Today we have a very unusual review of an unusual tool. I never thought that I would do a description of a ballpoint pen, but nevertheless, I remembered that I once bought this device, but I never had how is right to use it. Through my incompetence and incomprehension, put it in the far corner of the table :). But now:

Сьогодні у нас дуже не звичайний огляд на не звичний інструмент. Ніколи не думав що робитиму опис кулькової ручки, але однак, згадав що колись купив цей прилад, але толково скористатися ним так і не довелося. Помикався та від невміння і нерозуміння відклав його в дальній кут стола:). Отже:

Wacom Inkling

– представляє собою складну електронну, зовні пластикову, конструкцію чорного кольору і призначений як інструмент для художників\дизайнерів\архітекторів, який дозволяє не тільки просто працювати по звичайному паперу, а ще й зберігати всі рухи і штрихи в електронному вигляді, включаючи натиск. Сам корпус ручки виконаний з матеріалу так званого софт-тач, але пластик прогумовано, як власне і всі професійні стілуси цієї компанії.

– is a complex electronic, externally plastic, black construction and is intended as a tool for artists\designers\architects, which allows not only to work on ordinary paper, but also to save all strokes in electronic form, including pressure. The body of the pen itself is made of the so-called soft-touch material, the plastic is rubberized, like all professional styluses of this company.

Весь комплект являє собою пластиковий пенал, всередині якого зберігається сам стилус, приймальний блок, інтерфейсний кабель підключення до ПК (стандартний mini-USB – USB), 4-е запасних стрижня та поглиблення для вилучення стрижня з ручки.

The whole set is a plastic case, inside which the stylus itself, the receiving unit, the interface cable for connecting to PC (standard mini-USB – USB), 4 refills and hole for removing the refill from the pen.

Окрім функції зберігання, пенал виконує функцію дока як зарядного пристрою для приймача та самого стилуса. У приймачі розташовується літій-іонна батарея, а в стилусі нікель-метало-гідридна розміру 1/3 ААА ємкістю 170мАч.

In addition to the save function, the pencil case doubles as a dock as a charger for receiver and  stylus itself. There is a lithium-ion battery in the receiver, and a nickel-metal hydride battery of size 1/3 AAA with 170 mAh capacity in the stylus.

Виробник заявляє, що на свіжій батареї стилус забезпечує 4 години безперервної роботи та 8 годин звичайної роботи художника\дизайнера\архітектора:).
При роботі виробник рекомендує тримати інструмент високим хватом що б не перекривати антену передавача (стилуса) яка розташовується в нижній частині, акурат навколо стрижня. Також виробник не рекомендує нічого розташовувати між стилусом і приймачем, як гумка або інша рука, щоб уникнути неточної роботи приладу, водночас виробник заявляє, що кілька пристроїв не можуть перешкодити роботі один одного. Приємною функцією в цьому плані є додатковий світлодіод на приймачі, який своїм блиманням відпрацьовує кожне розпізнане натискання.

The manufacturer claims that on full charge battery, the stylus works 4 hours of continuous work and 8 hours of normal artist/designer/architect work :).
When working, the manufacturer recommends holding the tool with a high grip so as not to block the antenna of transmitter (stylus), which is located in the lower part, right around the refill. Also, the manufacturer does not recommend placing anything between the stylus and receiver, such as eraser or another pen, in order to avoid inaccurate operation of the device. At the same time, the manufacturer states that several devices cannot interfere with each other’s operation. A nice feature in this regard is the additional LED on the receiver, which flashes every recognized press.

Щодо робочих стрижнів – у мене було встановлено стрижень чорний і це добре:) і мені здається що це звичайний кульковий стрижень. Скажу що чорнило виходить з якимось зусиллям (взагалі за півтора року я сильно відвик від кулькової ручки:)), проте це дає і перевагу, навіть на “відносно широкій” лінії (як видно з принту на стрижні розміру М) можна отримати відносно тонкий штрих для тіней (судячи з ескізу) :)).

Regarding the working refills – I had a black ink installed and it’s good 🙂 and I think it’s a regular ballpoint refill. I will say that the ink comes out with some effort (in a year and a half, I unlearned from the ballpoint pen), but it also gives an advantage, even on a “relatively wide” line (as can be seen from the print this is M size tip) you can get a relatively thin stroke for shading (judging from the sketch) :)).

Стрижень: металевий (латунний), довжина 67мм, діаметр 2.3мм. На стрижні є написи: MiniStar 1012, під цифрами чотири кружечки і в третьому рядку: D ISO 12757-2 DOC SWISS TC і розмірність M. Напис SWISS наштовхує на думку що для Wacom’a стрижні може виробляти швейцарська фабрика LNI з Женеви, – Ла Національ. Формат називається D1 і підійдуть будь-які стрижні цього стандарту. Сам я купив кілька китайських нонеймових стрижнів (під Cross) і дорогих японських Mitsubishi UNI SXR-200-05, але ще не дійшли руки спробувати.

Refill: metal (brass), length 67mm, diameter 2.3mm. Body have inscriptions: MiniStar 1012, under the numbers there are four circles and in the third line: D ISO 12757-2 DOC SWISS TC and size M. The inscription SWISS suggests that these refills for Wacom can be produced by Swiss factory LNI from Geneva, – La National. The format is called D1 and any refills of this standard will do. I bought a few Chinese nonamed refills (for Cross) and expensive Japanese Mitsubishi UNI SXR-200-05, but I haven’t gotten around to trying them yet.

Незважаючи на свої значні габарити в 156мм довжини і 12мм діаметра в місці хвата, інструмент важить всього 22гр, при цьому досить комфортно збалансований.

Despite its big size of 156 mm in length and 12 mm in diameter at the grip, the tool weighs only 22 g, while it is quite comfortably balanced.

Після деяких мук по пожвавленню акумулятора, що явно втомився від часу, мені таки вдалося зробити повноцінний скетч з його використанням.

After some efforts to reborn the battery, which was clearly tired of time, I did to make a full-fledged sketch using it.

Текст природно написаний не ним, просто щоб не робити дві роботи, поєднав 2 в 1:).

В решті: я ще не знаю, що з цим робити і як його можна використовувати:). На етапі експорту параметрів ніяких немає, після експорту навіть зменшуючи товщину лінії до 0.1pt прийнятного результату в скетчі я не спостерігаю – він дуже далекий від ескізу на папері. Порадувала можливість у процесі малювання створювати різні шари для однієї роботи на які можна розносити скажемо роботу з волоссям, тонуванням обличчя і т.д., але з вищевказаних причин досить широкої лінії все це перетворюється на кашу, де навіть використання інформації про тиск не приносить бажаного результату. Можливо якщо екстраполювати ескіз з формату А4 до А1 чи А0, то можна буде і натиск використовувати, але поки що ні про що. Ну а через товщину лінії “М”, мені здається ескіз формату А5 теж буде проблематично здійснювати через неможливість опрацювання дрібниць.

Ну от якось так, сподіваюся ніхто не нудьгував. Звичайно це не перо, хоча ідеологічно прикольний гаджет:).

At the end: I still don’t know what to do with it and how it can be used :). At the export stage, there are no any parameters for convert, after export, even reducing the thickness of the line to 0.1pt, I don’t see an acceptable result in the sketch – it is very far from the sketch on paper. I was pleased with the possibility in the process of drawing to create different layers for one work, on which you can spread, say, work with hair, shading the face, etc., but for the above-mentioned reasons of a rather and wide line, all this turns into porridge, where even the use of pressure information does not bring the desired result. Maybe if extrapolate the sketch from A4 format to A1 or A0, it will be possible to use pressure, but so far nothing. Well, because of the thickness line is “M”, it seems to me that the A5 format sketch will also be problematic due to the impossibility of working out small details.

Well, somehow, I hope no one was bored. Of course, it’s not a fountain pen, although it’s an ideologically very interest gadget :).

Неочікувано, після 4х років, я знову вирішив випробувати цей гаджет, коли вирішив закінчити скечбук присвячений Ужгороду (окремий пост буде пізніше). Але цього разу я вирішив таки протестувати безіменні китайські стрижні що я придбав тоді.

Unexpectedly, after 4 years, I decided to try this gadget again, when I decided to finish Uzhhorod sketchbook (a personal post will later). But this time I decided to test the nonamed Chinese refills that I bought then.

Дівовижно але стрижні не висохли за чей час і відчувались як нові. Всього я придбав 20шт. Початково на кінці стрижнів ще були пластикові головки зі шліцом під хрестову викрутку, але вони дуже легко знялись.

Amazingly, but the refills did not dry out in all this time and felt like new. I bought a total of 20 pcs. Initially, the ends of the rods still had plastic heads with cross slot for screwdriver, but they came off very easily.

Цікаво що кінцівка оригінального стрижня трохи завальцьована, а китайського ні, від чого китайський спочатку зовсім не тримався в Wacom Inkling, але трохи обтиснувши кінцівку плоскогубцями цю проблему можна легко вирішити. В іншому стрижні повністю ідентичні.

It is interesting that the end of the original Swiss refills is slightly rolled, but the Chinese one is not, which is why the Chinese refills did not fixed in Wacom Inkling at first, but by pressing the end a little with pliers, this problem can be easily solved. Otherwise, the rods are completely identical.

After changing refill, I started testing.

Звичайна кулькова паста доволі сильно відбиває бокове освітлення та у сприйнятті втрачає свій колір.Ось так приблизно виглядає різниця.

Ordinary ballpoint paste reflects side lighting quite strongly and loses its color in perception. This is roughly how the difference looks like.

Для правильного порівняння я додатково зробив ескіз оригінальними, швейцарським чорнилом на тому ж папері.

For a right comparison, I additionally made the sketch by the original, Swiss ink on the same paper.

На цьому, мабуть і усе, хоча сподіваюсь ще руки дійдуть ще до Mitsubishi Uni.:))

В решті 2: забув додати із неприємного – за 4 роки не коритсування ручкою, покриття софт-тач на моєму Inkling стало м’яким та ліпким, тобто зіпсувалось. Звичайні Wacom стилуси мої в більш гарному стані, хоча їм більше років і користуюсь я їми частіше.

At the end 2: I forgot to add from the cons – in 4 years of not using this pen, the soft-touch coating on my Inkling tool became very soft and sticky, that is, it deteriorated. My regular Wacom styluses are in better condition, although they are older and I use them more often.
