Pelikan MK10 (piston)

Today I want to show you probably one of the simplest (school) ones, beginner models of one of the most famous companies in Europe.

Pelikan MK10 with Pelikan thermic-regulator & steel gold-plated nib (made in Germany) 1973-1983

Можливо, для багатьох, особливо для тих, хто відвідує мій сайт, ця ручка не здасться цікавою, але я все ж дозволив собі її описати, раз вже вона потрапила мені до рук. Адже це історія, а, можливо, комусь вона все-таки стане в пригоді чи сподобається. Ручка має класичну поршневу систему у пластиковому корпусі. На відміну від більшості інших моделей, втулка поршня має ліве різблення.

Perhaps for many, especially for those who visit to my site, this pen will not seem interesting, but I decided describing it, because it has already come into my hands. After all, this is a story, and maybe someone will still find it useful or like it. This model has a classic piston system in a plastic body. Unlike most other models, the piston bushing has a left-hand thread.

На ковпачку є кільце золотого кольору з тисненням назви компанії “Pelikan – Germany”. Кліп з навершям утворює єдину литу конструкцію з тисненням логотипа на наверші та очима й дзьобом пелікана безпосередньо на кліпі. Уся конструкція виконана в жовтому кольорі. Сам ковпачок фіксується на терті, але доволі впевнено.

The cap have a golden ring with company name “Pelikan – Germany” imprint. The top and clip is a one-piece cast design with logo embossed on the top and pelican’s eyes and beak directly on the clip. The metal parts are gold-plated. The cap holds by friction, but quite securely.

Корпус ручки має оглядове віконце для контролю рівня чорнил. Ця модель випускалася у двох кольорових рішеннях: чорний із зеленим оглядовим віконцем та чорний із синім оглядовим віконцем.

The body has an ink window to check the ink level. This model was produced in two color solutions: black with green body and green ink window and black with blue ink window.

Тепер про перо: перо жовтого кольору. Інформація з інтернету свідчить, що це сталеве позолочене перо. Воно досить звичайне і жорстке, хоча при натисканні допускає невелику варіативність — на 2 розміри. Однак у таких випадках фідер не справляється із подачею чорнил, і через деякий час подача просто припиняється. На пері є тиснення логотипа компанії, а в хвостовій частині — тиснення F, що вказує на розмірність. Проте щільне зведення кінчиків пера в цій моделі дає лінію звичайною стороною 0,3 мм, а зворотною — навіть 0,2 мм, що більше відповідає розмірності EF.

Now about the nib: the nib is yellow. Information from the Internet says that this is a steel gold-plated nib. It is quite ordinary and rigid, although when pressed it allows a small variability – by 1-2 sizes. However, in such cases, the feed does not have time to filling nib, and after a while the supply simply stops. The nib is embossed company logo and in the tail part is embossed F to says about size of tip. Because the tines is pinched on this nib, a line by the right side was 0.3 mm with, and by reverse side – even 0.2 mm, which is more suitable to the EF.

Ручка досить довга та комфортно лежить у руці, навіть попри те, що вона тонша порівняно з іншими моделями серій 1xx, 2xx, 4xx тощо. Загальна вага ручки — 16 г, без ковпачка — 10 г. Довжина в закритому стані — 135 мм, зі знятим ковпачком — 126 мм.

The pen is quite long and feels comfortable in the hand, even though it is thinner compared to other models in the 1xx, 2xx, 4xx, etc. series. The total weight of the pen is 16 g, without the cap – 10 g. The length when closed is 135 mm, and without cap – 126 mm.

Як і належить, інструмент був протестований у роботі.

As it should be, the tool has been tested in work.

Хоча я не прихильник жорстких моноширинних пер, завдяки тонкій лінії цей інструмент чудово підходить для легких скетчів або малюнків із великою кількістю дрібних деталей, та уточнення в тінях можна виконувати в кілька проходів через ту ж саму тонкість лінії.

While I’m not a fan of stiff/rigid/hard monoline nibs, the thin line makes this tool great for sketches or drawings with lots of fine detail, and shadings can be done in several passes due to the same thinness of the line.

В підсумку: Попри простоту конструкції, жорсткість пера та доступну ціну, ручка Pelikan MK10 залишає дуже приємне враження. Вона акуратна, функціональна та має вінтажний шарм, що особливо зацікавить колекціонерів і шанувальників бренду Pelikan. З огляду на те, що ціни на аукціонах починаються від $20, це гідний екземпляр для своєї категорії. Тонка й акуратна лінія письма робить її зручною для повсякденного використання, особливо для тих, хто цінує мінімалізм і надійність.

At the end: despite the simplicity of the design, the stiffness of the nib and the lower price, the Pelikan MK10 pen leaves a very pleasant impression. It is neat, functional and has a vintage charm that will especially interest collectors and fans of the Pelikan brand. Given that auction prices start at $20, this is a decent specimen for its category. The thin and neat writing line makes it convenient for everyday journaling, especially for those who value minimalism and reliability.

Ця лінія бере початок з інженера-розробника Теодора Ковача — того самого, хто вигадав відому поршневу систему, патент на яку був придбаний Гюнтером Вагнером. Більше того, Ковач, як виявилося, “продавався у комплекті” з винаходом, ставши частиною команди Pelikan. Згодом він розробив систему “advanced conductive ink feeder”, пізніше запатентовану Pelikan під назвою “Pelikan thermic-regulator”.
Система була створена для полегшення заміни пера користувачем: тепер можна було легко встановити перо іншого розміру майже “при русі”. Перше застосування цієї технології відбулося в моделі Pelikan P1, представленій у вересні 1958 року. Вона нагадувала Parker 51 завдяки закритому дизайну пера.
У лютому 1965 року вийшла модель Pelikan M/MK з напіввідкритим, але ще округлим пером. У 1969 році були представлені ревізії з більш плоскими перами й кутоватим дизайном фідера, які запобігали неправильному встановленню пера.

Модель Pelikan P1 випускалася у двох варіантах:

Rolled Gold (позолочений нікелевий сплав);
Silvexa (нікелево-срібний сплав без позолоти).

Лінія Pelikan M/MK поділялася таким чином:

M (від Mechanics — моделі з поршневою системою, металевими ковпачками, включно з позолоченими);
MK (від Kunststoff — пластик, нім.) була бюджетним варіантом із пластиковими ковпачками.

Pelikan MK10 стала молодшою моделлю серії та позиціонувалася як студентська. Вона вважається прародителькою більш відомої моделі Pelikan 120.

And finally, Minutes of History:
This line originates from the development engineer Theodor Kovacs, the same person who invented the famous piston system, the patent for which was purchased by Gunther Wagner. Moreover, Kovacs, as it turned out, was “sold complete” with the invention, becoming part of the Pelikan’s team. He subsequently developed an “advanced conductive ink feed” system, later patented by Pelikan under the name “Pelikan thermic-regulator”.
The system was designed to facilitate nib exchanged by ordinary user: it was now possible to easily install a different nib size almost “when you drive”. The first application of this technology took place in the Pelikan P1 model, presented in September 1958. It resembled a Parker 51 due to its closed/hooded nib design.
In February 1965, the Pelikan M/MK model was released with a semi-open but still rounded arch nib. In 1969, revisions were introduced with more flatter nibs and an angled feed design to prevent nib misalignment.

The Pelikan P1 model was produced in two variants:

Rolled Gold (gilded nickel alloy);
Silvexa (nickel-silver alloy without gold plating).

The Pelikan M/MK line was divided as follows:

M (from Mechanics) — models with a piston system and metal caps, including gold-plated ones;
MK (from Kunststoff — plastic, German) was a budget version with plastic caps.

Pelikan MK10 became the starter model of the series and was positioned as a student model. It is considered the predecessor of the more famous Pelikan 120 model.

Так сталось що через 7 років до мене потрапила ще одна, майже така сама, перова ручка, але в іншій кольоровій схемі та з золотим пером.

It so happened that after 7 years I got another, almost the same, fountain pen, but in a different color scheme and with solid-gold nib.

Pelikan MK10 with Pelikan thermic-regulator & 14K nib (made in Germany) 1969-1983

Корпус ручки такий самий, довгастий, секція із віконцем та барелем скліяна та нерозбірна, форма схожа на гібрид між звичайною ручкою та настільною ручкою, хоча така модель теж існувала і мала літеру S наприкінці назви моделі (для прикладу MK10S). Тіло поршня має металеве стопорне кільце, сенс якого мені не зрозумілий, але як що його прибрати то можна суттєво збільшити внутрішній об’єм резервуара чорнил.

The body of the pen is the same, oblong, the section with the window and barrel is one complex piece and non-detachable, the shape is similar to a hybrid between usual fountain pen and deskpen, although such a model also was released by brand and had the letter S after model name (for example, MK10S). The piston body has a metal retaining ring, the meaning of which is not clear to me, but if remove it, it can significantly increase the internal volume of ink.

Кільце ковпачка має тиснення Germany Pelikan, а кліп зроблений у формі дзьоба пелікана.

The cap ring is embossed Germany Pelikan and the clip is made in the shape of a pelican’s beak.

Перо: 100% жорстке, тобто саме цвях, але завдяки великому кінчику ковзає гладко. На перо нанесено 585, 14C, а в схованій частині Pelikan та HF, що скоріш за все означає Hard F.

The nib: is 100% hard, like a nail, but glides smoothly thanks to the big tip. The nib is marked 585, 14C, and in the hidden part Pelikan and HF, which most likely means Hard F.

Попередня та ця ручка являють собою другий варіант дизайну пера який вироблявся із 1969 по 1983 роки та прийшов на зміну ранньому дизайну, який мав більш закрите перо, та випускався із 1968 по 1970 роки.

The above pen and this pen represent the second design variation of the nib which was produced from 1969 to 1983 and replaced the earlier design which had a more hooded nib and was produced from 1968 to 1970.

Overall tool dimensions: folded length is – 132.5 mm, without cap – 125 mm. The diameter of the body is – 11.25 mm, at the grip – 9.5 mm. The weight of folded tool is – 14.8 g, and without cap – 8.3 g .

Загальні розміри інструменту: довжина складеного інструменту – 132.5 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 125 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 11.25 мм, у місці хвату – 9.5 мм. Вага складеного інструменту – 14.8 г, а зі знятим ковпачком – 8.3 г.

Ручку мені відправили на обслуговування із заклинівшим поршнем, після відновлення ручку перевірив вінтажним чорнилом Waterman Luminouse Blue.

This pen was sent to me for service with stuck piston, after repair I checked this pen by vintage Waterman’s Luminous Blue ink.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною становить 0,5 мм з вологою подачею, при цьому натиск дозволяє збільшити цю лінію лише до 0,6 мм)). Зворотний бік пише товщиною лінії близько 0.25 мм трохи гостро.

The width of the normal line by the right side is 0.5 mm with wet line, while the pressure allows to increase this line just to 0.6mm)). The reverse side writes a line thickness of 0.25 mm, a little crispy.

В решті: ручка виконана в дизайні свого часу та нагадує моделі Montblanc 12-34 але є значно дешевшою, завдяки простішим матеріалам та оформленю. Поршньова система та віконце моніторінгу чорнил є її здобутками.

At the end: the pen is made in the design of its time and resembles the famous Montblanc 12-34 models, but is much cheaper, thanks to simpler materials and design. The piston system and the ink window are its achievements.

В 1955 році Теодор Ковач розробив нову внутрішню систему подачі чорнила з додатковим резервуаром для вмісту надлишку чорнила. Pelikan зареєстрував цей патент у червні 1958 року як «Pelikan thermic-regulator».

Since 1955, Theodor Kovács had developed a new internal ink feed with an additional large reservoir for excess ink. Pelikan adopts the patent from June 1958 as the ‘Pelikan thermic-regulator’.

Миколу Кобільника, снайпера Окремого третього полку Сил спеціальних операцій впізнають за ведмежою лапою – боєць з позивним «Енейко» має унікальний кудлатий хутряний протез з пазурами. Про унікальний протез каже, що його зробили його друзі під спеціальне замовлення у Міннесоті, в США, fле це – парадний протез. Він його береже і не щодня вбирає. Микола на війні ще з 2014 року. Повномасштабне вторгнення, 24 лютого 2022 року, його застало на робочому місці, але йому навіть вдалося евакуювати родини своїх побратимів за кілька годин до того, як у населені пункти Київщини зайшли російські окупанти. За його словами, перші дні та тижні вторгнення росії в Україну було дуже боляче, і про це треба розповідати, аби ніколи не забути. Після визволення Київщини підрозділ Миколи Кобільника брав участь у боях за Мар’їнку, Лисичанськ, Сіверськодонецьк, Бахмут. Микола Кобільник після втрати ноги та протезування і реабілітації повернувся до виконання бойових завдань.

Mykola Kobilnyk, a sniper of the Separate Third Regiment of the Special Operations Forces, can be recognized by his bear’s paw – the fighter with the call sign “Eneyko” has a unique shaggy fur prosthesis with claws. About the unique prosthesis, he says that it was made by his friends under a special order in Minnesota, in the USA, but it is a holiday’s prosthesis. He takes care of it and does not use it every day. Mykola has been at war since 2014. A full-scale invasion, on February 24, 2022, caught him at his workplace, but he even managed to evacuate the families of his army brothers a few hours before the russian invaders entered the populated areas of Kyiv region. According to him, the first days and weeks of russia’s invasion of Ukraine were very painful, and it is necessary to tell about it so that it is never forgotten. After the liberation of Kyiv Oblast, Mykola Kobilnyk’s unit took part in the battles for Maryinka, Lysychansk, Siverskodonetsk, and Bakhmut. Mykola Kobilnyk returned to combat missions after losing his leg and undergoing prosthetics and rehabilitation.
