It so happened that I had another Sheaffer to review, also with an inlaid nib. But this time I decided not to completely disassemble this pen for review for some reasons.

Так слалось що я маю ще один Sheaffer на огляд, також з інкрустованим пером. Але цього разу я вирішив не розбирати повністю ручку для огляду з декількох причин.

Sheaffer Imperial Triumph Touchdown  797 Lined pattern (made in USA) 1966-1969

Форма пряма циліндрична трохи схожа на бочку, бо розширена у центрі. Матеріал корпусу латунь із покриттям золотом, судячи із інформації в мережі ранні моделі були Gold-Filled, а більш пізні Gold-plated (electroplated). Система заправки фірмова Touchdown, по суті це система базована на гумовому мішку, але стискач мішка не механічний типу Lever, а повітряний. Ковпачок на терті.

The shape is straight, cylindrical, a bit like a barrel, because it is widened in the center.. The body material is lacquered brass, the clip is 23K gold-plated. The filling system is a Touchdown, in fact it is a system based on rubber sacs, but the sac squeeze is not a mechanical Lever type, but an air. The cap is on friction.

Перо: це саме справжнє інкрустоване перо, тобто секцію відливали під тиском прямо на перо яке було встановлено в матрицю. Перо золоте, із 14 каратного золота. На перо нанесено ім’я бренду Sheaffer, нижче, ліворуч 14K, а праворуч ®, а наприкінці пера – країна- виробник USA. На диво перо не цвях, а навіть доволі м’яке і до речі, фідер ебонітовий.

The Nib: this is a real inlaid nib, meaning the section is cast molded directly onto the nib. The nib is 14K solid gold. The nib is stamped with the Sheaffer brand name, below, on the left 14K (gold sample), and on the right, ®, and at the end of the nib – country of manufacturer USA.  Surprisingly, but this nib is not a nail, and rather soft and by the way, the feed is ebonite.

Хвилинки історії:
У грудні 1960 року Sheaffer представив своїм торговим представникам нову лінійку ручок Imperial. Ця нова модель була виконана в дусі дизайну, представленої раніше, у 1959 році моделі Sheaffer “Ручки для чоловіків” (або PFM). Деякі моделі ручок Imperial настільки близькі за дизайном до PFM, що вони виглядають як молодша модель (Slim) PFM, і тому їх часто плутають зі своїми більшими братами. Sheaffer спростив виробництво нової Imperial, відмовившись від власної системи заправки Snorkel на користь простішої системи Touchdown, але ручки все одно позиціонувались як преміальні, хоч і трохи нижче PFM. Спочатку Imperial була лише із системою Touchdown, але Sheaffer швидко впровадив і версії з картриджами.

Перші дві моделі Imperial, були представлені в 1961 році, як Imperial IV( повінстю пластикова) та Imperial VI(із ковпачком з нержавійки). Модель Imperial IV дуже нагадувала PFM III, а Imperial VI модель PFM IV. Цікаво що сучасні користувачи всі ручки Sheaffer зі схожим дизайном називають Imperial, хоча сама компанія, із невідомих причин, не всім моделям давала назву Imperial, вне залежності від системи заправки, деяки мали лише номери(500б 800б 1000). До речі Sheaffer Imperial I мав перо типу “нігтик”, а Sheaffer Imperial II та III мали конічні пера схожі на ранні Triumph.

Відмовляючись від лінійки PFM, Sheaffer презентувала модель Imperial Triumph яка мала gold-filled корпус та ковпачок у 1961 році. Саме для цієї моделі компанія відмовилась від нумерації римськими цифрами та віддала перевагу особистій назві. У 1963 році, в рамках святкування 50-річчя компанії, Sheaffer відновили свій відомий термін Lifetime, від якого вона відмовилась у 1947 році. Моделі White Dot лінійки Imperial були перейменовані на Lifetime, і Sheaffer відрізняв їх від решти лінійки, додавши напис «LIFETIME» на кліп та перо Цікаво, що ручки Lifetime були лише з картриджами, а Touchdown систему мали лише моделі нижчої цінової категорії , мабуть окрім Imperial Triumph.

1 березня 1966 року компанія Sheaffer Pen Co стала підрозділом Textron Inc, а логотип «Sheaffer’s» було змінено на «Sheaffer» для всієї продукції. Приблизно в цей же час знову було припинено використання терміну Lifetime, а відповідна лінійка була замінена новою лінійкою картриджних ручок під назвою «Stylist». Мабуть у цей час, такж Gold-filling дизайн був замінений на Gold-plating(гальванічне). А на початку 1970 року компанія вивела із виробництва систему Touchdown залишивши лише картриджну систему, а не вздовж і замінили стріловидний довгий дизайн інкрустованого пера на більш компактний.

Moments of history:
In December 1960, Sheaffer introduced a new line of pens to its sales representatives with the name “Imperial”. This new model was made in the spirit of the design of the Sheaffer “Pen for Men” (or PFM) model introduced earlier in 1959. Some models of Imperial pens are so close in design to the PFM that they look like a younger (Slim) model of the PFM, and are therefore often confused with their larger brothers. Sheaffer simplified the production of the new fountain pens “Imperial”, abandoning its own Snorkel filling system in favor of the simpler Touchdown system, but the pens were still positioned as premium, albeit slightly below the PFM. At first, the Imperial was only available with the Touchdown system, but Sheaffer quickly introduced cartridge versions.

The first two Imperial models were introduced in 1961 as the Imperial IV (with a plastic cap) and the Imperial VI (with a stainless steel cap). The Imperial IV closely resembled the PFM III, and the Imperial VI resembled the PFM IV. Interestingly, modern users call all Sheaffer pens with a similar design as “Imperial”, although the company itself, for unknown reasons, did not give the name “Imperial” to all models, regardless of the filling system, some model had only numbers (500, 800, 1000). By the way, the Sheaffer Imperial I had a “nail” style nib, and the Sheaffer Imperial II and III had a conical styled nibs similar to the earlier Triumph nibs.

Abandoning the PFM line, Sheaffer introduced the Imperial Triumph model, which had a gold-filled barrel and cap, in 1961. It was for this model that the company abandoned Roman numerals in favor of a personal name. In 1963, as part of the company’s 50th anniversary celebration, Sheaffer renewed its famous Lifetime term, which it had abandoned in 1947. The White Dot models of the Imperial line were renamed to Lifetime, and Sheaffer distinguished them from the rest of the line by adding the inscription “LIFETIME” on clip and nib. Interestingly, the Lifetime pens were cartridge-only, and only lower-priced models has Touchdown filling system, except for the Imperial Triumph.

On March 1, 1966, Sheaffer Pen Co. became a division of Textron Inc., and the “Sheaffer’s” logo was changed to “Sheaffer” for all products. Around the same time, the Lifetime term was again discontinued, and these line was replaced by a new line of cartridge pens called the “Stylist.” Apparently, at this time, the Gold-filling finishing design was also changed to Gold-plating (electroplate). Then, in early 1970, the company discontinued the Touchdown filling system, leaving only the cartridge system, and replaced the long, arrowhead inlaid nib design with a more compact one. Ця ручка мала, так само як і попередня, гостру зворотну сторону пера, яку я дополірував. Але в цілому вона не потребувала обслуговування.

This pen, like the previous one, had a crispy back side of the nib, which I a little polished. But overall, it didn’t require any service.

Ширина лінії звичайною стороною становить 0,4 мм, натиск збільшує цю лінію до 0,8 мм. Лінія волога та приємно гладка. Зворотною стороною перо пише також гладко, товщиною лінії 0.25-0.3 мм.

The width of the line by right side is 0.4 mm, and pressure increases this line to 0.8 mm. The line is wet and pleasant smooth by right side. The reverse side writes also smooth with line width of 0.25-0.3 mm.

У підсумку: Ручку я купував із пером EF, але насправді перо виявилось розміру F, але це надзвичайно приємне перо. Лінія відносно тонка та насичена із приємним ковзанням, а зворотна сторона дає тонку та суху лінію яка забезпечує якісне тонування при малювання. Загалом я зустрічаю не так багато ручок які мені подобаються саме для малювання, але ця дуже сподобалась. Не зважаючи на гладку та сходячу секцію, типу L2K, ручка тримається міцно і пальці не зісковзують до пера. Тож, останні дві моделі Sheaffer мене приємно вразили.

ps: психологічно, бентежить лише кирпате перо яке підсвідомо, постійно виникає бажання виправити:))

At the end: I bought this pen with EF nib, but in fact, this pen has F sized nib, but it is an extremely pleasant nib. The line is relatively thin and saturated with pleasant glide, and with reverse side gives a thin and dry line that allowed to do high-quality shading when drawing. In general, I don’t come across many pens that I like specifically for drawing from the box, but I really liked this one. Despite the smooth and tapering section, like the L2K, this pen holds firmly in my hand and my fingers don’t slip off to the nib. So, the last two Sheaffer models which I reviewed, pleasantly surprised me.

ps: psychologically, the only thing that bothers me is the snub-nosed nib, which subconsciously, I constantly have a desire to correct:))
