Pilot MYU-701 (M-350SS)

Pilot MYU-701 (M-350SS) Stainless Steel pen with integrated nib (made in Japan) 1978

Почнемо з того, що ця ручка так званого стандарту “pocket” (кишенькова). Виконана в футуристичному дизайні як для свого, так і для нашого часу. Інструмент зроблений майже повністю із нержавіючої сталі. Ключовою особливістю є інтегроване в корпус (section) перо, яке є з ним єдиним цілим. Сама форма нагадує чи то ракету-спис, чи то акулу без плавників, чи то винищувач (з віртуальними крилами) — стрімка, хижа і агресивна. Сам корпус не глянцевий, nа має характерну сатинову текстуру, що чудово приховує дрібні подряпини. Система заправки пропрієтарна, картриджно-конвертерна, формату Pilot, та базово комплектувалася squeeze-конвертером CON-20. Ковпачок на терті, який утримується трьома виступами, розташованими на секції.

Let’s start. This pen is the pocket pen standard. Made in a futuristic design for past and for the present. The tool is made from brushed stainless steel. The main feature is the integrated nib into the section, which is one part with pen body. The form itself resembles either a rocket-spear, a shark without fins, or a fighter (with virtual wings). The filling system is cartridge-converter by proprietary of Pilot format, and in base complete by squeeze-converter CON-20. The cap on friction and hold by 3 additional ears at the end of the section.

Сам корпус не відрізняється ні прикрасами, ні великою кількістю інформації. З розпізнавальних знаків біля нижньої кромки ковпачка знаходиться напис PILOT, а на пружині конвертера є тиснення PRESS HERE (тисни тут), під яким розташований текст PILOT Japan. Оскільки перо є частиною корпусу і не передбачає заміни, його маркування винесено до “вушок” утримання ковпачка. У даному випадку це M H478, що вказує на розмір пера М і те, що ця модель була виготовлена на заводі Хіратсуко (Hiratsuka Plant) у квітні 1978 року.

The tool contains a minimum of text on the body. Only the “Pilot” at the base of the cap, PRESS HERE and Pilot Japan are on the spring of the converter’s and <M> H478 is placed at the bottom of the grip (where M is nib size, H is Hiratsuka Plant and 478 is 1978, April is date of manufacured).

З додаткових елементів, що відрізняються від загального дизайну, є ще хромований кліп та заглушка на навершії ковпачка, розташований в заглибині, чорного кольору, ймовірно, виготовлений із пластику. Фідер — класичний для Pilot, мало чим відрізняється за конструкцією від фідерів Pilot 78G або сучасного Pilot Metropolitan. Він зроблений з того ж, трохи прозорого матеріалу, і зазвичай має подачу вище середнього :). Фідер можна вставити в корпус лише в одному положенні, оскільки всередині корпусу є спеціальний виступ-направляюча для нього.

Of the additional elements there is a chrome clip and a small black pancake on the top of the cap(I think is plastic). The feed – the classic Pilot, some like to Pilot 78G or modern Pilot Metropolitan, is made of the same, slightly transparent material with “moderate+” flow ink:). The feed can be installed only in one position, because inside the body there is a special key for it.

Перо: власне, перо, як я вже згадував вище, не змінне і інтегроване в сам корпус, точніше становить з ним єдине ціле, за винятком твердосплавної напайки на кінчику. Перо абсолютно жорстке і має дуже гладке ковзання. Зворотна сторона має майданчик в стилі Montblanc, але не призначена для письма, оскільки сильно шкребе (а шкода). Розмірність, як я згадував раніше, — японська М.

The nib: is fully rigid(manifold), is not removable, a single whole with the grip, except for the iridium(?) tip. The nib has a smooth glide when write. The reverse side has a plaque like a Montblanc. Tip size is japanese M.

Модель була введена в експлуатацію в 1971 році, хоча сама концепція кишенькових ручок (pocket pen) з’явилася в 1964 році, а компанія Pilot впровадила її в 1968 році. Модель отримала назву MYU, і примітно те, що її виробляли лише для японського ринку. Ця модель мала кодове позначення M-350SS (М — MYU, SS — Stainless Steel) з вартістю 3500 йєн (JPY), для порівняння — Capless у той час коштував 4000 йєн. У 1973 році до базової моделі додали дві додаткові: M-500BS (Black Steel) у чорну поздовжню смужку (stripe) і M-500WS у “непомітну” (або сталеву) смужку (Elusive White Striped) — ця модель надзвичайно рідкісна й практично недосяжна для покупки. Моделі були настільки інноваційними, успішними та популярними, що навіть отримали прізвисько “невбиваний інструмент мандрівника” (ultimate travel pen), оскільки вони були компактними, їх можна було носити в сумці з ключами, на них можна було сісти (носити в задній кишені штанів), і при цьому з ними нічого не траплялося — вони продовжували працювати, та ще й як! Такий собі “енерджайзер” у світі ручок :). Популярність тривала, і в 1977 році з’явилася повнорозмірна модель MYU-REX (в англомовному світі відома як Myrex) — MR-500SS (MR — MYU-REX) з вартістю 5000 єн. А через рік була випущена модель Red Trim Long Murex з оздобленням червоним лаком на кліпі та кільці між корпусом і грипом, за типом Rotring 🙂 з такою ж вартістю в 5000 єн. Найбільш незвичайна модель була запущена у 1981 році та мала кодову назву FDW800S. Вона була примітна тим, що мала вбудований у ковпачок (біля кліпу) кварцовий годинник (мабуть, ті, хто народилися в СРСР, пам’ятають час, коли японські ручки з годинниками були дуже стильними, щоправда, я бачив тільки кулькові ручки :)). Така модель коштувала 8000 єн. Але, на жаль, з невідомих причин того ж року виробництво цієї знакової серії ручок було припинено. Проте у 2008 році компанія Pilot зробила повернення і випустила лімітовану модель М90, яка незначно відрізнялася від оригіналу MYU-701, але була виконана з тією ж ідеєю, і не дивно, що її розкупили дуже швидко, “як гарячі пиріжки”. Зараз вона є не меншою рідкістю. Містер Хіросава сказав, що компанія Pilot не планує відновлювати виробництво цього типу ручок, а випуск у 2008 році 9000 екземплярів був разовою акцією в рамках святкування 90-річчя компанії:).

Багато колекціонерів і шанувальників пір’яних інструментів порівнюють цю серію (MYU) з випущеною всього на рік раніше, у 1970 році, моделлю Parker T-1 (виконаною з титану), яка мала дуже схожу конструкцію з інтегрованим у корпус пером. Але не будемо уподібнюватися критикам і порівнювачам, а радітимемо тому, що нам пощастило побачити цей, не побоюся цього слова, унікальний і неординарний інструмент, який на рівні з Parker Duofold, Whal-Eversharp Doric, Parker 51, Eversharp Skyline, Pilot Capless прикрашає історію розвитку пір’яних ручок як у технічному виконанні інженерної думки, так і в неординарному підході до дизайну.

Minutes of history:
The model was introduced in 1971, although the concept of pocket pens appeared in 1964, and Pilot introduced it in 1968. The model was named MYU and it is remarkable that it was produced only for the Japanese market. This model was codenamed M-350SS (M – MYU, SS – Stainless Steel) with a cost of 3500 yen (JPY), for comparison – capless cost 4000 yen at that time. In 1973, two additional models appeared to this line M-500BS (Black Steel) with a black longitudinal stripe (stripe) and M-500WS with an “invisible” (or steel) strip (Elusive White Striped) – this model is extremely rare and almost unrealistic to find for buy. The models were so innovative, successful and popular that they even earned the nickname “ultimate travel pen” because they were compact, could be carried in a bag with keys, they could eventually sit (carry in the back pocket of trousers) and at the same time nothing happened to them and they continued to work and work – such a “energizer” in the world of pens :). So the popularity continued and in 1977 there was already a full-size MYU-REX model (in the English-speaking world it was called Myrex) – MR-500SS (MR – MYU-REX) with a cost of 5000 yen. A year later, the Red Trim Long Murex model was released with red lacquer finish on the clip and on the ring between the body and the grip, like the Rotring 🙂 with the same price of 5000 yen. And the most unusual model was launched in 1981 and had the code name FDW800S, and it was remarkable for the fact that it had a quartz watch built into the cap (near the clip) (probably born in the USSR remember this time, when Japanese pens with built-in clocks were very stylish , though I saw only ballpoint ones :)). This model cost 8000 yen. But alas, for unknown reasons, the production of these iconic type of pens was discontinued in the same year. However, Pilot made a comeback in 2008 and released a limited edition model M90, which differed slightly from the original MYU-701, but was implemented with the same idea and no wonder that it was sold out very quickly, and now in fact, it is no less rare. Mr. Hirosawa, said that Pilot does not intend to resume production of this type of pen and that in 2008 there was a one-time promotion with the release of 9000 copies – a tribute to the history timed to coincide with the company’s 90th anniversary :).

Many collectors and pen aficionados compare this series (MYU) to the Parker T-1 (made of titanium) released just a year earlier in 1970, which had a very similar design with the nib integrated into the body. But we will not be like critics and comparisons, but we will be glad that we were lucky enough to see this, I am not afraid of this word, a unique and extraordinary instrument that, together with Parker Duofold, Whal-Eversharp Doric, Parker 51, Eversharp Skyline, Pilot Capless – adorn the history of the development of fountain pens both in the technical performance of engineering thought and in an extraordinary approach to design.

Дозволю собі нагадати (тим, хто не в курсі), що формат pocket pen базується на малому розмірі інструмента в складеному стані, який може поміститися навіть у невелику кишеню. Але завдяки особливій конструкції, а саме довгому ковпачку, який можна надіти на тильну сторону ручки, вона перетворюється на повнорозмірний (full-size) інструмент для письма :).

Let me remind (for those who do not know) that the pocket pen format is based on a small body(also when folded) with long cap, which when posted transform pen to full-size tool:).

Загальні розміри інструмента: довжина в складеному стані — 119 мм, без ковпачка — 105 мм, а з надягнутим ковпачком на тильну частину — 142 мм. Діаметр корпусу — 11 мм, діаметр ковпачка (при надітому на торець варіанті) — 11.5 мм, діаметр в зоні хвату — 9 мм. Повна вага інструмента — 21 г, а без ковпачка — 14 г.

The overall dimensions of the instrument: length in the folded – 119mm, without cap – 105mm, and when posted – 142mm. The barrel diameter is 11 mm, diameter of the cap (when osted) is 11.5 mm, diameter at the grip is 9 mm. The total weight is 21g, and without cap is 14g.

Ось уж дійсно можна сказати, що Pilot зробив інструмент для Пілотів:).

До мене інструмент потрапив на обслуговування, точніше на відновлення, оскільки виробник, створюючи такий “невбивний” інструмент, ніяк не міг передбачити, що якщо його не повинни чавити, то й не заправлятимуть тущю 🙁 . Судячи з глянцевої плівки та нерозчинності у воді, ручка була заправлена або тущу або перманентним чорнилом, і залишена сохнути в темряві та байдужості 🙁 . Але…

… але після відновлення та повного обслуговування ручка отримала друге життя і одразу була протестована в роботі :).

This tool came to me for service, or rather for restoration, since the Pilot, creating such an “unkillable” tool, could not assume that if it was not crushed, then it would not be filled by india ink :(. Judging by the glossy shine and insolubility in water, the pen was filled by india or pigmented ink, and left to dry in the dark and indifference :(. But …

Restored after fully cleaned, serviced and tested.

Як вже писав вище, перо абсолютно жорстке, прямою стороною дає стабільну моноширову лінію шириною 0.4мм, що цілком відповідає японському стандарту М. Зворотна сторона відчутно шкрфбе і дає більш скромну лінію шириною 0.3мм, але при штриховці лінія виходить близько 0.15мм, хоча може і порізати папір, якщо втратити контроль :).

As I wrote above, the nib is absolutely hard, the right side gives a stable monowidth line with a width of 0.4 mm, which fully corresponds to the Japanese standard M. The reverse side is noticeably scratched and gives a more modest line with a width of 0.3 mm, but on crosshatching, the line turns to be about 0.15 mm, although it can cut the paper if lost control :).

В результаті: в повній мірі культовий або навіть іконічний інструмент “всіх часів і народів” однозначно необхідний (рекомендований до пошуку) для колекціонерів і шанувальників перових інструментів. Матеріал і виконання корпусу роблять його практично нечутливим до пошкоджень(звісно як що не намагатись зробити саме це), і навіть по закінченню 40-50 років виглядає майже як новий. Однак, як би це сказати, безперешкодний гладкий грип звуженої форми і певна тонкість корпусу накладають свої обмеження. Ймовірно, великі руки, і особливо з довгими пальцями, можуть відчувати дискомфорт — про це потрібно пам’ятати, щоб відчуття виправдали очікування:). Ось якось так 🙂

At the end: a really cult or iconic tool of “all times of fountain pens” is fully recommended for collectors and fans of fountain pens. The material and design of the case makes it practically unkillable, and even after 40–50 years it looks almost like new(brushed stainless still). But the tool is little thin and may be uncomfortable for big hand with long fingers(I think). Something like that:).

Update 1:

Сьогодні в якості першого апдейту хочу показати фідер після кількох циклів в ультразвуковій ванні і витягування з корпусу, чого ніяк не можна робити з хорошими чорнильними ручками (!!!).

In first addon that was the feed before cleaning and service. This can make filled by india ink, but that you can not do categorically!!!

Update 05.03.2019:

Додатково дополірував перо, і тепер воно пише дивовижно гладко обома сторонами. Товщина лінії прямою стороною не змінилася — 0.4мм, зворотньою стала — 0.35мм, а в штриховці (зворотною стороною) — 0.2мм.

After additional tip polishing, the pen is writing very very smoothly by both side. Right side is have some line is 0.4mm, and by reverse side have line is 0.35mm, but in crosshatch by reverse side is 0.2mm.

ps: хвилин 5 пролежала без ковпачка та на відміну від зауважень в інтернеті не засохла, стартувала одразу.

Після розмов з деякими прихильниками перових ручок та згадуванні Myu, я засумував за своїми смугастими, та не витримавши придбав собі молодшого 701, хоча до нього треба було докласти трошки зусиль.

Опис повністю відповідає тексту на початку посту, тому я не буду повторюватись. Єдине що треба зауважити що вийняти фідер з цього корпусу мені не вдалось, сидить дуже щільно, а міцно схопитись нема за що.

The description fully corresponds to the text at the beginning of this post, so I will not repeat. The only thing what I want noted is that I could not pull out feed from this body, it is held very tightly, and there is nothing to grip firmly.

В корпуса з нержавіючої сталі вклеєні пластикові втулки з різбленням. В ковпачку знаходиться лише латунна пружина для щільного утримання корпуса ручки.

Plastic bushings with thread are glued into the stainless steel body. There is only a brass spring in the cap to keep the pen body tight.

Ковпачок має тиснення бренду в нижній частині – Pilot, а корпус має маркування розміру кінчика F та дати виробництва ручки H574 (травень 1974, зроблено на фабриці Hiratsuka).

The cap is stamped by brandname Pilot on the bottom, and body is marked by tip size F and date of manufacture H574 (May 1974, make at the Hiratsuka factory).

Одразу вирішив протестувати ручку новим та невідомим мені чорнилом, тому поки вагаюсь визначити чи має перо традиційно вологу подачу, чи нормальну.

I immediately decided to test this pen by new and unknown for me ink, so I am still can’t determine whether this nib has traditionally for Pilot wet ink flow or normal one.

Ширина звичайної лінії прямою стороною складає – 0.3 мм, при цьому натиск дозволяє трохи збільшити подачу і лінія стає 0.5 мм. Зворотна сторона дає лінію 0.2 мм.

The width of the ordinary line by the right side is – 0.3 mm, while the pressure allows to slightly increase the flow and the line becomes 0.5 mm. The reverse side gives the line – 0.2 mm.

В решті: За 2.5 роки я так відвик і вже забув наскільки це маленька та тоненька ручка, хоча Stryped Myu мені здавався більш міцним із більш товстими стінками металу. Само перо доволі ординарне, без родзинки при письмі та дає шладку, моноширну, стабільно-однакову лінію, але кому потрібен компактний інструмент формату Pocket Pen це залишаєтся культовий та класний тул, який легко розмістится як у кишені, так і у петличці записника, при цьому розтошування ковпачка на торці робить ручку повного розміру. Але все одно це класна та культова ручка, тому раджу кому не шкода коштів)).

At the end: After 2.5 years, I forgot from this pen format and already forgot how small and thin this pen is, although the Striped Myu seemed to me to be more durable, solid build with thicker metal side. So, this nib itself is quite ordinary, without personality when writing and gives a smooth, mono-wide, stable line, but for those who need a compact Pocket Pen format tool, this beauty, iconic and unusual tool that easily fits both in a pocket and in a loop on notebook, while when cap is posted makes this pen as full size. Because it’s still a cool and iconic pen, I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind spending extra money)).

Update 7:

Перо, скоріш за все, постраждала при легкому падінні, але попередній власник казав що незважаючи на викривлення кінчика, ручка всеодно писала, правда трохи сухувато.

This nib, most likely, was bent after light fall, but the previous owner said that despite the bent nib, the pen still wrote ok, but a little dry.

Я, звісно, не став навіть пробувати як пише ручка, а одразу виправив перо, а вже після цього протестував.

Of course, I didn’t try how this nib writes, and immediately fixed nib, and only after that did the test.

Коротке резюме: в тонкому пері чорнила виглядають дуже гарно і зовсім не схожи на демо-тест з офіційної сторінки, я бі сказав що це гарний Edelstein Topaz з елементом Organic Studio Nitrogen. Мокра лінія дає еффект глибокого синього яки може відблискувати в косому освітленні, а тонкий чи бистрий штрих робить цю ліній блакитною. Але у бочці з медом є трохи і дьогтю, мені здалось що в тонкому пері це чорнило трохи підсихає, тобто як що ти замислився над реченням чи над ескізом, то краще закрити ковпачок, бо перший штрих, після 1-2 хвилин роздумів може початись із пропуска. А колір файний))

ps 09.11.2024: але як і більшисть чорнил насичених фарбником який дає шін, вони дуже важко промиваются бе повної розбірки, навіть в картриджно-конвертерной системі. Цю ручку довелось відмочувати у воді всю ніч і я не впевнений що чорнило повністю вимилось.

A short summary: in a thin nib, the ink looks very nice and not at all like on the demo-swabs from the official page, I would say that it is a nice Pelikan Edelstein Topaz with an element of Organic Studio Nitrogen. A wet line gives the effect of deep blue, which can reflect red in side lighting, and light cyan by thin fast strokes. But in the barrel of honey, there is a bit of tar, I mean, it seemed to me that this ink dries up a little on the thin tip. So, if you have thought about a sentence or sketch, it is better to close nib by the cap, because the first stroke, after 1-2-3 minutes of thinking, can begin with empty line. But the color is super nice))

ps 09.11.2024: but like most oversaturated inks with this sheen, they are very difficult to clean without full disassembly, even with C/C system. This pen had to be soaked in water all night and I am not sure that the ink has completely cleaned.

До речі, на офіційному сайті це чорнило повністю розпродано, але є інше чорнило з таким самим тестовим семплом яке має назву Birmingham Ultramarine.

By the way, this ink is sold out on the official website, but there is another ink with the same swabs-test sample, which is named Birmingham Ultramarine.

Це майже однакові фото зроблені з різницею в секунду лише з нахилом в 5-15 градусів між собою, щоб спіймати відблиск.

These are almost identical photos taken at the same moment just with an inclination of 5-15 degrees between them.

Мені це чорнило презентували як аналог Organic Studio Nitrogen, тільки з тією різницею що воно не мажеться рукою, але як виявилось все ж таки мажеться хоча і не так сильно як Nitrogen, бо останнім взагалі неможливо користуватись в повсякденні. Цікаво, а легендарний Parker Sapphire теж мажеться сухою рукою?

This ink was presented to me as an analogue of Organic Studio Nitrogen, only with the difference that it is not smeared by hand, but as it turned out, it still smears, although not as much as Nitrogen, because the Nitrogen is generally impossible to use as EDC ink. I wonder if the legendary Parker Sapphire is also smeared by dry hand?

Ще одне цікаве чорнило для тесту гарною ручкою – найкращій спосіб гарно провести час при блекаутах)).

Diamine Inkvent Winter Spice — це чорнило із блискатками та відблиском із Diamine Inkvent Red серії, із 25 кольорів червоного календаря 2021 року. Оскільки я не люблю блискавки, то я обачно не став збовтувати чорнила перед заправкою, тож протестував лише колір та відблиск. За кольором чорнило приємного коричнево-шоколадного кольору, але має яскравий зелений відблиск. За властивостями це гарне, не сухе і не занадто вологе чорнило із середніми змащувальними здібностями. Тож кому подобається коричневий колір із незвичайним відблиском можу зарадити. ручку ще не промивав то ще не можу сказати як легко пігмент вимивається із фідера, зазвичай всі супер-насичені чорнила доволі погано вимиваються із секцій без повного розбирання.

Diamine Inkvent Winter Spice is a shimmer & sheen fountain pen ink from the Diamine Inkvent Red Edition, the 25 colors of red calendar of 2021. Because I don’t like shimmer in ink, I was careful not to shake the bottle before filling, so I only tested color and sheen. In terms of color, the ink is a pleasant brown-chocolate color, but has a bright green sheen. In terms of other properties, this is a good, not dry and not too wet ink with medium lubricating abilities. So, I can recommend this ink to those who likes a brown color with an unusual sheen. I haven’t cleaned my pen yet, so I can’t say how easily the dye washes out of the feed, usually all super-saturated inks with sheen cleaned is very hard without full section disassembly.

I continue the theme of ink and rainy mood)).

Нове чорнило сьогодні – Birmingham Tesla Coil. Як і більшість чорнил із значним шином (відблиском) вони доволі швидко сохнуть на тонкому пері, що відмічається і іншими користувачами. При чому я помітив, що ручка із закритим ковпачком не сохне, тобто коли знімаєш ковпачок то перші штрихи вологі, а чим більше пишеш/малюєш, тим більше чорнило підсихає на відкритому кінчику, та одразу зазначу, що у моїх ручок нема проблем із подачею. За властивостями та поведінкою чорнило дуже схоже на Rohrer & Klingner SketchInk, при малюванні треба мати пляшку із водою поруч, куди періодично занурювати перо.

New ink today – Birmingham Tesla Coil. Like most inks with a significant sheen, they dry quite quickly on a thin тши, which is also noted by other users in community. Moreover, I want to notice, that a nib when in closed cap does not dry, so, when open cap, the first strokes are wet, but when more write/draw, the ink dries more on the open tip. I will immediately note that my pens have no problems with feed and flowing ink. In terms of properties this ink is very similar to Rohrer & Klingner SketchInk, so, when drawing I need to have a cup of water nearby, where I can periodically dip dry nib.

Був незадоволений попереднім налаштуванням пера із за того що не вийшло вийняти фідер що не дозволило більш точно налаштувати перо. Цього разу фідер дістав, тому перо налаштував саме так як воно і повинно було бути налаштовано.

I was unhappy with the previous nib adjusting because I couldn’t remove the feed from section firstly, which didn’t allow me to adjust this nib more precisely. This time I was more lucky and removed the feed, so I adjusted nib exactly as it should have been adjusted.

Як і більшість чорнил із шинінгом які мають перенасиченість фарбником, вони, на жаль, мажуться, хоча і не так сильно як Organic Studio Nitrogen, але не менше ніж Birmingham. В плюсах цього чорнила в порівнянні із Birmingham вони не так швидко сохнуть на відкритому пері і не надто сухі.

Like most shinning inks that are oversaturated by dye, they unfortunately smear, although not as much as Organic Studio Nitrogen, but no less than Birmingham. The pros of this ink compared to Birmingham are that it does not so quickly dry on open nib and is not too dry overall.
