(modern) Sheaffer Legacy Heritage

Hello to all! I give credit to this brand for its significant contribution to the history of fountain pens, but I have never had a strong desire to purchase pens from this brand. What I dislike the most is inlaid nibs, probably because I understand that they are the most problematic to service. But still, I have one review of vintage model, and this one will be the first for modern one.

Проте, у мене є один огляд на вінтажну модель, а цей буде перший на сучасну.

Sheaffer Legacy Heritage (made in USA)

Форма цієї ручки циліндрична з трохи звуженими і пласкими закінченнями. Основний матеріал виготовлення – латунь, при цьому корпус покритий чорним лаком, що нагадує органічний (китайський?). Ковпачок покритий паладієм з позолоченими 22к акцентами. Секція зроблена з пластику чорного кольору. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерна, власного пропрієтарного формату Sheaffer. Ковпачок на терті з легким клацанням.

The shape of this pen is cylindrical with slightly tapered and flat ends. The main material is brass, while the body is covered by black lacquer reminiscent of organic (Chinese lacque?) and the cap is palladium plated with 22k gold-plated accents. The section is made of black plastic. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Sheaffer format. Cap on friction with slight click at the end.

На широкому позолоченому кільці розташоване ім’я бренду – Sheaffer. На кліпі, у верхній частині, знаходиться відома “біла крапка”, яка колись була знаком довічної гарантії, а з правого боку також нанесено ім’я бренду Sheaffer.

On a wide goldplated ring is the brand name – Sheaffer. On the clip, at the top is the famous “white dot” sign , which was once the sign of a lifetime warranty, and on the right side of the clip, also have the name of brand – Sheaffer.

Цікавою особливістю є обтяжувач у вигляді латунного кільця, розташованого всередині, у верхній частині корпусу, при цьому відповідна різьба для сталевої секції зроблена з пластику. Центр ваги ручки, навіть без надітого ковпачка, зміщений на 2/5 до кінця корпусу.

An interesting feature is the weighting agent in the form of a brass ring located inside, in the upper part of the body, while the collar thread to the steel section is made of plastic. The center of weight of the pen, even without the posted cap, is shifted by 2/5 to the end of the body.

Перо: власне, родзинкою моделі та відмінною особливістю бренду є інкрустоване в корпус золоте 18-каратне перо стрілоподібної форми. На перо нанесені: Sheaffer, під ним зліва ювелірне клеймо STE◊PF в овалі та 18K, а справа ® та 750 – проба золота. Розмір пера наносився фарбою на зворотний бік секції, але в цьому випадку розмір стерся від часу.

The nib: the real highlight of this model and distinctive feature of all Sheaffer brand is an 18 carat solid gold arrow-shaped inlaid nib. On the nib are: Sheaffer, under it on the left side is the STE◊PF jewelry mark in oval and 18K, and on the right ® and 750 – samples of gold. The nib dimension was applied by paint on the back side of section, but in this case the dimension has worn off over time.

Докладну історію компанії Sheaffer я публіковував у пості про вінтажну Sheaffer Triumph Sovereign II. Ця модель є черговою «спадщиною» історичної моделі, відомої як Sheaffer Pen For Man (PFM). Sheaffer прийняла це рішення як для зниження вартості ручки за рахунок видалення системи заповнення Touchdown, так і для розширення привабливості флагманської моделі з більш зручною для споживача системою заправки.
Оригінальний PFM значно легший, ніж Legacy, і має більш складну систему наповнення з висувною трубкою, що дозволяє заправляти ручку, не занурюючи перо у флакон із чорнилом. Існує п’ять основних моделей PFM:

Minutes of history:
I published a detailed history of the Sheaffer company in the post of vintage Sheaffer Triumph Sovereign II. This model is another “legacy” of the historical model known as the Sheaffer Pen For Man (PFM). The PFM was introduced in 1959 as the oversized model of Sheaffer’s highly successful Snorkel line. However, there was little interest in this new pen in the 60s and production seems to have been discontinued in 1968. Now large pens are much more popular, so company has decided to relaunch the PFM design with name Legacy. Since its introduction in 1995, Sheaffer has gone in many different directions with the Legacy pen profile. The first pens were very traditional, borrowing heavily from the PFM they were inspired by. The first Legacy line had models that clearly emulated the all black plastic PFM III, the stainless cap PFM IV, and the gold plated cap PFM V. With the Legacy 2 line, introduced in 1999, Sheaffer branched out with more adventurous finishes, and yet stayed close to the “sensible” and “serious” look. Big changes occurred at the top of the Sheaffer line in 2003. The Touchdown filling system, an efficient system introduced by Sheaffer in 1949 and used in many Sheaffer pens for decades, was dropped in favor of a conventional cartridge / converter system. This third generation Legacy was dubbed Heritage, turning the page on the very PFM-like original Legacy, and the more rounded Legacy 2. Sheaffer made this decision both to reduce the cost of the pen by removing the Touchdown filling system and to broaden the appeal of the flagship pen with a more consumer friendly cartridge / converter system.
The original PFM is significantly lighter than the Legacy, and has a far more sophisticated filling system with an extending “Snorkel” filling tube that allows the pen to be filled without wetting (or having to blot dry) the nib. There are five basic PFM models:

PFM I palladium-silver nib, plastic cap with polished stainless steel cap band and clip
PFM II palladium-silver nib, brushed stainless steel cap, polished stainless steel clip
PFM III 14K gold nib, plastic cap with gold filled cap band and clip
PFM IV 14K gold nib, stainless cap with gold filled cap band and clip
PFM V 14K gold nib, gold filled cap in lined pattern, gold filled clip.

PFMs were sold in several colors: black, dark blue, burgundy, green, and grey. Transparent demonstrators were also made, but not sold to the general public.

This pen had periodic hard starts due to the presence of a baby bottom and slight pinching of the tines. After correction, the pen was tested in work.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає 0,5 мм, при цьому перо м’яке і натиск дозволяє збільшити лінію до 0,9 мм. Зворотна сторона дає тонку суху лінію шириною 0,3 мм, але лише при сповільненому русі. Прямою стороною подача обильна, лінія соковита.

The width line by the right side is 0.5mm, while soft nib allows by pressure to increase the line up to 0.9mm. The reverse side gives a thin dry line 0.3mm wide only when slowly writing. The flow is juicy by regular side.

В підсумку: велика і досить важка ручка з гладкою і звуженою секцією, для мене не дуже зручна як за формою, так і за балансом. Особлива фірмова курноса форма пера постійно у моїй голові прагнется бути скорегованою до звичайногї форми дзьобом:)). Крім того, конструкція секції не передбачає легкого розбирання, що означає, що очищення системи у разі забруднення буде доволі складним. А з того, що мені дійсно сподобалося, це блискучий полірований палладієвий ковпачок з позолоченими акцентами:). Так що я змушений визнати, що ця сучасна ручка дуже індивідуальна, і перед покупкою вкрай бажано спробувати її в своїх руках.

At the end: a large and rather heavy pen with smooth and tapered section, for me it is not very comfortable both in shape and in balance. The branded shape of nib is constantly spinning in my head to correct curvature and make the correct bend (beak :)). Moreover, the design of the section does not available for easy disassembly, which means that cleaning system in case of clogging will be very hard. But what I really liked was the shiny polished palladium plated cap with gold plated accents :). So I have to admit that this modern pen is very amateurish and I definitely recommend trying it in your own hands before buying.

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara) was a British singer, songwriter, record producer and lead vocalist of the rock band Queen. Regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, he was known for his flamboyant stage persona and four-octave vocal range. Mercury defied the conventions of a rock frontman, with his highly theatrical style influencing the artistic direction of Queen.
Born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Parsi-Indian parents, he attended English-style boarding schools in India from the age of eight and returned to Zanzibar after secondary school. In 1964, his family fled the Zanzibar Revolution, moving to Middlesex, England. Having studied and written music for years, he formed Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Mercury wrote numerous hits for Queen, including “Killer Queen”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Somebody to Love”, “We Are the Champions”, “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. His charismatic stage performances often saw him interact with the audience, as displayed at the 1985 Live Aid concert. He also led a solo career and served as a producer and guest musician for other artists.
Mercury died in 1991 at age 45 owing to complications from AIDS. He confirmed the day before his death that he had contracted the disease, having been diagnosed in 1987. Mercury continued to record with Queen following his diagnosis, and he was posthumously featured on the band’s final album, Made in Heaven (1995). In 1992, his tribute concert was held at Wembley Stadium. His career with Queen was dramatised in the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
As a member of Queen, Mercury was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1990, he and the other Queen members were awarded the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and one year after his death Mercury was awarded it individually. In 2005, Queen were awarded an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2002, Mercury ranked number 58 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.
