Waterman C/F with converter/body mods

As some may remember, I stopped writing full-length reviews on fountain pens, but for the sake of a new interesting modernization project, I decided to make an exception for this wellknown and iconic model.

Waterman C/F Marbled Brown lacquered w|18K M nib (made in France) 1953-1972

Ця ручка створена у форматі Слім, корпус виготовлений із латуні та покрит лаком коліром “коричневий граніт”. Система запраки – картриджно-конвертерна, але унікального пропріетарного формату який зараз має назву CF (Cartridge Filler). Ковпачок на терті.

This pen is created in a Slim format, the body is made of brass and coated by “brown marbled” lacquer. The filling system is cartridge-converter, but with unique proprietary format which is now called CF (Cartridge Filler). The cap is on friction (snap on).

Ця модель має вбудоване перо на полозьях, інкрустовану накладку яка стала візітівкою моделі та фірмовий подвійний кліп який піздніше стане станартом для компанії. На нижній стороні секції розташован серійний номер моделі А603133. На кільці корпуса розташовані написи Waterman та Made in France. Перо золоте, 18 каратне і не зважаючи на незвичайну форму відносно м’яке.

This model has a inset/slidedon nib, an inlaid plate that became the model’s calling card, and the signature double clip that later became a standard for the company. On the underside of the section is the serial number of the model A603133. On the body ring are placed the inscriptions Waterman and Made in France. The nib is solid gold, 18 carat, and despite the unusual shape, is relatively soft.

Ручка до мене потрапила із запитом на профілактику і прилаштуванням сучасного конвертера. Коли я отримав цю ручку я побачив що хтось достатньо вандально просто вбив всередину конвертер Parker Push-Slide. Мене одразу здивувало чому саме цей та я не придав цьому уваги, і лише згодом, коли я вже виконав більшу частину роботи по адаптації, я зрозумів чому саме цей конвертер, бо він має тонкий хвіст, який без перешкод влазить у токий корпус моделі.

This pen came to me with a request for service and the installation of a modern converter. When I received this pen, I saw that someone had simply vandalically driven a Parker Push-Slide converter inside. I was immediately surprised why this one was used and I did not pay attention to it, and only later, when I had already done most of the my work, I understood why this converter was used, because it has a thin tail that fits into the current slim body with plastic inset without any obstacles.

В якості основи я взяв сучасну конструкцію конвертера, розібрав носик і відповідно до металевий втулці створив нову під формат CF. Але довелось стоншити металеву муфту конвертера, поки я ще мріяв розмістити його в оригінальному корпусі.

I took a modern converter design as a basis, disassembled the nipple and, having examined the metal sleeve, created a new nose for CF format. But I had to thin the metal sleeve when I still dreamed of placing it in the original body.

Коли я усвідомив що існуючий корпус не можліво модернісувати під новий конвертер через пластикові внутрощі, я вирішив створити власний корпус з ебоніту майже в ті самі розміри, але трохи довший на необхідну довжину. Звісно можна було б додати латунне навершя щоб відтворити оригінальний дизайн, але я не став цього робити.

When I got that the original body could not be modded to the new converter, I decided to create my own ebonite body in almost the same dimensions, but a little longer to the required length. Yes, I could have added a brass top to recreate the original design, but I didn’t do that.

Додатково, про всяк випадок, я створив ще картридж формата CF як що власнику буде потрібно користуватись оригінальним корпусом.

And additionally, just in case, I created a CF format cartridge in case the owner wants to use the original body.

Загальні оригінальні розміри: довжина у складеному вигляді — 135 мм (модернізований 142 мм), без ковпачка — 122 мм (модернізований – 129 мм). Діаметр корпусу — 10,5 мм, у місці хвату — 8 мм. Повна вага — 20,2 г (мій ебонітовий корпус із модернізованим конвертером – 19 г), без ковпачка — 13.7 г (мій ебонітовий корпус із модернізованим конвертером – 12.4 г).

Overall original dimensions: folded length – 135 mm (modded 142 mm), without cap – 124 mm (modded – 129 mm). Body diameter – 10.5 mm, at the grip – 8 mm. Full weight – 20.2 g (my ebonite body with upgraded converter – 19 g), without cap – 13. 7 g (my ebonite body with upgraded converter – 12.4 g).

Ця ручка била представлена у 1953 році як відповідь на революційну модель Parker 51, це до того як Марсель Бік почав нищити компанію Waterman своїми долларовими кульковими ручками. Так вона не мала схожого закритого пера, але також мала кілька інновацій. По-перше перо було щось середне між інкрустованим пером Sheaffer та звичайним знімним відкритим пером, а саме на салазках. По друге це було інноваційна картрилжна система із поліпропіленовими змінними капсулами з чорнил яка дала поштовх к розвитку сучасних картриджно-конвертерних систем. До речі, саме на моделі C/F вперше з’явився знаменитий роздвоєний кліп Waterman, який досі є візитівкою бренду.

Дизайн цієї моделі приписують Гарлі Ерлу, конструктору автомобілів General Motors, творцю Corvette та багатьох інших знакових автомобілів, хоча в патентах ручки зазначени імена Дональда Янга, Роберта Планхолта та Фредеріка Герцлера, які тоді працювали в студії Ерла. тож, ймовірно, дизайн був створений саме цими людьми. Але інкрустовані накладки і форма пера чітко дає розуміння що надихались вони саме автомобільними трендами у дизайні. Оскільки пізніше з’явились пера схожі на ці у богатьох інших брендів таких як Pilot, Lamy, Platinum, Pelikan, можна сказати що ця модель випереджала свій час. Цікаво що Паркер відреагував на це, зменшивши товщину Parker 51 та запровадивши картридж у моделі Parker 61 у 1956 році, хоча вона і не стала кокурентом CF.

Перші партії випущені в США мали всьо 4 дизайни із вартістю $5.95 за 595 модель з пером із нержавіючої сталі, $8.75 за 875 модель з 14-каратним пером та хромованим ковпачком, $12.5 за 1250 модель із 14-каратним пером та срібним ковпачком та $24.75 за 1500 модель в позолоченому корпусі. В США виробництво припинили у 1957 році, але сама модель Waterman CF була знята з виробництва у 1972 році, хоча по чуткам на деяких фабриках(Канада, Франція Великобританія) продовжувалась до початку 80х.

A minuts of history:
This pen was introduced in 1953 as a response to the revolutionary Parker 51 model, before Marcel Bick began to destroy the Waterman company with his dollar ballpoint pens. So it did not have a similar hooded nib, but it also had several innovations. Firstly, the nib was something between an inlaid Sheaffer nib and typical open nib which can be removed, namely inset or slide on. Secondly, it was an innovative cartridge system with polypropylene replaceable ink capsules that gave impetus to the development of modern? whell known us, cartridge-converter systems. By the way, it was on the C/F model that the famous Waterman double framed clip first appeared, which is still the brand’s calling card.

The design of this model is attributed to Harley Earl, a General Motors car designer, the creator of the Corvette and many other iconic cars, although the pen patents list the names of Donald Young, Robert Planholt and Frederick Herzler, who worked in Earl’s studio at those time. so, probably, the design was created by these people. But the inlaid linings and the shape of the pen clearly give an understanding that they were inspired by automotive trends in design. And later pens similar to these appeared in many other brands such as Pilot, Lamy, Platinum, Pelikan, so we can say that this model was ahead of its time. Interestingly, Parker responded to this by reducing the thickness of the Parker 51 and introducing also cartridge in pen like Parker 61 model in 1956, although it did not become a competitor to the CF.

The first batches released in the US had only 4 designs with a price tag of $5.95 for the 595 model with a stainless steel nib, $8.75 for the 875 model with a 14-karat nib and chrome cap, $12.5 for the 1250 model with a 14-karat nib and sterling silver cap and $24.75 for the 1500 model in a rolled-gold body design. Production in the US ceased in 1957, but the Waterman CF model itself was discontinued in 1972, although it is rumored that some factories (Canada, France, UK?) continued until the early 80s.

Перо я теж налаштовував, бо ручка була трохи втомлена та мала сліди втручання, але перевірити її я вирішив одразу із модернізованою системою конвертера, а не з картриджем.

I also corrected and adjusted nib because the pen was a bit tired and had traces of tampering, but I decided to test it with the upgraded converter system yet, not with the cartridge.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною становить 0,5 мм. Натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію лише до 0.8 мм. Зворотний бік пише лінією 0,4 мм.

The width of an ordinary line by the right side is – 0.5 mm. Pressing allows to increase this line just to 0.8 mm. The reverse side writes by line width of 0.4 mm.

В решті: У мене ніколи не було бажання мати цю модель, але я часто зцстрічав скарги в мережі що дуже важко знайти оригінальні картриджи, аналогів яких просто не існує. Так, модернізація конвертера під оригінальний корпус потребує ще пошуку підходячого і подальших досліджень при бажанні використання із оригінальним корпусом, але як що корпус не золотий, або срібний, то нове тіло працює добре і виглядає прийнятно.

At the end: I never had a desire to have this model, but I often came across complaints on the Internet that it is very difficult to find original cartridges, analogues of which simply do not exist. Yes, upgrading the converter to the original body still requires finding a suitable converter and further research, but if your body is not gold, silver or steel guilloched, the new ebonite body works well and enought comfortable.
