(own) Andrew Lensky Modular notebook Hardcover

if the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain. I was thinking before 2022 about designing and ordering a custom cover for my needs (for my notebooks which I use), although at that time I dreamed of a true leather cover in a vintage-adventure style. But I couldn’t imagine an overall design with convenient combination of notebooks and cover, and I didn’t decide on the final style, and besides, I couldn’t find a craftsman who could help me.

Як що гора не йде до Ходжі Насреддіна, то тоді Ходжа йде до гори:)). Я ще до 22 року міркував над тим, щоб спроектувати та замовити індивідуальну обкладинку для моїх потреб (для зошитів якими я користуюсь), хоча я тоді мріяв про шкіряну обкладинку у вінтажно-пригодницкому стилі. Але я так і не вигадав дизайн для зручного поєднання зошитів та обкладинки, та не визначився із остаточним стилем, ну і до того я так і не знайшов майстра хто б міг мені допомогти.

Нещодавно мені випадково Інстаграм чи Фейсбук підсунув рекламу якоїсь обкладинки, потім я пошукав які існують загалом дизайни і вирішив що я сам можу власноруч спроектувати що буде зручно саме мені. Мені сподобався один дизайн із кріпленням на скобах, тож я вирішив взяти цю ідею за основу і зробити власну модульну систему.

Recently, I accidentally saw an advertisement for a cover on Instagram or Facebook, then I searched for designs that existed and decided that I could design one that would be convenient for me. I liked one design with brackets, so I decided to take this idea as a basis and make my own modular system.

Система легко модифікується із 1 зошита на 96 аркушів чи 2 на 48 аркушів на 2 зошити по 96 аркушів чи 4 по 48 аркушів. Спочатку я зробив обкладинку на один зошит, але врешті модифікував на 2, тому що я постійно користуюсь двома коли налаштовую чи тестую ручки. Один зошит у мене для чистових записів, а інший як чернетка, коли я знаходжусь в процесі налаштування ручок/пер.

The system is easily modified from 1 notebook of 96 sheets or 2 of 48 sheets to 2 notebooks of 96 sheets or 4 of 48 sheets. I originally made the cover for one notebook, but eventually modified it to 2 because I always use two when I’m adjusting, tuning or reviewing/testing pens. I have one notebook for final notes and other as a rough draft when I’m in the process of grinding/tuning nibs.

На відміну від пропозицій в неті де автори пропонують друкувати позначки до вмісту для зошитів(обкладинок), я вирішив зробити універсальний слот який можна підписати власноруч на папері.

Unlike suggestions on the web where authors suggest printing notes about contents for notebooks (covers), I decided to make a universal slide-slot that you can sign yourself on paper.

Додатково я розробив кліпси для притискання обкладинок зошитів до твердої зовнішньої обкладинки, які додатково ще можуть виконувати функцію закладок.

Additionally, I developed clips for pressing notepad covers to the hard outer cover, which can also function as bookmarks.

Ну і не знаю навіщо, скоріше внаслідок того що інші це зробили, я розробив підставку для обкладинки. Спочатку я вирішив що це цілком зайвий елемент, бо сценаріїв за яким може знадобиться встановити зошити для демонстрації вкрай мало, але потім вирішив що це необов’язково може бути демонстрація зошита. Підставку можна використовувати для зручного розташування смартфона чи ще чогось що може знадобиться під час нотування.

And, I don’t know why, more likely because others did, I designed a stand for the cover who place into cover. After make it, first I thought it was a completely unnecessary element, because there are very few scenarios where you might need to set up notebooks for demonstration to others, but then I decided that it might not necessarily be a demonstration of the notebook. The stand can be used to conveniently place a smartphone or book, or something else that you might need while taking notes.

Також я зробив змінні тримачі для письмових приладів, буть то чорнильна ручка, чи механічний олівець, чи будь що інше. Достатньо знати лише необхідний діаметр та форму і можна створити необхідний тримач який буде кріпитись безпосередньо до обкладинки і бути завжди поруч.

I also made interchangeable holders for writing tools: fountain pens, mechanical pencils, or anything else. All you need to know is the required diameter and shape and it possibly creates the necessary holder that will attach directly to the cover and be always together.

Мені вистачило одного дня, щоб визначити деякі недоліки та внести корективи і виготовити ще декілька додатків.

It took me one day to identify some flaws, make adjustments, and additional a few items.

По-перше, гумки для тримання зошитів мають з’єднувальні втулки які краще за вузли, але вони ширші за діаметр гумки тому створюють неприємні розширення у середині зошитів коли обкладинка закрита. Я вирішив їх винести на сторону корінця та сховати у відповідні канавки.

First, the rubber bands for holding notebooks have connecting bushes which are better than knots, but they are wider than rubbers outer diameter, so they create unpleasant expansions in the middle of the notebooks when the cover is closed. I decided to move them to the spine side and hide them in the corresponding grooves.

Окрім притискачів обкладинок-закладок я вирішив зробити ще додатково звичну закладку.

In addition to the notepad cover’s clips, I decided to make an additional usual bookmark.

Обкладинка на два 96 аркушевих зошита виявилась достатньо товстою, то я вирішив створити тримач для механічного олівця безпосередньо в габаритах обкладинки.

The cover for two 96-sheet notebooks turned out to be quite thick, so I decided to create a mechanical pencil holder directly inside cover dimensions.

Додаткова функція: оскільки обкладинка тверда, то зошитом можна користуватись на будь-якій м’якій поверхні: на конференціях/симпозіумах на колінах, в готельному номері на ліжку, в походах чи кемпінгах на траві, тощо.

Additional feature: because the cover is hard, the notebook can be used on any soft surface: at conferences/symposia on your lap, in a hotel room on the bed, on hikes or camping on the grass, etc.

Я використовую шкільні/студентські зошити на 96 аркушів розміром 17х20см (170х202мм).

I use school/student notebooks with 96 sheets by overall dimension 17x20cm (170x202mm/6.7×8″).

Update 05.08.2025:

На прохання одного із підписників зробив спрощену версію для самозбірок із паперу А4 формату складеного навпіл. Корінець на 4 гумки, тобто можна вкласти 4 збірки складених А4 листків, нема підставки, габарити внутрішнього простору 230х160 мм, тобто по 10 мм додаткового простору із кожної із 3 х сторін, цього достатньо для закладок або тримача олівця. Живої обкладинки ще нема, але 3Д проєкт повністю підготовлений.

At the request of one of the subscribers, I made a simplified version for self-assembly from half-folded A4 pages. The spine has 4 grooves for elastic bands, so, it can insert 4 sets of folded A4 sheets, there is no stand, the internal dimensions are 230×160 mm, so is, 10 mm of additional space on each of the 3 sides, this is enough for bookmarks or pencil holder. There is no real made cover yet, but the 3D project is fully prepared.
