Pilot Super 200 (E-200) / complex repair

Hello FP community! If anyone was looking for the predecessors to the Elite S series, the Super series was just the thing. This pen came to me for restoration in a shabby condition, but in the end it became a beautiful instrument.

Привіт суспільство! Якщо хтось шукав попередників серії Elite, то як раз серія Super була саме ними. Ця ручка до мене потрапила на реставрацію в жихливому стані, але в підсумку стала гарним інструментом.

Pilot Super 200 E-200 w|Script 14K M nib (made in Japan) EH27 27.08.1964

Форма цієї моделі стала відправною точкою для цілого покоління ручок, не знаю як її схарактеризувати, але швидше за все вона схожа на жіночий палець із нігтиком наприкінці. Матеріал корпусу – чорний пластик із ковпачком з алюмінію покритий кольором Champagne Gold. Система заправки – власно піпетка, яку компанія назвала як перемикач(switch filler) чи чверть-заправник(quarter-filler та вона повністю відсутня в цієї ручки). Ковпачок на терті із плавним закриттям без жодного кліку наприкінці.

The shape of this model became the starting point for a whole generation of fountain pens design, I don’t know how to describe this shape, but most likely it resembles a woman’s finger with a nail. The body material is black plastic with an aluminum cap coated in Champagne Gold.. The filling systemis actually based on sac, which the company called a switch filler or quarter-filler (and it is lost in this pen).. Cap on friction with smooth closing without any click at the end.

З прикрас, окрім E Pilot на ковпачку, на корпусі присутня назва моделі Pilot Super 200 та дата створення ручки EH27. Але із цикавинок, ручка використовує не типову систему подачи чорнил до пера. У цієї моделі фідер не контактує безпосередньо з поверзнею пера, натомість він підводить чорнило до матеріалю щось накшталт губки у фломастері, яка вже розташована безпосередньо під шілиною пера. Система дивна, але вона працює, хоча, мабуть із вибором чорнила треба бути обережним.

Of the decorations, in addition to E Pilot on the cap, the body contains the model name Pilot Super 200 and the datecode EH27. But among the quirks, this pen uses an unusual ink supply system to the nib. In this model, the feed does not contact the nib surface directly, instead it supplies the ink to the material, something like a sponge in a felt-tip pen, which is already transferring directly to the nibs slit. The system is strange, but it works, although, apparently, you need to be careful with the choice of ink.

Перо: за формою це перо має назву “нігтик”. На перо нанесено Script, Pilot, 14K, ще один дихаючий отвір у формі місяця, made in Japan та трохи нижче ліворуч тавро торгівельної палати о золотовмісному продукту JIS, а праворуч дата виробництва 8.64 (Серпень 1964 року).

The nib: by the shape this nib called “nail”. On the nibs cover is marked Script, Pilot, 14K, another crescent-shaped breathing hole, made in Japan, and just below on the left is the JIS mark (Chamber of Commerce stamp for gold-containing products), and on the right is the date of manufacture 8.64 (August 1964).

Загальні розміри інструменту: повна довжина – 140 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 121 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 11 мм, у місці хвату – 9.8 мм. Вага – 10.8 г (без заправочної системи), а зі знятим ковпачком – 5.95 г.

Хвилинки історії:
У 1950-х і 1960-х роках Pilot інвестувала значні кошти у дослідження та розробки, представивши революційні продукти, такі як серія Super з 1955 по 1959 рік та пізніше першу у світі висувну перову ручку Capless у листопаді 1963 року. Ця лінійка Super це були останні моделі які мали свою систему заправки, але протягом її випуску, Pilot розробив і впровадила сучасну картриджно-конвертерну систему Pilot, яку ми використовуємо і зараз. Також серія Super положила початок появленню популярної лінійки кишенькових ручок Pilot Elite S Pocket Pen, яка популярна і досі.

Minutes of history:
In the 1950s and 1960s, Pilot invested heavily in research and development, introducing revolutionary products such as the Super series from 1955 to 1959 and later the world’s first retractable Capless fountain pen in November 1963. Also, in February 1962, the construction of a modern factory in Hiratsuka was completed. In 1955,
Pilot launched the “Super” series of pens as its workhorse, which included simple pens from Super 50 to the most prestigious адфпіршз Super Ultra 500 with huge nib. The Pilot Super 500, released in 1958, attracted attention with its distinctive feature: an extra-large inset nib that extended to the end of the section. This line was the then analogue of the modern Custom line. But the Super Ultra 500’s high production costs and avant-garde design made it financially unviable for Pilot, with each pen sold reportedly making a loss, making these pens rare and desirable collectors’ items today. But simpler models like the Super 200 became everyday work tools. These pens were equipped with 14K nibs in various formats from regular to Music, Falcon (flexible) or Script (rigid, hard). This line Super was the last pens with other filling system, but during its release, Pilot developed and introduced the modern Pilot cartridge-converter system that we still use today. The Super series also marked the beginning of the popular Pilot Elite S Pocket Pen line, which is still popular today.

До сучасної системи маркування дати виробництва використовувалась система позначення із двох літер та двох чисел, як у цієї ручки EH27. Перша літера позначала рік виробництва від А – 1960 рік, до Z – 1985. Друга літера позначала місяць виробництва від A то L для місяців із Січня до Грудня для фабрики у Хірацука та від M до X для фабрики у Токіо (Шимура). Число позначало день виробництва, тобто EH27 це 1964 рік, серпень, 27, фабрика Хірацука.

Before the modern system of datacode marking, Pilot used two-letter and two-number system, as in this case EH27. The first letter indicated the year of manufacture, from A to Z, which was 1960, to 1985. The second letter indicated the month of manufacture, from A to L for January to December for the Hiratsuka factory and from M to X for the Tokyo (Shimura) factory. The number indicated just a day of manufacture, so EH27 is 1964, August 27, Hiratsuka factory.

Цю ручку мені надіслали на реставрацію після вандального втручання. Скоріше за все ремонт був недоцільний, але я все ж таки його виконав, а оскільки оригінальна система живлення була втрачена я адаптував цю ручку під сучасну систему живлення Pilot. Ручка протестована з конвертером Con-40.

This pen was sent to me for restoration after vandalism. Most likely the repair was not rational, but I did it anyway, and since the original filling mechanism was lost, I modernized this pen to the modern Pilot filling system. The pen was tested with a Con-40 converter.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,4 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію до 0,7 мм. Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії 0.3 мм. Після додаткового полірування перо пише надзвичайно гладко.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.4 mm, while the pressure allows to increase this line to 0.7 mm. The reverse side writes a line thickness of 0.3 mm. After additional polishing, this nib writes extremely smoothly.

В решті: так, це не топова коштовна Pilot Super Ultra 500, і навіть не Pilot Custom K, але це надзвичайно проста, легка та гладка ручка із золотим пером. У мене небіло досвіду користування оригінальною системою заправки, але зараз, із звичайним картриджем чи конвертером нею користуватись дуже зручно.

At the end: yes, it’s not a top expensive Pilot Super Ultra 500, and not even a Pilot Custom K, but it’s an extremely simple, light pen with extremely smooth solid gold nib. I haven’t experience with original quarter-filler system, but now, with usual Pilot cartridge-converter system, it’s very convenient to use.

Як я зазначав вище, ручка була після вандалів.

As I mentioned above, this pen was vandalized.

Різьба була розтрощена, у фідера був відірвана задня частина і втулка для заправочної системи також була розчавлена.

The thread was damaged and cracked, the back of the feed was torn off, and the sleeve for switch filling system was also crushed.

З початку я хотів виточити новий фідер, але оглянувши і побачивши складну систему каналів вирішив модифікувати те що залишилось. Я підрізав залишки кінчика, щоб вивільнити ебонітовий стрижень який забиратимете чорнило і змоделював та зробив дві окремі муфти під оригінальний заправочний модуль і під сучасний формат Pilot. Залишки різблення я обережно відрізав, потім зробив нову втулку і вклеїв її у секцію. На відміну від лиття під тиском зробив різблення більш щільним, щоб позбутись неприємного люфту при закручуванні корпуса що властиво пластиковим ручкам цього часу.

I originally wanted to turn a new feed, but after inspecting it and seeing the complex system of channels, I decided to modify what was left. I cut off the remnants of the end to free the ebonite rod that would take the ink and designed and made two separate boushings for the original quarter-filling module and for the modern Pilot format. I carefully cut off the remaining threads, then made a new threaded sleeve and glued it into the section. Unlike cast molding parts, I made the threads tighter to get rid of the unpleasant clearance when twisting body on section that is inherent in plastic pens of this time.

Ось так виглядає секція із сучасним картриджем та конвертером Con-40. Спочатку я зробив втулку із білого пластику (зверху), а потім вирішив що це недоцільно і зробив із чорного (знизу) :))
