water-soluble topical creams and beauty aids which he put into production in 1908 when he built a factory in Frankfurt. The fountain pens production instead began in 1920, when the two brothers Friedrich and Georg Merz associated themselves to the turner Justus Krell to found Merz & Krell in Bieberau, active immediately with a dozen workers. The Melbi brand was initially adopted (as an abbreviation of Merz & Krell, Bieberau). Later were created also the trademarks Senator and Diplomat. Initial production was fountain pens, holders and celluloid mechanical pencils.

The company had modest beginnings, employing only a dozen workers initially. In 1929 the company moved the headquarters at Bahnhofstrasse, in a new building that would accommodate the increased work force of about 150 people. In 1936 it was one of the first German companies to experiment with the use of plastic resin injection purchasing a special machine to produce parts with this technique. The production was shut down during World War II, but after has opened again and continued to grow and thrive. In the ’60s it began the ballpoint pens production. In the 1970’s, two models of pen were produced by Merz & Krell for Pelikan(120 and the 400NN) for Japanese markets under contract and should be considered genuine Pelikan products since they were factory authorized. Active in the production of economic fountain pens, ballpoint pens, in the 80s was one of the main producers of advertising pens, still on the market with the trademark Senator which remains one of the leading manufacturers of advertising pens with the trademark Senator. In January of 2006, the company changed its name to SENATOR GmbH & Co. KGaA. In addition to vintage Melbi and Senator brands, the company also own the Diplomat brand, which is known today and also produces fountain pens.

Ця ручка до мене потрапила на обслуговування, тому що в наслідок забутих чорнил на тривалий час канали забились і чорнила перестали подаватись. Попередньо ручку лагодили, бо на секції був помітний скол різблення який заклеїли, також залишки щось схожого на клей я побачив зі сторони пера. На жаль зняти фідер не вийшло, тому секція була промита в декілька циклів в ультразвуковій ванні, після чого її було продуто під невеликим тиском. В результаті видуто тверді частки залишків чорнил. Після чистки ручка була заправлена та протестована, хоча довелось ще дополірувати перо для гладкого ковзання.

This pen came to me for service because, as a result of forgotten ink for a long time, the channels clogged and the ink don’t flowing. The pen was previously repaired of some, because there was a noticeable chip in the section thread that was glued, and I also saw remnants of something resembling glue on the feed bottom surface. Unfortunately, it was not possible to remove the feed, so the section was cleaned by several cycles in an ultrasonic bath, after which it was blown out under low pressure. As a result, solid particles of old ink residues were blown out. After cleaning, the pen was tested, but additionally I polished tip on both sides for smooth glide.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,5 мм з відносно мокрою лінією, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію лише до 0,8 мм. Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії близько 0.4 мм.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.5 mm with a relatively wet line, while the pressure allows to increase this line only to 0.8 mm. The reverse side writes a line thickness of about 0.4 mm. 

В підсумку: не зважаючи на те що ручка шкільна і дуже проста, вона має золоте, приємне, м’яке перо. Із неприємних моментів секція здатна прийняти лише international картриджі із тонкою шийкою, жодний із моїх конвертерів не підходить без доробки.

ps: Я не впевнений що це саме 47 модель, але в неті я знайшов на вигляд майже таку саму модель під номером 47, але із поршневим механізмом заправки. По аналогії із Pelikan MK10 яка існувала і в форматі поршневої ручки і в форматі картриджної, але мала однакове маркування я припускаю що ця модель може біти схожою.

At the end: despite the fact that this pen is from beginner school segment and very simple, it has a solid gold, pleasant, soft nib. Of the unpleasant moments, the section is only compatible to accept international cartridges with thin neck, none of my converters fit without modification.

ps: I am not sure about model number 47l, but on the net I found an almost identical model under the number 47, but with a piston filling system. By analogy with the Pelikan MK10, which existed in both the piston-filler and cartridge formats, I market this pen as same markings, I assume that this model may be similar.

Коул: Шериф Верміліона попросив допомоги зі справою 419. До цього моменту я вже працював близько трьох місяців, за яки я закрив дві справи. Це було 3 січня 1995 року, я добре це пам’ятаю, тому що це був день народження моєї доньки.
