Hello everybody! About 2 years ago I already reviewed this early version, and today I want to show the current, actual version.

Привіт всім! Близько 2 років потому я вже робив огляд цієї моделі у ранньому варіанті, а сьогодні хочу показати актуальну, останню версію.

Caran d’Ache Varius Ivanhoe (Swiss made) model: 4490.014

Форма корпуса інструменту циліндрична з шестигранним ковпачком, виготовлена з латуні та покрита місцями сріблом, місцями родієм. Щодо того, які частини чим покриті, виробник не уточнює:). Окінчання ручки з обох боків мають звужену та плавно закруглену циліндричну форму. Система заправки – картриджно-конвертерна формату інтернешенел (international). Ковпачок на різьблені, відкриття/закриття за 1 і 3/4 оберту.

The shape of this pen is cylindrical body with hexagonal cap made of brass and silver or rhodium plated. What parts are by rhodium or silver the manufacturer does not specify :). The ends of the pen on both sides have a narrowed and smoothly rounded flat cylindrical shape. The filling system is a cartridge converter of the international format. Cap on thread, closing/opening in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Навершя ковпачка прикрашено сучасним логотипом компанії у вигляді перерізу класичного дерев’яного олівця та грифеля в ньому. Я не впевнений у матеріалі, але схоже на чорний лак під прозорим акриловим покриттям.

The top of the cap is decorated with a actual company logo in the form of a cross-section of a classic wooden pencil and lead in it. I’m not sure about the material, but it looks like black laquere under transparensy acrylic finish.

На кільці навершя ковпачка нанесено Caran d’Ache Swiss made. Видно, що в відмінності від попередньої версії, змінилися як логотип, так і форма навершя, і форма кріплення кліпа, яка тепер більш відповідає дизайну всієї ручки. У кінці секції розташувалась аналогічна надпис – Caran d’Ache Swiss made. До речі, як видно на фото, ущільнююче кільце змінило свій колір з чорного на сірий і стало менш помітним.

Caran d’Ache Swiss made on the cap top ring. It can be seen that, in contrast to the early version, the logo, the shape of the top, and the shape of the clip fastening have changed, which has become more consistent with the design of the entire handle. At the end of the section there is a similar inscription – Caran d’Ache Swiss made. By the way, as you can see in the photo, the O-ring changed color from black to gray and became less noticeable.

Минулого разу мені не вдалося зняти фідер, але цього разу це було просто необхідно, тому я навіть зняв пластиковий стакан. Цікаво, що стакан викручується з секції за допомогою ключа через посадкове місце для конвертера/картриджа. Ще один цікавий момент, незважаючи на те, що секція правильно циліндрична, стакан має шліц з одного боку, який не виконує жодної функції. Мабуть, це якась універсальна розробка від Bock для фіксації положення пера відносно корпусу, яка в даному випадку просто не була потрібна.

Last time I was unable to remove the feed, but this was not required by the situation, but in this case it was simply necessary, so I even full section disasseble. It is interesting that collar is unscrewed from the section using a key through the seat for converter/cartridge. Another interesting point is that despite the fact that the section is correctly cylindrical, the collar has a slot on one side, which does not perform any function. This is probably some kind of universal Bock solution for fixing the position of the nib relative to the section/body, which in this case turned out to be simply unclaimed.

Перо: золоте, з 18-каратного золота, покрите родієм, за формою повністю ідентичне попередньому варіанту, але має абсолютно інший малюнок. Перо звичайне, з невеликою пружністю, але при письмі відчувається цвяхом. На перо нанесено линійний малюнок, сучасний логотип компанії у вигляді перерізу олівця, розмір пера M і чистота золота – 18C-750. На лівому боці між M і 18C-750 розташовано ювелірне тавро: в овалі першим рядком Ste, другим E і нахиленим на 10 годину пером.

The nib: solid gold, 18k, full rhodium-plated, completely identical in shape to the earlier version, but with a completely different design. The nib is ordinary, with slight springy, but when writing it feels like a nail. The nib has a line drawing pattern, the company’s actual logo in the form of a pencil section, the nib is dimension M and the sample of gold is 18C-750. On left side, between M and 18C-750, there is a jewelry mark: in the oval with the first line Ste and second with E and nib tilted at 10 o’clock.

Загальні розміри інструмента: довжина у складеному вигляді – 137 мм, зі знятим ковпачком – 128.7 мм, при надітому на торецьі ковпачку довжина збільшується до 172 мм. Діаметр корпусу – 11 мм, а в місці хвату – 7.9 мм. Повна вага (без картриджа\конвертера) – 39.7 г, а при знятому ковпачку – 22.8 г.

The overall dimensions of the tool: folded length – 137mm, without cap – 128.7mm, when posted – 172mm. The body diameter is 11mm, and at the grip – 7.9mm. Full weight (without cartridge / converter) – 39.7 g, and without cap – 22.8 g.

Арнольд Швейцер (Arnold Schweitzer) заснував компанію Caran d’Ache у 1915 році і назвав її на честь відомого французького карикатуриста епохи “Бель Епок”, Еммануеля Пуаре, чиєї творчості він віддавав шану. Arnold Schweitzer founded Caran d’Ache in 1915, named after the famous French Belle Epoque cartoonist, Emmanuel Poiret, whose work he worshiped. Poiret signed his works with the pseudonym Caran d’Ache, which became the name and logo of the trademark. Emmanuel Poiret himself, the grandson of an officer of the Napoleonic army, was born in Moscow from where this pseudonym actually appeared because of his knowledge of the Russian language. In his first works, he glorified the era of Napoleon, later, becoming an employee of the newspaper “Lundi du Figaro” in Paris, Poiret finds himself in the genre of caricature, creating the so-called “stories without words.” He is sometimes referred to as one of the pioneers of the comic book genre. In turn, the word “pencil” itself comes from Turkey, from the word “Kara Tash”, which means black stone – that is, graphite. So the deposits of graphite in the Swiss mountains and the entrepreneurial spirit of Arnold Schweitzer gave impetus to the organization of a manufacture in Geneva in 1915, and the Caran d’Ache brand appeared 9 years later (1924).

1929 was the first milestone in the history of the creation of Caran d’Ache writing tools – the company’s engineer Carl Schmidt developed a mechanical pencil – the Fixpencil, and in the 30s the first Ecridor pencil (yes, yes, that one) made of gold or silver appeared decorated with an engraved pattern. In 1931, the company launched watercolor pencils, and in 1952, wax pencils. It was only in 1953 that the company released the first Caran d’Ache Ecridor ballpoint pen, which is still being produced. But really quite “only”, in 1970, the Madison collection was presented, which first time included a fountain pen. Since 1994, Caran d’Ache has launched limited edition pens for connoisseurs of luxury. The first limited edition is the Geneva collection – 2000 fountain pens and 2000 ballpoint pens covered with 23K rose gold. In 2008, the Caran d’Ache 1010 pen, dedicated to the art of Swiss watchmakers, became the “Pen of the Year” according to the experts of the Pen World magazine.

Основна проблема даного інструменту полягала в тому, що після написання пари сторінок повністю відмовляв фідер у подачі. На жаль, це вже третій або четвертий випадок такої поведінки, і це пов’язано з проблемним фідером. Я не знаю, яких компонентів не додали (або переклали) в пластик, але ці фідери мають проблему з змочуванням, при цьому механічно в них немає жодних дефектів. Вирішити дану проблему можна лише заміною фідера на “справний”. Додатково була виправлена зворотна сторона пера, яка не писала і подряпувала, а також прибрано невеликий заводський дефект, оскільки ручка була куплена недавно новою.

The main problem with this pen was that after writing a couple of pages, the ink supply completely stopped. Unfortunately, in my practice, this is already the third or fourth case of such behavior and it is connected with a problem feed. I don’t know what components were not added (or overadded) into plastic, but these feeds have a wettability problem, but mechanically they have no flaws. This problem can be solved only by replacing the feed on “right” one. In addition was also corrected the reverse side of this nib which scratchy and did not write, and small factory baby-bottom was removed also, because the pen was recently purchased new.

Ширина лінії прямою стороною складає 0.5 мм, натиск трохи збільшує подачу та збільшує лінію до 0.8 мм. Зворотна сторона дає лінію – 0.35 мм. Обидві сторони пишуть зараз гладко.

The line width by the right side is 0.5mm, but pressure slightly increases the flow and line to 0.8mm. The reverse side has a line – 0.35mm. Both sides write smoothly now.

В підсумку: мої враження з минулого разу не змінилися – з точки зору ергономіки мені дуже незручний такий тонкий грип, і зручно писати цією ручкою я можу тільки, використовуючи високий хват за корпус а не секцію. З точки зору дизайну – текстура Ivanhoe просто неперевершена. В іншому це звичайне перо з достатньо високою ціною, тому воно більше підходить на роль статусного аксесуару.

At the end: my previously impressions have not changed – from the point of view of ergonomics, I am very uncomfortable with such a thin grip and I can write comfortably with this pen only using a high grip (on the body not the section). What about design, Ivanhoe’s texture is simply gorgeous. Otherwise, this is an ordinary nib with a fairly high price, so it is more suitable for the role of a status accessory.
