I’ve already had a few reviews of this model, but I’ve been dreaming of trying the modern Aurora Flex nib for so long that I decided to make a personal post for this pen, especially because it’s a limited edition.

У мене вже було кілька оглядів цієї моделі, але я так давно мріяв спробувати сучасне перо Аврора Флекс, що я вирішив для цієї ручки зробити окремий пост, тим паче що це лімітоване видання.

Aurora Optima LE 330 Viola Flex (made in Italy) 997-VIFF

Сучасний представник італійської промисловості письмових інструментів. Ручка має поршневу систему заправки (piston filler) та виготовлена зі смоли фіолетового кольору. Інструмент також прикрашений хромованими акцентами. Форма корпусу – циліндрична з плоскими навершями (flat top). Ковпачок на різблені, різьблення двозахідне, закриття/відкриття за 1 оберт. Кліп, також хромований, виконаний у класичному стилі арт-деко з кулькою на кінці.

A modern representative writing tool of Italian fountain pen industry. The pen have a piston-filler filling system and is made of resin in Purple (it.: Viola) color. The instrument is also adorned by chromium accents. The body shape is cylindrical with flat tops. The cap on 2-start thread, and open/closes in 1  turn. The chrome-plated clip is done in a classic Art Deco style with a ball at the end.

Між барелем та грипом є прозоре віконце жовтого відтінку для контролю чорнил. Корпус прикрашений фірмовим імпринтом: FABRICA DI PENNA A  (AURORA ITALIA) ITALIANA SERBATOIO, з правильним читанням: “fabbrica Italiana di penna a serbatoio” (зліва направо і зверху вниз, як узвичаєно у європейців:)), що в перекладі означає – “італійська фабрика автоматичних ручок”. Ковпачок, крім хромованого кліпу, прикрашає широким кільцем з гравіюванням AURORA ITALY та візерунком у грецькому стилі. На наверші розташовано номер у лімітованому виданні 078/330.

There is a transparent, yellow tint ink window between barrel and grip for ink control. The body is decorated with branded imprint: FABRICA DI PENNA A (AURORA ITALIA) ITALIANA SERBATOIO, read from left to right and top to bottom as customary in western world, meaning “Italian fountain pen factory.” The cap, in addition to the chrome-plated clip, is adorned by wide ring engraved with AURORA ITALY and pattern in Greek style. The top has the limited edition number 078/330.

Перо: це саме велике сучасне перо Аврора, приблизно 6 розміру, золоте, 14 каратів, вагою – 0,66 г. На перо нанесено вінтажний історичний логотип Aurora, 14K, 585 та ювелірне тавро: ★5 TO (TO – позначка місця розташування – Турін).

The Nib: this is the largest modern Aurora nib, approximately size 6, solid gold, rhodium-plated, 14-carat, weight of 0.66 g. The nib is stamped with the vintage historical Aurora logo, 14K, 585  and jewelry mark: ★5 TO (place of manufacture – Torino | Turin).

Загальні розміри інструмента: у складеному стані – 127.5 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125 мм, діаметр корпусу – 14 мм, у місці хвата – 11 мм. Повна вага: 21.8 г, без ковпачка 14 г.

Overall tool dimensions: when closed – 127.5 mm, without cap – 123 mm, body diameter – 14 mm, at the grip – 11 mm. Total weight: 21.8 g, without cap 14 g.

Хвилинки історії: припускаю що модель Optima з’явилась на ринок після появи сучасної Aurora 88 Big як бажання зробити меншу модель, на кшталт Sailor 1911 та ProGear. Тобто із корпуса 88 відрізали кінцівки, та скоротили барель на 5мм і отримали Optima. Сучасна Aurora 88 Big з’явилась на ринку у 1988 році. Але історична Aurora Optima також існувала, та з’явилась у каталогах Аврора у 1938 році як наслідок тенденцій того часу. Вона поєднувала дизайн Eversharp Doric/OMAS Extra та бажання бачити рівень чорнил як відповідь на Parker Vacumatic. Це була ручка із напівпрозорого целулоїду із поршневою заправочною системою, поступового, плунжерного руху. Але модель випускалась лише кілька років і була припинена на початку 40х.

Moments of history: I assume that the Optima model appeared on the market after the appearance of the modern Aurora 88 Big as a desire to make a smaller model, like the Sailor 1911 and ProGear. That is, the cuted tops and 5mm from barrel of 88 Big and the Optima was obtained. The modern Aurora 88 Big released on the market in 1988. But the historical Aurora Optima also existed, and appeared in Aurora catalogs in 1938 as a result of the trends of those time. It combined the design of the Eversharp Doric/OMAS Extra and the desire to make visible ink level in the barrel. It was a pen made of translucent celluloid with piston filling system, not modern one type with piston move like a plunger movement(pull-push). But the model was only produced for a few years and was discontinued in the early 40s.

Ручка до мене потрапила в пошкодженому стані, майже переламана навпіл. На неї або сіли, або невдало защемили ящиком столу, тож була пошкоджена прозора капсула та барель мав тріщину майже уздовж всього корпусу. Протестована після лагодження.

The pen come to me in a damaged condition, almost broken in half. It had either been sat on or accidentally jammed in a desk drawer, so the transparent inside capsule was damaged and barrel had a crack almost along the full length. So, repaired and after that tested

Ширина лінії звичайною стороною становить 0,45 мм, натиск збільшує цю лінію до 1,0 мм. Лінія доволі волога та насичена прямою стороною. Зворотною стороною перо пише приємно, малювати навіть краще ніж прямою, бо лінія має нормальну подачу з шириною лінії  0.35 мм.

The width of the line by right side is 0.45 mm, and pressure increases this line to 1.0 mm. The line is wet and  saturated by right side. The reverse side writes enough nicely, it is even better to draw than by right side, because the line has a normal flow with line width of 0.35 mm.

У підсумку: то ж  що у підсумку? Жодного разу це не флекс і навіть не напів-флекс, я би сказав що це перо більше схоже на софт, адже гнучкість доволі жорстка та повільна, за моїм відчуттям  трохи схожа на Noodlers Flex без модифікацій. Користуватись варіацією можна хіба що на дуже великих літерах(15-25 мм та більше), інакше це буде просто товсті та вологі літери. Мені дуже подобається корпус Оптіма за ергономікою, але я радий що свого часу не придбав це перо, хоча дуже бажав його вполювати, бо був би дуже розчарований. Тим хто шукає флекс раджу звернути увагу на оригінальне вінтажне перо від Аврори із 30-40х

At the end: So what’s in final? It’s never a flex at all and even a semi-flex, I would say that this nib is more like a soft, because the flexibility is quite stiff and hard, in my opinion it’s a bit like a unmodified Noodlers Flex. You can use pressure (line variation) only on very large letters (15-25mm or more), otherwise it will just be thick and wet letters. I really like the body of the Optima for ergonomics, but I’m glad that I didn’t buy this nib at the time, although I really wanted to hunt it down, because I would have been very disappointed. So, for those who looking Aurora flex, I advise you to pay attention to the historical vintage nib from Aurora from the 30s-40s.

At the end, a portrait of actor Yuri Filipenko, who died at the front on June 15, 2025..

Юрій Філіпенко — український актор Київського академічного драматичного театру на Подолі. У 2016 році закінчив Київський національний університет театру, кіно і ТБ ім. І. К. Карпенка-Карого. У театрі з 2016 року. Юрій зіграв головну роль у детективній драмі “Колір пристрасті”(2021) — старшого лейтенанта Андрія, чия доля круто міняється. Ця роль показала його як актора з харизмою й глибиною. Також знімався у мелодрамі “Обіцянка богу” (2018) та “Окуповані” (2023). У 2024 році Юрій одружився з Катериною Мотрич у Харкові, а наступного дня після весілля повернувся на бойові позиції.

Yuriy Filipenko was a Ukrainian actor of the Kyiv Academic Drama Theater on Podil. In 2016, he graduated from the Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema and Television named after I. K. Karpenko-Kary. Work in theater since 2016. Yuriy played the main role in the detective drama “The Color of Passion” (2021) — Senior Lieutenant Andriy, whose fate changes dramatically. This role showed him as an actor with charisma and depth. He also starred in the melodramas “The Promise of God” (2018) and drama “The Occupied” (2023). In 2024, Yuriy married Kateryna Motrych in Kharkiv, and the day after the wedding he returned to combat positions.
