Montblanc 24

I was never interested in these models, as I considered this period to be the weakest in the development of fountain pens to their full time history, although not very long. But from time to time I do corresponding reviews to update the general knowledge base.

Я ніколи не цікавився цими моделями, бо вважав цей період найслабкішим у розвитку перових ручок за всю їх історію, хоча не дуже велику. Але за нагоди роблю відповідний огляд для поповнення загальної бази знань.

Montblanc 24 middle ranged fountain pen from 60-80s w| 14K OB nib (made in W. Germany)

Форма цієї моделі типова для дизайну свого часу і доволі схожа на представників від інших виробників, за виключенням пера “акулій хвіст”. Промисловість радянського союзу свого часу поцупила цей дизайн для своєї найвідомішої та найпрестижнішої ручки АР-95. Форма майже пряма циліндрична яка трохи стовщуєтеся всередині, але ковпачок є продовженням корпусу. Закінчення пласкі з обох боків. Матеріал корпусу – чорний пластик із блакитним оглядовим віконцем. Система заправки – класична поршнева. Ковпачок на терті.

The shape of this model is typical of the design of its time and is quite similar to representatives from other brands, with the exception of the “shark tail” nib style. The Soviet Union industry at one time stole this design for its most famous and prestigious pen, the AR-95. This shape almost a straight cylindrical shape with slightly thickens at middle, but the cap is a follow on the body. Flat tops on both sides. Body material – plastic of black color with blue ink window. The filling system is a piston filler. Cap on friction.

З прикрас, окрім логотипів на навершях, присутній напис на кільці ковпачка – Montblanc – №24.

Перо: за формою це подальший розвиток так званого Wing nib (Flügelfeder) яке було вперше представлено у 1954 році у моделях 25x. Я б назвав це перо м’яким, як би не форма Oblique, яка через свій скіс не дає натискати на перо та відчувати його м’якість. На перо нанесено ім’я бренду Montblanc, 14K, 585 та у заглибленні належність до моделі 24.

The nib: In shape, it is a further development of the so-called Wing nib (Flügelfeder) which was first introduced in 1954 in the 25x model line. В 1958 році Монблан вирішив змінити напрямок розвитку прибравши у 1959 році моделі 142, 144 та 146, а натомість випустив цю лінійку на заміну 252, 254 та 256; яка складалась із трьох рівнів: високого, середнього та початкового. До топових ручок в першу чергу відносились базові 12 та 14, та кілька ексклюзивів із золотонакатаним ковпачком (72, 74), золотонакатаним корпусом (82, 84), та із золотими 14К ковпачком та корпусом (92, 94). Середній сегмент містив моделі 22 та 24, а молодший, початковий складався із моделів із золотим пером (32, 34), сталевим пером (31), сталевим пером та хромованим кліпом (32S, 34S), жорстким, копіювальним пером Manifold (32D) та в картриджному виконанні (32P, 34P). Minutes of history:
In 1958, Montblanc decided to change overall design direction, removing the 142, 144 and 146 models in 1959, and instead releasing this line to replace the previous 252, 254 and 256. New model line consisted of three levels: top, medium and entry-level. The top-end pens primarily included the basic 12 and 14 model, and several exclusives with rolled gold cap (72, 74), a rolled gold full body (82, 84), and 14K solid gold cap and body (92, 94). The middle segment contained models 22 and 24, and the younger, beginner one consisted of models with a 14K gold nib (32, 34), a steel nib (31), a steel nib and chrome clip (32S, 34S), a rigid, copying Manifold nib (32D) and cartridge version (32P, 34P). The second digit in the model name indicated the size of the pen: 2 – regular, 4 – larger).

Ручку мені надіслали на обслуговування та змащення поршневої системи, оскільки поршень ходив туго та за поршнем копичились старі чорнила. Після розбирання, змащення, та збірки, ручка була протестована.

This pen come to me for service and greasing of the piston system, because piston was moving hard and old ink was accumulating behind the piston. After disassembly, greasing, and assembly, the pen was tested.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,6 мм із вологою подачею, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 1,0 мм. Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії близько 0.4х0.6 мм, але дуже незручно, бо перегорнувши отримуємо правий облік.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.6 mm with wet flow, while the pressure allows to increase this line to 1.0 mm. The reverse side writes a line thickness of about 0.4×0.6 mm, but it’s very inconvenient, because when we turn it, we get the Right Oblique.

В решті: як я зазначав на початку я вважаю цей часовий відтинок найслабкішим у розвитку перових ручок тому для мене ця модель не виключення. Мабуть, після кулькової кризи, виробники спочатку почали шукати шляхи як конкурувати із кульковими ручками, роблячи ручки більш доступними та простішими і це зайняло певний час простягнувшись на 20-30 років. Звичайно в цей час було зроблено декілька культових ручок типу Pilot Custom, Parker Falcon та Pilot Myu, але загалом це була доволі монотонна епоха. Але звісно прихильники бренду Montblanc повинні мати хоча б одну таку модель, тим паче що вона залишається самою доступною майже серед усіх популярних моделів ручок бренду. Ну а на додаток ця ручка оснащення не зрозумілим для мене пером Oblique, тобто я можу ними писати, але для мене це не зручно і не зрозуміло як можна писати із таким нахилом, мабуть, тому що я правша із класичною постановою руки.

At the end: As I mentioned at the beginning, I consider this time period to be the boring in the development of fountain pens, so for me this model is no exception. Apparently, after the “ballpoint crisis”, manufacturers first began to look for ways to compete with ballpoint pens, making pens more accessible and simpler, and this took some time, stretching over 20-30 years. Of course, several iconic pens such as Pilot Custom, Parker Falcon or Pilot Myu were made during this time, but in general it was a rather monotonous era in design. But of course, fans of the Montblanc brand must have at least one such pen, especially because it remains the most accessible among almost all popular Montblanc fountain pen models. And in addition, this pen is equipped by Oblique nib that is not clear to me, that is, I can write by them, but for me it is without pleasure< and it is not clear how can write with this bevel at all, probably because I am right-handed orthodox writer.

Update 1:

Цікаво що золоті пера Montblanc саме цього періоду 60-80х найбільше схильні до патини. І оскільки фідер має незвичну форму ламелів на внутрішній стороні, а не назовні як у більшості, то патина стала більш помітною на внутрішній поверхні.

Interestingly, solid gold Montblanc nibs from this period, the 60s-80s, are the most prone to patina. And because the feed has an unusual shape of lamellae on the inside, and not on the outside like most, the patina became more noticeable on inside surface.

Update 2:

Як і у сучасних початкових моделей Pelikan(M100-M600), виробник не закладав можливість розбирання поршневого механізму для обслуговування, тому втулка розташовується у корпусі на терті, та ущільнена фірмовим герметиком Montblanc рожевого кольору. Щоб розібрати поршневу систему треба гріти корпус та сильно тиснути на поршень спереду. Тож щоб не пошкодити корпус від випадкового нахилення та іншого, я зробив спеціальний інструмент – штовхач поршня точно до розмірів корпуса ручки.

As on modern beginner Pelikan’s models (M100-M600), the manufacturer did not provide for the possibility of disassembling the piston mechanism for service, so the bushing is mounted in barrel on friction, and is sealed by branded Montblanc pink sealant. To disassemble the piston system, us need to heat the barrel and press/push hard on the piston from the front/nib side. So in order not to damage the barrel from accidental tilting and other things, I made a special tool – piston pusher/puller exactly to the barrel shape.

Хто би там що не казав про високу якість цього пластику, та про те що чогось ніколи не бачив, але сама розповсюджена проблема із ручками цього дизайну як і “nail style nib” – є тріщини у секції навколо пера. До речі це також притаманно, навіть у більшому ступені, радянським ручкам із схожим дизайном АР-95 та Ар-96.

No matter how much you hear about the high quality of this plastic, or about the fact that some never seen anything bad with it, the most common problem with these design type pens, as well as the “nail style nib”, is cracks in the section around the nib. By the way, this is also often troubles, even to a greater extent, of Soviet clone pens with similar design, like AR-95 or AR-96.
